My best friend was in a coma for two weeks and the whole back of her head was matted when she woke up. She asked a hairdresser to just shave it all off and be done with it, but the hairdresser asked if she could try detangling it first. That lady saved almost all her hair. Being able to do something like this for someone is such an important thing.

Yes, it means so much. Back in the mid 90s I was working as a CNA for a temp agency in St. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA and got assigned one night to Bayfront hospital on the overnight 11pm to 7 am shift. One of the patients was an Asian woman that spoke no English. The RNs told me she had been there for 3 months . She was beautiful, seemed unable to talk in any language and seemed very sad. She had very long hair that was matted . The RNs spent most of the night sitting at the desk ,3 of them, while I went around and took care of the patients. It was night shift, so most of the patients were sleeping so I had some extra time. I spent two hours trying to get the tangles out of this beautiful womans hair. She smiled a lot and winced when I pulled too hard, but she seemed to understand that I was trying to help her. She never said a word to me, but when I got the tangles out of her hair then put it in a simple braid, she gave me a hug and kissed my cheek. Never saw that woman again, as it was a one night job with a temp agency, but have always wondered what happened to her. But I do know that having her hair cared for when she was helpless to do it for herself meant something to her.

That happened to me too but I was all matted prior to my coma and was asking the nurses to shave my head none of them would, then when I woke up my hair was detangled 🥺
When I was 10, my Dad got custody of me from my mother, and I didn't know how to do my hair, so I just kept pulling it back without brushing it. You can imagine the matted mess it ended up being! A very kind hairdresser like you took the time to detangle it, and teach me how to brush and pull back my hair. I'll be 40 next month, but I will always remember that kindness! I'm going to spend some Google time trying to find that hairdresser and tell her how much I appreciate her saving my hair back then. Thank you for doing what you did for this young woman!

Yes, I can’t count the times that I was close to getting the scissors or even fell asleep with the comb in my hand. It looks gorgeous when I am finished and I always promise myself not to let it get this tangled ever again. But then life hits. I found a SUPER detangler now. It melts the tangles.

@@peace-n-happiness Share please! What do you use for detangling? I have really thick 3C/4A hair and mine gets tangled SO easily. I can detangle it, shake it once and then try to comb through it again and somehow it's already partially tangled again. It's like my ends lock together instantly. Such a pain...
@@herm712 i don’t know what chronic happiness uses but i recommend aloe vera juice straight from the leaf plant, u can buy it at the store or u can buy an aloe vera plant in a pot from home depot and search up how to care for it
I am white and severely disabled. At the beginning of the epidemic my partner and I invested in a proper shaver with different safe guards. I love my new shaved look, because before I struggled so hard with not getting matted hair.
I will never judge anyone on matted or tangled hair, it can happen faster than you could ever imagine.

Same, decided to get myself one of thkse electric things to do my own hair, funny how as a kid my mom had my hair down at my shoulders try but wet it went down to maybe slightly above mid back. Drying that thick mess was a chore. Now I have it at 3 mm and enjoy it quite well
I bought a clipper with guards but only to taper the back. But in a fit of frustration I ended up shaving off because I dyed and bleach it the same day. It was like a bird's nest. Went straight in with that number 3 did the job nicely.

Indeed it can. A couple of days , and tangles seem to happen at the back, when hair rubs collars, coats &c.

Thank you for speaking up for those of us that fight the matting. My little girls hair takes me 8-12 hours to detangle so it’s so hard when people are telling me I neglect her hair. It hurts knowing I hold my arms up that long going strand by strand, sometimes overnight while she sleeps, to take care of it. I always want to say I’d hardly call that neglect by I just smile and say thank you

As someone who is disabled and has depression, I can totally understand how someone can get to that point. Sometimes life just happens to you.

@@Yoyocreative depression may be temporary but im starting to see that some hair problems are not. During a particularly high stressful and depressing time I started losing hair that may likely never grow back. This may sound dramatic but its heartbreaking watching your hair fall and fall in clumps and not being able to stop it.

