Michael Biehn: Beyond the Guns & Glory

- This is the career story of Michael Biehn. Over many years, the actor played numerous roles, but he is primarily remembered for his collaborations with director James Cameron in films like "The Terminator", "Aliens", and "The Abyss", as well as his villainous role as Ringo in the cult western "Tombstone". While the subjunctive mood doesn't exist, Biehn had opportunities to further his career. However, a series of poor decisions and unfortunate circumstances prevented him from appearing in films like "The Usual Suspects", "Alien 3", and "Avatar".

Michael Biehn deserved the same success as Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. He has really proven himself to be great leading man and a great villain
Well Hamill spent 30 years in limbo (aside from some great animated voicing) but understand what you mean. He deserved much better.
Deserved so much better
Mark Hamil was a Z lister until they dug him up for those crappy new star wars movies.
@@hen5555 He deserved better but is probably the most type cast actor ever
@@hen5555 He still is, the only thing he's done worthy of note, beyond Star Wars, has been as the voice of the Joker. And perhaps the role that landed him the Joker: The trickster in the 90s Flash (and as an alternate older version in the CW Flash series).
Now Mark is still king of the nerds, though as a cult phenomenon (due to star wars).
He's truly an underrated actor in the sci-fi genre
AND the Western genre! He was awesome as Johnny Ringo in Tombstone. ❤
Underrated ? He's been in a few of the best Sci-Fi and western movies of all time
I was ready to say that.
The Abyss. He was edited out of Terminator 2. But, he was there for a moment. Hey, check his work in Planet Terror. Worth every ounce of salt a fat man eats every day!
Honestly the scenes of him and Sarah in T2 are kinda weird when you do watch them. He didn't really act like the original Kyle. I'm kinda glad they took them out, as much as I love him.
@@FrancoSchwarzenferrigno As good as James Cameron is, I doubt he had many "real" or "life experience based" interactions" with women. T2 was a dream sequence, but the George Lucas and James Cameron types out there were, I doubt, the prom Kings of their senior year. That's why--I can confirm this--the interactions with male and female characters appear awkward.
Bummer to be sure.
Dude.. that scene in The Rock (THAT scene) honestly made me tear up. Him and Ed Harris sold the hell out of that scene.
I cannot give that order!
The only scene I remember from that film is his "foreign and domestic" monologue.
Have you ever heard Ed Harris talk about nearly drowning after filming that breathable liquid scene in "The Abyss"? It's harrowing stuff and Harris gets pretty real about how he had a brief breakdown following the incident. He's a real actor and I don't think a fan of James Cameron.
What a legend. Hicks and Kyle Reece, two iconic characters.
don't forget Johnny Ringo! And he was in Navy Seals with Charlie Sheen
@@dan6822 those are great including Ringo in Tombstone! and if you like Video Games he's the voice of Rex Colt in Far Cry Blood Dragon!
he played a navy seal in the movie "The Rock" starring nicolas cage and sean connery
Hicks and Reese were written to be subdued and not to overpower the female action lead, and while he was good, those roles aren’t as memorable as Arnold Sarah Connor, Ripley or Bill Paxton.
Don’t get me wrong, he is important in three of the best movies ever.
But John Ringo was ever bit as memorable as anyone in tombstone and that is saying a heck of a lot.
He is an off the wall character actor cursed with leading man looks. Compare him with Eastwood or Timothy Oliphant and they are just different as leading men.
throw in Johnny Ringo, and you have a trifecta of nearly perfect movies to be proud of.
This guy always played interesting characters. Underrated actor for sure!
he looks like bill burr if he had hair and some balls
how he played depends on director of the movie
Just saw him in a Tombstone scene and thought, "Damn, who is that guy? What a cool looking dude." Didn't realize he was the guy from Terminator.
yep, it's Kyle Reese in Western times.
Great movie...Great all around cast.
he getting terminated by terminators and drunkard huckleberries.
