    T900, i just joined this community half a year from now, and the first aproach i had was a match between Yo and Hera that you casted. I love the way you cast, because it's not just about the game, it's your experience (emotional and rational) that's being shared with us. It's like i'm drinking a beer with some cool friend who talks about the thing he loves the most.
    Keep it going man, and don't apologize on giving your visceral opinions, cause is part of the beauty of it.
    Greetings from Chile.

    I totally agree on that point, that spent time with joy is not wasted. I had the same thought when I was 14-18 when everyone started doing alcohol and partying, I was at home playing videos games. In some way I wished I also joined the partying part every now and then tbh, but the time I‘ve spent playing back then was awsome. It was the golden age of gaming for me, I‘ve met soo many cool people from all around the world. It was not wasted time

    Mbl's army was so well articulated wow. Those types of pushes are the ones I love the most. Get a good ammount of trebs, put some great range units to destroy whatever they throw at the trebs, and if they rush all in, champions will do their thing. So cool to see that army push all the way from the south to his base.

    11:20 Regarding your concern about auto farms:
    I feel like some confuse this QOL feature with literal automated farm placement as it's the case for the console version where you can indeed toggle on that your vills will automatically place farms.
    With the feature from the PUP, you as the player still have to seed the farms one by one, all it does is removing mouse movement. Out of all QOL features added so far, this is the one where I understand the criticism the least.

  • @maxpower4435

    Regarding the auto farm placement:
    I really like to watch how pros place their farms under different levels of stress and compare the situations/players that end up with some nice T90farms vs. perfectly placed farms.
    From a player perspective, I also like to think about where I place my farms for good looks and efficiency (slow no elo legend right here), so jeah, it would be a loss in my book.
    But I can also see how it's a nice feature for other players, like the auto scout update

    Over 20 years after the game was released, it is now more popular than ever. How can the developers feel that they need to change core gameplay aspects? And if they do decide to change a core aspect of the game like the economy, how can they reasonably believe that they will manage to improve on the formula that has lasted for over 20 years? It seems insane to me that they would even consider touching mechanics of the economy!

    As an addicted gamer who used to play 70h while working a full time job, I used to be depressed about my state, like I felt worthless.
    Until one day I accepted it. This is me, this is what I enjoy, it's my personality.
    Following that acceptance, I wouldn't play more than 50h a week even when I have no work to do. Probably 30h top when working full time. And I manage to balance that with frequent vacations with my awesome wife, and about 10h a week of martial art practice which means I am godly HAPPY and fit as hell !

    What I want from AoE2 is:
    * unrestricted zoom, at least zoom-out (like in Supreme Commander), I want to see everything all at once
    * allow queueing (maybe with modifier key?) even without resources (so: do this when you get enough money), I'm fine with it being essentially random if you do it in >1 building
    * multi-point patrol (again, like SupCom) and general "mixed action queueing", I'm not asking the game to do things FOR me, but allow me to set stuff up and not have to click like a monkey
    * removal of trebuchets ;>>>
    EDIT: ironically what I want from SupCom is formations, advanced strances and movement speed adjustment from AoE2 xD

      absolutely true, age thrives off of when you're forced to steer. The problem is that age also thrives off of the perception and existence of fairness. If a map script can disadvantage both players in different but roughly even ways, I'd say it's S tier. I think T-90's issue is that Daut has a significantly more defensible map with no real downside.

    Interesting topic with the farm updates - but every other quality of life change they've made in DE compared to the original age of empires were well received. I feel that no matter your skill level, having slightly less time to worry about your farm placement will help invest that time in another part of the micro/macro that is more interesting, and won't reduce the skill needed. I'd rather see skill showcased in other parts of the game.

    i agree with the auto farm placement, so everybody can actually enjoy the depth of the game, not only the top players who have the skill needed to beat the quirks of an old game. Same that happened with auto reseed, multiqueue and "select all" macros

    • @paulk5670
      @paulk5670 Před 2 měsíci +20

      Hard disagree. At the lower level, the farm placement doesn't matter, actually placing farms does.
      That someone can spray and pray T90 farms and still perform well in other areas of the game shows that it isn't a hard barrier that's preventing people from exploring the game's depth. It is just another area someone can choose to optimize when you get to the bleeding edge.
      Keeping features like that is good for the game.

      Why even play the game? Everything is automatically done for you.

    • @volbla
      @volbla Před 2 měsíci +9

      Comparing it to qol features is an interesting take. Reseeding and auto-reseeding from a mill also takes away some depth/skill of having to pay attention to your farms, but was that really interesting minutia in the late-game? Do we want that kind of depth in our strategy game? You still have to pay attention to your economy in a macro sense (resource distribution; retasking idle vills), but is it crucial for the game experience to also micro your economy?
      When you think about it, most other ways of resource gathering are "automatic". You don't need to task lumberjacks to individual trees. You can just have 5 vills build a lumber camp and they'll automatically seek out the closest trees. Similarly, if you build a mill with no berries or deer around, it's safe to assume you want to place farms around it. Maybe bringing farming to the same level as all other eco isn't such a bad idea.

