- Ever wondered how much software engineers make at Google? In this video, I share exactly what a Google Software Engineer salary is and how it's broken down, looking at real figures (including my original offer from Google) to answer the oh-so-important question of: how much do Google Software Engineers really make?

I have a decision to make soon, and this video on the multiple components of tech salaries is just what I’m looking for! Excellent work and thank you!!!
Keep doing what you are doing. This was definitely needed. I'm definitely subscribing
Very appreciated. Please talk about the non-official compensation!
Will do!
Liking this comment means that I am also interested in knowing this info as well!
what is this?
Your candor is well appreciated! I work in info sec and guest lecture at a local community college once a semester on employment opportunities and outlook in the tech sector and a brutally honest career timeline from my first job (30+ years ago, bagger at a grocery, $1.85 per hour, fired after 30 days) to working as a info sec professional today doing much better despite some career mis-steps. I will be including this video and others on your experiences as materials for the students to consider. There seems to be a deficit of out-reach from the tech industry to the potential labor pool in plain language that lays out the opportunities and realities of what it means to work in tech.
Well done!
I recently subscribed and have been binging your videos. Bless you and your account!
I still remember asking you to make that video, and you delivered. What a man
L4 TC is 255k of which 150k are basic salary and in Cali is taxed 38%, means you take home in your pcket a bit more than 90k a year
This was the best video! Thanks mate!
Clement: IF you're interested
Me: Duuuhhhhh, we're talking money here
You made my day man!!!
Thank you for keeping it real and explaining in depth
Man!!!! Thank you sir!!! You’re so inspirational!!!
of course we all scroll down to find when the real thing we all came here for happens.
Thanks for the content! You are the most sincere person I have ever met
wow. this was an eye opener. thanks
Great video! Quick question most of the companies I’ve been to small- mid size offer stock options. But you have the option to PURCHASE it. At large companies are you saying you’re justgiven the stocks?
Important to note that at Google the frequency your GSUs vest at depends on the number you receive. More GSUs = more frequent, and the tiers are Annually, Semi-Annually, Quarterly, and Monthly.
Thanks for the great vid! :)
You are a hero pal, good work! I wish all those money for you, use them well!
Hry, can you make a video explaining what work conditions did you experience at google (hours per day, if u could work from home etc).. Thanks in advance
Nice vid idea
they generally dont have a strict work hour culture, if you finish your work you're usually free to go. they value efficiency over long, meaningless hours
9:10 for the main salary part :)
Yes, when we look back on our decisions there are often ‘should haves.’ Nice studio tan.
Thank you very much for explaining what it all means, like the stock grants and bonuses. To the point.
Great video! Liked and subbed!
Would love it if you made another video about the kind of expenses these big companies cover as you mentioned around 7:45
Will do!
Thanks for the amazing content..!
This channel is great. Keep showing how software engineering works in real world.
Please make a video about the non-official subsidies that you mentioned!! :)
Will do!
Software Engineer's Salary majorly depends on the following factors: 👇
1. Your Level of Experience
2. Area of Expertise
3. Your last compensation
4. Your country
5. Your negotiation skills ✅
6. Other offers your have ;)
Among these, the most important part is the negotiation.
😎 *"Negotiating Salary is an Art"* , prepare yourself well enough before discussing this.
Also planning to make a video covering it soon.
All the best, may the $$$$$ be with you! 👍
Agreed 4th point.
BTW, Hi from India only.
Also, your new video about Microsoft job was very nice.
Money is the worst thing I've ever found in my life
Interesting. In California, it is illegal to ask for a candidate's previous compensation, so armed with this knowledge and how to handle the "what salary do you desire" question, I feel like you can minimize the effect of your last compensation. What do you guys think?
How do equity refreshes work? For staff engineer level, large proportion of the comp is in equity, so if they didnt earn the refresh then their comp wont be competitive. Do google give no refrshes to low performer and provide loads to high performer to select only the high performers?
Okay, now I understand why all of the Silicon Valley software firms have an office in Hyderabad, India. My friends there have told me that they generally make less than 10% of what US based SWE's get. But, that they live quite well on that 10% as things are comparatively cheaper in Hyderabad. Also, some but not all Hyderabad SWE companies will transport their people from home to work just because traffic is so horrible in the city at certain times. Thanks for this info.
Excellent video as always Clement! yes please, I'm sure we would like to hear more about the food and other perks.
What was your L4 breakdown?
nice video sir .. just now i sub.. thank u
👍
The Techlead says his salary at facebook was $250 k + $250 K for stocks and other things. That is total $500k range, fb and google may have the same salary ranges. Anyway your video is excellent and clears most of the doubts about salary structure in big tech companies like google.
can you make a video of how to do well on the job and what could someone do in college now to boost their performance when they get the job?
