The pianist, Yoshiki (58) from X Japan (a metal group), wrote and composed this song. It was released in 1989 as their first ballad. The story goes that some Sony execs saw him playing Tchaikovsky on a piano at a club while waiting to perform and asked him to create a ballad. Yoshiki has been playing piano and learning music theory since he was 4. He was in his first band at 12 in 1977 (I think a couple of years after his father committed suicide) and later created X Japan. This is basically their signature song. The group's lead singer (Toshi) was also pretty awesome. I found live performances from them 30 years ago. I think they even have one at the same venue (Tokyo Dome) from back then. Someone said Yoshiki left after this performance to go to the funeral of one of his bandmates that passed late October. If so, maybe this song was in honor of him.
The singers here are the 2 youngest of TXT (21)... Taehyun (in black) and Kai (stage name HueningKai, in white). They said they don't usually like to perform covers, but when they found out who it was with and what song, they felt honored to do it. They said the sad song made them choke up a bit while singing it. They also wanted to take the opportunity to showcase how their vocals have improved from singing on tour. They are some of the few strong vocalists in k-pop that could sing this song so beautifully (with emotion, softness, power and control) and show such stage presence.
This awards show was just last week. I'm not sure how long all the artists had to prepare, but it was lovely.
Recommendations: TXT did an all live intimate session at Tiny Desk Korea recently where they performed 3 songs off their last album. They also have a whole concert posted on their CZcams channel from when they headlined Lollapalooza (Chicago) this year. A little further back to March, they posted the first performance of their 2nd fan song Blue Spring, that they surprised everyone with during the first date of their world tour, on their channel. It's raw and emotional. It was also among the songs they performed at Lollapalooza. When the camera scanned the audience, it was so beautiful to see all the lights in the dark.

I didn't know he was attending to HEATH's funeral directly after this performance, and yes this ballad is one of the most iconic X Japan songs, beside of that is one of Yoshiki's most iconic compositions.
About the video you say, yes there is one if I'm not wrong from the Last Live Concert in 1998 before Hide's death and I think there are some from the concerts before the Last Live and the one they had in 2004-2007 (I don't remember the exact year) when they reunited

    • @lininrabbit

@@nuriiaCR I don't think it's Heath's funeral? The news said the funeral was held right after his death. But I know in the morning of the same day of MAMA, it was Heath's flower giving ceremony, and Yoshiki played endless rain in the ceremony.
The Last Live was in December 1997. Hide's death is 1998. Before the disbandment X used to hold concerts in Tokyo dome annually. There are so many versions of Endless Rain (in or out of Tokyo Dome) because it was their signature song. There is even a version with Paul Stanley and Sarah Brightman 🤣. My personal favourite is the Tokyo Dome 1992.1.7 version, which is the last performance before the former bassist Taiji leaving the band. It was a very emotional performance and I love how he played the prelude, the bass sounded amazing along with Yoshiki's piano.

    • @fimefave
      @fimefave Před 6 měsíci +1

@@lininrabbit Wow. I didn't know if the other person's comment I saw about the funeral was true or not (thanks for clarifying 😉), but it felt like it would be a wonderful gesture for him to play it there in memory of Heath.

    • @nuriiaCR
      @nuriiaCR Před 6 měsíci +2

@@lininrabbit Ohh okay, sorry I didn't search much about Heath's funeral and I didn't know when it was, for the flower giving ceremony I saw news with the video of him playing Endless Rain but I didn't know it was on the same day, maybe is the ceremony the other comment is explaining as well.
Thanks for correcting me on the Las Live's date, yes it was on December 31st 1997 instead of in 1998. I like as well the version of 1992 before Taiji's leaving X and the vibe on that concert, but personally I still prefer the one of Las Live as in the moment I saw it for the first time I didn't know X Japan came back in 2007 (I was 11 back then).
For the version with Paul Stanley I think I haven't heard that (so I'm going to search it 😂) and for the version with Sarah Brightman the one I know is the one they made on TV during covid with her, Sixtones, Baby Metal, LiSA, Milet, Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen (they actually is one of my favs as now this ver at MAMA Awards is too)

@@fimefave I think most of the times he plays songs like Endless Rain or Tears (that wrote to his father), Without You (that wrote for Hide) and now Angel as well (that recently wrote for his mother) he performs all in memory of his beloved family and friends that are no longer with him, and in this case as the most recent lost was Heath's it would be in his memory

Endless Rain was composed by Yoshiki (on piano) for his band X Japan. That's the reason why Anton (from Riize) needs to read the musical notes for the cello on this one, since this is not "his/their" song, it's more like him together with the boys from TXT and ZB1 are paying homage to Yoshiki-X Japan by singing-dancing-playing the cello with him on this performance.

I'm glad to see that you are also talking about Yoshiki's greatness here, since there is not much about him in the comments of Mnet's videos.
Taehyun said that he had a hard time deciding how much originality to put into this performance. Since it is a very famous song (especially since this is a performance in Japan.), he practiced while wondering how he should sing it or if he should put the essence of X JAPAN's way of singing.
He sang in his own way, but I think he added some rock style singing at 16:05. It was so great.
Their performance was so amazing and beautiful. I was in the audience and got goosebumps.

