Playing with Sculptris #3 - Crocodile

- So... forgive my vanity, but this came out a good... 1000x or so better than I expected. I checked out this video here (bit.ly/1OqrCUk) and while it is long, I heavily recommend watching it if you want to try getting into Sculptris as well. This taught me a lot of new techniques and ways of manipulating certain tools, so I opened up Sculptris, practiced some new keybinds, and then decided to just try and make something with a fully body, and figured a reptile would be a good start.
I am really surprised with this, haha. I opened a single picture of a crocodile, and just tried. Goes to show what practice and experimenting can do!
I've posted a larger image of this onto DeviantArt as well, for anyone that may be interested in viewing a still image - bit.ly/1UipHIN

As always I am open to feedback on these sculptures. Also, if the background is too strong, please let me know and I'll dim it down for next time! Cheers :) *Edit! Updated the textures to this croc;* bit.ly/1RXIg4F
Background fits perfect. Cheers too!
+DarkEdgeTV It is all perfect . :D
+DarkEdgeTV The accuracy is real.
Dark! One more thing.
I might use this to make a CZcams picture and I was wondering if you can create some thing and take a picture of it ;) and if you will do a tutorial can you show how to chang the back round? Thanks! Btw I might use it for youtube pic a art program would be better tho XD
Pls more. I like it so mutch. And the Background is great
Never stop making this series; the balance of lifelike and cartoonish design really make this look awesome.
once again, you have delivered a great creation.
Nnnniicccceeee.
My only criticism would be that the back legs look a bit off. They should be more sprawled out to the side and the ankle should be closer to the ground.
I hope that was helpful. :P
I find it so awesome that you're actually really good at modeling outside of spore! These videos are great. ^^
+Annekewren Cheers, that was helpful! and I'm glad that these are enjoyable to watch :D
Magic
You are such a great artist to be able to do this
You should definetly play more with this, with your skill, damn...
Nice work! Crocodiles are so cool!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHOWING ME THIS. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A PROGRAM LIKE THIS FOR 5 YEARS!
0-0 dude 5 years XD at least you found it
+Grim Reaper (Death) Awesome, have fun! :D
Why are your creations so freaking amazing!?!?!?! So realistic, really well done. Keep it up Dark Edge, always loved your work. :)
As soon as I got to 4th minute I was Like "That's it- I am subbing"
Ty so much, awesome work!
Wow!I love it's......cool and beautiful!
Man, why haven't you gotten into modeling for huge game studios?
Wow! You are so creative.
This looks amazing! If you want a challenge, I'd love to see you tackle a styracosaurus.
That would be painful
This is so cool! I love it! And next time, can you make a Giganotosaurus? Please? Thanks!
How are you so good at everything your amazing!!!!
Wow, you learned prettu fast! How cool is this! If you want a suggestion, I would put an ball inside the hole you made on the eye. maybe it would make it look like more an eyeball.
+Rexog Thanks a lot! and I'll have to try that out next time :D
Very nice! I believe it is possible to paint textures an normal-maps.That way, you can make the green regions look more scale-like.
Crocodiles are possibly the hardest creatures to get right. What you need is more practice. Start by downloading some brushes specifically tailored to the creature you are making. Crocodile scutes are fascinating and require a lot of time. The snout isn't quite as thick and the eyes are almost sticking out and not so sunken.
+Raptorzesty Cheers for the feedback - and I've found some brushes, textures, materials and search... this program never ceases to amaze me, the possibilities are crazy with these new tools
I have been watching you a while now and i always thought that you could be a great moderator (If im mistaken my thought was that you would be a good game model make). This is really impressive and not all people can do this good as you can. I feel that this is just the beginning and that you will make something really big that will make my jaw drop. Im really sorry if i have some mistakes in my text i am not english or american.
+Valerija Ismagilova Hey, thank you very much! I'm glad I've finally taken the time to try and learn, and that I get to share it with all of you! I hope I do make something that'll make your jaw drop :) I have ideas, I just need to figure out how to execute them! Also, your English is fine ^^
You made a higher res/better looking Crocodile in 90minutes than Farcry did with 4 years of development...
could you please make a feralagatr?
DarkEdge i love you!!!
Thats truly amazing
niiiceee !!! can you make Toothless please ? you have a talent !
She made a lot of them on spore
How are you this good
+ 1 subscriber
from spore to sculptris, you've made a huge leap of your creativity. why not step it up a bit and make 3d animations of your creatures. You would do awesome things in the film industry if you keep this up!
