After owning many evos and repairing many too I think the main points to highlight is the reliability issues with the evos which you did touch on. Especially the transmissions....however....parts are scarce and expensive. Running one just isn't what it was 10 to 15 years ago. It's mad money now.
Yes they are drivers cars and raw but....over 500bhp on the evos I got sick of replacing broken transmissions. Even below 400 bhp they need to be handled delicately and that's back in 2010 when the gearboxes were ten a penny and plentiful on the second hand market.
My 700bhp evo went through a gearbox every few weeks.
My dsg TTRS while faster and boring in comparison to the handling and feedback of an evo.....just runs and runs ...and its transmissions can cope everyday. It never misses a beat. It's drove 220 miles to santapod ran 10s won its class and drove back.
Evos are great cars but they are old tech and weak. Great peices of engineering for its time and great peices of nostalgia but weak. Running one for spares was like a second mortgage even back in 2010s
Like you say I really do hope mitsubishi bring a new one out with strong up to date tech but it will be dsg no doubt and go the same way as the audis no doubt.
The only option for them was to shot a sequential dog transmission in.....but shotting 15k trans into a car that costs around the same is a lot to do
Maybe for the drag strip the transmission isn’t quite the next best thing, but 500whp daily driven evos last forever man…please, maybe the dsg works just fibe but when the clutch worns out it’ll be a kick in the but to replace them same as evos or any other dsg cars that’s been beaten on…an rs3 cost about 80k Canadian money, used evos x goes for 30k and you drop 50k in it to compete with it…come on the evo will be cheaper and more reliable in the long run…and probably faster than the stock one….my 2 cents and I do own a evo 🥳
@@Bennoit007 are you speaking from experience from owning just one evo? It doesn't matter wether it's on the drag strip or on the road. All the evos 4 to 9 I've worked on its acceleration that kills the transmission.The transmission casting isn't strong enough and it forces the shafts apart and then that's the end of that . They are ticking time bomb.
To say they are cheaper in the long run when parts are as scarce as they are already doesn't ring true either buddy. The prices of the cars and the parts are increasing exponentially.
Evo 4 to 9 your wrong bud. I've owned and worked on many many evo 4 to 9's ...evo 10 no experience and isn't really relevant to the video as the engine and transmissions are totally different
@@Bennoit007 the clutches " worn out " doesn't make sense either bud. Rs3/ttrs are wet multiplate clutches like a motor cycle they can take hundreds and hundreds of launches before they " wear " out. Evos are a traditional dry clutch...even with a twin plate they don't last long 👍
Evo 9 stock Trans (5spd) isn't that bad. I beat mine like an Alabama wife and it took it without issue.
My MR car on the other hand did not even survive stock levels of power.
My trans has survived beautifully at 650whp on a 2.4 build granted it’s got ppg billet shafts and shit in it.
Nice whip, I grabbed my 06Ix with 3 miles on it from the dealer. Fast forward to 2024, car is sitting at 68k non molested other then full exhaust and tune. Had no idea in the future it would be somewhat considered a unicorn. The car always puts a smile on my face when driven. I have teen kids now and it’s funny how there friends will come over and say wow your dad has a car from the fast and furious movie! lol

We are lucky enough to currently both an AMG A45S and a Mitsubishi Evo, and the Evo is by far the better handling car (it's proper AWD system helps) and is just a nicer drive, even the Mrs prefers the Evo.
Even when we take out both cars, it is always the Evo that gets all the attention, people just love it. I've owned Evo's since 2003 and i will do my best to never be without one. Very special cars.
It's better handling because you feel more information from the wheel as it has less driving assists and it's lighter. Nothing to do with the awd system, the amg awd is superior technologically

Love evos, I daily drove an awesome evo x final edition for 3 years and loved every second of it. Super raw and just a pure drivers car.. of course, after my evo I did the thing that most evo owners do and jump ship to an rs3..and also have some regret selling it..but I’ll be buying another evo later on. Once you own one you will never live without one😂 I waited for the 8Y rs3 so I could get all the new updates but man I’ll miss my evo.

