Oh nice sam, thanks for this, I was looking at getting one of these for Christmas, but couldn’t find any good reviews, and yours are always good and trustworthy.
In my view there is No Excuse for any working model to have tight spots. Not sure about the connection between the locomotive and the tender. Will it become loose over time?
The one I was waiting for! So glad there is finally a decent GWR loco out there, high hopes for the Prairie now! Re: the chimney, Dapol have gone for the 63xx variant, which like the 53xx and 73xx had cast iron rather than copper capped chimneys and therefore usually painted safety valve covers too. Some metal bright work on the Prairie however would be the icing on the cake. Now to go and buy one...
Absolutely - this is what Hornby's GWR locos should be for the price, instead of all that cheap plastic! Duly noted on the chimney - many thanks for the info! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's an incredible user manual! My Bachmann USA locos only come with a parts diagram (which is usually inaccurate) and a page of guidelines and warnings.
Churdward certainly knew how to make a great locomotive. Here we are in the 21st century with Dapol equally creating the exact same beautiful locomotive just on a smaller scale. Lovely review and for a reasonable price. Great Video Sam : )
Great review as always! Regarding the uneven running at low speed, I had the same problem with a Hornby Hall (one of the Hogwarts ones, actually) at the hobby shop where I work. It turned out that the crosshead guides were slightly too tight, and bending them outwards just a miniscule amount helped quite a bit. Might be something to try.
Received mine today. BR lined green livery late crest. Excellent model. Runs well straight out of box. Good crawl on DCC. Two buffers fallen off in box but easily refitted.

When you look at the specifications and detail variants catered for, the price isn't as bad as it sounds when you just take it at face value. Also bear in mind that it has been commissioned by Locomotion Models/Rails, rather than being a direct Bachmann product.

Hey, Sam. The locomotive is fantastic and Dapol have really been ahead of the times with this model especially with the connection between the loco and tender, it looks almost like a connector to an iPod/iPhone charger or something and the smoke box with the DCC socket to remove and put in, it’s a fantastic idea! Probably the best loco to buy from Dapol, so far.
Hi Sam I agree with you hole heartily on your review one point especially was the dcc set up is brilliantly done. and yes worth the money. Great review Sam thank you. I a may get me on of those some day.
i think that a feature that would be really cool to see would be having proper suspension on the tender wheels because i have a set of 6 full metal coaches and two full metal locomotives from the 1960s that do and it looks beautiful when they are in motion running around

