- The Public Broadcasting Service is marking fifty years of broadcasting, during which the consortium of public TV stations has not only served up award-winning dramas, documentaries and children's programming, but also opened an underserved broadcast market to the outside world. Correspondent Martha Teichner looks at how PBS has changed the lives of viewers and filmmakers in its first half-century, and the fundraising drives that are critical to its survival.

We grew up without cable for a while and while everyone else spent their after school time watching Nickelodeon I was watching Arthur, Dragon Tales, Clifford, Wishbone, Zoom, and Reading Rainbow on PBS. Can't believe PBS is 50!
I grew up on PBS with Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Sesame Street, and Reading Rainbow. These programs were a vital and positive part of my childhood. Happy 50th PBS!
I agree. Mr Rogers taught civics How to be in a community be a neighbor, and care
Hey...do you remember the electric company, zoom, and 321 contact?
@@antoniodiego9357 I do! Love PBS!
Don't forget Barney and Friends
@@antoniodiego9357 I So do! SS,TEC,and MRN were my educational trio. The 70s had great stuff,PBS wise.
I tell ya that Ken Burns kid is going places.
We need more of the broadcasting systems like PBS that is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and have committed only to the public interest. Congrats on 50th anniversary!!
Pbs newshour is NOT nonpartisan. They lean very strongly towards the democratic party and it's agenda.
@@lynngilliss7108 do you say that because they don’t kowtow to trump?
@@lynngilliss7108 you fools say that about every news source that isn’t crazy right wing. I guess BBC favors the democrats too?
@@justinbowen2509 Of course that’s why lol 😆 Could also be saying that, because of agent orange’s remarks at News Hour’s WH journalist. As for most reporters it jumps down their throats for asking questions about its statements. Unfortunately for Yamish (?) she did just that! Quoted its remarks/statement from earlier that day, and asked her question. Ao told her in the normal condescendingly loud voice, “That was a nasty question! How could you even ask that? “. It was appalling! Other journalists actually had shocked looks on their faces.
Lynn Gilliss why don’t you crawl back to newsmax or oann?
I'm proud to say that I grew up on The Street and hung out in The Neighborhood.
❤️❤️❤️ Yes!!!
Love PBS, especially Frontline and Ken Burns docs!
PBS changed my life too. Growing up as a poor young black girl on the South Side of Chicago, PBS allowed me to see beyond my neighborhood... As a child, after school, I would run to the TV to watch PBS kids' show called Liberty Kids. I loved that show and supported my love for history
Loved that theme song!
Liberty kids haha. That takes me back
@@ambercherise2391 the singers of that show's theme song were Aaron Carter and Kayla, two of the best singers of the early 2000's.
@@CameronBW2000 I Remember when I was young, I used to watch, where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? and where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? these two what started the Carmen Franchise, before the Animated Series Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego (that has the Great and Legendary Actress Rita Moreno doing the Voice Acting of Carmen), and the Netflix Animated Series Carmen Sandiego (that Has Gina Rodriquez doing the voice acting of Carmen).
In 1980 I was blown away when I watched "Cosmos" with Carl Sagan. PBS provides such an extraordinary service to viewers.
So good! My sister got the book for Christmas that year. A thrilling gift!
I am 52 with 30 years in the Culinary field as a direct result of PBS, Julia Childs and Jacque Pepin! I was fortunate to thank Chef Pepin in person.
pbs is 52, too! at least, nowadays. you're 53/54 nowadays, so a bit older than pbs.
Don't know life without it!! Happy birthday PBS!!
Omg I'm 64 i remember watching it as i grew up
I still watch it
I love the story with Ken burns he bring it to life the real story
Thank you for 50 plus more yrs
PBS is something I think many of us take for granted. As a kid, I L💓ved Sesame Street, 3-2-1 contact & Reading Rainbow to name a few. Shows that helped give kids a good foundation in their early years.
i cant say enough good things about pbs. such good stuff. i love watching the nature shows. my old cat hunter would sit down and watch nature with me anytime bears would be on the screen. and for that im thankful for pbs helping make my cat and myself entertained and educated.
I am Swiss - and I love CBS S M.
My swiss Parents somehow managed to make me when they worked overseas in Ohio. We moved back to Switzerland when I was 5/6.
Every Sunday morning I watched it. One of my first childhood memorys. 😢
i love PBS!! I learned my english, history, geography, science and empathy on PBS ❤️
Well said!
Well deserved mention to PBS... Here in Louisiana is one of the most watch channels. Thanks for video. Happy Birthday #50!
That's strange. I do not know anyone who watches PBS. Sevare a multimillionaire.