You only saw one scene from Tombstone? Not the whole movie??? Its one of the best westerns ever made. I guess youve never seen Aliens either. Youre insulting us real fans.
@@thomasstudstrup5028 unfortunately, both Tombstone and the Alien series escaped me. Might have to give this one a go sometime, but I think I'll still skip the Alien series, since I'm not a fan of creepy stuff, and I've already seen Species. 😉
Appreciate what he did during covid. Respect.
A mate of mine was selling memorabilia. He couldn’t believe his luck when Biehn came over to him, shook his hand, and asked him how he was doing. When he regained the power of speech, he took a bow in Biehn’s honour.
Kyle Reese is easily my favourite movie hero. I saw "The Terminator" when I was Eight (the Eighties were wild for a kid), and I'm sure it's had a foundational effect on my view of being a human, especially a man. Reese came through time for Sarah, and that has always struck me as something so beautifully noble and romantic. I love a tragic hero, and Kyle Reese is the best of them. Hicks rules too obviously. Micheal Biehn helped shape a lot of childhoods.
Great video, thanks!
Everyone remembers Ripley saving Newt, but we can't ignore the fact that it was Hicks, who most certainly saved Ripley, and in turn saved Newt, by giving Ripley the crash course in handling heavy weapons. Hicks also gave the tracker watch to Ripley, which she gives to Newt and is able to track her till the alien nest, with Newt's terrified screams leading Ripley the rest of the way.
Long live Hicks amd thank you Mr. Michael Biehn!
Love and respect from India!
I always really loved Michael Biehn's work. Loved him in Terminator, Aliens and Tombstone. I feel he *just missed out on major stardom and more leading roles. But hey, a lot of struggling actors (and they are legion!) would kill to have the career Michael has had.
Truly an underrated actor who deserves more credit to his name. The Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss are some of mt favorite films and this is partially what made 'em so great.
He was awesome in Tombstone!
@@gregorykiernan7849 and also in 'Cherry Falls' and 'The Art of War.'
Right those two are weird roles, and important but thanksless role.
He is the masculine humble male hero who must not outshine the iconic female action lead.
But also isn’t a helpless “damsel in distress” either.
Hard line to walk but darn subtle.
One of the heroes of my childhood, thank you, Mr. Biehn!
Niel Blamkampf would have absolutely killed it with Aliens. He really should have gotten his shot!
Amen to that brother 👍 couldn’t agree more 🤷♂️
Just a heads up, his name is spelled Neill Blomkamp. Don't mean to be rude or annoying, just a correction.
Yep
I was passed off when they cancelled the film to make Alien Covenant. I really wanted to see his return the movie. Him and Sigourney
Man how heartbreaking to watch Fox tear down that idea
Biehn is indeed underrated.
Let's not forget his role as Micheal McNeil in C&C - Tiberian Sun...together with James 'Solomon' Earl Jones.
Terminator, Tombstone and Tiberian Sun. I loved all that and for the longest I didn't even realize it was him.
Michael Biehn is great, always appreciated seeing him in a film and he killed it in Terminator and Aliens. Hell, Navy Seals was a fun flick too!
He's an incredibly talented and extremely under-rated actor.
Underrated but absolutely legendary
He's my favourite actor hands down. Just because he wasn't exactly a household name doesn't mean he didn't have a great career.
As far as I'm concerned, he wasn't wrong to demand compensation for Aliens 3.
Saw an interview with Biehn where he talks about his previous severe alcoholism. And he says he was very hard to deal with for coulleges and family for many years.
Its too bad, because yes, his prime time should/could have been the 90s (just like van Damme). However, the man has nothing to prove.
We all know hes a fantastic actor, and he despite his problems and setbacks, he has some well respected iconic characters in iconic movies.
And not many actors can say this. Im glad his over his alcoholism, and if hes happy im happy.
