Great video, I however would note that a classically style ivory dinner jacket would be a more appropriate and formal alternative to a smoking jacket or black swatch jacket Atleast here in warmer climates.
Really, a velvet dinner jacket in general would be a better alternative since a smoking jacket is a little too casual. The one instance where that might work, along with the velvet slippers is if you are hosting a dinner/event at your home.
Dear Mr. Allison, i only recently discovered your channel, and I'm astonished that it doesn't have more subscribers, your work is paramount and very inspiring. I have to say thank you for providing a platform for people with these kind of interests, my whole life I loved male elegance, and tried to practice it to the best of my possibilities; but is nice to know you are not alone and having a place to get information and entertainment is gold.
Looking at your channel skyrocket in the next future will be a pleasure.
Cheers from Italy
Alessandro
That was a cool trick you did showing the different colors for the smoking jacket
The color changing trick was so subtle and neat 😋
Superb taste and style Kirby. I really love the jacket, and the slippers are spectacular. Definitely a must with Sovereign Grade Silk Socks. Bravo🙏
Love the black tie videos, keep em coming kirby.
Kirby you represent a breath of fresh air in an otherwise seemingly undignified time in our world. Thank you.
Interesting alternatives, thx for these---I used to have a vintage wine-colored velvet smoking jacket with a wine-colored satin lapel and tasseled sash rather than buttons (well, there was a concealed button to keep the jacket attached if the sash came undone). I even like some other flashy black tie variations when they're well done, even if I personally wouldn't wear it. I adore classic black tie and I enjoy wearing it, but it's fun to see folks do different things as well. I recently went to a black tie event where a man looked great in a black-damask tux and black tux shirt --- he seemed to have the personality to pull it off.
I love that green dinner jacket. That style is mint
Love that Black watch dinner jacket! So subtle in certain lighting
Great insight as always Mr Allison. Quick question, is it acceptable for the shoes to be lighter than the pants? Won't that bring attention to the feet?
Your presentation is very nice for a casual black tie attire.
Loved the editing trick on the smoking jacket changing colors!
Midnight blue dinner jacket and trousers. Perfect colour in a darker location.
Love the tuxedo videos. Please make more. Maybe dinner jackets next?
Neat color transition on the smoking jacket!
You should play a Villain roll in James Bond “ No Time to Look Better “ 😁😁🤣🤣
Badass! I've never seen shoes like that. Classy!
The velvet smoking jacket is sublime.
amazing video as always.
As always an amazing video, I would like to ask you about a video showing how n what to wear with the Spencer jacket thank you so much.
You got great style!!!
Well said!
Kirby, I have to say those opera pumps and slippers are spectacular. Question, what polish of yours would you recommend. I just purchased a pair of Ana Martin opera pumps and needed to buy some polish.
Since I'm in the Dallas area, maybe you can give a list of ideas for black-tie events? Maybe an idea for a new video?
With a midnight blue dinner jacket with tartan trousers, should the shoes be smart like brogues or loafers acceptable? First black tie event coming up !
Kirby, what would do suggest for Black Tie Optional?
Though I have never gone to a black tie event I wish to but if someone is wearing a tux for the first time invest in a black one its simple and elegant
Dark navy monogrammed bespoke foster and sons slippers, have the 2nd best match after the leather black opera pumps.
Hey, I'd like to ask you a question. I am invited to a summer wedding in Spain. I have a off-white linen dinner jacket. Can I wear black linen trousers to it? I am worried that both linen pieces would create an overall dishevelled look (due to creasing). If wool trousers are better, is it still a good option during high summer? Cheers!
I might do the opera bow tie shoes if they werent pre tied
Hey Kirby, what’s the mill/cloth merchant where your Blackwatch jacket came from?
What style wedding band do you wear? I really like the look but am unsure the name of the style or type of ring.
Kirby, you've talked about using satin laces on formal footwear in previous videos. I was surprised to find you do not sell them on your website, any plans to offer them in the future? Are there any you recommend that I get?
Thank you
Fort Belvedere
Hi Kirby Allison, I think the smoking jacket that you got there is the most beautifull one i've seen on a living man thus far. I wish I had one of my own
I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I do not usually wear suits in everyday living but I do wear my tuxedo almost every night at home. simply because it is the best fitting set of clothing that I have. add to this that I am working my way towards being a tailor, drafting my first patterns (so far: shirts and vests, pantalon in the making as we speak) I'd wish for my cummerbund to be replaced by a vest with a deep cut (likely a horseshoe-shape).
The trousers and the jacket of my tuxedo are in matching fabrics but they are vintage, making it impossible to get the vest in the exact same fabrics as the jacket and trousers. would you say it is acceptable to have an "odd" vest (black and deep cut but not the exact same fabric as the rest) when wearing a tuxedo or should I stick to the cummerbund for as long as I cannot afford to make a three-piece tuxedo that are all cut from the same fabric? I really prefer the combination of a vest and suspenders before anything else but having an odd vest on a tuxedo might be too casual.
Thanks in advance!
Is a video on white tie alternatives next? Here’s hoping!
02:20 - 'It's been let out once or twice'. I let myself go after marriage, too....
As for velvet slipper, I picked up my first pair lately, dark navy New & Lingwood (never worn!) on eBay and while I'm going all Mr Rogers 'indoor shoes' with them, I might take the plunge with black tie... but then I'm pretty wed to the pumps/court shoes look.
Let the black tie events commence! It's been too long...
