When I think of Dubai, I can't help but see it as a ruined capital, abandoned of everything in 20 or 30 years' time. The level of emptiness, false values and injustice is as high as its very existence contradicts all the principles that preside over the creation of a city (proximity to water, architecture shaped by primary needs, etc.) A bombastic materialization of greed and all the excesses that go with it, which naturally cannot last forever.

That's the paradox in the whole situation. U can't even talk against the system from outside of it.. at the very least u need a smartphone and an internet connection, both produced by the system. Simultaneously, u still gotta eat and u still probably prefer earning your living by doing something u like opposed to something u don't. So all in all u still have to play the game at least to some extent.

I was in Dubai back in the early 90's, and it was a stark contrast to what it is today. No skyscrapers, high end shops, or lamborghinis running around, just a traditional middle eastern city in the desert. I imagine it will return to that some day.

I have a friend from South Africa who was invited as a model to Dubai but then she got drugged and used as a sex worker over there. Luckily she was freed with the help of one of the regular clients. Thank God she's now home back in South Africa but still has to go to therapy.
