This is the all new BMW M4. On paper, the latest generation of Munich's hot two-door offers huge promise: the already capable 4 Series is boosted courtesy of a M-Division's 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six with a thumping 503bhp and 650Nm of torque. So is it the sharpest BMW coupe to date? Steve Sutcliffe gets behind the wheel and gives it a grilling.

A proper wheelman. In a world of so called car influencers who frankly haven't got a clue, thankfully we still have proper automotive journos like Steve who can actually tell you whether you should buy a car or not. Steve you're more of an influencer to me (I've owned 3 M3's and 3 911's among many others) than all of the new lot (buy a car, wrap it, change the exhaust, drive it round central London a few times, un wrap it, sell it - yawn yawn) put together. Long may you continue.

Thnks for a really good review!
I find it funny that most here comment about the front and about the weight knowing nothing about how it drives.
    1. The grill looks considerably better live, I hated it in pictures but actually liked it when I saw an Tanzanite blue G80 today
    2. The weight is zero problem if the chassis is engineered well. I have driven several times an Taycan 4S. That car weights about 2300 and is still nimble as a 911. And no I am not joking.
    3. Biggest issue for me is missing of the DCT, but maybe the ZF is better here than in the F90, where it sucks

My bi-fuel MPV with both 50litres fuel tanks fulled up weighs 1800kg….no matter how much you make car pushed down to the road its overweight always makes you feel the immense side force that is strongly worrying experience when cutting corners...and all the tweaks masking it make you deaf to lethal risk and closer to point of no return.... Genuine feature of real sport car is agility and nimble handling giving you experience of organic connection with the machine that essentially whispers where are its limits ..

My wife's Z4 with the 1M engine has 500Nm but it's limited until in third gear and I fixed that by removing the terrible run flat's with some Michelin 4s now it sticks like glue... and improves the ride 10 fold... The dual clutch box is still the cream for a drivers car.. its a shame BMW reduced costs by sticking in the ZF box in this new M4 model.

BMW is deeply rooted in the hearts of many car enthusiasts and we are shallow people for the most part, not the most technical. So when they change their design language, fans go up in arms.... I didn’t like it at first, but it’s growing on me quite okay, get it in Isle of Man Green, and you have a beauty! Bottom line, fans hate change, that’s the reason for all the fuss.

I like the front end of the car. I have trouble with the area above the rear wheel arches. Looks a bit dull there. I don't like how the rear window slightly stray upwards near the back end of it. Looks dull and makes the area between the wheel arches and the rear window too big. In that regard the M3 looks better. Really nice car though!
