In the second Doctor episodes with Daleks, the Doctor nearly gets shot several times, only managing in one situation to survive because another person shoves him out of the way.

Fun fact for people who tend to miss it. At 2:40 when the Dalek exterminates the Doctor the beam actually just skims his body. This is because RTD previously stated in Doctor Who annual 2005 that a full blast from a Dalek's ray can kill a timelord dead (no regenerations)
This is the reason why the beam continues to move across the screen even after "hitting" the Doctor.

To this day, my favourite part of this scene is seeing how Donna understands the Doctor more than anyone else. She knows what Rose meant to him, how much he loved her, and she is so happy to see them reunited.
It's a brilliant moment of acting from Catherine Tate, too. The whole eye gesturing thing.

You know that when they read the script the didn't tell David about Billie's part. They skipped the whole thing. So when Donna told him to ask her he was truly confused. That's why he ran so fast.
No. That's not true at all.
That's not remotely true. The reason he ran so fast is because instead of having the cameras on rigs, they put them on the back of quad bikes, which allowed the actors to run full throttle instead of holding back so they stayed in shot. David was well aware that Billie was there, in fact they at next to each other at the read through if I remember rightly... Doctor Who Confidential is worth watching, y'know...
The one competent Dalek in the entire history & future of the Daleks ... I almost feel bad that Jack had to go and blow it up. He could have at least given it a medal and a salute first.

Donna is the only companion I think that truly got and understood what Rose meant to the Doctor and how much he loved Rose with both his hearts. Martha was just too jealous and wrapped up in her own crush on him, but Donna got it and accepted it. That is just one more reason I love Donna. She is my second favorite companion, the first being Rose of course.

My favorite is that Nardole fella. He's like a foil to the Doctor he was with. Whereas the Doctor was smart about space and time, and incredibly wise. Nardole was more down to earth in his knowledge. Plus, he could fly the Tardis better than the Doctor XD.

While he did love River. Rose Tyler was the love of his many lives. If things had been different I believe he would have married her
I think the whole tragedy is that he never really did love her, or river. He simply can't fall in love with a human in the conventional way. Its like river said...you can't expect the sunset to admire you back.
@ilikebacon river and the doctor were also kinda married in a flux parallel world that never happened and he didn’t tell her his name he told her to look in his eye he was inside a robot and waved at her he might have told her his name later but technically they weren’t married since it was a flux world
It's been confirmed by Steve moffat the writer of doctor who that the doctor is still in love with rose after all this time it doesn't change just because he becomes a woman

When Donna tells the Doctor to "ask her yourself" and he turns and sees Rose, I just cry. Donna looks so happy for him & The Doctor can barely believe his eyes. Then Rose smiles & they run toward each other. Then the Dalek comes :'(
"Doctor, doctor, I'm here."
"Rose. Long time no see"
"Yeah. Been busy...Oh don't die. please don't die"
The tears won't stop. & then in "Journeys end" when Rose says "it's still you" & he says "It's still me" and they hug... You can just see they are SO in love!
You see what you can achieve Daleks when you just shoot the doctor on sight and don't capture him ^-^

I love the way Donna smiles when the doctor and rose they see each other, as Donna has been with the doctor long enough to see how lonely he is and how everyone he loved has been taken away from him and one is finally coming back.

Why has it suddenly become the "cool" thing to do to hate on Rose by nit-picking at her personality?
Seriously, why do people seem to want their shows and moves void of all realistic characters and just full of Mary Sue's who have perfect personalities and never do anything wrong.
Rose is realistic, and if you don't like that, then I don't know what to say to you. There's more to women in fiction then just "bad-ass with a gun and a personalty of gold". Women have flaws, men have flaws, human beings as a whole have flaws and we DO have emotional hissy fits over mediocre crap. If you claim you've never acted like Rose, in any shape of form; never thought any bitchy thoughts to yourself or looked at someone in a "I was here first..." kinda way, then you're a pure liar. Everyone does, at some point, the main thing is that you have the social and moral decency and don't actually act on it.
I like how Rose is written because it's REALISTIC. She feels like a proper person, and not some "character" written for the sake of narrative. Yeah, she is used as a forced plot point at times, but they balance that out by making her a proper character with a normal personality.
She's a much better character then River for example because River was just "there", she never felt like a an actual person. She just felt like a "thing" that were there as a plot point.
And no don't use the bullshit "realistic character =/= good character" argument. A good character is one that can be realistic and you can relate to. Not one that's weird and someone who obviously could never exist in real life because they're too perfect. Such characters are fine and dandy every now and then, and can be a good thing to have to look up to, but spamming them all over the place is just silly.

