Yamaha YBR 125 Test Ride/Review - Best Commuter Bike?!

- Had a chance to take out this little YBR 125 the other day, actually surprisingly comfortable to ride. Is this the ultimate budget commuter bike? Quite possibly so!
This particular one was a 2010 model, I'm not sure if they are still making these anymore, but if you're after a second hand starter bike and you're on a bit of a budget, could be worth a look :p
Hope you enjoy the video.
Peace!

I own one in the jungles of Costa Rica. Roads are bumpy if not outright craters. Heat, rain, mud, and massive amounts of groceries on the back of it. Practically everything on it's been replaced. I have no idea what year it is. I'm probably it's 8th owner 😂 at least. It rides like a champ over these crazy roads. I love this bike and have since found out they're very well regarded in the jungle: easy to fix, parts easy to get, and nearly indestructible. I learned how to ride a motorcycle on these roads on this bike. I love her ❤
I just tell you this: mine has over 77000 km.
Bought new in 2007.
I used it for commuting and weekend rides.
Still rides great, and got some updates over time. Never needed major fixes.
YBRs are great bikes.
Yeahh they're solid
I want to get this bike but i’ve never had a bike before, would it be suitable for long commutes? It’s over an hour commute to my college, would it be okay on the highway?
@@Amnax17 A 125 on the highway is always a little iffy because you can't quite keep up (max speed is around 60~65 mph depending on the wind), but if you're careful and stay in the slow lane it's doable. My YBR is plenty comfortable for 1 hour rides for me. I don't mind doing long trips on it at all.
I have a ybr 125 and it’s my first bike. She’s the cleanest ybr I’ve come across too 😅 they’re really light which was helpful when I dropped her because as a reasonably small woman I didn’t struggle to get her back up again. The thing I don’t like is (other than being laughed at for riding a “piano”) if you want to go about 50 you have to pull the throttle back completely and she takes some time to get her speed up. They’re good first time bikes and I want to use her as a uni commuter bike since she’s so fuel efficient
10 hp of power isn't a lot
but it's enough for commuter bike
but it sure is a gas saver!
and a lot of fun to ride in
It's 14 hp
@@fame1254 nah m8 it's 10.8hp claimed
Listen, any bike that can hit at least 50mph is fine for me, where I live, that would be perfect, would likely take me to my work place and to my maths and English class much faster than my slow ass bicycle. I'd love to have any motorbike, slow or fast, I don't care. And besides, the slowest 125s will still like 50-60mph anyways, so it's all good. xD a 50cc moped can hit 30mph, so imagine a 125cc ?
@@Clarkkent163 My YBR125 is a 2011 model, but with 31500 miles under its belt.. Still does the full 70mph (on a flat, dry, even road...wouldn't go mad on a wet, uneven or broken surface one) Just look out for good gearbox.. selects neutral without issues, as all learner bikes will have had some bad crunching in the box department..!!
@@fame1254 Sure the spec sheet says 14hp but at best it would make around 11hp at the wheels when ran to a dyno 🤷
can't squeeze a lot of those "reliable hp's" with an Air cooled 125cc 4T engine 🤷
I've got a YBR and all I can say is if you want a bike that will last forever then get one. Thing is a tank !!
Hey I found one on gumtree for 400 quid but i think the carb is dirty or something and it's been sitting for a while but the seller said it still runs. Should I go for it this will be my first bike
@@AlexDjalo no .. sounds like there's more wrong with it. Bit of advice if someone states the carb needs a clean it usely means it's broken.
Had a YBR for a couple of years: cheap to run, reliable, light, fun, dead easy to ride (even for a 125). Correct about the skinny tyres on these basic 125s - iffy in the wet etc.
If you're going down the longer term ownership route on a 125, the higher quality, better/wider tyred end is the way to go: Honda CBR125R, Yamaha MT125, Suzuki GSXS125. They're a grand or so extra but ride, handle, perform, and grip a fair bit better.
Loved my YBR, redline everywhere and still 150mpg. Had loads of bikes since but probably had the most fun on my YBR
They still make YBR's... I own a 2018 model ybr and it just love, they come with airscoops and a louder exhaust... Owing to my commitment to burn lesser fuel, this bike is a perfect fit for commuting, and if you install better tyres, this bike can take you pretty much anywhere
In Pakistan yes, but rest of the world they have been discontinued since 2015 I believe
@@AhmeddR6 yes its true I guess, but the fact that this bike is in production in Pakistan is already a big deal 🤣🤣
Likewise I started off on a 125 and the ybr125 was it. I'd say its definitely very light and nimble. Very forgiving can't really get into trouble on one. Filtering on the ybr compared to my honda hornet 900 is so easy just like you stated no need to move the handlebars right/left to get the perfect squeeze. (Or in some cases with the honda horent just end up stuck inbetween cars... with nowhere to move) nice review.
