Pushing The Big KLR650 On Ridiculously Fun Tracks

- Join me on an adrenaline-pumping solo adventure through the rugged Australian bush on my trusty KLR650.
Starting in the pine plantations of Narbethong I tackle fast, fun, and challenging tracks, discovering hidden campsites and breath-taking lookouts.
I search for Yea Rock near Buxton, and make my way to the Devils Staircase Tk and Siberia Gap in Toolangi.
I also run into a group of adventure riders stuck on a tricky climb, and have a crack at it myself solo.

Was there for ten years from 19 and left when i was 30 so saw mainly the inside of clubs. If you ride through the city and Richmond and deffo Brunswick st id love to see the footy.
But sweet to see the out skirts of Melb again.
When i flew out the whole place was on fire im sure you remember that horror so good to see it all lush again.

I could definitely throw some city footage in a video, I often ride through those places on my travels, I used to actually live on Brunswick st Fitzroy a few years ago.
Likewise I would see a lot of the inside of the pubs and clubs not that long ago.
Yeah it is great to see it all green again after the fires, life’s back to its best again after a few horrible years down here.
I'm just a Learner rider on an Adventure model and love the security of knowing the Tractor Factor gets me anywhere my beginner skills takes me.

Your footage is the only one that portrays the actual angle of the ascent. I grew up down that way way and with modern cameras it's hard to relay the angle. This does. Well done. Interesting that some manufacturers vehicles cannot get up the same places. Let's be honest, you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter. To be fair, (96% of all "Adventure" bike riders are crap, the brand or type of bike will never help them. Get some good coaching, buy good gear, upgrade your suspension if your bike is a KLR like mine and explore the possibilities. You ride the pants off your bike, just like me. Lots of 5cent/50 cent sphincter moments - and when you get to the other side, the growth /enjoyment and fun level is infectious. Long time ago, but try the Collingwood spur track in the VHC. What a great place to grow up. So many fun tracks in the area.
The KLR gets a lot of hate, but it manages to get it done off-road, like you say where other more expensive bikes can’t. Takes a bit more effort to wrestle it though, but I have a lot of fun.

I’ve put Collingwood spur track on the list for next high country ride. I have seen that one on the map before and always wanted to try it, looks tough!

Yeah sounds decent now, the yoshimura is nice, not too loud. She sounded a bit like an agg bike off the shelf.
Fun vid, love the grunty sound of that KLR compared to my small bikes. Riding solo is great fun, I ride alone 99% of the time that way I'm never relying on others for me to get out and have some fun. As you say with a couple basic precautions, sat phone, letting someone know where your going, knowing your limits ect it's not that risky. On the down side I do come across a lot of tracks I'd try with a riding partner but skip and think better not try alone. 👍

Yep spot on, it’s nice to have the option to roll out whenever you are ready, and be able to plod along at your own pace.
You are right though, it does limit track selection a bit, but I think it is fair trade off for the extra level of adventure it brings.

I’m running the Yoshimura exhaust. I really like it. Not sure how much it adds performance wise, but I think a bit. And i love the sound and look. It’s pretty loud, for some maybe too loud.

How far did you get on Anderson Spur track? I've ridden that hill and turned back to re-join another rider. Another time I tried it from the other end and was stopped by a heap of fallen trees.
Link track is a short but fun track off Nursery Spur Track.
I need to check out Yea Rock next time I'm up that way.
It is a great spot for the adventure bikes, loads of fun tracks.
I took Anderson Spur Tk all the way through to the plantation rd, I did see those fallen trees, they are cut now. That part of the track is a pretty tough climb, thats basically where those 4 blokes I ran into couldn’t get past.

Does track mean trail in English, or is there a distinction between a track and a trail?
Slightly different meanings In Australia, the bush tracks for 4WDs and motorcycles are formally called tracks. In my interpretation I always thought a trail is something that is smaller and single file, like a walking trail, or an enduro trail, mountain bike trail etc, and the bigger ones that a 4WD can fit on we generally always call them a track.
Have you done any suspension upgrades on the Koolest Lime Rooster ?
The koolest lime rooster has basically no performance upgrades, she is stock as a rock. Other than the exhaust.
I’m definitely open to the idea of some suspension upgrades though. Have you done it on your KLR? If so how did you find it?
KLR would make 90% of those guys on the other bikes more capable offroad. REAL TALK. I own 2 klr, 890. Dad owns T7. He had to ride my KLR out 1 day when it got slippery. KLR = TRACTOR. SPOT ON MATE
Yep I agree. Once you get over the weight of the klr, you realise just how planted it stays on the ground, epic traction with the right tyres, and just enough predictable power gets you up almost anything.

I’ve not ridden the T7 but it looks like it would be a bit taller and maybe a bit harder to handle than the klr, and more power in some situations can cause trouble.
No sorry my man, one does not "push" a KLR650. The KLR650 is so gutless you just whiskey throttle everywhere!
My man! Not sure if you watched right through the video, at 17:20 you will see the gutlessness of the KLR seems to not matter when trying to “push” it up a tough hillclimb that multiple husky 701 and norden901 turned around on, bikes that have 2-3x the horsepower and 50kg lighter, still couldn’t get those boys up the hill, I “pushed/whiskey throttled ” the KLR up no problem, so call it whatever you want.
