      True and I agree Russian assets should be used. But even if we did foot the bill the money will not flow one way. An independent democratic Ukraine will provide a lot of opportunities and will be keen to encourage investment through incentives.if we can ensure Ukraine's success it will be a powerhouse in Europe. ​@@steveo976

      they cant no bank in the world will allow it, you legally can only freeze it and has to be unfrozen if conflict come to an end, you can however keep sanction Russia not doing bussnies with them and hope there will be a leader giving you money to drop that, there is no guarantee tho, some countries been under sanctions a long without give in.

    Did Russia not seize western assets? Hundreds of passenger aircraft, oil field equipment etc? Could at least part of Russian state assets be seized in payment for those? Anyone know?

      those are hard assets like stores, oil facilities, aircraft parts. they've been written of already. Russia has liquid assets in US banks; certificates, currency, etc. thats earning interest.

      Yes it can. Estonia just today made it possible for the russian frozen assets to be seized to help compensate Ukraine for russia's destruction. All the necessary laws are in place now. It could be done in the U.S. And in Estonia. It can be done in all other countries as well.

    This Law makes perfect sense, consider this...Law Enforcement officers normally confiscate the proceeds of crime from criminals such as drug cartel bosses, since Mr Putin's regime are effectively international criminals, confiscating the proceeds of their crimes is no different, so yes, this Law should be passed asap.

    I don't think this is a good idea myself because of the precedent it sets for all countries and how it will probably boomerang back and impact the West at some point. So I agree with the Russian government on this specific point, very bad precedent. At some point Russia is going to want to trade again with the West and that I think is where we say........OK but you need to pay reparations for this last war. I don't see Russia going for much longer than 10 years in it's current attack the West on all fronts approach. I think in the next 10 years there will be a coup or uprising and Putin will be gone. I think we need to be patient as we were with the Soviet Union.

      @@VictorLopez-sh6lp Yes. As long as russia won't withdraw behind own borders innocent Ukrainians will keep dying. But they will never stop defending their country and identity. All russia has to do is to go home, then no more people will die.
      Then the question arises as to how russia will pay for all the destruction they've done. For Germany after WWII it took them almost eight decades and that with a solid economy. russia won't have that luxury but that's the situation they chose for themselves.

      If the law says "seize" the money will be seized, not stolen. It's a matter of doing the legislative work to allow the money to be seized for the right purpose. Estonia just today passed the laws necessary for allowing russia's money to be seized and used to compensate Ukraine with.

    Will there be two currency systems in the future, the West ( Dollar) v BRICS currency ?
    Imagine any country who think if they have any money in the West it may be seized, there are not likely to keep it in western banks.
    So gold would be a good bet.

      @@ratatatuff We get 20% of our raw nuclear material from Russia until what, yesterday (read the news). Don't forget fertilizer, of course giant oil fields, loads of raw materials. They will not be isolated unless they choose to be. They want as high of prices as they can get of course. The war is going to end. The sanctions will stop. And the world economy will still be based on one money.

      No. The insurance company will compensate russia for the ½ of Nord Stream that they own, that is _IF_ russia can first beyond any doubt prove that they did _NOT_ sabotage it themselves. I find that highly unlikely.

Millions were stolen from the Russian treasury, the people's money, and funnelled into off shore accounts making his ex fsb pals incredibly rich and ensuring their loyalty.
