Philadelphia's mural arts program started in the 1980s as an anti-graffiti initiative under Mayor Wilson Goode. But founder Jane Golden took the idea far from its anti-graffiti roots.
Today, Mural Arts Philadelphia is a large public art organization that innovates through public and private funds. These murals increase property values, draw in tourists, and help employ the artists creating them. In addition to that, the public art can be a tool for communities to express themselves.
Famous Philadelphia murals have included works by Shepard Fairey, Keith Haring, Meg Saligman, and many others. That makes it a unique model of public art for cities around the world.

If you can't beat em, employ them.
I've been saying this for years. It's the best way to cut crime and vandalism. If you give artists something positive to do, they'll often jump at the chance to make art in a productive way!
yeah but art isn't always profitable. Glad it has worked out for these folks though!
Public art is like public education. Free art means our community is beautiful instead of ugly; free education means our community is smart(er) instead of ignorant. There's a rational self-interest in husbandry of your community.
MURAL of the Story is?
Aye! Emmet
This is the equivalent of instead of telling a kid to stop fighting, you tell them to be a boxer or do wrestling.
Seeing the potential of something positive in something negative.
James Burgess That's a mindset school system's should really have or in my case instead of aiding to our weaknesses, we should work on our strengths!
Growing up in Philly, I thought they were in every city, wow
Pigeof wow you're so lucky
Me too, I had no idea this was a "Philly thing"! 😊
It's alot near downtown Dallas
there are heaps in Melbourne in Australia..... i rhink its catching on everywhere, hell, I even paint them
There are murals in every city to some extent, but philly has the largest collection of them in the world--and by a fair margin, i think. So i guess the city of brotherly love is really the city of colorful walls.
Philly is so beautiful man. I drove around it at midnight when the city was sleepy, so beautiful... The cobblestone streets. The charmy narrow streets. The beauriful townhouses and the skyscrapers in the background over the townhouses... so beautiful and historic.
nothing in america is historic
Yup we have no history in our entire country. No wars or battles were fought here. The worlds most diverse nation nothing to see here Everything just appeared the way it is now. /s
I love their townhouses, it gives the city a certain charm.
+Bruni haha you're right man. I apologize for my dumb comment.
So you are saying that the
Revolutionary War
War of 1812
Mexican American War
Civil War
and Spanish American War
Were not in america
You guys need to do a video on the history of graffiti in Philly. Lots of cool people and history.
drink15 not many know about it. I agree that would be cool!
drink15 ko
Yea they actually show a karma tag in the video I think
Exactly. When people hear graffiti, they immediately think of NYC and not Philly. Time magazine in 1970 on its cover named Philly the graffiti capital of THE WORLD!
It was everywhere in the city in the 70s and 80s. Subways, and anything else that literally had a surface. I remember thinking that was normal until I moved to Baltimore back in the day! And was like they barely have any!
AGREED. Philly is the birthplace of graffitti
It's Always Artistic In Philadelphia
QB Mac Yes
Philly is rough but great city in general. The murals are what tie us together and connects us to establish our identity. I remember walking down the street and striking up a conversation with a man covered head to toe in paint with a big grin on his face. Mural arts employed him after he got out of prison and was happy to be given a second chance
Ryan D he was huffing the paint bro..
Exactly!!! Love my city.
Philly sounds awesome! I want to visit. Any place you'd recommend?
you wont be saying “great city” now. Cant live in philly without getting shot or mugged at least once
When you from philly and know where all these murals are at.
Intellectual Lifeform they don't exist here in the northeast. Also, all these murals are why I think of Wyoming as the colorful neighborhood
Northeast philly doesn't need them. You already have large residential homes, lawns and trees. There is really no need.
Caprice Dutton I agree with you east of Cottman. After that, there should be some murals because the area between the creek and Cottman is dying fast. It becomes really noticeable after Cheltenham av
I think people often underestimate artist's respect for others' art. Most graffiti artists are still artists who at the end of the day recognize and appreciate the skillful execution of their craft (in this case painting). Of course there's always gonna be 'THAT guy' who just wants to screw with everyone, but the murals' effectiveness at deterring graffiti really doesn't surprise me one bit.