***** I also hate it how anti-romance people in the DW community are. As soon as a character reciprocates any deeper emotions for the Doctor (Rose and Martha), they're automatically classed as 'obsessed.' While i thought Rose was quite clingy towards the Doctor, people seem to forget that love/romance is a very normal and personal human experience -- and as you said -- builds for a more realistic, relatable character as a result. Romance isn't needed in DW, and love exists in multiple formats, but I hate it how people always expect companions these days to be 'badass, feminist bitches' with unprecedented importance to the DW storyline.
I don't care if she's realistic she's a bitch.
Think about this.
That single Dalek is the only Dalek that has ever succeeded in hitting the Doctor.

Her smile when she sees him is one of the purest I've ever seen in my life.
By the way, that dalek is probably all the Tenrose shippers enemy.
The Doctor and Rose’s relationship is bitter sweet because it always leaves you wanting more.
We never see them reach a point where they kiss often like regular close couples, it’s either to drain the time vortex and save her or a Cassandra possessed body or it’s the Doctor grown from the hand. She makes the decision to stay with him instead of her mum and (sort of) dad but is then swept into a parallel universe away from him. Through a holo call she says she loves him and the call ends before he gets the chance to say it back. They run to each other to reunite after nearly 2 seasons apart and a Dalek shoots him down before they reach each other.
They make us want so badly for them to be happy together but they never fully allow it. So bloody effective.
RTD writing was incredible that way
2022 and this is still one of the most beautiful scenes and relationships in the Whoniverse. The chemistry between the doctor and Rose was honestly beautiful and didn’t last long enough :’(
I love the look on all three of their faces. The Doctor and Rose are smiling and running towards each other as fast as they can and Donna is happy to see the Doctor happy. I remember watching this scene for the first time and almost jumping up and down, until the Dalek came in. A lot of different emotions in just two scenes and the actors played every one of them beautifully.
That look on the Doctors face when seeing Rose is so well done it feels like this is actually the 1st time they've seen each other in a long time great acting

This moment completely me caught me off guard when I watched the episode for the first time, I literally screamed “NO!!!” When the Dalek appeared and shot the Doctor, I literally thought the 10th Doctor was officially gonna die and regenerate at this moment. Hats off to Russell T. Davies’ writing and adding so much tension to this moment.
One Dalek, on his own, probably never seen the Doctor in person before, sees him and shoots (and doesn't miss!), yet a fleet of Daleks who have met the Doctor numerous times can't kill him - if they did they'd probably miss! Is it just me, or should that Dalek be The Supreme?
He should be, but then even Moffat wouldn't be able to make the Doctor escape from them.
Can I just say how pissed I was at the Dalek for coming in at that time, at least let them hug gahhh
I always found this scene very emotional and a heck of a cliffhanger, but I'm always amazed at how quick Captain Jack is on the draw. As in, he is already aiming at the Dalek when he arrives!
When i first saw this scene i had tears in my eyes (and right now), its just so awesome i loved 10 and Rose :)
You know, the cliffhangers just don't feel the same without the opening notes of the closing theme playing over them.
I love how Gwen highlights Own & Tosh in this, it really shows how much they still miss them. Also, the fact that they used Tosh's 'Time Lock' in this too is good.
This scene made me really mad, The daleks should've shot Rose. Not because I hate Rose, But it would've made this scene more remarkable for everyone
and because the doctor would have told her "I love you" in her dying moments...the fact that he never said it KILLS me.
Lily Roos He did say it, though. He wispered it into her ear in the end of "Journey's End'. I'm mad because he didn't say it out loud for the audience but at least we know he actually did say it.

I love Rose but the Dalek should have shot her, she was armed, and it would have made have been a good reason for The Doctor to start turning into the Timelord Victorious. Also I think if The Daleks were to casually kill off a companion then they'd be scary again.
Plus it would have fulfilled 2 prophecies. The Beasts "Valiant child who will die in battle" and Dalek Caans "One of them will die"
Having said that I suppose RTD knew it would be too obvious if Rose died.
Deathlygunn Two points: for one, this is a family show, to casually kill off a companion, especially the first one since the show came back, would be a bit over the top. Also, logically the Dalek would shoot the doctor as he is their greatest enemy.

Donna was the most friend like companion the Doctor had. She didnt flirted with him or anything. She just wanted to feel like her Life meant something and supported the Doctor when needed since he was emotional falling apart after losing rose. Overall I think Donna, Rory and Bill were the most "helpfull" companions he had.

Doctor who needs to realise that what makes it good is good storytelling, emotional, likeable characters, and moments that fill your heart with joy. The show has always been about love and friendship.

Russell T Davies is returning as show runner. I may watch it again as Doctor who under him was fabulous tv viewing. Good stories, good scripts, excellent cast. It’s been a mess for too long with work issues being at the helm.
I zoned out around series 7 Matt smiths last series it became such a chore with weak characters poor writing and just started looking very cheap the show hopefully Russel to take the show back to it’s roots if anyone can it’s him