It's so true. Not all Black people can do hair. My sister CANNOT DO HAIR! My niece went to the shop every few weeks. Now my niece learned how to do hair because of my sister not knowing how.
Right it’s not easy to pick up right away it takes practice to learn how to manage
I have long blonde/grey hair, it was poker straight for years. Then it developed a wave about 10 years ago. It doesn’t get massive knots, but in summer it can get mats. So i plait it, some mornings my body & fingers hurt & I just can’t do it. Do I do it later. Once it’s plaited it gets frizzy, so I have to re plait it. It makes me sooo grateful for the kind of hair I have!
Afro hair seems to take so much work! I’m not a hair kind of person either. Unless I’m going somewhere I can’t be bothered faffing with straiteners and fancy drying with a brush …🤦🏼♀️ I don’t have enough coordination to do that. I hang my head down and blow it. I don’t bother using a hairdryer if I can.

I used to teach and I remember a mum coming to me in tears. They didn’t go to bed until midnight trying to get rid of head lice in C’s hair and hardly got anywhere. So after school I went to help her, we finally managed it. C’s hair was half Afro but such hard work. I was common to have to do kid’s hair because their parents wouldn’t do it. C’s mum cared but was overwhelmed. C is now a mummy to a little boy 😀

I had a 10 yr old girl with natural matted hair like that. She went on holiday and didn't brush it. She got sunscreen into it and the chlorine in the pool and salt from the sea made it even worse. She was so sweet and cried as she was worried she would have to shave it off. It took me ages to get it out but we did in the end.
Thank you for saying, just cause you are a POC doesn't mean you know how to do hair! I wanted to be lil miss independent around her age so my mom allowed me to do my own hair... Months later, I had matted hair and spent a day at my Aunties house for her to detangle and teach me a thing or two about my hair type and care!
I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that all POC can do hair. Most of the time the idea is that they can do the bare minimum to not have their hair fall out and to look presentable. It's something that's learned through trial and error or from family members. I had absolutely no interest in my hair growing up, but I later learned the bare minimum to take care of it. It's like how everyone is expected to know how to brush their teeth. You could technically go to the dentist often for cleanings, but it's something that you should know how to do for yourself

I'm mixed and my mom is white. She asked my aunties to teach her how to do my and my sister's hair. I don't think i really learned how to care for and keep my hair healthy until i was maybe 20 and in college when my korean friend took me to his parent's beauty store with one of my friends who is mixed similar to me and they helped me get what i needed and talked me through how to care for natural hair. I'm super grateful someone taught me and want judgemental. I was always ashamed because i thought i needed to just know because I'm a poc.

.. coloring it ourselves, covering the grays ourselves, trimming and cutting it ourselves, relaxing it ourselves, styling it ourselves for a year... and now we bring it to them after a year of quarantine and it’s a huge mess.

That dear girl's self esteem could have been damaged, and all the girls like her. I am caucasian with hair I do myself. I've cut it five times since lockdown. But if I had to help a young lady with her hair, I do not have confidence I would make it better. Even similar to my hair type. I hope no fools make mean comments, I can do ALOT of things and these babes too. But hair and braces, and other professional done things and the parents now have to do. They r the unsung heroes. We aren't including that they have to work and the whole world has been flipped around. Y'all don't know what people r going through👋

My son is half black, he is now 5 years. It has literally taken me 5 years of research, trial and error to finally feel like I can take care of his hair. I love it, I hope when he grows up he remembers our nights together caring for his hair.

Me too. And I'm 42 and never watch ads!. But the way you work is definitely a ministry. My first time watching and I know im gonna enjoy more. Im black. And I know little about my own hair. I go to hair stores for product and am overwhelmed. I watched videos and talk to other woman. But it still hard managing my hair which is short to shoulder length. Maintaining natural healthy hair can be intimidating.

My first thought, after she went to her hairdresser that thought the only solution was to cut it, was she should have looked for a person who unravels locs or someone like this lady! I've seen people on CZcams take apart their own locs, it too one girl five weeks but she did it! Now she has bra strap length natural hair!

I'm black and I can not do hair. My mom did my hair up until I was 31. Thank goodness I can pay someone to do it. It stays tangled and madded no matter what I do. Shout out to all the hair dressers, yall have more patience then me.

