“But then we just go to another technique. Yanno? You change lanes you don’t ram the car!”
Professor Roy Dean, you are the Bob Ross of Brazilian jiu jitsu. Soft spoken, composed, technical and gentle, but a true master of the craft.
And look, we have a happy little wrist lock right here.

Ha!
This is just gold. Mr. Dean, your technique and instruction are really outstanding. Thanks for sharing these pearls of wisdom.
getting the overhook, collar choke, collar choke variation, armlock, kimura, omoplata, overhook escape, mir lock, escape counter to back take, escape counter to triangle
It’s very strange , I’ve never been shown this by my professor but I have definitely used this in sparring
Thanks for showing the art.
What a fantastic Sensei you are, absolutely awesome
Thanks for sharing! I don’t overhook a ton, but I think I’m going to start playing this game.
Roy, just watched the over hook series! Fantastic vid. It’s so amazing how you work the techniques together. Please keep more vids coming, they’re really awesome! Again, thank you so much!
love the arm drag!
Great video. Your a wonderful teacher and just earned another subscriber!
This is a excellent teacher. I love how he teach!. Excellent Technics, excellent explained. Thanks is for the video!
Just love this peaceful way of teaching. Assist to a Roy Dean Class...bucket list. Oss!
Damn. This is fantastic!
awesome back take!
I love the sternum variation for that overhook choke and the arm drag when they retract the arm! Oss
always great detail. I use this grip a lot. This has helped open up some new options.
WOW. Awesome series. Thank you Roy Dean.
Absolutely love your tutorials/ videos! Wonderfully explained. They have been an absolute saviour for me in quarantine. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I actually applied this and it worked perfectly, the omoplata from overhook. Thanks so much!
This is great. I tend to get the overhook in guard particularly against opponents much bigger than me, so this is a great series for smaller guys in my opinion.
Obrigado por compartilhar amigo!
Tankyou for share friend!
professor is just amazing .love watching his flow.he is a bjj wizard.🧙♂
Thank you, Sir.
You are an excellent communicated and an awesome instructor this is an outstanding tutorial ..
Masterly done, thank you
this is another level of teaching. elegant and perfect. i would certainly watch all your videos.thanks
Great series, this is integral to my no-gi game. I just want to add, that when escaping the overhook you should post your free hand on the bicep of his free arm (per Saulo Ribeiro in University of Jiu Jitsu). When guys try to escape without posting on my arm, they seldom succeed.
Thank you as well, for all the philosophy and flow you've given me over the years.
Those bells are trippy.
Thank you! You know how to instruct!
Obrigado, mestre!
That cheeky little wrist lock, love it.
Good stuff... So many solid techiques in 15 mins. Pls share more!
Thanks for the insight, great instruction. That beeping is driving my absolutely insane though!
His voice makes me feel at ease
I discovered a really cool and effective sweep from the overhook position too! Makes them feel as if you are trying to set up the scissor sweep but you actually sweep them in the same direction as the arm you have the overhook on.... Great video!
Your channel is the best brother truly admirable !!
Alright.... Dude is unreal. Perfection of motion
Thank you Professor Dean amazing concepts and explanations… on the shoulder lock I was thinking that Frank Mir did a lock like one you explained and then you said it ,,, your insights are great !
Great video love your style
Thank you.
GENIUSSS MATERIAL..
Superb.
thank you.
I have no words
Very good thanks
Thank coach
This is really well instructed. It's a shame to say but my trainer could learn a lot from you Sir. He is a bit "hot headed " type.
Thanks for sharing this.
Change schools. Don't need that kind of teacher.
Kai Be some locations have only one option, unfortunately
Where you located?
Great stuff Roy. Solid strategy and great execution on breaking it down. Make sure you watch his white to black vids. It will help open up your possibilities on application. Stay hungry for knowledge...even more so now that we can't train due to COVID-19. OSS!!!
excelente mestre, oss
Them you Roy Dean whoever you are. I think I saw a vid of you testing for your black belt or something rolling back to back with various partners. Good stuff.
Wow been looking at this position last 6 months and there was a lot in here I was missing
Nice one bro
i don't care whatever people says but RD is a great BJJ teacher and I love his Technic. Thank you MAster for this video.
Why would somebody say differently?
Rochester92 Roy has a reputation for being a creeper and a pretty odd cat.
Roy Dean is awesome....he kinda reminds me of Steve Carall
Man i watched Roy dean as a white belt to watch his techniques. Now as a black belt im still watching his techniques but also to learn how he engages his class. I still get a little too pumped when teaching and get super loud. And a little nervous. The silence shows how engaged everybody is
Reminds me of the side guard series phil paljamar showed at his academy!
Very good the choke with gi.
Insane
When going for the omaplata if the bottom leg gets trapped a good option is carni or hazelett. Would love to attend a roy dean seminar some day 🤙🤙
That last triangle set up though
🙏
Hey Roy we need your lineage in Worcester Massachusetts.
Breaking the love hate founded by guard.
the best sensey
Thanks Roy. I like the overhook but I need to develop my technique. I get the choke the way you used to but I am looking forward to trying your variation. I am only a blue belt but I always try to encourage white belts to work with the overhook because they have a good control from which to work without having to be quick and slick ( which they are not ). It's not something that my professor teaches ( another good reason for using it because other guys don't and aren't used to defending it ).

Little pearls shown in this video
Roy Dean would do a great mafioso guy in a movie with De Niro, Joe Pesci and the like; a well-dressed hitman with heavy Italian-Jersey accent or a Capo in The Soprano series
Alex Drastico he does have that look
i like the way how he talks like a jiujitsu wizzard

come to las vegas open a school out here
You're spoiled for choice in Vegas as it is!
this is awesome instruction but when Roy passes the lapel to his left hand at 0:55 his fingers are inside. I didn't think you were permitted to have your grip inside. Is this ok to do? (New practitioner here)
You can have fingers in the lapel, just not in sleeves or the bottom of pants. That's a lesson I hope you don't learn the hard way my friend.
OSS!
Oh, basically a cross choke?
Love your content! Coachella, check it out if ya have not..
It's not better to pull the other guys hip? Instead of climb
In my opinion, it is.
It depends on the body type and style. A disadvantage of climbing is getting the second hook is difficult. If you pull the hip or arm pit into you, there is more room for a second hook attack. As someone mentioned it takes more strength to pull the hip though. Also the back climb opens to higher chance for the partner to scramble or to roll and try escape