+keyboard warrior Thank you! I've had quite a few recommendations to get into Blender for animating, I am certainly going to give it a try once I feel confident with these models :D
Godzilla would be awesome to see scultped by your hands
I expect the croc to jump out of the screen... good God your skill, woman.
This is so cool and it looks great! I have a question: will you combine this with spore like you try to recreate for example Jowwie(/jowwy)
+IAmAViking Yes, absolutely! Funny you mention the Jowwi as well, I just did a sketch of one yesterday (need to get the scanner connected before I can share it).
Have you ever considered using ZBrush? It's a great program and it has some great features when you get more advanced with it.
+PYORO I've only put a small bit of thought into it, but if there's a free trial, I'll have to give it a shot when I feel I'm ready to take that leap :D
OHH!
another video to put in my schedule
of
watching videos
also
how about a try at the shakr??
I'm amazed by your skills!
If I could make one comment, its that the base of the neck looks a bit thin.
But anyway I think this is awesome
Could you make something from Greek mythology next time?
darkedge, its about time you have found your dream tool.glad to see it.on that note, you should start uploading your models to TF3DM, and if you want better graphics quality or effects, they are easy to set up in unity3D, because I know once you start, you wont be satisfied with sculptris' rendering engine.
+sam clarke Thanks a bunch, I'll have to check both of those out! Edit; Ok Unity3D already sounds mental
unity is a game engine, however it has a lot of good qualities. point is, take one of the models you have made in sculptris, amp the mesh's uvs, make some textures and you are good to go. I don't like using blender/maya for my rendering, I have more speed and control in unity. TF3DM is the leading online model sharing site. don't knock unity till you have tried it. its the only step left before your models look like professional art!
Thank you *very* much, this is brilliant! Very much looking forward to trying it out now
good luck.
if you want any help with ANYTHING, let me know. i'll even script for you.
Thanks a bunch, I'll keep that in mind ^^
yeh i like that buut the back legs are...a little strange idk xD i think u know what i mean anyway i think u can make a nice fantasy monsters buut this realistics animal are so hard to make
I love your videos but my only criticism is that a crocodiles back legs do not bend that way.
You should do Deathwing's head in detail
+Potatoparadise Now that'll be a big challenge! One day, definitely :)
wow! amazing!!
You should try a gharial next, the're similar to crocodiles but diferent at the same time
WOOOOOW SUPER Crocodile
Awesome!!!
Man this is awesome, do you work as a content developer too? Many 3D games would love your talent.
+Rafael Alves I do not, but that's my goal! :)
I think you should make creatures from the souls series. (the souls series consists of demon souls, dark souls, dark souls 2 and bloodborne)
Your art is absolutely amazing, it has inspired me countless times. I only have a simple laptop... and unfortunately no WiFi. If you can give any advice for me to get into animation, that would be nice.
Take care
+scott rautio Thank you! I'm afraid I have no advice for animation :( For 2D animations MacroMedia Flash used to be really good, but then again it's been about 5 years since I used it. for 3D I hear Blender is great, but I haven't tried that either. Still, I hope either of these can prove useful to you!
Sculptors like DarkEdge here should be making avatars for MMO games..
NICE!
I just can say this : WOW :O
Can you do a panther? PLEASE because there my fav animal! My name is Minecraft is even Panther890 XD
Amazing sculpting! That being said however, I feel like following a reference more closely would improve it as a crocodile. People have already pointed out the neck and back legs so I won't reiterate. But the bone plates you gave him on his back and especially tail look more like a dragon or crab. Crocodile plates are smooth rectangles with a small raised pyramid like pinches in the middle. And the ridges are in two even flat rows with spines shaped more like flat triangles in two parallel lines, separated by flat plates, than conical spikes, they are very even and symmetrical unless damaged. I hope my critique was helpful. Can't wait to see more from you.
Your critique was very helpful, thank you :) I've started using more reference images as has been recommended, especially for anything that resembles a real animal (such as my latest video, a Gecko). I may come back later on to give the Crocodile another crack and compare it to this. Your point on how the plates are rectangle with a "pinched" raised pyramid is an awesome way of describing it, I'll be sure to remember that next time I try it out. Thanks again!