Awesome job! I was 13 when my mom passed away and my grandmother knew NOTHING about doing hair. My Godmother gave me her daughters’ doll and told me to do her hair twice a day. I became an awesome Braider and my younger sister and I never had to go to school without our hair being done again. I wish I had someone around like you then, because I might have stuck to doing hair as a profession.
Tears welled up in my eyes just watching the whole process. The way this little girl shook her hair you can tell how happy she was with what you did for her. We are all here to help each other. And if you can’t help someone make sure you don’t hurt them either. Thank you for what you do. My hair is thick but mats very easily too. I can’t keep braids on for over 2 weeks without the roots matting. I understand the struggle.

Well, I was sitting here watching this nice video and scrolling thru all the comments and as I was reading yours one part really got me and well (lol well/welled) you had tears welling up in my eyes. I love how you said if you can't do anything to help someone just make sure you don't hurt them further either.... 💔❤️ I'm not certain if it's just me or people that have been in my life or what; but I honestly do hope it's only me seeing this because the magnitude of hurt I've experienced on top of more hurt has been plentiful all the while I find myself actually waiting patiently far too often to see simple kindness in any day. I don't have the words to describe the destruction that can be done to a person that's already been hurt before and people continue to only add more hurt and they couldn't even help. So if anything I just wish and pray that your words as to never causing more pain or hurt could always be true. Please show love in this world wherever you go and be good to people. We do not ever really know what other's are going though is still true. I will be finally free of my knots and matted hair with one more attempt at it. It's been over about 2 weeks or so I've been trying to fix my hair and it's been pretty wearing and consuming and I can't wait until it's done so I can move on to other things. These hair videos started popping up in my recs and I am here for it! I am white so I don't have hair like this little girls but I do know what it's like to have matted, tangled hair. I am a future foster parent so I am doing research - I want to be prepared to help children in my care anyway I can! And that means knowing how to care for hair or at least knowing who to take them too. Love that you have this service!

I'm white, my husband is black and we adopted two girls, one white, one black, both relatives who fell into my lap...I loved doing my daughter's hair. At church, some of the mothers, when greeting me with a kiss would say thank you for taking such good care of her hair! I thought that was sweet.
As a teenager, she began doing her own hair. I'd kept it long and she cut it short. That night she climbed in my bed, crying...mommy what was I thinking. Lol, she's a mommy now.😏

I'm really glad you didnt get mad at the mom. A lot of parents don't know how to do hair and i can only imagine with black hair. I hope both the mom and girl are able to learn to take care of themselves so that hopefully they can hop on the problem before it gets bad
The information is all out there. My great niece is of mixed race and has the most stunning dark golden curly hair. Her English rose mother made it her business to learn how to look after her daughters hair and does a fantastic job.

How to care for curly hair in general isn't always taught in cosmology school, and it's such a shame!

My hair has been in twists for about a month under my wigs. I shampoo and condition the scalp weekly but today I went to really clean and detangle all of I t and it was dreaded all the way down the shafts! It took me a good 2 hours to detangle each one and I am now deep conditioning my whole head along with my daughters hair. Her hair gets matted super fast as well. All I could think about was you and your detangling videos. I wish there was someone was in my area that would handle this treatment with such care.
* I agree with you about not knowing everyone’s situation. I’ve had natural hair for over a decade and I know how to be gentle and take care of thick kinky hair. My daughters is 5 and her hair density and texture has completely changed over the years. She Used to love getting her hair done and I kept it simple but NOW it is pure hell and she is super tender headed. She also has a sensory disorder and wants no one to come near her hair or touch her scalp. She will fight, kick , scratch, and yell to the point Ive become temporarily deaf in my ears. It’s been a real struggle. I can do as much as bun it or put two sloppily parted ponytails or twists before school but hat usually stays in for a week or so before I have the strength to go through the process all over again. So, yes her hair gets matted quickly. I wish ppl would understand what I have to go through. It’s not as simple as taking her to a professional (tried that), waste of 3 hours and even though they offered the service at no charge her hair looked horrible after all was said and done. I’m so close to just giving her a teenie weenie Afro and start over but part of me wants to preserve all her growth. She has medium long hair.

Search up Mary K bella and if you can cornrow or plait you can keep it under there, also putting your hair in twists then in a bun/ponytail/puffs decreases the likelihood of tangling
I hope you and your daughter are doing so well, I'm thinking of you both. I think there's never anything wrong with going short if the person will be happy that way. It's all about how to love yourself best - for one person that could mean preserving length, for another it's keeping it short so they're more comfortable.