That's true - been some lovely models this year! Thanks for sharing - yes maybe I was a bit generous on the mechanism/quality, but I was very impressed overall, and I wanted the scores to reflect that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
With winter right around the corner , I think a good project that would be appropriate for it would be a snow plow tender ,just go on eBay and look for a cheap OO scale tender turn into it .
I was thinking of getting a Mogul, but was a little doubtful after watching that review on the Dapol Terrier. But now if I decide to get one, I can feel fully confident that I won't be disappointed. The mechanism, ease of installing a DCC decoder, and especially the loco to tender connection definitely make this model worthwhile. I'm not really concerned about the torque mainly since I don't have any gradients. Now I can be fully confident that Dapol's upcoming release of The Manor will be a great model. That one I will definitely purchase. -Raymond
.... WOW. That locomotive is absolutely stunning! I like the easy to couple tender! (wish I could get one but it’s hard to find in the country I live in...) This is incredibly innovative and pretty good detail! Anyway nice video Sam!
Thanks Cole - it is pretty amazing! See what kind of postage rates Hatton's can do for you - they ship worldwide quite reasonably! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam! It’s a great looking loco, really good attention to detail & finished beautifully! I love the plug & play nature of the DCC connector & the tender connection! DCC has not been widely adopted in Japan, but a large amount of models are built to accept chips, either by similar plug & play or by replacing PCBs, however only Kato marks it’s plug & play models as DCC ready in Japan! It’s quite ridiculous that so many every day consumer devices are getting simple plug-in interfaces, but there are still so many models coming without even having basic provisions for DCC.
Mine is in the post, and I am so glad it scored so well! I needed to replace a Bachman one which cannot run due to wheels slipping on axles. Really looking forward to its arrival.
Thanks a lot mate - yes overall I thought this was top notch, glad you liked it! Hope you're doing okay- having fun meddling with the tea box? ;) Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Amazing review on the Dapol GWR Mogul steam locomotive! I have to say, the detail on this model looks very impressive, especially for a brand new locomotive! It’s unfortunate that the performance let’s this thing down a little bit, but other than the performance, it still looks really amazing! I’m gonna give this a B+! 😃👍
An adequate model from Dapol at last. Something that looks like it was made for a purpose rather than down to a price. If they put a better motor in it, they would have a winner.
Beautiful and Amazing model Sam! It’s hard to understand why only two were preserved despite how many were built! Still, we’re lucky to have two preserved examples!
wow what a beautiful loco. the green color and the yellow lettering is so nice and i am impressed by the loco and how easy you can install the dcc chip. :) :) :)
@@SamsTrains You are welcome Sam. I did some digging yerster dayevenig. I found out that the Swedish staterailways bought locos from peacocks and some of the private railways bought sadeltank engines. Swedish Staterailways bought those engines from 1850-187? or 80 ies. I was suprised over how many engines we bought from Great Britain, one could say that England helpt Sweden to build steam locos. :) :) :)
Quite an impressive model, especially because they have included a NEM pocket within a Kinematic coupling.....long overdue. This now needs to be applied to loco and tender, providing closer loco/tender distance. Only criticism I have, is the placing of the decoder should you wish to fit a smoke unit. But well done Dapol. Excellent review.
It's a good job I watched this after watershed, as that's the first time I've ever heard you use any kind of coarse language (unless you count a few instances of "bloody", which, despite what my primary school classmates always responded in chorus, I remained unconvinced it's an inappropriate epithet for young children to employ). When it refused to return to speed after rounding the turn, it reminded me of my tendency in train simulators to use too much steam early on and not have enough later on in the journey.
@@SamsTrains "Damn" and "Hell", which aren't really coarse by most standards, but if you include them in a video game, it often brings its rating from E to E10+
The first GWR Mogul I owned, based on her real-life counterpart resident at Didcot Railway Centre, worked well. But after only about two years, if my brain serves me correctly, she decided to suddenly give up the ghost. Thankfully, I found a replacement in Chester Model Shop and the new Mogul engine works perfectly well. However, once upon a passenger train day Cat Valley Steam Railway Style, the Chocolate & Cream Mk. 1 Brake Coach detached itself and poor innocent Millie the Mogul crashed into it. No damage was sustained, she's still working perfectly. Who doesn't suffer the odd railway disaster?
Ahh sorry to hear that Kelly - yes the older Mainline/Bachmann models were quite unreliable and prone to failure! Maybe you could ask Santa for a nice new Dapol one?!? :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Goodness me! I was pleasantly surprised to see how much better this Dapol loco was compared to previous ones. Here’s hoping they continue to be like this (maybe slightly better performance) and then I’d be seriously worried if I was Bachman. Certainly being left behind (in steam locos) by Hornby, Oxford and now Dapol!

Chris Rea calls it 'steam train blues'...