They gotta respect the amount of work that goes into getting just one of these completed.
We don't need another billboard, wee need more murals!!
YES LET'S ALL VANDALIZE BILLBOARDS INTO MURALS DESTROY CAPITALISM
3:27 so much effort went into that masking ♥
Lol, that's some easy roto work.
@@boulderarchitect Yeah I’d say so too, it’s a nice idea though and it looks pretty flawless :)
This video is cool, but it makes it seem like the Mural Arts program is responsible for all of the art in Philadelphia, when in reality, Philadelphia has always been an art-centric city.
But they are the reason why there are murals in the neighborhoods that most are afraid to go to.
true
Anyone else thinks it's adorable that no one graffitied the beautiful morals. It just proves that not every person who does graffiti is just a "thug" like people have been believed to think through movies and etc.. it proves that the people doing the graffiti appreciate art and see what their doing as art and do not want to cover up art.
proud person of Philly!
Black Dandelion
Me too!!
Philly is my favorite city!
Love this! I wish more cities would consider creative solutions like this, to make their cities more beautiful.
It's awesome, cost effective and unique.
This is why I'm happy that I'm from Philly. There's nothing plain/dull about Philadelphia.
I'm from Philly and I instantly recognizef the thumbnail and most of the murals in here
Phillip Bullock Same! I got deja vu
Phillip Bullock
Same! I drive past that mural every day for college
Phillip Bullock same here!
Phillip Bullock right I ride past the mural in the thumbnail everyday
I live in Chicago now, but I grew up in Philly and I recognize a LOT of them.
From what I understand the reason graffiti writers don't defame murals is the graffiti artist in Philly see it as an unspoken rules ie. never write on murals I mean that's what my graffiti teacher taught me lol.
And also it just looks dope why defame it.
Semoske Games some people who live in those areas are afraid of gentrification, in which higher markets would force them to move out since they couldn't afford to live there anymore.
if the mular is big no problem with doing a throw or whatever at the bottom. if they get space we get space
@@Galanonim022 incorrect.
Please make a follow up video where you speak to the artists and to the neighbors who enjoy their work. That would be cool.
Also, I'm concerned about spinning the marketing of "The Mural Lofts" as community development rather than plain old gentrification. What is the point of raising property values if it pushes out the people who already live in the area? :/
The woman speaking at the end is a hero, and what she said in the end is so inspirational.
Short answer: Philadelphia is the best.
Long answer: p h i l a d e l p h i a i s t h e b e s t
there's really no other way to put it..
Mostly filled of trash people..
I use to live about 10 years in north and south...
You won't understand
TheDragonfriday You lived in the north, that's your problem. That city is trying to move in the right direction, stop putting it down.
Diimes I love Philly, also the most passionate sports town out there
N Y C I S B E T T E R
NYC is over packed and dirty. Philly is dirty, but at least I have space to maneuver around the broken needles and bums
I grew up outside of Philly, it's a crazy city.
Thank you guys so much for making this video!!! I'm a philly transplant and hands down the murals are my favorite part of the city! The ones along the el are the best they're the "love letter" ones
Yes ma'am😊
Philly's murals are nice for photo shoots
I was in Philadelphia this weekend (left three hours ago) and was wondering about this! Good timing! ahaha
A terrific and hopeful story--beauty and creativity are the antidote to blight.
How do I bring this video to the attention of the people in the administration of Chicago who need to see it? Mine is already a beautiful city, but this is one of those cases where more is better. And this addresses other urban problems, too.
Wow, those murals are beautiful! Good on you Philly!
Philadelphia is a city of art! It's only natural that art flow into the streets.
Boston or D.C.? Ehhh, not so much.
NYC >_>
NYC is trash
ARVIN, NYC is the city of art for the bourgeoisie; where art is good because it is popular. The art scene there is a gilded, simulated romp for the upperclass. To be sure, there are artists in NYC with authenticity- who struggle against the current. Philly on the other hand is accessible, inclusive, and vibrant. Take the murals for example- we have murals in Rittenhouse and Manayunk as well as South Philly and Kensington. If you can't pay for a guided tour we have interactive maps and signs with relevant information scattered throughout the city. When these murals are being planned the community they will be painted in are given a space to speak about what is relevant/provoking to them. And the Mural Arts program is one of MANY art programs this city helps in part to run. So excuse me when I roll my eyes at the notion that NYC is the city of art for the entire East Coast.