To this day, Kyle Reese is one of the best screen heroes to come out of Hollywood. A genuinely brave showing of masculinity that we rarely see nowadays in today’s movies
I think he wasnt masculine looking enough to really cement himself as a Hollywood hero. Small, slight, narrow face. Not square enough for the "all-american" look, and yet not round and "cute" enough for the indy/quirky roles (that you might consider a more "feminine" male hero) either
He's lovely. I met him years ago. His queue was the longest as he loves interacting with fans.
The first time I saw The Terminator in 1980s, I was blown away by Michael Biehn's performance. Even the name Michael Biehn shown in the opening credits using that wonderful font will never be erased from my memory. ❤👍
He is one of my Fave! A great actor!
i think it's fair to say Biehn will be far more remembered for all the good stuff (The Terminator, ALIENS, The Abyss, Tombstone, The ROCK and The Mandalorian) he did then any of failed projects most of which i had never even heard of anyways. he may not be a household name but he's definitely an icon.
I got a bit of a crush on him after Terminator and for a few years he became my favourite actor and even my husband's too!! We used to both watch out for films with him and were sad to see them fewer and further between!! I have to admit that in more recent years I'm so impressed with what he has made of his life AND of the deep, mature and accepting man he has become!! Listening to him talk about his life is truly fascinating, especially as told in his indomitable, personable style!!
I saw him in person @ Crypticon a decade back. he is a really cool, very normal guy. He expressed disappointment with the decision the writers made to kill off many of the heroes characters after aliens. It's rare seeing this much love that an actor puts into the world created by the story. I admire that.
Wow, didn't know about the Alien 5 plans. That would have been epic to see Biehn return as Hicks
Maaaan, the movie was allmost ready to start shooting! There is tons of material online (the short script, concept art, etc),it would be really awesome if it got to the final stage...
But Sir.Rodley Scott had to interfere,he shut it down by the studio ncs je wanted Covenant to ne tje only sequel in the franchise!
Honestly it's what we have all been waiting for . ... perhaps he can take solace in the fact that every alien Sequel after aliens have been flops.
He wouldn't return he dies in alien 3
@@frozenf5682they were going to erase every movie after Aliens
@@oreochips21 ohh...i didn't know that but it would be nice i like Hicks
always love seeing Michael on screen. still pissed about Alien 5. I think it would have been amazing.
Thank you for this. Biggest "that guy" in the history of cinema. Deserves better.
Regardless of how his career flew, Biehn is still one cool guy. I grew up with his biggest films and ive seen him in interviews too, and he has just a cool way about him. Ill watch him in anything myself 🤷♂️
Aliens, Terminater, and Tombstone, are all in my top ten favorite movies, and he was lead acting in each. Biehn was a massively underrated actor.
"is".
We love Michael Biehn, great underrated actor.
It was a pleasure meeting him at a signing. He was very nice and took time to talk after getting an autograph. I would love to see him in more projects.
My sons and I met Mr. Beihn at a convention where he talked with us for a long time. He was happy to answer our questions and was just all around a very friendly, cool guy. He told us a lot about his role as Johnny Ringo in Tombstone and how he trained for it. It was great. When we went to get an autographed pic, we couldn't decide what we wanted him to write. So he suggested, "Stay Frosty". Yeah, that was the one, lol.
Michael biehn should be a movie star like tom Cruise or Harrison Ford.
He surely could be!
He's a fantastic underrated actor
That's who Mr. Micheal (motherfckn bad ass) biehn is
40 years later, Aliens and Terminator alongside with movies like Predator and the first Alien, still hold up as the best action sci-fi ever made..
Excellent review! I have always felt he was a major key to the success of Terminator and Aliens
Michael Biehn fan always. Even with the bombs even just for his roles in Terminator, Aliens, and especially ICONIC Tombstone. He will always be a great actor to me.
Funny story about The Terminator: Biehn almost didnt get the role. He was playing on stage prior to the casting. It was The Cat On The Hot Tin Roof. He talked in a heavy southern accent, since the role asked for that.
