      It’s a certain style. I don’t know how to best describe it, but I do it for my band. I think it’s called “frye screaming”. It’s like you overblow your vocal chords, bypassing them by blocking some structure along the way, and eventually making coherent pitches with some practice. I don’t even know if you would call it “singing”, but it has the effect of singing when you get it right.

      Agreed! Symbolic is my all-time favourite album. It's presented with the iconic main riff of the title track and EVERY Death fan knows the words "I don't mean to dwell, but I can't help myself..." Everyone sang along when I saw the tribute band last year!
      But the ending on Perennial Quest... way to fucking haunt my mind! Ending the album with a song about the journey of life, while the album started out with the innocence of youth.. damn Chuck! The guitars definitely wept during the outro!
      It's all too good music to remain unheard. So I'm happy Nuclear Blast persuaded him to release TSoP with Death before going with Control Denied.

    The Sound of Perseverance is such an interesting album. It is truly a masterpiece and was a progressive expansion on everything Chuck and the early death metal guys had been doing. But what is most interesting about it is when it came out. Death Metal had gotten popular and was doing new things. Trends were shifting and death metal was getting strongly influenced by hardcore/metalcore/whatevercore and screamo type shit. Chuck didn't go that direction, he represented a different path death metal could take continuing with the old influences.
    Chuck is way better than all that "new" death metal that lost all relationship with riffs, groove, dynamic structure, and in a lot of ways musicianship. As death metal became more robotic and generic (all for the sake of being "brutal"), Chuck made his music more melodic and dynamic and complex than ever...he didn't just release an album with 50 minutes of non-stop blast beats and step-on-cat-tail screams and comically "deep" growls with riffs that aren't even distinguishable. And for that I commend him.

    Legend has it that after being exposed to this much metal the vocalist went missing from the world. A millennia has passed and all have but forgotten until an excavation crew stumbled upon some old ruins. In the ruins was a shrine and upon it was Death itself. Not knowing what they had just unleashed shook them to the core as their heads started banging soon after. Soon after it spread across the entire universe and everyone thrashing and moshing suddenly questioned Death and he replied "I am Chuck" 🤘🏼🤘🏼

    I feel like Chuck was really into power metal when writing this album. So many swaying and gallant solos. It feels like a power metal album with death metal tones, themes and vocal work.

    • @BittersweetDuality
      @BittersweetDuality Před 8 měsíci

      This is verified by Gene Hoglan when it comes to the Symbolic era as well. According to what he said in an interview, the drum parts Chuck had in mind for that album would have practically made it a power metal record with death metal vocals, so Gene took creative liberties to put together the drum parts for the final product.
