Investigation Puts Ancestry DNA Kits To The Test Among Sets Of Triplets

  • Millions of people are purchasing and using home DNA kits to determine their ancestry. Inside Edition enlisted the help of two sets triplets and a set of quadruplets to investigate the accuracy of the at-home tests. Their ancestry should be absolutely identical since they all came from the same egg. Unfortunately, the reveal confused and disappointed the sisters because of the varied results. The set of quadruplets were almost identical and did not have the variations seen in the triplets. #InsideEdition

    @somejoe7777 Před 6 lety +289

    This is very easy to explain and is fully expected with these tests. The issue is that for $99, these companies do not check every individual gene on your DNA. They select a random handful and test only those. Then they match each gene that they tested to a database to tell where it came from. Now, knowing that, there will be different results for each person tested because the handful of random genes that they test will be different each time. Let's say you have a very distant ancestor that is Native American. There is only a small chance that that one gene that is of Native American ancestry will get selected to be tested. So in all likelihood, your results will come back with 0% Native American ancestry even though it's there. If you repeat the test several times on the same person, eventually that gene will get randomly selected and your results will show 1% Native American.
    This is what happened with the triplets. They have a lot of French and German DNA, but the random selection for each sister picked up a different amount of French and German genes.
    Same with the other triplets -- they have a very small amount of Scandinavian ancestry, but the random selection caused those Scandinavian genes to be missed in two of the sisters, but detected in the third.
    If you want 100% accurate repeatable results, then you can test every gene, but that will cost a lot more than $99.

Secondly, very high confidence levels would probably greatly increase the cost of the tests. A 50% confidence level is reasonable for the purposes indicated and the extra costs for a high confidence level would be difficult to justify. (I don't think you understand how the term "confidence level" is used in statistics.)

    This is very misleading.
    1. Mother's and father's DNA does not pass down to all offspring in exactly the same ratios.
    2. The number you see in the test is the AVERAGE of numerous, numerous tests which often have a great range of percentages. That's why the average is what's presented to you and isn't always exactly the same.

      FirstLadyJoy try one of these three companies. Plus there is at least one more and even a free test you can do.

      For just ancestry, the new company livingDNA (80 regions) seems pretty good. It cost $159 and is based out of the U.K. 23andMe (31 regions) does ancestry for $99 and $199 for ancestry, some health reports, and fun reports like eye color. In the future, 23 may offer more health reports too. With 23andMe and ancestryDNA you can also download your raw data and upload it to promethease for $5 which can give you more health info (still has to be taken with a grain of salt though) and carrier status info on stuff 23 isn't allowed to tell you and that ancestry wouldn't tell you. I have no idea if you can do this with livingdna though.

      Could always go to the courthouse and ask who gave you up? Thats a start... had a friend do it that way and then did dna to prove the ancestry...

    Although their genes must be identical at fertilization, they have each been mutating separately since, which would mean their DNA is not exactly the same. Although, this can't account for their genes being traced to different geographic regions. Maybe a flawed method of tracing is being used.

    Even if your siblings, you can still have different dna. You can get certain genes from your parents that your siblings don’t have and vice versa. I’m assuming the same with twins

      late reply, but identical twins/other multiples should have the same dna because they come from the same zygote