I happened upon your channel today because of this reaction. This level of staging is very much the norm for the MAMA awards performances (although this performance in particular was IMO one of the best) - they always have elaborate lighting, sets, and amazing performers. If you look up the MAMA awards, you can find more excellent performances from this years show as well as previous years when groups like Stray Kids and BTS performed as well.
The guy playing the cello was Anton (age 19) from the rookie group RIIZE and the dancer is Han Yujin (age 16 or 17) from the rookie group ZEROBASEONE. Both groups shared the rookie of the year award. You might want to give their groups MVs a listen as well (or watch their performances from the MAMA awards). To think both of those teenagers only just debuted this summer yet have such composure is remarkable. The rapper, Jaehyun is from another rookie group "BOYNEXTDOOR."

    Zerobaseone "Crush" or "In Bloom"
    Boynextdoor "Serenade"

As other's have commented, Yoshiki is an amazing musician, the composer of this piece and the founder of the heavy rock/metal band X-Japan. He has performed at Madison Square Garden with X-Japan and has had several orchestral concert performances at Carnegie Hall in NYC (all or parts of these are on CZcams). As was mentioned by another commentor, this song is about Yoshiki dealing with his father's suicide, which occurred when Yoshiki was 10 years old. A second song he wrote about the impact of that event on his life and dealing with the aftermath is "Tears". Here is a link to X-Japan performing that song with Yoshiki on piano (although his principle instrument in X-Japan was drums) and Toshi on vocals (with English subtitles!):

In the 1990s X-Japan's record label, Sony, wanted to launch them in the US. They brought them to the US and arranged a large press conference. The US press was so ugly, criticizing them for not speaking English (although Yoshiki does) and telling them they couldn't hope to be successful in the US without speaking english. They actually intimidated the band who, as a result, decided not to launch in the US. So grateful that K-Pop has broken through, although sadly the US press is not a whole lot better than they were in the 1990s.
    Keep up your great reactions!

I really enjoy these songs from awards ceremonies where different groups get together to do a performance. I had heard this song before I think but it never hit me as much until this rendition. After hearing it I looked up the lyrics and also looked up the original video by X Japan (the pianist was part of that group). It is a really good song and although I like the original I think I like this version better but that is also because of the mixed performance and instruments etc.

Toshi is the singer of the rock band x japan...yoshiki is the composer and the pianist of the group, x japan was one of the most popular rock band and not just in Asia for music lovers, endless rain is usually played only by x japan because yoshiki didn't like anyone to accompanying him beside toshi. This collab is probably the first time that yoshiki played infront of a public after the death of most of the members now.....(toshi is still alive 😊)

    Hi!! BOYNEXTDOOR's fan here!
    Myung jaehyun's rap! (10:23)
Was his own self written rap for the song! Here is the lyrics translation :
    Now wake from the dream
Even though it’s a pity sometimes
You smile when you don’t want to, you don’t have to do that
It's like losing the last rose in the desert
Even if you water it belatedly, it's a name that can't bloom
I'm standing at the extreme point
    Spring will come soon
Is it the winter that I've been waiting for that won’t pass
You who have to grow up to be a child
Stay with me until the rain stops, It's okay
Thank you for reacting to this!! Everyone in the stage was amazing. I'm not entirely sure but I think it was a sound effect you guys were talking about, not back up vocals as it was his own voice. A little behind the story about his rap part is that he wrote it for the youngest member of the group who was having a tough time then! Its really special 🥺
You guys should definitely check out more from BOYNEXTDOOR, maybe tracks like "one & only" & "but sometimes" or "serenade" we hope you like it!!

tbh with the sheet music thing, as someone who was in choir and an orchestral/marching band, singing is sooooo much easier than playing an instrument. its so much easier to mess up when playing an instrument vs vocals. most instrumentalists end up not needing the sheet music because they end up memorizing the song with practice, but its there just in case. and honestly memorizing songs for singing is a lot easier than with instruments too, it takes a lot less effort and time imo, and considering Anton is an idol he probably didnt have much time to memorize the song.

I wonder how performers for these songs are chosen. Yoshiki’s name is on the piano, so I knew something was special from before he started playing. I can’t imagine singing for the composer. I guess you figured out that the song was originally sung by the accompanist.

Yoshiki Channel has playlist of his classical works. X Japan has official channel with album songs in playlist, not all the albums are there. Yoshiki composed a classical anniversary piece for the Emperor of Japan. His new rock band called The Last Rockstars also has 2 singles out with MV. He composed the song Imitation Rain for the debut of JPop group Sixtones and Crazy Love for debut of XY. Does he stop there? No, he's flown to UK & Paris for premier of his movie Yoshiki: Under The Sky (he's the director) which features many other singers and groups. He did a premier in Japan of his movie and was joined by Godzilla! How many can say the did a photo op with Godzilla on the red carpet!😮 Also he composed I.V. the soundtrack for SAW IV. 😅😅

I just want to say this is a birthday present for Boynextdoor's maknae, Woonhak (29/ 11), who had a hard time recently (because of his late grandfather a few days before the MAMA awards).