True! Hopefully we can change that!
Art is the single most overrated thing in the history of things
Well done. It's about time Philly gets recognized for its awesome mural campaign!
Alright! A video about my city!
We've lost so many murals recently because of construction.
Now you can build better replacements
Daniel Robinson Fair enough. I just miss a few of them that I loved.
Change is good, we need to upgrade the city. They will paint more.
Clacci38 Change is mostly good but with that logic why bother putting time and effort into them if they are just gonna destroy them anyway?
***** If you moved into an existing house and didn't have one built you've done nothing wrong.
I wish your almanac videos where about twice as long. I love them.
Please make a video about Venezuela
Bladen Martin good idea
Bladen Martin What, the canals? Or MOSE?
Saw a theory on the internet
Here it goes :
It was recently discovered that Venezuela had the largest oil reserves of any country , even more than Saudi Arabia
And only recently have Venezuela's problem started and it has not been able to export that oil.
Now who is to get hurt if Venezuela gets back on track and starts exporting that oil.
That's right Saudi Arabia
Saw this on the internet
Hand it off to 4chan, those autists will take it under their wings and uncover different narratives.
This makes me homesick, can't wait to come back
Apparently the whale mural is being torn down and I'm gutted
Lucy Q. We cant wait to have u back, either! 😁 travel well.
Lucy Q I was looking for it when I was on the expressway and it wansnt there 😭😭😭
Same, I miss home! 😢
I loved growing up in philadelphia. The mural arts program came to our school and allowed us to participate in making their beautiful mural on the side of our school. It was a great experience.
Like the original biblical Philadelphia, we don't have a wall to keep people out, so we use them as idealogical shrines.
I live in Philadelphia and I always see them all the time, but I never really thought about it. It is interesting to see the reason behind why they have so many of them in the city.
lol why the dislikes? There are a lot of reasons to hate vox videos but this one is pretty cool!
Uncanny Valley
Playing some b-ball outside of the school.
SkeleCrafter then a couple of guys, they were up to no good
started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said -"you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Aire"- "I'm enrolling you in the mural arts program so you'll have an outlet for your pent up aggression and teenage angst."
dobraf lmfao whyyyyy
It's crazy how much I took murals for granted growing up in Philly. Like seeing the Common Threads mural in the first frame of the video filled me with nostalgia as I remembered seeing it every single day as I walked down Spring Garden to the BSL after school. I go to school in DC now, and sure it's a beautiful and fairly artsy city, but it just can't touch the vibrancy of MY CITY ❤️
Absolutely amazing video and direction. Videos like this is why I love your channel!
This is absolutely amazing. Applause for Vox for also not bringing politics into it. They walked a fine line between the public and private sector funding, but ultimately, they made someone as fiscally libertarian like me convinced that we need publicly funding murals in my city.
Art is very political though.
The editing of this video was fantastic. Well done.
This program is *excellent*!! Some of the neighborhood murals were painted by the residents in the community. The one I know of is a mural of the residents on the block. Sends a strong message when a child comes out to play and can see a beautiful mural of themselves that they actually painted. Jane Golden is the best!!!
vox: always answering the questions no one ever asked
Montréal is full of murals too, glad to see another city with great murals.
I see them everywhere, they are beautiful
Murals are some of my favorite pieces of art. You find some of the best murals in the 'roughest' neighborhoods. It brings beauty to them. Having people from those places express themselves through art is truly beautiful.
One of the many reason I love living in this city.
Exactly!!, Thank you for the job well done, peace and love, Doug.
Your videos are great. Keep it up.
The history and research behind this video is awesome! I want to visit the city now :)
As a Philadelphian , I loved this Must see these in person . I've lived here all my life andI still get stuck and stare while driving at these beautiful pieces of art
great program. great work.
Awesome. i am a full time muralist too and have started videos over the last year. great angle on the focus! really awesome!
WHERE ARE MY PHILLY PEOPLE?!?