Thinking of getting one again for a cheap cafe racer project
5:28 when he came I was like “HOLY SHIT THATS MY BIKE!!!!!!” I never expected to see it in a video which is not about this bike at all, I’m so glad I watched your vid (I watched it because I was thinking about buying the ybr 125 but I didn’t expect the gsx-r there)
Haha yeahh man, nice bike that gsxr 😜
ALWAYS fit Michelin Pilot Street tyres for these YBR's..also fully check out the gearbox for learner rider hammering, see if it selects neutral ok, how clean is the oil? then they're 110% brilliant.. My old Betsy has 31,500 miles on, still does 70mph and I'm 14 stone and has side panniers and a top box..!!
Michelin? You mean Rockelin? Hardest tyres you can find. Continental are way safer.
Did a CBT on one of these 😂 absolute badboy
Haha yeah man, they're sick 😝
Same, did it in march just gone
Cock and ball torture?
Also did my CBT on it a while ago, cool bike and very frugal on petrol!
Did one today on this😂
Boa tarde , tenho uma ybr 2006 , comprei um tanque da 2004 barato , as carenagens modelo 2006 serve junto c esse tanque mais velho?
Hey, got the 125 now. Its great fun!
Haha yess, good stuff, enjoy it dude!
I got a YBR125, you're right about 1st to 2nd, you really gotta kick it.
Just got myself a brand new KTM RC 125 can't wait to get on the road .
Ah congrats, yeah its a top bike!
Got my YBR 125 back in November 2015, a 2007 model. Had it until 2020 where I passed my A2 and then... didn't ride bikes again.
Picking up a CBR500R today, but wanted to feel the memories of that old bike that got me riding back then. Thanks for that!
Ahh no worries dude, hope the CBR is going well!
@@DanTheTwoWheeler Oh yeah I've been loving it. A great bike for long rides!
those aren't the stock mirrors i don't think
Hi everyone anyone that owns a ybr currently or did in the past I'm thinking about getting one. Found one for 400 quid it has 21k but the seller thinks the carb is dirty and the bike hasn't been run for a while should I go for it this will be my first bike any help will be much appreciated.
If you have a proper licence, mate you can 125cc on the motorway it is only 50cc that can't enter. But on a 125 the motorway is bearable at best.
Love the sound of this one! I've got a ybr but doesn't sound as good as this, what exaust is it?
The shifting into second gear issue is probably due to the oil being the wrong type or weight. This is a known issue with Yamaha bikes
Not true ... I've had 3 ybrs and there all the same it has a long neutral. Ask yamaha if you don't beilive me.
@@mrpantur7280 all I stated was that using the wrong oil is known to cause issues shifting into second gear. I acquired this knowledge from countless post on forums that deal with this very issue.
@shaggy I've owned a few Yamaha dirt bikes and currently own an R6. Shifting problems after an oil change happens to some people that use the incorrect oil. Might have something to do with wet or dry clutch systems or circulation of the oil in the transmission since the block and transmission share the oil. Example: If a car is designed to use a 0w-20 and you put a 10w-40 in it the oil pump and oiling ports can not manage the oil properly and you could experience catastrophic engine failure. Same thing applies to any engine, stepping outside designe specifications can and will cause problems.
@shaggy Just look out for good gearbox.. selects neutral without issues, as ALL learner bikes will have had some bad crunching in the box department..!! YBR's get a bad gearbox rep but only because being a learner bike..aka.. hammered box.. They're a brilliant wee bike..
Looking at one of these as Amy first manual bike, would you recommend?
I’m so glad that my ybr isn’t the only one that doesn’t like leaning or going into 2nd😂
Haha yeah same lol, I thought there might just be something wrong with this one 😅
DanTheTwoWheeler I’m having far too many close calls recently 😂
Happens with mine too 🤣
I have a yamaha ybr 125 2013 custom and it is a great bike for getting to work and back etc . great video 👍
Thanks dude 👍🏼
Hay dude thanks for liking my bike. My first bike was a H100S11, 600 Bandit, GXS1400, Pan European, CB1300, 1200 Bandit now I own a BOSS Intruder 1800. Bikes are awsome
No worries, wow sounds like you've had a fair few
@@DanTheTwoWheeler one or too lol
What would you say is better? The Cbf or Ybr?
6:15 I thought I was the only one, my ybr 125 does the exact same thing sometimes it doesn't like going into second gear from first and jumps on to neutral and end up doing blank revs on neutral.
Yep, seems to be a common issue 🤷🏻♂️
@@DanTheTwoWheeler Mine is a 2017 model, does your brother still have this bike?
