  • I picked up a bunch of aluminum tubing from a yard sale, and decided to make an antenna out of some of it.

I have a few of those radial rings from A99s but had not figured out yet as to how to use them, you, my friend had the perfect solution. I also bought a bundle of 10 loaded whips much like you show here and find it GOOD TO KNOW that they work well. Being at my stage in life where multiple tries to find a solution is harder, your good work gives me the confidence to know a one-time build can work. CBing as its BEST, thank you again.

Mine had some almost 3:1 swr, and I cleaned the heck out of it, it was seeming to be tuned for below channel 1, but I could not face cutting the vintage fiberglass, so I went full send.
Put it on 3 20' fence pipes with tapers on one end and had a 58' tower in 8th grade. Had the hot finals going nation wide and groundwave to higher elevations of Illinois, Michigan and south of Kokomo, but could not get the funds together for SSB. Took it down real quick one day when an impressed neighbor warned me of a huge storm coming. Tower Down!!!

Looks like a home made stardust using the ground plane kit those physical set up translates to the low swr hitting the ,45° radials gives a good launch pad for ground communications if you plan on keeping that ant in air the connections could be sealed with the monkey tape ( don't know actual name) but is like layer tar stretchy once placed last forever we in catv techs used it to seal both open exposed and buried cables also known as " monkey snot"
Love your vids remind me of the days I used to build myself but now limited physically

Hey there me mower junkie. Another fine antenna project. We had fantastic skip conditions to USA last Sunday infact I even tried to call to see if you were out there on 385 lsb but it was so splattery it was hard to hear anything. I actually got time to finish my slim Jim antenna I made from ladder line and my homemade Balun. And I must say it worked really well as I did work quite a few USA and Canada stations on 415 lsb as it was a bit quieter up there It was great 👍. Keep safe my friend. Good dx 73s .

I have a 102 whip in the air about the same night as him and barfoot on my Lincoln 2+ at about 30 ish watts on side band I talk from Santee South Carolina up to Sumter and down to Summerville SC. I can do the same on am if it's not too much noise and fm is good too at about 20 watts. I don't usually turn it up that high on fm I usually turn on my kl 200p amp and radio set to about 1 watt input. I'd rather use amp life instead of radio life.

I'm in the process of building a simple 1/4 wave GP antenna for 6 meters (50 Mhz) Ham radio. The ground planes will be slightly longer than the radiator by a couple of inches. (5% I think). This would apply equally to 27 Mhz. Attenuated GP's are as bad as loaded radiating elements. While your playing antennas try a 5/8 wave or better still a .64 (point 64) wavelength...using the soil as the ground. I did it on CB about 40 years ago and the low angle radiation is ideal for long range 'local' stuff. Lay wires underground if you wish...it does help with earthing. 73.

CZcams replayed this and knowing from your later videos of yours you have recently worked the UK, EU, and Australia this ground plain favoring the low end could let you work New Zealand from 26, 330 up remembering their channels are on the 0s, not the 5s. The best time could be around sundown or sunup either end. Tune around and see if you hear anyone. Also, Germany has a group of 40 channels below 1 also, of course, they also use the same 40 as the USA. traffic is still light so finding a quiet spot isn't hard yet, but it likely will be before long as folks realize skip is back more often.
I might be wrong and just using 36-40 may be quiet enough that tuning around is unnecessary. I love to go off the beaten trail. I loved finding an odd station on some oddball frequency but back then there were so many users working your mobile a mile away was hard. The 23 legal and the slot at 15A sideband was all we had unless we got a ham rig. No so-called import radios were available. Crystals gave you 4 channels but took away others until the channel boxes or VFOs became available.

I’m curious about making one.

If you have not already done it, you will need to waterproof the coax connections, if not water will ingress and affect the coax and SWR. Yes, I realise (realize) it is only for test, but just in case someone else tries to copy it.
By the way, out first antennas we were allowed to use were the same design, except we were only allowed to put a 1.5mtr whip on top :-( UK Government rules. The Plunkers!

Again YT BROUGHT YOU BACK! If YOU co-phased these unlike the recently used loaded whips, it should be broad banded better and have more gain. If you wanted longer radials, just get some stiff #8 aluminum ground wire cut the same length of the radiator and use a plastic arm to hold at 45 degrees. Your setup will out talk a ss whip because aluminum is better. Not strong enough for a mobile at 54mph but better as you use it. DX Commander played around with an all wire version of this on an 18 meter pole and just think being at 60 feet over 15 feet? I plan to order his 18 meter pole and use it.