Defunding PBS has got to be one of the weakest things politicians could do.
So is defunding law enforcement.
@@hiddenpcmaster Defunding the police is the wrong messaging. Clearly, you bit. Reforming the police? Do you see any need there?

Thank you PBS for all that you have given these past 50 years! Still watching...
I learned how to cook thanks to PBS, My family and I will always be grateful
PBS and NPR are public broadcasting gold standards in this country. We need them, forever and more important than ever, right now.
Ain't that the truth?
I watch you EVERYDAY, PBS 🤓. Thank you for all the intelligent and entertaining shows 🙏! Here's to at least 50 more years of great programming 🌺🍾👏
PBS is proof there is good in the world.
I love PBS! Even my Mom and Dad did when they were alive. Happy 50 Years PBS
I’m 51. I didn’t know I am older than PBS.
The predecessor to PBS was NET (National Education Television).
And viewers like you. Thank you.
PBS IS A BLESSED GODSEND !
Thank You CBS
For this PBS Birthday
I grew up watching PBS back in 1972 and My children too
And still am watching
With my trusty tv antenna I have PBS, PBS kids, PBS world and PBS create. I love their programming!
PBS San Francisco was what I remember when I was a toddler
PBS is the very best of American TV. I am 60, and remember when Sesame Street began and I watched with my little sister. I loved the children’s show Zoom, from WGBH Boston. I watched so many shows over the years: This Old House; Victory Garden; Masterpiece Theatre; Inspector Morse; Frontline; Nova. I can even recall them all now, they were so numerous. The very best!!!
Half of my very good education I easily attribute to PBS.
PBS and NPR - life changing. I'm a sustainer!
PBS was the pre cursor ( to me) to the Internet...for me it was like an education channel for everyone!! You could see people from all over the world!!!...I remember climbing on top of the house and turning the TV antenna to pick up the channel!!:)..And turning it back when my Mom and Dad came home from work....yeah I know..I can hear the questions.." What's a TV antenna???"....😊
This is PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service at 50 Years on Television. Congratulations for broadcasts that are educational and exploring.
I lived off of WHYY and WNJS out of Camden, NJ as a child in Delaware. I owe a lot to PBS for all I've learned and my that's for knowledge and have recently started donating.
I discovered PBS, back when it was NET, in 1969. I spent many educational and entertaining (and often both at once) hours watching the PBS stations available in New York, Philadelphia, and Miami. I--we *all*--owe them a lot.
I too grew up on PBS. Great memories as a child watching Mr Rogers Neighborhood , Sesame Street, and other shows I can;t remember at the moment. Happy 50th PBS
LUV, LUV, LUV PBS!!!! I started watching when I didn't have cable. Learned more from PBS than I ever learned in a classroom.🥰🥰🥰🥰
My whole family loves pbs. It is educational and wholesome television for 1 to 100 year olds.
Happy anniversary PBS and thank you so much for the good work you do. Always a safe and educational choice for kids and for all.
I really liked the part about WCTE. Also I have some TV antennas like the one that the Murphy sisters have.
PBS kids is required tv for my kiddo. While PJ Mask and similar cartoons are entertaining, nothing beats the educational content of PBS. Happy Anniversary PBS!
🎶Happy Birthday Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday dear PBS🎶 Thank you for all you have done and continue to do. We love you. ❤❤❤
Had to take pledge calls for them last March i was shocked how many people watched that station who wanted to donate especially in rural America i got so many calls from people in rural Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi.
Been watching Channel 11 since 1969💘
PBS 13 for me since 1974 Monty Python