Burnt Socks HERE
Burnt Socks here
Here
I love passing by the murals at the Wissahickon Septa train stop
I know the one artist Meg Saligman . She and her husband had a boat right next to ours quite a few years ago. They are both extremely Pleasant and also very intelligent people. They were a pleasure to have as Neighbors on the dock. I even had the pleasure to go up on the scaffold as Meg was painting one of her murals. She was very surprised to see me climb up on the scaffold unannounced. LOL . She went on to explain to me how the layout was done. I was very impressed. Nice people
What a picturesque video Vox. Wow!
I love murals. I think it's a great way to have some art on the side of a boring building, bring some life to it.
I've never been to Philly. But I would love to see the murals and reading the comments, it sounds beautiful!
This is a great video. A fascinating tour of a phenomenon I didn't know anything about. I'm glad Vox isn't chained to doing Big Views videos only.
lol I thought that all cities had this many murals
This is so true. I live in center city Philadelphia and see murals everyday. It's super awesome! Also common threads is right across from my temple!!
Philadelphia Freedom 🇺🇸 I never knew Philly had thousands of murals! I'm from the West coast, but this is so cool to see. Much love and respect 🙏🏻
when I used to go to CCP (Community College of Philadelphia) I always admired Common Threads (first mural in the video). Amazing work of Art.
"Isn't that what art does, it shines a light on diversity, but lifts up our commonality, and in the end connects us to all that makes us human." Perfect way to sum it up
I wonder if this same concept would work in Detroit.
Philadelphia is a artists paradise.🎨
i drive past that mural all the time. Philadelphia recently started a thing to make series of murals all throughout Philadelphia. it's pretty incredible.
The uplifting power of city street murals, its start in Philadelphia and why art should not be restricted to museums or private galleries. Thank you for making this video.
Loool I always grew up seeing the art in Philly but never knew why there were so many
genius never thought bout like that !!!!!! we need more from the few we got in htown
The featured mural in this piece is down the block from where I used to live. I still pass it all the time and think it is beautiful. Philly is an amazing city it has more and better art and history than most US cities. What also makes it is that it filled with down to earth , good people. If you come take the mural tour.
I went to Philly this weekend, it's such a lovely city!!!
This is so cool--inspirational stuff
Being in the Mural Arts program in Middle School was the best. I remember we painted a Mural on the wall near the office of the school.
Glad I live in this beautiful city
Philly is the mural capital of the world. Over 4,000 murals and growing
This is how you do art right, you make it for everyone and you use it to make the world a more interesting place. Good job Philly!
Murals are a display of localized culture. Unique to the area.
AYYYYEEEE PHILY ITS MY HOME!!!!
This video is the truth. I was talking to one of the artists that was working on the Richard Allen mural at 3801 Market st., which has a deep historic and cultural connection to the AME church, he was telling me how he didn't know the direction his life was going in until he applied to the mural arts program. He didn't even finish high school but his art changed his life. You have to be very talented to even be considered for the program. Respect.
Lol I live in northeast philly which is like a whole different city so I didnt see lots of these until I became a teen lol
Alpha a there are some in somerton near churches.
fluffkin rawr I live in Somerton and found none.
Alpha a I have seen these since I was 4 and I live in the Northeast. It might have to do with hwo much my family had to travel through Philly though
I want to see a mural timelaps
im actually very proud of this too about my city. philly murals
Awesome video. What a cool lady; she's got a great outlook!
Great video and a great city
Plsss come to Indianapolis we need it badly!
That last sentence was amazing by Jane Golden!
Loved it! I miss living in philly
I used to live in Williamsport, a few hours away from Philly. I saw pictures of it and always wanted to go, but we moved to Massachusetts. One of the things I remember of Williamsport is a mural on the opposite side of this.. theater, for live events like a magic show or some stuff.
Yes, more art is always nice ^^
Shoutout to my city
I'm from Philly and learned a lot about my city that I never knew I needed to know.
this is proof that with an open mind a person can turn a negative into a positive as long as they are understanding and honest
I love this soooo much
so proud to be from Philly
Brick Lane in London also had great murals. I took a free walking tour of Brick Lane and it was one of the best walking tour I've done throughout Europe.
Not to take away from the content, but whoever animates these vids jeez :P really well done
