  • Hey there. These were 3 ordinary Ficus Benjamina that I rescued and that have now taken the form of a delicate clump-style Bonsai.
This wholeprocess took about 15 months.

Thank you friend :) normally I try to be more strict when it comes to branch position and I thought it couldn’t hurt to try something else :)

Nice job David! You gave a new purpose to these neglected benjamina. I think I would have also trimmed back the long and skinny branches to help with taper and give it a more compact shape. Looking forward to see what you have planned for this one.

Yes, I actually struggled with myself whether I should or shouldn’t cut back. I didn’t in the end because I wanted to conserve the trees‘ strength before winter. This one has been a bit finicky last winter. Another reason was that the tree has just started to put out aerial roots and I want to encourage that more. And finally I am still not totally happy with the fusion of trunks, you can still see the individual trees very clearly. The next styling next year will definitely see the main trunks cut way back though :)

@@Bonsaifly One thing I also noticed with mine is that the trunks do not thicken up too fast. At least not under the growing conditions I an offer them. So it will probably take some time for those trunks to fuse properly. Promoting aerial roots in that area would also help in hiding the section where the trunks are supposed to fuse if that's what you're trying to achieve.

@@OddBonsai what growing conditions do you have for yours?
Mine looked poorly after winter but actually put out some nice new growth over summer. I think that if I let it grow under a grow light in winter I will be able to thicken it up just a bit more and exactly like you said use aerial roots to hide the fusion lines. I actually almost sold this one but now am glad I didn’t :)

@@Bonsaifly Nothing special. From spring until a few days ago it was growing outside in a location with SE exposure and now it's inside sitting on a window sill with SV exposure so that it can get more light and sun. Last year I kept it in my bathroom under a roof window. It does grow during the cold season but nothing fantastic. At least I'm happy it doesn't drop any leaves. :)

I’ll actually have mine in a self-built winter greenhouse (video on that soon). I hope it’s going to do well. I think I might be doing an update video on a couple of trees around December. We will see then :)