She has gorgeous hair 🥰. I had matted hair after keeping in braids for too long. I made the mistake of washing it and it was a wrap. I was also transitioning to natural at the time so the two textures matted, I can't tell you the mess. I simply cut it off.

Exactly my story too! I was transitionioning for a good little while, not sure how long. One day I went to wash it as I was getting ready to leave and go on a beach trip for the weekend. It tangled all the way up, I knew I was too "tender-headed" to even attempt to detangle it and did not have the time to do so anyways. I said f it and got my dad to drop me off at hair cuttery for an emergency hair cut. I had less than an inch of hair left and headed to the beach straight from the shop. It was truly a blessing in disguise.

Folks don't be understanding that taking care of black hair is not easy. Our hair is probably the most unique hair type in the WORLD. So many other cultures have straight hair or loose waves/curls making it much easier to comb and manage. Taking care of our hair is a whole full time job. And some of us just don't have time, skill, patience or the money to care for it the way we'd like to. My hair is matted right now for all of these reasons. Funny thing is it has grown more in this last year than it EVER has, obviously because I am not manipulating it. You aren't even lying about your job being a ministry. Praise Yah for people like you, cause He knew that some of us would need you. I wish we had someone like you who provided this type of service here in Kansas City. 😞

I had very matted hair as a kid. No one helped me, everybody made me feel ashamed. I went and cut it off myself. That's when my mother got really mad at me. But I didn't know how to help myself back then. She forced me to get a boy haircut to repair what I did. I love that you help people with this problem. It is so important. ❤
Yes, not all POC can do hair! That's especially true about natural hair. My sister sent her kids over to our aunts for the summer and my aunt called her halfway through to complain about not being able to do my niece's hair and to ask if she could get it relaxed. My sister told her to just take my niece to the shop to get her hair braided and she'd pay my aunt back at the end of summer break.

I've always had crap hair, so, although it's always bothered me, I've never had to spend a lot of physical time on it. The patience of that little girl sitting quietly for so long is seriously impressive. Congratulations to her parents for raising her well.

The hairdresser I went to laughed at me when I would cry and ask for a break... I felt like garbage every time I would go there and try to delay my mom taking me until closing time and she couldn't because of the embarrassment and I'm so glad you're doing this for your clients!!

When I was small I grew with my father and grandparents. I learned to do my own hair by watching my grandma comb her own hair. I practiced on my dolls and myself. My father taught me to detangle my hair in small amounts.Thanks be to God I learned to do my own hair. I've been doing people's hair from I was a teenager because of that
I have a lot clients with the same issue. I always tell parents to moisturize and and put in large twist every night. I know it's a headache, but It will save so much time and energy in the end. ☺️

One thing I learned watching videos on hair care and curly hair care is slippery is better. I have fine dense hair that is only medium curly. It gets these things called fairy knots. Just 2-5 strands tie themselves up and make a knot that if you pull it too hard just breaks the fine hair off. A fairy knot can start 5 minutes after you detangle your whole head. I've learned to line my caps with satin, sleep on satin pillowcases, but most of all putting my hair up loosely and wearing a satin bonnet. The black hair community taught me all that. Thank you for saving my hair. It's longer and healthier than when I straightened it daily. Slowly all the broken hairs are growing longer and blending with the rest. I think you are a wonderfully empathetic and compassionate person. Judgment has no place here. I really appreciate what I've learned from you and many others.

Look at her beautiful LONG hair! My daughter's hair mats easily too. She's 12 and finally knows how to detangle her hair by herself, but sometimes still needs my help. Her preferred hairstyle is with her sides and back shaved, which helps a lot to keep it detangled. As a white parent of a biracial black girl, I'm so grateful for all the people online who teach how to care for black hair. Thank you for not only taking the time to detangle the hair, but also teach your clients how to keep it detangled moving forward ❤️
Gosh that takes me back! My mum's hair was hardly curly at all so she couldn't cope with mine. I wanted locs so bad but I wasn't allowed. Now I have locs, looks soooo good. My hair is happy and Im happy, no pain just joy joy joy. Little Princess and her Queen Mumma might wanna think about locs, no pressure, just a suggestion. X

I admire your grace and kindness so much. It seems to be in short supply these days. My granddaughter had hair that used to tangle bad in just a few hours. When she was hospitalized she developed a bad mat. It took so long to get it out. It can happen so quick. No judgement from me!!