+DarkEdgeTV you are very welcome! I'm glad my critique was helpful. :)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
If you havent done this already, it would be great if you made a video on yutube about making the megalodon in sculptris and i dident mean anything annipropriet but i just needed to tell you that so that you woulddent have wooried that i may have an annipropriet personality in the future and i promise you that i wont have an annipropriet personality in the furture.
You clearly have a lot talent, I'd like to see you create your own creatures though.
Well, maybe something smaller to start with lol, but making stuff like legendary creatures will give him a lot more creative freedom.
***** My bad
are you just really good or is the program that easy?or Both?
WOW!
looks great only thing i dont agree with is the song so no complains
These are really cool, maybe you should dedicate 1.5 - 2 hours on your next stream to play around with viewers ideas xD Then we can add top hats to everything! :D
+Diamond WRU (DiomondCelebrateions) Good idea! :D
Das ist cool gemacht👍 kannst du auch Ohnezahn nachmachen?
how did you made it without any reference or a isometric drawing?
Awsome
i keep trying to open it it says "unidentified developer"
And just for constructive criticism, the back legs are very off.
As it seems it's been said already, the back legs could use a bit of tweaking. Additionally, a relatively nit-picky critique I could offer is they eyes are a little too far apart. An alligator/crocodile has eyes really far above their head and generally lack an overhanging brow.
But good work otherwise. ^^
Background is normal. But crocodiles don't have battle spikes on their tails, like on this. Yes, they have spikes, but not so big. (Sorry for my mistakes, 'cause I'm from Russia)
Whats the point of creating something if you cant put battle spikes on it.
+lagalil oh sorry, didn't think about it. Yeah, you are right
As awesome as battle spikes are :D I agree, I did do the tail incorrectly, and quite messy. I'll need to work on that for next time!
i live in Australia lol GDAY MATE! also whats the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?the answer is below
one sees ypu later and one sees you soon! (see ya later alligator ans see yo soon crocodile!)
qual é o nome do jogo
what are the chances of u doing a bear
you should really try making sfm's for tf2. its source filmmaker
Can you make some tutorial videos ? I have problems with the control of the programm.
+Tizian Scholz As soon as I can plan how to make one, I definitely will
Thank you
Can you make a T. rex
Just one thing I have to say
Nicccceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
the neck is a bit long
on this
can you create malachite from StevenUniverse
Would've been even more cool if it was sarcosuchus instead of just any other croc, great work though!
I wish I had your skills
+Just a Zubat I have to agree! Also, I'm still new to this, so any skills I have here, you can get as well :D
how did you copy the teeth? I've been trying to figure that out
Yeah and how can he select the areas like the legs or the body
+JamanoFX Games und Games! She actually creates a new shape for each of the new areas
Daniel Vandermeulen I know, but how did he selected these? I only can select them all after i created a new area, or nothing.
+Daniel Vandermeulen Is correct. Sculptris seems to select different things automatically when you try to interact with them - If you're trying to deselect things before selecting, I think holding Ctrl and moving anything in the background (away from the model) resets your selections.
The Copy+Paste thing is just changing selection and then your usual old Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V
crco
teach me ;^;
이거 스포어 맞죠..?
Awesome. I don't really have a lot to criticise, but there are three things which are a bit off (well, two and a half). Firstly, the back legs are back-to-front. The knees should face forwards. Secondly, the body is far to round and muscular. It should be much flatter, almost obese-looking (the same goes for the legs, here), and hugging the ground. Crocodiles rarely lift their bodies up, because they don't usually have to, seeing as how they usually float around on the surface looking like logs. Thirdly, the neck is too long. Again, adult crocodiles almost look obese, and their neck isn't an exception. Take the neck you've got there and squish it to about half the length it is now, and I think you'll have it.
These aren't big issues, it's fine as it is, but since you encourage constructive criticism I just thought I'd nitpick a bit. Really, the biggest issue I have is the back legs. They really throw the whole thing off.
+Magnus Anthun Thanks a lot for picking those out, and in such detail as well. I was aware of the back legs, a little but conscious of the neck, but the whole positioning/weight/proportions is a fantastic point and lesson
***** You're welcome, I guess. I wasn't really expecting you to reply, but I guess I like you even more now (as a youtuber, mind you).
Like I always say, I might not be able to reply, but I try to read them all. Especially when I've just asked for critique, so thanks for providing :)
Can you make godzilla?
+Frej Entin Here he is! :) - czcams.com/video/vYIOWA1lF5o/video.html
