- How about a change of pace? Recently a friend came to me with his 2019 Ram Roadmaster Van Project. To help him live that Van Life, we added a CRL Sunroof, new rear windows from Van Windows Direct, and wired up his LED Light bar.

It's always scary to cut big holes in your new vehicle so he was smart to get you to help out.
wyattoneable yea I don’t blame him for being a little hesitant, I would be too, if it were mine. 😅😅
I have no interest in living in a van/tiny home, etc but find the approaches & solutions to problems encountered quite interesting. Picked up some tips that I may use for my projects - would never have thought to paint a cut gasketed edge, but your explanation for this makes absolute sense.. Your vids are always interesting.
Thank you for your thorough explanation of this installation process! I'll probably still hire someone to put windows into my van because I'm a total chicken about cutting large holes, but this video def made the process seem more approachable.
Nice video. Great tips and instructions. When I was a kid custom vans were a big market: bold paint, big wheels, crazy interiors. Can see this happening again with the van life crowd. Mahalo for sharing! 🐒
garagemonkeysan the custom van scene has been popping up again lately. I did a couple videos from a full Van show last year in fact. The “Van life” and “Custom Van” crowds don’t seem to have a lot of crossover. Different lifestyles I guess, but there is plenty of potential here. If I could justify the loss of Fuel Efficiency, I’d be tempted to get a van myself.
Alan - this is a bit different from what you usually cover, but I did pick up a number of good tips that could apply to other jobs. Good work!
Man.. shades of the 60s and 70s. Installing a "sun" roof in a van. Living in a van. Camping. Oh ya, driving a van.
I guess "they" are right... everything old is new again.
Had lots of good times in vans, decades ago. ;)
I used to get the blanks from a shop that put in a lot of windows and such. It was great for patches that matched the gauge of the metal on vehicles of the time. Plus, it was free. :)
Is flipping tape in the air "in" as well? ;) If so... mad skills.
Good job, as usual, Alan.
Very useful, thanks
Greetings! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm currently looking for pop up roof and having a hard time finding one. Suggestions? How do you feel about rust? and how can you maintain it rust free? Almost everyone is telling me that is a bad idea but I really love to see the sky day or night. What brands should I stay away from? Thank you!
Would a pneumatic sheet metal cutter if available be a good substitute for the jigsaw ? Or would the ribs of the roof make it difficult for the accuracy ?
Metal Bob ribs would really screw that up. A jigsaw or air body saw is really, in my opinion, the best bet here. Less heat input to melt the paint than a Cut Off Wheel, and since it gets covered with a flange, minor cutting mistakes aren’t a problem.
Going to buy snips. I don’t like most snips. My buddy who has moved away had a set he got when he worked for airplane industry modifying custom builds. They looked like wiss but worked amazing better
what size window did you use? Can you post what exact window you used?
The Windows used are linked in the description of the video with the links to tools used. It looks like Van Windows Direct doesn’t sell the sunroof anymore, so unfortunately I can’t say exactly what sunroof was used anymore. I’ll try and find out and update that link when I get a chance.
, Living behind a Piercing Shop Cool ,I be behind a Dentist office. Ya Cheep Caulk Gun is a Killer,,, I use a power Caulk gun,,,,
How is that file attached to the wood handle? That looks like a useful tool
dan hoy It is screwed on. Auto Body Files have countersunk holes in them to screw the file to a Body File Holder (what the wood is called). Or there are flexible handles that adjust the curve of the Body File as needed. I use these all the time in Body Work. It’s how I file fit patch panels, find high spots on panels, etc etc.
I appreciate the reply!