Mint. 100% agree the Scoobs and Evos are far more fun than the modern stuff. If you can, find a Spec C and try it out, personally I think Evos are better than scoobs, but the Spec C is a whole different animal to a UK spec STI and easily as good as the best Evos 👍

This has some kudos and character for what it was in its time but that's it. There is no modern equivalent. You cannot compare a hyper hatch to these cars. An RS3 and AMG 45s has to jump through hoops in the modern world of regs and laws and still be fun. Seems to me that many commenting on the RS3 haven't driven the latest one. To say they aren't drivers cars is insanely stupid. Try north Wales to Brecon in the dead of night eyeballs out and tell me then the car isn't a drivers car. Its bloody brilliant, I can testify. I doubt the EVO could stay with it and yes I know there's years between them but I'm not the one bigging them up as modern day performance car slayers. Lets face it, In the dig, the RS3 or AMG would be gone by the time you clutch in clutch out, it simply wouldn't be close. The Evo is an interesting snapshot in automotive history but that is where it should stay. If it were me and I had the money, the real head turner is the UR Quattro Turbo. The Evo wouldn't get much more than a glance in a pub car park if that bad boy was parked next to it. Just my opinion so don't ride me on this lads.

In the dig an 8 year old driving a rs3 or a45 could beat the evo I’ll be first to admit but That’s why modern cars don’t come close to these old bruisers, you actually have to drive them! If your a car person it’s all about the mechanical experience.. if you were born after the 80’s ended then chances are you probably think modern hyper hatches are the dogs dangly bits but as a purist in my mid 30’s old cars are where it’s at.. I’d rather have a mk2 escort or a cavalier Sri over an rs3… modern cars are just wet and take no talent or understanding… modern cars are just point and squirt 🤦♂️
I own both the new AMG A45S and a Mitsubishi Evo, the Evo can out handle the A45S all day long. When me and the Mrs have put both cars up against each other the A45s will pull away slowly in a straight line from our 400bhp Evo, but the Evo can make things up on the bends due to it having a proper AWD system.
What i am saying are FACTS, most who are commenting don't own both cars to be able to make such a judgment.
Oh and for what it is worth, iv'e put 130,000 miles on the Evo and 23K on the A45S.

Yaris GR is the modern ‘old school’ manual AWD alternative. I own both a modified EVO VI and modified FL RS3. The RS3 craps all over the EVO in every performance metric except for being visually a unique (rally) car on the road.

Had a evo 8 mr fq340 reg similar . Was wx04 kuh , now have an rs3 8v stage two and the rs3 is in a different league in everything except handling.
In the u.s. never got the ayc in the 8 or 9. Wish i could try one out

The evo 9 is such a drivers car, puts a smile on your face, the 5 makes the 9 look tame in terms of raw and ready but the mivec engine is the best they made 100%
The moment I beat my friends built engine with a stock turbo, FBO, and dyno tune, of which he said he put down 350whp/330wtq, in my IS38 MK7 GTI with a custom tune, that was the moment I knew the EVO was overrated in terms of modding bragging rights. My friend was so cocky, and was the typical EVO owner. Thought his crap was the fastest crap around. Kept begging me to race him. I finally said yes the day I quit the job we worked at. Gapped him hard. It was honestly shameful on his end.
£20k budget want something driver focused like an evo but can't be arsed for all the maintenance and high insurance/fuel.

RS3 is a bit of a status symbol for some. It's fast,luxurious compared to an evo or Scooby and I guess has the perception of being reliable.

@@fujohnson8667 channels dieing on YT at the time was rife. They changed algorithms with regard to which channels get pushed for recommended content etc. Additionally if anyone unsubscribed because of the “vmax thing” and it exceeds a certain percentage over a time period YT will dead your channel.

Evo's are undoubtedly good at what they do/did, but are now lost in a time thats long gone and not coming back. Even Mitsubishi thought that. Theyre not good at anything youd expect of a motor of this era. The build quality and styling is typically Japanese and taxi like. RS3s and Evo's couldnt be further apart in comparison. Hence my original comment. Il stick with quality built, comfortable, plush and easy driven RS3 for my daily commute. You stick with your 00s ASBO car 👍🏼