PBS was truly a very special channel!!! Escape of possibilities and figuring what I've wanted in my life. It helped me discover my love and passion for the Performing Arts, Music, Traveling the world, and everything that this world has to offer. Grew up on Thirteen WNET, WLIW21, and NJN!!
Childhood era: Sesame Street, Barney (at the time when it first came out with the original cast), Kino's Storytime, Reading Rainbow, Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood, The Kidsongs TV Show, Wishbone, Carmen Sandiego, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Zoom
All the same time when I got older, my love for Theater and Music expanded even more watching Great Performances, Live From Lincoln Center, and Masterpiece Theater. It was also there when I was introduced to The 3 Tenors, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Andre Rieu, Celtic Woman, Celtic Thunder, and all the major artists that had multiple concert specials!
Thank you PBS!!! Keep sharing more music and arts with people. Of course, to everyone out there, please continue to make a generous donation to your local station to celebrate the future of the arts on Public Television especially opening the doors to future performers out there like myself.
Here's to another 50+ years!!!
I absolutely love PBS. I’m 46 years old and I grew up watching PBS. I still watch PBS. My two daughters grew up watching PBS. My grandson watches PBS. I remember when Mitt Romney said he would cut off federal fund for PBS. Right then he showed everyone the TOOL that he is.
I used to watch Zoom and Electric Company.
I saw Rita Moreno at one of her cabaret shows. After the show, she was autographing her debut CD in the lobby with people lined up. As she was autographing my copy, I said, "I thought when you came out on stage, you were going to sing the 'Punctuation Song' (from _The Electric Company_ )." So she sang a few bars for me right there.
Fabulous! Such a great talent!
I am first generation PBS. I watch by choice, always have. News and interviews that are straightforward. Children's programming that isn't trying to sell them something every 7 minutes. Shout out to KQED in San Francisco.
I grew up watching KCET in Los Angeles. Watching Sesame Street, Mr Rogers neighborhood, and much more.
Remember the KQED auctions at the Cow Palace?
The Ken Burns series THE CIVIL WAR should be required viewing in all USA classrooms studying the Civil War era.🤩🤩😍😍

My first experience with PBS were The Electric Company, Sesame Street, Contact, and many more one of the first kids to discover the network when it started
Happy 50 Years To PBS
I’m not crying. I’m not crying. I’M NOT CRYING!!!!!
Unfortunately I was a teenager when Mr. Rogers came to be. I wish I would have been younger. Hearing about the lives some kids lived and the benefit of his positive outlook might have made a difference in my life too.
From NET to PBS...great programs!

That is so awesome! Thanks for that touching story! You made my Monday!
How ironic was it that while I was in the middle of watching this video CZcams stopped it to run commercials?
I flipping love PBS!!!

The Macneil Lehrer, yes I'm dating myself, and Nature were 2 of the shows that I would watch with my Dad, and am so grateful for them, and all of the educational programming that linked me to my resident Sociology Professor. PBS is a jewel, and it's unconscionable that short sighted politicians want to gut funding for this and the NEA, and other programs that enrich the minds and imaginations of Americans of all ages.

Regardless on which country, public broadcasting service is important on shaping the country. It have been replaced by social media and CZcams. Still I believe as a human, we have our freedom to seek the knowledge we want. Happy birthday PBS.
So important! So very important!
PBS should never be defunded because of the iconic legacies of Julia Childs, Fred Rogers, Bob Ross, Lavar Burton and Reading Rainbow, Ken Burns, Sesame Street, Electric Company, Zoom, Master Piece Theater, McNeil/Leher, Arthur, American Masters, Justin Wilson, America's Test Kitchen, PBS News Hour, This Old House, etc. Too many to mention. We wouldn't know who we are or what to do with our lives without these well meaning programs..

I grew up watching PBS KIDS shows, as well as Nature and NOVA, and many other nature-themed shows! They should also do a PBS KIDS throwback channel featuring classics like Dragon Tales, Between the Lions, Reading Rainbow, Bookworm Bunch, It’s a Big Big World, and more!
It’s older than that. I watched it when I was a kid, I’m 74. My daughter is 52, born the year Sesame Street started. Julia started before that on WGBH Boston.

The one thing I really miss about streaming tv is PBS. 😢 With cable, I had I think 4 or 5 PBS stations to choose from. The biggest loss due to a smaller budget.
I can't seem to find the credits on this post. Is the narrator, Phyllis Rosenblatt? I listened to this post and wondered for a few minutes, why am I recognizing that voice? Then I remembered her voice from my favorite Nevada Barr audio novels... he narration is the best of all of the many books I've listened too!
Thank goodness for PBS, they need to expand more, for those people who got nothing, like internet, no cellphone signal, cable or even other local networks..imagine living like that...Congress need to return cartoon shows to local networks, poor kids can't afford netflix or cable.
Things are different than when I was a child of the 1970s and 1980s. Things are done on behalf of the corporate interest and not for the public interest, and children of today will suffer for it.

Of course certain American politicians want to stop funding to PBS.
Republicans want to keep the electorate, especially those that are poor, isolated and in the dark.