    • @adeadfishdied
      @adeadfishdied Před 2 měsíci +3

      This is definitely a “It’s not a problem for me, and I don’t understand why it’s a problem for you.”
      A bit tone deaf from somebody who has benefited from the QoL features that have come to this game over the years.
      If T90 had to play the original version of the game versus someone of a similar skill level he’d beat his head against the keyboard in frustration when he misses a late game reseed and loses a dozen farms. He has entirely forgotten that QoL changes are what makes the difference in skill level between pro players twenty years ago and pro players today. Builds are so tight because of auto reseeding, technology queuing, automatic resource gathering, send villagers back to work, shift clicking, and more.
      Denying lower skill players tools to help them enjoy the game is *not* good for the game. I don’t play competitively because it’s simply not fun to play against someone miles ahead of me. I am not a fast player. Transitioning from berries and sheep to farms takes minutes because I have to sit there clicking villagers, clicking build, clicking farm, finding a spot, clicking the spot, then finding another villager. It’s nice that he thinks everybody can just slap farms all over the place no problem, but it’s not reality.

    • @paulk5670
      @paulk5670 Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@adeadfishdied For what it's worth, I've been playing and enjoying AOE since ghe original game. I've never been a high level player, and I missed plenty of reseeds back in the day. It was frustrating when it happened to me, but great when it happened to my opponent. I never cared enough back then to get good at defending/doing knight or tower rushes. I got whomped by plenty of players that had.
      And for all of that, I've continued to enjoy the game. What actually needs to be fixed is how quickly players find the correct Elo so they can start having fun playing against people at their own speed on ladder. Not introducing things to make the style of game on ladder more homogenous.
      Low Elo legends is great content. There are plenty of people that enjoy that style of game. Custom scenarios continue to exist, as well as NR games, etc.
      Games having aspects that are hard is part of what makea them fun, because it gives you a sense of accomplishment for overcoming those challenges. I say allow the autofarm off ladder. Heck, bring back manual reseeding on ladder. Stop watering down the experience in an effort to appeal to the greatest possible audience, but accept that not every game needs to be pulling in Fortnite numbers to be profitable and worth doing.
      AOE2 is a game largely kept alive by nostalgia, and an establishd userbase. Small tweaks and efforts to keep it from stagnating is great, but if you atart changing things too much in the pursuit of chasing a larger playerbase, you are barking up the wrong tree.
      AOE3 and 4 were chances to go in new directions and they were largely flops. They should go make AOE5 if they want to appeal to a more casual, console based audience, rather than taking a working legacy game and trying to bootstrap the console market to it.
      And yes, my farms proudly look like crap and having played long enough means I'm playing games where I'm losing as many as I'm winning. Because ultimately that's how Elo works, and no number of QoL improvements will ever change that.

      I've seen that in SC2. In AOE2 it would greatly diminish the importance of scouting. Knowing the map and being able to identify areas of importance feels pretty unique to Age's character. I think maps need to be playable and fair, not neccessarily symmetrical. Forcing pure symmetry is easier, but comes at the expense of an important aspect of the game and would be a stealth nerf of civ bonuses around LoS/scouts, etc.

      It's taking away a skill people have been cultivating in a 20 year old game in the name of making it more 'noob friendly'. Of course there will be backlash. To yout point, why not have units auto split to avoid mango shots? That would help me personally more than farm placement. The issue with this update is that it is picking winners and losers and the frustration it removes (placing farms) isn't high enough on the loser's list (unlike reseeding which was much morr universally despised) to be worth it.
      Also, I think you misread that other comment in regards to SC2. They did nothing to inply they supported the watering down from BW, because they didn't mention it. They mentioned 'why not just have resources gather themselves'.
      Ultimately, messing with nostalgia in a game greatly supported by it to chase new users is a gamble. RTS's have *never* worked well on a console. Chasing that dream is a stupid one.

