    People love bringing up that Notre Dame game, but really, having a bad game doesn't mean ANYTHING. Every QB in the Hall of Fame had bad games. Games where they made bad throws or bad decisions. It just happens. What a QB does on a consistent basis is way more important than a couple bad performances.

      That wasn't a bad game. That was a massive black mark on his college career. He finally faced a NFL DC and a very good college defense with maybe 6 NFL players on the Defense.
      He proceeded to have not only have a rough game but show great weaknesses that proves he isn't the greatest prospect in the past 20 years.

    • @PeteZam
      @PeteZam Před 3 měsíci +25

      he had way more than one bad game. he has 5 or 6 games vs top 25 defenses in his career, and he sucked in every single game. he avg 172 yards per game, with 6 tds and 6 ints on 52% completion percentage. caleb williams is about as generational as trevor lawerence. the caleb williams hype is out of control. Marvin Harrison Jr is easily the best player in this draft, and its not even close. hes a 6'4" version of his dad, who is a hall of fame WR and top 25 all time WR, and MHJ has the potential to be significantly better with his size. since 1995 there have been a handful of mega prospects at WR, randy moss, larry fitzgerald, megatron, and to a much lesser extent julio. MHJ is going to be on that list after he posts his freakish numbers at the combine/pro day. the guy is gonna put up more reps on the bench press than most linebackers and some lineman. he squats more than a lot of them. hes gonna run a 4.3 something. his athletics scores will test off the charts. hes gonna be in the 90th percentile for nearly everything

      his o-line play was awful against good teams - meaning, he's just like most qbs when you can get pressure on him all the time.
      anyone who looks at his losses should see this, but no, they bought into the narrative that he does poorly against good teams because he just isn't good, instead of understanding that the '23 sc team in particular was pretty awful after the first few easy games.

      And if #15 Dorian Singer stays on his line, it's a completion. Cardinal sin for a receiver is to get off your route bc there's traffic, particularly running behind it. It's no fault of Caleb's here. In fact, it only highlights his ability to navigate the pocket, be quick and make up for the lack of protection he had. Dorian is a first year player at that program, and he will get better, but believe me, I'm sure he was chewed out in film that week.

Caleb will be fine when he gets in. Mahomes and Allen were both projects coming out. Bears have never had the 1st overall pick nor a true gun slinger behind center. IF Poles sticks with JF and he regresses, then there’s a good chance the team is sub .500 again, and a very good chance Poles is fired. QB is the biggest decision for a GM, and in that scenario, Poles would have passed on two consecutive #1 picks in favor of a top 20ish QB who can’t get over the hump. What people don't understand is that Williams was the best pocket QB in college football for the past few years. Unfortunately, his OLine was horrendous, especially this past season, and his receivers have never been great, so he always has to escape the pocket or wait for someone to get open. Those are the type of plays that usually make it into highlight reels. You never see his anticipatory throws, pocket presence, progressions, short passes, etc.

Then play 2 is an obvious terrible throw by the QB and you're blaming the tight end for not being "over here". The tight end ran to an on space and turned around an CW overthrew it. 1 2 3 hitch throw quarterbacks have been very successful in the NFL. I think teams that need a quarterback that can "throw from different arm angles" and have the "ability to extend plays" dont actually need a quarterback, they need an offensive line. Look at how well Joe Flacco did last year with a top 5 o-line, he did pretty good for a 38 year old guy.

      @@bkg5494 you guys are on it. I largely agree but would like to add that I've watched all Caleb's games at OU and USC. The kid is dynamite in structure. The reads are quick, the release is even quicker. He loves taking what the defenses gives him. Unfortunately he had to rescue his team, erase mistakes so often that he believed this is what he had to do, and outside of five picks this season, and 14 over three years, showed he can actually get it done at a highly proficient level.
      He didn't play any worse as his career professed over three seasons, the teams around him got worse (that's on Lincoln and his staff). The Notre Dame game was his worst game of his career, by far, and due to lack of knowledge, people somehow extrapolate that to how he plays regularly against good defenses. Believe it or not, he's played some strong defenses over his three seasons and put up godly numbers in doing so. Some of those were still L's on his record because the defenses gave up 40+ so consistently.
      I love Fields, but once the Bears speak with Caleb's teammates over the past decade, there is no chance he doesn't go #1 after what the league is experiencing at the expense of Mahomes. And the only comps you hear about Caleb are...yeah. He's just too similar. Perhaps he won't hit that ceiling but the floor on this kid is the highest I've seen since Andrew Luck. Williams stats are padded because the PAC 12 is focused on Offense.

      Very true. He’s good. But is he generational ? His size does not speak to generational, and his maturity seems off to become a good leader. He tries to play hero ball every play, and I think in the NFL that habit which seems deeply ingrained will get him in trouble more times than he can bail himself out. My gut says Bears stick with Justin and trade the pick. I think their plan at the combine is going to be more about which teams are desiring to get the #1 pick, get those dialogues going, and get an idea on number of picks they will have so they can prepare for the draft. I think after the combine, the national media will become much less certain about the Bears going Caleb as #1. There could be a surprise team they trade with, who does not choose Caleb #1 at the draft.

    Curious your opinion on the Bears QB plan/options at this point? I see so many commenters on WGC (for ex) think that the decision isn't an evolving one with many potential options for Poles, and knee jerk the "risk a toxic situation" answer to the Bears keeping JF AND drafting a QB (esp if in fact there is no trade mkt for JF). Isn't this the strategy GB has been using forever...competition at QB? Is that "toxic situation" claim overrated? It would also provide an avenue to protect a rookie QB for a yr if needed (PPL like Jim Miller often say that's always best case scenario). If a rookie has a problem w competition, isn't that a red flag? The chance to trade back a couple spots even and still get a QB and draft capital (which Poles has a knack @ turning into proven NFL players like Moore and now Allen for ex) must be so tempting. PPL cite "no reports Bears shopping #1 pick" as if it means something...this year w the JF situation isn't comparable to last yr @ this time. There's no need to "shop" a #1 pick when you are signaling a plan to try and trade JFs...esp if that plan was only to increase what someone might offer for that pick. No team calling the Bears abt it wants that known for obvious reasons. I just feel like Poles seems logical and not emotionally tied to any potential draftee or acquisition. If he put the value so high nobody would meet it on JF, wasn't he already kind of playing a game there? And if nobody wanted him, JF would be in his best possible chance to show what he can do by still being in CHI...not the other way around. And it seems the Bears have little to lose by keeping him IF in fact nobody offered anything significant for him yet anyway...good option to start if rookie not ready (likely) and one of the best backup options in the league if the rookie is somehow ready to go. Unless this "toxicity" in the locker room is almost a sure thing, I don't see how there isn't more advantage in keeping JF rostered as a Bear for a year than trading him for a bag of balls or cutting him. Am I wrong? I tend to believe the old saying, "worry is just interest on a debt you might not have"...and worrying abt drafting CW or another rookie QB while keeping JF could cause a problem (given the current situation which I know is always evolving) is exactly that...a problem they easily might not have with benefits to good to ignore. Thanks!