But Cameron wanted Reese to have a "neutral" american accent. After Biehn noticed that he was still talking in the southern tongue, he got rid of it real quick and said that it was just for his role in a play.
He read his lines again and got the job.
First terminator, first firefight in disco is still one of the best action scenes i have ever seen💪
He's such an icon, beautiful and talented since day 1
He should have been way bigger always liked Biehn in movies
Underrated actor, who gave an amazing performance in The Divide, which is in turn, sadly, an underrated movie.
Bein and Kilmer were Tombstone. They both made that movie epic and amazing.
Great actor, who always brings tremendous charism and intensity to any role.
I met him and spoke at length about his role as Johnny Ringo. I think he liked talking about a role that wasn't science fiction...
Cool
Michael Biehn is a kind of ''Every man'' and that's why he's much loved.
My friends slowly getting tired of me, bc always when we talk about movies and stuff I come up with Michael Biehn😂
(We are all 16- 18, idk how I even found out about this incredible actor😂😅)
He's one of my favorite actors, and I wish he was in more movies/shows. He's so great!
The guys in aliens. The abyss. The terminator. The guys a fkn classic movie legend
great actor , underrated for sure
Fun fact in Tombstone he and a Val learned gun tricks WELL. If I remember correctly Biehn created a move that hadn't been used even in competition. The horizontal spin I think. In the two guns one for each of you scene if you watch Val spins each gun in opposite directions slyly indicating his hand eye coordinaton is spot on still.
He did not personally fail. Just Underrated.
I always wondered why he wasn't a huge star ⭐
I was born in 1975 and ever since I saw him in the original Terminator I was a huge fan. Anytime I saw him I wanted to see the movie, anytime I saw a movie and he showed up I was always happy. He was extremely good-looking, charming and just had that cool factor. He should have been a huge star! That's what I always thought and to this day I'm a huge fan.
12:17 Such an awesome scene with Biehn playing Corporal Hicks. I first saw this circa 1987 age 11 and I was sh*tting bricks...it felt like Hicks stopped to turn around to me and to ask if I was ok?
K2 was his best roll for me
The Fan gets a lot of criticism, but while it's not perfect Biehn's performance is beyond perfection!
Short answer: a f%cking legend.
Still an absolute LEGEND . Represents an era. Iconic unforgettable actor.
After Terminator Michael Biehn's brilliance was wasted.
T1 and aliens2, if these 2 films are your only films, I'll take it all day everyday. When action films gave me joy and thrill watching these films. Salute to a wonderful actor. Mabuhay!
Michael is a good actor and a favorite in Alien films, Terminator and Tombstone among many more.
Damn, goes to show you how important it is to have a good team. It’s easy to make creative choices that take you down the wrong path. He should have been much bigger
I read that Jim originally wanted Biehn for the roll of Cal Hockley in Titanic but gave it to Billy Zane instead. It would've been interesting to see Michael Biehn in Titanic. I also read that in 2008, Michael had a stroke. Thank God he's still with us and got off of the booze.
One of the most underrated actors of all time. The Abyss should of been mentioned with the intro along with Tombstone. He is was a great actor hands down!
Also worth mentioning his scene was cut out of Terminator 2. It's a shame. Always thought he was a great actor, super intense characters
If they'd made 20 more action films with Michael Biehn as a protagonist, I've have pay money to see every one of them in the theatres. Despite its flaws, I liked The Rock chiefly because he was in it.
I've met that man 3 times in my life. He gave me 2 autographs for the Terminator and Aliens. I also gave him an outline for an AVP script that he wanted to read (Mostly because he wanted to know what was going to happen to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lance Henriksen, and Bill Paxton in that movie). It was nice to see him all those times, and I wanted him to autograph my action figures of him...IF I ever saw him again.
Wow, that's so cool! Do you still have those autographs?
The Divide was an AMAZING film. Post apocalyptic horror.
Michael bien and bill Paxton were in so many films together they were great friends 🤜🤛
It's crazy to think that Mike has played more villains than Arnie. And he'd played at least two villains prior to playing Kyle Reese, the ultimate hero!