Funny you released this video today! Getting ready for my wedding on the 12th of this month. Black Tux all the way. I even proposed a few years ago in Tails!
Don't do it! You've been warned.
Kirby I've watched 100s hours your videos please can you make another video with Eddie and Edward at Davidoff they are my favourite because the conversation is comforting Thank you
Sir plz make a video on tartan dinner jacket
Kirby could play Bond, the way that tuxedo looks on him!
Where are the studs from?
I love ur socks
I don't know, you can break ONE rule, if you want to have a variation jacket great, if you want to wear slippers ok, but when you start combing and adding that's when eyebrows begin to raise.
The smoking jacket is beautiful by the way.
Is it socially acceptable to wear a waistcoat and pocket watch with a black tie suit instead of a cumberbumb around the waist, I'm asking for I have a love for pocket watches and I'm wondering if it will suit
You should do “ Black-tie with flip flops” 👡
My wife also wears pumps like that
7:11 what are gym colours?
“Gem” colors. Emerald. Ruby. Sapphire. 💎 👍🏾
Why are so many suit makers making notch lapel Tuxedos? I have even seen President's, Governor etc wearing notch lapel Tuxedos. Is the peak and shaw lapel rule still a rule?
I still prefer the traditional black tie look.
I can't tell the future, but it seems that as long as I live, I will never be invited to a black tie event. How can I change that?
У New & Lingwood есть потрясающие смокинги винного цвета
What's wrong with lace up shoes?
I would say that there is not much wrong with lace up shoes for a tuxedo apart from that laces in general are a practical feature of the shoe and they break up the shape of the shoes a bit by having the laces as horizontal bars over the shoes. Skipping these features will make it look like you are wearing the shoes for the occasion and not just the shoes you wear on a daily basis.
As long as the shoes are black, highly shined and have no perforations: the shoes should be appropriate for evening-attire. The more "features" (i.e. laces) you remove from the shoe, the more elegant they will be.
It should also be more difficult to get a functional fit of you don't have laces, showing the other guests that you went "the extra mile" for this occasion.
@@j0naybladeUnderstood. Exceptionally explained sir. Thank you!
Kirby your lapel is curling, what's with that?
First.
To each his own. Personally, I’m not a fan of slippers nor bow tie pumps. To me they look dainty and feminine. I don’t like comer buns either. I prefer a waistcoat (vest) or a double breasted jacket.
I suppose mixing it up is ok for black tie.. Not Me Tho ( God forbid!) still, let's at least keep white tie uniform, could we?
I hate tuxedos shoes...yes I detest them. Kind remind me of toilet plastic shoes. Oh I'm very open minded guy. All in all Kirby you're top and very knowledgeable guy and decent human being. Oh yes I did my like. 🙏🏼
it is not a plaid, it is a tartan due to it beeing registered in the scottish tartan registry. plaids are always american checks
IMHO these dandy-ish variations can be acceptable only in one's private domains and parties but lean towards a potpourri if everyone is left to their own devices. Apart from an ivory off white dinner jacket for afternoon cocktails which is totally acceptable and elegant these variations you present only send mixed messages from you(????) when you had it right the first time. Witness the mongrel displays of black tie attire at any celebrity event nowadays and hope that you do not approve nor indulge...!
The video starts off by saying there is nothing more formal than a Black Tie Tuxedo. Technically, isn't Black Tie a step down in formality compared to White Tie? At State Dinners, the president and all the men are wearing White Tie. At the famous Austrian opera house in Vienna, wearing Black Tie rather than White Tie I would have to think you would stand out, but not in a way you would want to. All other men would be wearing white tie. If you were to go to a formal event in Great Britain sponsored by the Royal Family, wearing Black Tie, it would probably be seen as an insult to the Queen.
I believe I read that the Black Tie Tuxedo came about in England when the nobility wanted something a little less formal than White Tie and especially wanted something without the hassle of tails which is mandatory in White Tie but not common in Black Tie. Later, men wanted something a little less formal than Black Tie for events that were just for men and in a lounge setting. It was called a lounge suit and quickly became common in the business environment in the early 1900's as it is still today and is now known as the modern business suit. The lounge suit/business suit brought about the popularity of the neck tie replacing ascots, poof ties (I think that is what they are called) and bow ties. Before the Lounge Suit took over as the dominant business attire, business mean wore suits with much longer jackets (I think called Frock Jackets) that would go down to the thighs or even the knees, with a vest that generally did not match the jacket in color, most likely a pocket watch and chain on the suit and the shirt would have a stiff collar that was not meant to be folded like modern dress shirts. Neckwear would most likely be ascots, bow ties or poof ties. Google a picture of John D. Rockerfeller to see someone wearing such business attire. Or watch episodes of Deadwood and the main character, Seth Bullock, often wears such business attire after being elected sheriff.
Dude come on, those shoes, really? No
So this is basically a 180 on the absolutistic views in that previous video... Just make up your own rules, black tie doesn't exist. I'm especially nauseous about you complaining about brogue shoes in the past and now suggesting to wear *slippers* with a tramp stamp printed on them.
The socks and shoes are a no. Or like you say, need to be brave as they’re both just too feminine. It’s pretty much what my mum was wearing on a daily basis 20 years ago 😂
Love men in sheers socks
@@gabrieleamornim960 Each to their own. Far too feminine for most guys regardless of how secure they are with their sexuality 😂
I WOULD LOVE TO USE TUXEDO 227+550 TIMES. DINNERJACKET 994+299 TIMES