@@PersonallyDeveloped Yeah he does
Ive done that a few times on mine haha
Did cbt on this and it took the piss
Would you recommend this to a first time rider the bit about the oil spooked me out about the bike a bit
Is that the carbureted model or the fuel injected one
Is it a good begginer bike i have 0 experience with shifting
Would this get me to France Belgium Austria Germany and back?
Todos que usam aqui no Brasil, falam bem dela.
I would like that 250 ybr is more common and less expensive.
Man Im considering going from vfr750f to something light and cheap.
I knew it was Manchester. Used to live there. Keep it up mate
I use this bike in school and i love everything about it, the dash, the front, the side, only thing i don't like is the tail, but i can maybe mod it. It's so confy and light and it feels like a honda hornet when riding, due to the dash.
I have a stupid question. Did you do your mod 1 test for the cat A in Darwen with a company from Salford about a month ago? I'm certain I recognise that voice...
Yes indeed I did
It just sip the fuel, and the rest is air.
I found out that 100 liter is enough getting from my place in Norway to the middle of Spain, so I guess I'll buy one, or the Keeway Speed 125, they are really similar.
I'm gonna buy my second bike, and it's going to be a Jianshe JS125, which is the copy of the ybr. You guys in the UK have some of those too. Do you know anything about it's reliability? All of the owner reviews say it's just like the ybr, and even some say that it's got more acceleration.
Stay away from chinese bikes
@@IAMAnsari nah
How much cost these bike
It's looks like a fun little bike however if you can legally own above a 125 cc I would go for 250 as a commuter. That means that you can have some fun with it on the weekends
Same here. Too bad not much choice in 250 segment here.
I’ve seen a lot about tyres on these, is it possible to change them to rectify the issue or is it too expensive?
not a problem at all to change the tyres and it is a really wise thing to do. i changed mine to michelin pilot street set, sizes as suggested in the manual. now it is going much better, recommended
Hey. I've got one question. Which bike is better? I can't decide between CBF 125 and YBR 125
both are perfect. i recommend injection ybr 125 because of the look which is better in my opinion
Struggling for parts for my ybr 2010 carb model.
I currently own a YS125 sadly i had to call the dealer to looked at it.. the poor thing stalls after downshifting at lights etc. and also when reaching 50 in 4/5th gear..still a good bike though bought brand spanking new almost from launch of the model. Feels good between the legs, nice a quiet so i don't annoy the neighbours. costs me around 500 quid for fully comp with extras. 20 fro tax and around 10 for full tank. Still going to keep the bike after i pass my tests to get my 3 grands worth out of it. and going from 1st to 2nd issue that you had still present on this evolution ..sometimes.but it's most likely me
1st 2 second isont an issue according to yamaha it has a long neutral you just need to put it into 2nd hard.
I have a YS125 which I bought from new and have never had this issue after 10,000 miles of riding
ありがとう!買おうと思っているので参考になりました。それにしてもカッコいいね👍
Thanks! I'm thinking of buying it, so it was helpful. Anyway, it's coolllll
What mirrors would you recommend
Interesting video there, those mirrors are the same as what you'd find originally on the Suzuki GN125. May be worth tracking one of them down and doing a review as they are decent little bikes, well the Jap made (pre 2001) ones are.
Hey man you are remembering memories and saying GOOD TIMES😂..... these YBR machines are launching nowadays here in PAKISTAN 😂😂😂 So, it's like something new & big for people here.....
Ah cool, hope you guys enjoy it over there
Passed my test on one of those, easy to ride :) But I like my SV650 way more :D
Yep, can't deny that power 😜
How tall are you? Does the bike fit you for your size? I am thinking about buying one of these to start of but the seller was worried about my height and me being to tall. I am 191cm (about 6,2)
I'm 5ft 11", should be fine for you as well tbh, but best thing is to always go and find one to sit on and see how it feels before buying.
0:52 what’s those lines? What does that road marking mean in your country?
It means you can't park there as it's close to the crossing
im planning on getting this bike. would it do well in winter, could i get better tires to stop slipping?
Hmm the tyres aren't very thick tbh, winter tyres can make a difference, but mostly riding within your limit, leaving plenty of stopping distance and not going out in crazy conditions are probably your best bet
Use this bike for 10 years the only problem i have is the the speedometer not working other then that engine its great
just saw this video while browsing... I still have my ybr 125G and using it to go to work with my wife.. it will be 12 years old on Nov 2022...best commuter bike for me... low maintenance., reliable, low gas consumption... i
Yeahh can't go wrong with some of these little 125s, super reliable, cheap to run, quite fun ragging about as well
Getting one of these on sunday, first bike seems a good start.
Good to hear!
What year is the one you are getting?
I've had mine for about 3 months now and I'm not bored of it yet!