Once when I first worked in a salon a little girl was brought in by her grandma. The mom had neglected her hair. It was so matted the salon manager told us were not allowed to do it she had to see a doctor . I felt bad for her and hope it got sorted out .

I do my daughter's hair sometimes every week depending on the style. And it will still get this effing matted every time 🙄. So I feel for this mother because it is not easy.
I went through this with a child. I desperately wish I would have been able to have this help. It was right around the time of a divorce from the child’s male DNA donor. I ended up seeking the help of the one relative I had that would help without being a problem. Ultimately, we did have to cut a little off, but we did everything we could to keep the loss minimal.

My mother cut my knee length hair to a pixie when i was 6. She was unable to take hours to detangle my nightly rats nest. I was devastated at the time, but as an adult, i understand now that she was struggling with severe depression and mental illness. I wish i could go back in time and tell jer things would work out okay. You are truly blessed in your calling.

I have a pretty tall punk rock mohawk.
I fell ill and wqs unable to take proper care of my hair and hair spray and hair cement was left in my hair for about 1 month.
(I was bed ridden due to epilepsy)
I was so ashamed when i got better and looked at my hair,
I was debating shaving it all off.
(Me getting a mohawk was my gift to myself for getting clean off herion and ive had my mohawk for a 11 years now.

Love the post at the end of the video! I couldn't imagine being a mother during the lockdown. Props to the parents out there who did/are doing their best!! Nobody is perfect and I think it's safe to say that everyone struggled during the lockdown fs
I never knew what "fairy knots" were until recently, or how hair could become tangled and knotted immediately after combing it out! I've learned that it takes time and patience when doing hair for someone whose hair is like this and also the smile afterwards is priceless! KUDOS to you for your work!

My head gets matted on a weekly basis. I don’t wash my hair everyday, and I’m NOTORIOUS for a messy bun. Depression and stress are a big cause. But my hair is really fine too and ends up in a rats nest! Oh it hurts so bad to come and I lose so much. Thank you for fixing her hair and understanding! ❤️

I have straight hair and didn't realize how quickly mats develop until one of my student's came in with the hair at her nape entirely matted but disguised by brushing the smooth hair from the crown over it. A hairdresser worked it out, but the child didn't know how to brush from the ends and work to the roots until she was much older.
I have long thick hair so I'm grateful to have a mom that can comb it for me and I'm tender headed also but still growing it. I am obsessed with long hair

I use to give my sister-in-law a hard time because she always got her girls hair done. I had no clue. Her oldest went on a trip with me and it was up to me. Good Lord! I never said anything about it again.

Based on how her hair is, she should regularly get a protective style put into her hair, (i know and understand people can choose how to wear their hair, my suggestion is simply saying it would help to keep her hair from matting.)
Yes, and moisturizers galore! That helps a lot
Regular protective style for fine hair does more harm than good. Using light products, keeping the style simple and manipulation to a minimum is the way to go. 👍🏾
Her hair is really similar to mine. Being that the strands are finer, I can lay on my side for a few hours and wake up with it almost locked. And I shed a lot so the fairy knots are a constant thing. My maintenance routine is keeping it in twists for most of my time- every few days I section my hair into fours, un do the twists by section and rinse my scalp/hair of any buildup, shed hair and then retwist it back. It's the easiest way to keep the worst of the tangles away and my hair is at my shoulders now, 2 years after my big chop so it's growing pretty steady and healthy.
Also wearing a bonnet or scarf or some other protective hair covering especially when sleeping- but the retwisting every few days or so is the vital part since the hair still locs in a protective style. (That's actually how I started my locs myself when I had them lol)
Actually, depending on hair grade, protective styles kept too long will Matt up too. I’ve had twists snd braids and have had to cut my hair to be able to manage my hair. My solution after cutting my hair off was to wear wigs until it grew back into a length I was comfortable with.

Lockdown...school closed...mom having to either figure out work from home while doing school from home for the kids or figure out child care while working or sudden job loss...a lot to deal with

Thank you for helping this little girl. I have baby fine hair and it tangles so easily and you can go from no tangles to a mat of knots in just a couple of hours. She will always remember how you helped her. My Mom made me get mine all cut off.