With winter right around the corner , I think a good project that would be appropriate for it would be a snow plow tender ,just go on eBay and look for a cheap OO scale tender turn into it .
Ooh that would be cool - I'd love to make one! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Good to see innovation in design
You were super quick with this Sam. Great review
haha thank you - it was a long day! xD
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
-Raymond
Yeah, it was reasonable to be sceptical - but yes they are really good, can highly recommend now! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam! Just wanted to say thanks for commenting on my video on my d16!
No problem Tee - it was a good video! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey sam! I just wanna say that the "collab" is done and its pretty funny!😂 while doing it i coudnt stop laughing and i hpoe you like it!
haha awesome, I'll have to check that out!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Just watched it - amazing work - I'd love to see you do the same for this year's Christmas special when I release it!! xD
@@SamsTrains that would be my honor to do it! But im currently working in gordent and teh turntable
Locos with lots of metal are really great hope to see some more in the future
I agree - makes a big difference to the quality in my opinion!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks very much Ewan - me too, that was very clever! Yes you're right - it's very questionable isn't it?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Mine is in the post, and I am so glad it scored so well! I needed to replace a Bachman one which cannot run due to wheels slipping on axles. Really looking forward to its arrival.
Marvellous mate, really hope you enjoy it! No such nonsense with this model, very fortunately!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh WOW! This model looks amazing even if there are gearing issues. Certainly beautiful to look at! Great video as always! Cheers mate :)
Thanks a lot mate - yes overall I thought this was top notch, glad you liked it! Hope you're doing okay- having fun meddling with the tea box? ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yeah I'm doing okay thanks mate. I didn't do that with the tea I just found it and reported it!
Thanks Sam, another fantastic video! You're the best!
Thanks so much Simon! :D
I actually like this with the plain finish. Has a nice sheen too.
Me too William - a beautiful finish! :D
THAT TRAIN LOOK SO GOOD
I agree! :D
Ah A Mogul, makes me smile watching her run.
Me too - just a lovely one to watch! :D
@@SamsTrains absolutely
Hi Sam. The second run of these locks seem to have fixed the defects like the motor/ torque issue
Bull man!!!!! So good to see him again!!!! Yeah in the strength of this review I am likely to buy one..... it’s a well thought out model!
haha I agree! Great to hear that - it is a beautiful design! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That 'copper' bonnet that you refer to Sam is actually made of 'brass' on Great Western prototypes. The chimneys are copper capped.
Duly noted Richard, thanks a lot for the info!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam - another great video! A minor point for you: GWR safety bonnets are made of brass not copper! Hope you don't mind me pointing that out.
A stunning model! Awesome cab details too. Cheers Onno.
Thanks a lot Onno - appreciate it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks so much - yes I'm mightily impressed by this loco - they did an amazing job overall, despite the performance!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
An adequate model from Dapol at last. Something that looks like it was made for a purpose rather than down to a price. If they put a better motor in it, they would have a winner.
Very much so Billy - I agree! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This a game changer with fitting the decoder Sam , lovely loco .......Peter
I agree Peter - really clever stuff! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Beautiful and Amazing model Sam! It’s hard to understand why only two were preserved despite how many were built! Still, we’re lucky to have two preserved examples!
Thanks Ryno - yes it's a pity isn't it? :(
I don’t know what to say.
Except that I love Dapol and everything about their locos
haha yeah - let's hope all of their future models will be like this!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
wow what a beautiful loco.
the green color and the yellow lettering is so nice and i am impressed by the loco and how easy you can install the dcc chip.
:) :) :)
Thanks a lot Oden - you're right, the colour is just fantastic! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Bill, II agree - the whole coupling system is very good indeed!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Sam, enjoyed the review and have now ordered.
Thanks very much Jonathan, really hope you enjoy yours!

What coarse language did I use Steven?!
Ahh that's true - it does look like that! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains "Damn" and "Hell", which aren't really coarse by most standards, but if you include them in a video game, it often brings its rating from E to E10+
Great video. Great loco I hope Bachmann are taking notes
Thanks Stewart, that would be nice! :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes that's is look new box set mate. He's revered cool
haha!! :D
Jeeze, Dapol is a fan of the 43xx. That's why they made so many.
haha yeah - there are quite a few to choose from! :D

They seem to be selling like hotcakes too

Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Me too Harry - real breath of fresh air this one! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
You do a fantastic job Sam keep the good work up cheers
Many thanks Geoffrey, that's very kind of you!