It's a reasonably nippy bike too, get to 40 quick enough but after 50mph things really start to slow down!😂
@@alexonwheels4190 05, arriving tomorrow test rode today but too far to ride back for a first ride on it lol. I do have a question though I forgot to ask the seller, the lights come on automatically, I assume the normal light will be bright enough for night riding in cities etc?
For how much in dollars???
It's been a month, hows it going buddy? I'm scared to commit and buy one lol, as in a new rider too
@@biggideal it’s reliable so far, I need to get it into the shop to get the carbs or pilot jet cleaned something is gunked up, but then it is probably the full 15 years worth of shit, easy to work on though had no issues so far from just following the manual. From what I’ve read I’d get a 2010 onwards bike as they’re fuel injected so should be easier to start! They’re light and nimble which has been great for learning how to angle myself into corners and bends and what speeds are best so I don’t drop hah. After market parts are cheap enough and easy to come by as well, plus a wealth of knowledge from more experienced bikers online as a pose to what you would find with a Chinese rip off. As Alex on wheels said though, slows up big time one you hit 45-50 and you will really struggle up hill.
I have one of these, I like it, I bought a second-hand muffler for $150 and had the carburetor clean f200 dollarsars. I am a new rider, so I know that I was over charged.
However, the bike is not giving me the full power, compared to what I am seeing right now on this video.
Can you help me please?????
Hmm not too sure tbh, might be worth taking it in somewhere to get it checked out :/
@@DanTheTwoWheeler Thanks man,I got it repaired, it was the head that was bad
Respect Salford, got a buzz then!
Would this make a good winter bike? What do you think?
Hmm the tyres are quite thin tbh, so you'd have to be careful. Especially where there's oil patches etc. Would be better getting a 125 with a thicker rear tyre and if possible ABS if you're going to be riding in winter
How do you recon it will run with a 5ft 7 and 18 to 19 stone bloke on it
Erm well might be slightly slower but it'll still move 😃
@@DanTheTwoWheeler how do u recon it will go up hills as where i live there is loads on them lol
@@ryanl9041 125s generally aren't going to be the fastest thing ever up a hill but like I said it'll still get up them
@@DanTheTwoWheeler ok thankyou for your help buddy
Have a nice trip with you, thank you رحلة ممتعة معك شكرا

You can go on a motorway with L plates on what you can't do is go on with a provisional licence. You will get pulled as cops will assume you're learner and will tell you off for not taking them off but still legal with an full licence. Driving instructors use their cars on a motorway covered in L plates and is perfectly legal.
Say if you have to brake quickly at a red light but you were in 4th gear, can you shift down while stationary? or is that bad
Jack W Yeah you can with no problem. If the gear gets stuck just release the clutch a bit and push forvard and then it should be able to downshift
@@ThePelaajapoika50 Ah ok, but otherwise if I just kick it down 3 times without releasing the clutch will it drop from 4th to 1st easy as that?
Jack W It should If the transmission is fully functional
@@ThePelaajapoika50 Only problem I have then, is that this bike doesn't show gears haha, so pretty much guess work while you're stationary unless youve counted
@@J4ckmaestro It should be in first gear when it doesnt go down anymore =D
Can it maintain 80kmh (50mph) in inclines?
Hmm yeahh I think it should be able to manage that (just about 😅)
2:31, The tyres are awful on these but you can lean these bikes, I had a cbf 125 and my friend had a ybr 125 and both of us could scrape the footpegs on the ground in warm conditions
I've been checking out 125cc's for a while now and cb125f and ybr125 seems to be great budget choices but the tyres are the one single thing that sorta keeps me away from them.
Have read that Michelin Pilot Street is a good alternative for ybr125 and one should definitely ditch the stock tyres on both cb125f and ybr125.
It can get rainy here so I'd like to have at least some traction in wet as well.
@@maris478 you're absolutely right about the stock tyres, they were ok in the dry but offered very little grip in the rain. I went with Pirelli Angel City tyres on my cbf and my friend went with Michelin pilot streets on the ybr and neither had any issues
@@maris478 ALWAYS Michelin Pilot Street tyres for these YBR's..then 110% brilliant..

Sorry, its just really funny when you come from a 600 back to riding a small bike 😅 Not in a bad way tho, some of my best memories were on the 125. I really miss it!
@@DanTheTwoWheeler Ok, you've sold me back to planning on getting a 125cc as a starter again. I guess starting properly with a smaller bike is safer too. Thanks for the videos. Keep it up

I've tried the Grom, love it! Got two test rides on my channel of it 👍🏼
Do you prefer the ybr or your CBF you had?
Hmm been a whole since I've ridden that cbf. They're both very similar bikes. These ybr with the exhaust sounds epic, I didn't have anything on the cbf so I guess as it stands prefer this bike. But you could easily put an exhaust on a cbf and have the same effect so 🤷🏻♂️
