Hingis wasn't arrogant, she was full of self-confidence. That's something else. Can you blame her being such a rare prodigy. According to Marcella Mesker, a pro tennis player and WTA board member at the time, Hingis was friendly and popular with her peers too - always an indication of a player's behaviour. But The Williams played for long haul lol Longer careers, longer sustained excellence and MORE Grand Slam wins. Tortoise and the Hare symbolism. Listen - there have been many matches where the crowds cheer either Venus or Serena's opponents loudly, but this wasn't one of them. I'd say it was pretty even, though the crowd loved the comeback in the 3rd set. The points were spectacular and both players deserved all the noise.
Imo Hingis was nr. 2 in all grand slams that year. She was by far the one closest to defeating Venus in both wimbledon and US open and Pierce in the french. I think 2000 was actually Hingis second strongest year measured on her form after 1997.

Her first call came in 1999, in the final of the US Open, and everything continued in the early 2000s. She could not resist the forceful and aggressive style of the new century.

She retired bcoz she couldn't win a slam after 1999. Serena ,2002 would destroy her any version and by 2003 belgians also took over. She was finished as slam contender. And her ego couldn't handle it @@fundhund62
