  • I recently caved and bought a 3d printed pinhole film camera named "Scura", produce by Dora Goodman. Here are my initial thoughts about the camera and my experience using it. The camera uses 35mm film. Pinhole cameras are a lot of fun and it was nice to get my hands dirty building this 3d printed model.

    I should have left an actual review before. You do a great job covering the essentials of this camera! No blather, no unnecessary anything. The majority of youtube content providers could use yours as a model!
    BTW, as of May, 2023, Dora Goodman still appears to not offer either Scura models for sale. I've asked if there are future plans to do so, but no response. The 3-D printing files are downloadable. Maybe I can find a commercial source for 3-D printing? I may ask a friend to print one or both for me. Thanks again

    Thanks for the thoroughness of this review! I was specifically concerned about the shake from the magnet shutter, so I was happy to see you address that. I love the slowness of pinhole photography! There is so much thought and effort that goes behind each frame. Can’t wait for my Scura to arrive! This video was so helpful!

      I'm glad you found the review useful! Yea - the magnet has its pros and cons but luckily pinhole photography is simple enough were even your finger can be a useful tool 😊 I agree -- pinhole photography is slow and relaxing. enjoy your scura

    Thanks you so much for you video! I got one for christmas and just finished my first roll! It’s definetly gonna be a learning curve but using finger to cover the pinhole tip to avoid the magnets shake is super useful!!! Thanks!!!

    I really like the content you are creating. Please keep these videos coming!
    I have been shooting 6x6 pinhole photos at home this last couple of weeks. I found it to be a very good way to keep photographing during quarantine .
    I might give it a try to 35mm pinhole. That panoramic format looks very interesting!

    Tip for keeping track of shots: a bit of masking or washi tape. Write down info on it so you don't forget. My memory is TRASHED so this has been an essential

    Hello, Nice video. I just received one of these cool little cameras. I put it together and did mostly alright with that part. A question: How can you tell if the film is advancing properly? Also, is it easy to feel the tension when you reach the end of the roll? Finally, about how many photos per roll? I am guessing about 18 but could be way off. Thanks for your answers and for the videos you are making.

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  Před 4 lety

      Hi! You should see both knobs rotating if the film is advancing properly. It is definitely possible to feel the tension at the end but I recommend you count shots so that you know when you are getting close. Usually 15-18 shots I believe. Lastly, turning both knobs when trying to advance the film will make it a bit easier, as long as you ensure to maintain tension.

    Have you tried any old Soviet cameras? They also have a special look. I'm just editing a vlog about Smena 8 camera.

      @@ribsy, For now, I've tried Lubitel 2, Zenit 11, Zorki 4k, Vilia, Smena 8.
      Of all these, Vilia is my favorite. However, it is plastic and looks cheap. The photos have a defect - it has a special look in (un)sharp edges. That it makes it special. Some people don't like Vilia at all. For me it's great. I've made two episodes on my channel about Vilia - I will be honored if you look and say your opinion (about the vlog and about the camera). ;) I'm just starting out.

    I would shot negative film for more exposure latitude, but really good review. I worry about my klutziness in trying to assemble one. Like the price….

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  Před 4 lety +2

      hey - for the first 10 shots, its 2 full turns of the full. for the second 10 shots, its 1.5 turns of the knob. you can use the arrow on the knob for reference.

      Thanks for watching - yes pinhole photography isn't for everyone. however, there are certain moods you can create with them that are wholly unique. also, i love the physics behind them - so cool to be able to take a photo with basically any object you can turn into a pinhole cam 😊