Next on the list is a STI Spec C....
Mitsubishi would wipe the floor as long as they used the 4G63, or something similar + modernized. I bought an Evo8 new in 2004, dumped about $18k into it and had approx 570WHP, which back then, was head & shoulders above "American Muscle" cars.... It was EASY MONEY back then, as its reputation was not well known among American Muscle Heads, which never thought a little 2.0 litre 4 Click could gap their big bad V8...
I won a lot of money off of that car, far more than I put into it... Ive always thought about getting another one some day, but the benefits of modern cars are to tempting when you are can only have so many goodies sitting in your garage.
I went with a G80 M3CXD, as my daily, and as a daily..... It has to be the greatest practical sports car, ever. 4 seasons, decent fuel mileage, usable backseats, spacious trunk, stock performance, performance potential, ease of tapping into that potential, technology, & functionality... It goes from Housewife to Stripper with a push of a button. One minute I can have both kiddos sitting comfortably in their backseats & groceries in the spacious trunk... The next minute, Im gapping C8 Vettes, completely stock. Now that Ive upgraded a few aspects, Im now at approx 670AWHP & 590LbsTrq, and will be getting turbo upgrades this spring to push it up to around 800AWHP & 690LbsTrq. All accomplished without effecting its drivability or practicality, two reasons why I love her so much. More than I did my Evo8 when I was a young buck growing my rack...
RS3 & TTRS are another great platform, esp with IROZ Motorsports and how far they have taken that platform. If I get another lady to grace my garage, that will be it, where drivability or practicality wont be a factor as the G80CXD will properly serve that function. RS3/TTRS..... OR..... G42 M240iXD... Which I think the G42 is such high value. With just a few basic mods, its essentially a 1st gen GTR. With as hard as they are pushing the Supra platform, many crossover parts+products, so I think in years to come the G42XD will be revered as a great tuners car. Once the aftermarket serves it well, its surely to be a sweet kit..
Best way is a fresh import with these,you don't pay 20K+ for a car that's crusty underneath,bodykit hides it well.

I love these but don't blame people for an rs3. More reliable, comfortable, easier to drive fast, auto gearbox makes good daily and much nicer interior

@@Sambigs9112 if you put an fq400 maybe even a fq360(to close the hp gap) against the rs3 so 360/400hp against 400hp the evo will slap it in every way possible

@@Birmingham_racing No one put them against each other anywhere, but if you look at the facts, FQ360 is somewhere about 3.9-4.1s to 62, the RS3 is 3.7-3.9s(a bit faster to 62), but then again an FQ400 is 3.5-3.7s. They weigh pretty much the same except the Evos drivetrain with AYC is vastly superior to Audis haldex, not to mention the nose heavy understeer RS3s suffer from because of the heavy 2.5l engine in the front. Putting them on a track I know who I have my money on. Dont get me wrong I love RS3s but the Evos as old as they are are still very much a serious threat to most of the newer stuff. RS3 is a much better daily but on a track the Evo is superior
Love Evos hopefully I can own one some day 🥲 I'm saving up for one for my 25th I can get it on classic insurance but again they're about 30k 🥺
I love evos i had a 6, 9 and 10. I own a RS3 8Y now and the evos dont stand a chance. They are in a different league no point comparing them.

Love the cars, love the Evo, however don't/didn't like Ricky's channel as there was too much hooning... wait for it... with other people on the road, coming the other way, side streets etc etc. Fine line between good (=fun but safe) driving ('Sideways Sid' - so far) and plain old dangerous driving...
The point of an RS3 is to take that engine out of that car and swap it into your passat😁😁

Why compare this stunning classic to a modern Golf r, A45s or RS3 surely the people who are interested in buying either of those cars would never think "id rather buy a Evo" they'd more likely buy an evo as a toy, a plaything for sunny weekends or enthusiast shows.

An RS3 is a fast, daily car for people that don't want anything involving and just want to mash the pedal. An Evo is a drivers car.

Even kids that just have their driving license and have rich parents.

I have a 13 year old 380hp audi a6 3 litre diesel. I smoked a tuned ford fiesta st. But damn these little hatchbacks these days are fast. We where driving above 240kph and i had more torque to pull away some bus lengths of distance.
It was at beginning hard to shake em off. Because of the weight advantage he had. My car weighs 1950 kg. And that hatchback maybe 1200kg.
So my power to weight ratio is very low

What’s the point? Let’s see, the RZ3 is a lot more luxurious. You actually know what you’re paying for despite the EVO being expensive and very crappy build quality inside. You get a 5cyl-t engine, which gives you a lot more performance stock, as well as a lot more mod vs mod. Your RZ3 also won’t have issue after issue like an EVO does. An RS3 allows you to attend business meetings with other taking you seriously, while an EVO screams “kid” down the hall. You get the Audi badge which speaks for itself when it comes to AWD talking points.
EVO’s are cool, but stop with the 🧢. It’s a Mitsubishi dude, not an Audi.
