When my dad went military school, they had their own try not to laugh challenge. He said how it worked was that people would be put into pairs and a man would walk around to each pair. If the man made one of the guys laugh, their partner would get hit in the chest with something. Whatever it was that was used to hit them wasn't entirely horrible, but it still hurt. The person would keep being hit as long as his partner kept laughing. My dad said that the man said at one point "Stop laughing! You're killing your partner!"

Why is this test relevant at all? When would a police officer ever be in a situation where laughing or not is life or death? It’s like the military as well, doing exactly what the instructors say is stupid, if you know there’s smarter way to do things, that uses less ressources, energy, or time. Humans are being trained, not clones or robots.

My DI's in the Marine Corps were absolute masters at getting recruits to lose their composure when at attention. They came up with the most hilarious, crude, and sometimes downright painful ways of getting recruits to crack. The first time you crack tends to be the last time because the smoking that comes afterward is something you never forget. My rack mate was terrible at keeping his bearing when the DI's would do something funny(he was good with physical pain or loud getting in his face but if it was funny he would break), and anybody who has been through USMC bootcamp knows they almost always smoke the guys to your immediate right and left so as his rack mate I had to push A LOT on the quarter deck because he couldn't keep his bearing when the DI's would push his buttons. I think we were in third phase before he finally learned to consistently keep his bearing, but man oh man were those first two phases rough and it wasn't even me screwing up.