8:33 In Mike's own words, "F*** 'Alien 3'."
Michael Biehn is a really nice guy. I've met him twice and he was great both times. The second time I met him, his wife was at the convention, and she was super nice.
loved him in t1. how he explained to sarah they will not stop until your dead. that's very scary when you give it some thought.
Worked with him and found him really calm and easy going
😎🤙
Nice guy. Saw him talk at Detroit comic con last May. He did a huge monolog, with no notes, that was cut from Tombstone. He got into character, you could hear a pin drop by the end.
The Fan was an awesome movie. Miss the films of the 80's.
Reece and Hicks, two of my fav 80s hero's.
I noticed him for the first time opposite Wesley Snipes in The Art of War. The greatest gunplay scene that gave birth to every modern gun fight after that.
He was in the movie the rock for a short section and was still solid. Michael is the man
I love his work in Terminator, Aliens, & Navy Seals. I think he would have been good in Avatar. btw thanks posting I enjoyed watching this
Thanks for watching, Adam!
He was great as a leading man. But he was equally great as a villain in Tombstone and The Abyss
How gorgeous was this dude💕😎
Michael Biehn is one of those underrated actors who always delivered a stellar performance in several movies that are immortalized in pop culture.
He also seems like a great guy. I recommend watching his interview on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast. He revealed that he had a stroke and terrible bouts with alcohol.
Great content in this video. You all have earned yourself a subscriber. I look forward to what else is in store. ✌
I completely agree. When I remember Abyss, for example, I can't imagine it without Biehn performance.
Thanks for subscribing!!! We have ready a content plan until the end of the year and even a bit more ;) So we really hope you'll enjoy the following works. Sometimes it will be about someone you like, sometimes not, but all these acotors will evoke nostalgy for sure!
He is number one on my list of extremely under rated actors! I rate him along with actors like Sam Neil that just dont get the respect and roles that they should!!
Don't forget K2, The Lords of Discipline and there is another movie where his name or Alter-ego is Edy Kaye, unless the Latter is already on this list. Underrated actor. The man did have a stroke in 2008.
Him and Claude Van Damme Blew It.

You got that crappy commercialized, generic buzzfeed voice..
Yikes thats a garbage accent to use.....
Glad to see him sober and active. Still a lot of art left to do and look forward to whatever he's up to next.
Literally in all the films I watched growing up:
Terminator
Aliens
The Abyss
Tombstone
The Rock
I love Michael Biehn❤ Enjoyed characters he has played.
Undoubtedly, an excellent compilation and summary. I would have liked to have watched it even longer and in more detail. Congratulations.
I miss to watch your craft Mr. Biehn. Hope you're well and also I hope that you can come back to wonderful characters. 🤩🤩
TERMINATOR not only put Arnold on the map, but Michael Biehn snd Linda Hamilton too!!!!!🤗🤗🤗
He’s such a Great Actor!!!!!
Lovely guy, a gret character in everything's he's done
He was great in the Abyss.
Easily one of my favorite actors of all time. So fucking underrated but I know us loyal fans love him.
Criminally underrated. I knew he fell off when I saw him star in a Hong Kong action film. He said that it was the most terrible experience of his life because HK film makers shoot quick and cheap and don’t make plans. Here’s a story, “ Well, they didn’t have catering. They would run to a restaurant and get you cheap noodles. I asked for coffee and my assistant actually got me a can of grounds Folgers coffee.” He snapped and threw the tin can at the assistant. The movie is called, “Dragon Squad.” (2005)
I saw Timebomb recently and absolutely loved it. It's a smaller-scale "Bourne Identity" a full decade before it was made. however,, despite a smaller budget, it still delivers on the action. Plenty of fight scenes, car chases and gun shootouts. Beihn does a lot of his own stunts too.
Corp Dwyane Hicks is one of tne most believable and convincing characters in movie history. I always wanted to be like him as a kid.