      Armor is useless against arrows 🏹 because the speed of the arrow can penitrate even plate armor in a direct hit. Best armor is the kind that deflects hits. And because an archor needs more mobility heavy armor means less accurate shots and slower firing rate.. when seconds matter extra armor just makes everything worse.
      If you are concerned about your archers bring a couple villagers to the battle field.. have them construct a wall.. distract the enemy with highly mobile calvary archers who shoot and scoot while the wall is being built.. then position your mass of archers behind the new wall with a few tanky units to absorb the damage while your archers hammer it down.. rotate heavy tank arrow sponge units to behind the archers where the healer units are.. constantly rotating not letting the enemy kill too many of the tanks units.
      To counter this strategy the enemy must be able to out range your archers with a trebuchet or batista or sneak in a heavy onnager to break down the walls. If you keep your villagers working they can construct fall back positions that further irritate and enemy and even a tower or two to slowly widdle away at their advance .. always keep some horse archers or heavy calvary in reserve to counter their trebuchet.. if they gaurd the trebuchet well your only hope is to block their resupply line and hope you can produce more replacement units than they can resupply

    Eye of the beholder. Having a game become robotic is not necessarily a bad thing because it allows the game to develop in other manners; one doesn't need to put the extra effort into thinking about the minor details and put the mind to other things. I feel it would be better to have a choice to make it robotic or not, depending on the play style. It would be interesting to see where this would go.
    Now, the reason why I say it is the eye of the beholder is that it really depends on how one person views the game. In this situation there is no absolute 'correct' way to do something...

    About the farms, let me start with an analogy.
    In Fortnite players that use a controller have access to Aim Assist, which assists a player that uses a controller in locking on to a target. Without this feature there could be no cross-play between the two communities - console and PC.
    I sense that everyone being caught blindsided by the farming issue forgets that controller players could definitely benefit from this feature. As it could offer a small first step towards helping them be able to play the game on a level that is consistently close to the average PC gamer.
    Moreover and perhaps crucially, Fortnite's competitive scene has virtually no controller players, meaning that the feature assists casual players in having a more or less consistent experience, whilst also accessing the rest of the communities pool of players, without having those "buffs" they receive be so unfair that a competent PC gamer will be to consistently defeat them.
    I hope this is the direction Microsoft is heading with this, and if so, I believe it would be extremely well played by them.

      Consoles have been able tp have a keyboard and mouse connected to them since the PS2 era. It's simply a better control setup for certain styles of games, including RTS.
      I'm a hard no for redesigning the game to make it more accessible to controller play, it simply isn't a good idea. Some games play better with dual sticks, some with mouse and keyboard. Letting people use different control inputs is fine, but it shouldn't take up dev time to create featuresets to try to buff it.

      @@paulk5670 I get your point on dev time.
      But let me clarify first that redesigning game should at no point be at stake, the game is amazing as it is.
      I'm talking about providing mechanics to players that play exclusively on controller with the goal of leveling the playing field between them and players up to our current 700-800 ELO bracket, and my hope is that this auto-farming feature ends up as an XBox controller exclusive feature.
      And again, taking as example the shooter I mentioned, skill expression at its highest level is always only achieved with keyboard and mouse anyway, so veterans would, if done correctly have nothing to fear over the long run.
      As for the reasoning it is as usual an economic one, if you are willing to allow controller folk to have a few of these "auto" mechanics, or other macros that don't utterly skew the game in their favor, then you end up with a much larger player base from which to draw sales on new DLCs.
      And the hope is that with that a larger player base will warrant a nice and fat bottom line for Microsoft, and more dev time for AoE2 down the road.

    I do not agree with the "auto farm" assessment at all. And totally blown out of proportion.
    Firstly, it's not a massive change and it doesn't mean that this happening at the expense of some other improvement. There is exactly zero evidence of that. So that is not a claim you can reasonably make.
    Secondly, it isn't "auto farm". It's auto placement. It does not manage the farm for you, it helps with placement and it is from aoe4… and works well.
    Essentially this is a quality of life feature and the placement of farms allows players to develop a skillset in other areas.
    At the end of the day, this is not a farm placement game. This is another example of a relative mole hill being hyped to mountain size.
    Things that make some small difference to eco management are not game breaking. And it is hardly the betrayal by developers that it is being portrayed as.

    I do not think farm placement is a skill expression. We already have a few improvements on how building placement works, like walls and gates. "Auto" farms frees time for the important aspects of the game during the mid and late-game. The most important part, where you build your mills and TCs, is still untouched and far more meaningful than doing precision work while the enemy is at your gate. In my humble opinion.

    I gotta disagree. Yeah, maybe dev time could be better spent elsewhere, but I don't think farm placement automation is going to handicap the game, as opposed to make it more accessible to more people. For some people the apm to manage that is fun and skill-based, for others it's pointless busywork when the technology exists to avoid it.

      for an RTS like AoE2, lowering the skill ceiling is really not healthy, because then you get situations where you are unable to comeback or hit something from your opponent when he's not looking. This game needs the high ceiling of APM to balance out your knowledge of macro, it's the little things that make RTS games so fun to play. The only issue I feel that AoE 2 currently has is the RNG variables of pathing, because you can literally just lose for it because of how broken it is.