Already have something on how to do well on the job coming out very soon! And good idea for the second thing; will try to come up with something!
Hi Clément, I believe it would be interesting to make a video about life cost at SF and other tech poles
Agreed
Nice vid idea
hey, great video, just wanna ask: are these salaries pre-tax or post-tax?
What a stupid question
Thanks a lot, Sir..:)
Hey, I’ve just started python two months ago. I’ve created two projects, both are GUIs that do things like build sentences from entering info in certain fields, they display my knowledge of the basics to include functions, variables, lists, dictionaries, and so on. I’m looking to apply to a few internships next summer, these internships are geared towards beginners (freshman/sophomores) with programming classes and interest in software engineering. I am working o a 3rd larger project, these projects I’m pushing to GitHub in the next few weeks, I’m adding the last finishing touches. Do you think these are good projects to have as I apply, since i have to add my github to the application? If so, what else can help. If not, what would be something else to add. Please, this is open for anyone to answer (preferably clement).😉 Also, what are the things senior engineers, recruiters look for in the early programmers looking to intern at these companies.
What kind of roles does only apply for after law school? How're the different from a person just attending the tech school or coding bootcamp?

Nice informative video man, keep it up.
BTW how is your job going on at Facebook?
Can you share anything about it, if it's not in NDA?
🙂🙋♂️
Awesome vid!
Thanks!
Nice info. 👍
Very fluently explained 🤗🤗
I've got a question, with so many employees coming in/out, how do you avoid them running out of stocks?
Are these class A stocks they just buy in the market to give you?
How do they give it to you (which platforms do they use)?
Because in the beginning I thought they'd give you a bonus ($) based on the stock price, meaning they're giving you stocks symbolically, not literally.
But you obviously corrected that right now so 🤔
Januario Pinto they create new shares each year and give them to employees. The number of total Google shares is constantly increasing.
It's a ponzi, and we should get in on it.
Here in Israel, those big companies still offer the best compensation plans, considering that all the rest are mostly small startups.
But the funny (or not) thing is that compared to the cost of living here (we're one of the most expensive countries in Asia - think Tokyo expensive)
and the fact that 40% of our salary is taken off by the government (due to high defense expenses) we're left with not that much...
Think that yourbase salary at Google as L3 is the on the range of what L5 makes here (before the aforementioned taxes)....yes...
So that's the reason why the successful programmers here relocate to the US at some point - it's a problem called "the brain evasion", and we're planning on leaving the country in the next two years for those exact reasons.
SunoftheCakes more colloquially called the “brain drain”
Israel should disappear
How do you convert that stock to money though ?? Is it accessible at any time ?? Also is it common to get promoted to L4 in a 2-3 year span like you did ??
I was waiting for your new trick since your last video
😂I hope it didn't disappoint!
very very appreciated non official compensation
I was hoping you to do the card tricks with the cash in the intro
How long would you say it takes to move from one level to the next?
About 2-3 years to move from L3 to L4
hey clem , i have one doubt that these big companies like google , Facebook etc . Does really degree matters to get job into it ??
ashutosh patil honestly I’m pretty sure I heard something somewhere where executives from company nearly all of them said gpa is a waste of time and they don’t give jobs because of they atleast that’s the future so I’m pretty sure no
Best intro ever:
"Oh, I'll wait for you to smash the like button"
Hi Clement! Is there a place on the internet where I can see data as accurate as the one you showed us, but for Europe for example. Thank you!
Unfortunately, unless the website I showed has data for Europe, not that I know of.
You can try Glassdoor, although the accuracy of the compensation mechanism is not great as it has to fit all possible types of companies. I confirm it's exactly the same compensation mechanism at Microsoft in Europe, except for free food (you just get free snacks, drinks, sandwiches or sweets) and significantly lower overall amounts due to location / costs of living, but still pretty good
yep check Glassdoor.
TC are lower everywhere in Europe compared to USA except Zurich, afaik in Zurich gross salaries are similar to Bay Area but with lower taxes.
Also e.g. FANGs salaries are considered mediocre in London, while fintech and investment banking companies in UK pay software engineers way more than FANGs, easily a 50% more
Haha You're a trip Clement, too funny man, je t'aime!
When do we get to see "The day in the life of Clemènt as a software engineer" video?
Coming soon to a CZcams channel near you!
@@clem its out now
it would be too hedonistic for CZcams hahaha. fan of Clement here.
Hi there ! I am very interested in working at google in the bay area when I finish my computer engineering degree but I am scared of one thing and it's that I don't live in the USA so how difficult can it be for me to get there ? thanks !
No no no problem , whay? Because when you pass the phone interview for any big tech companies then they will giv you all things you need, flight , hotel , food , all these things they'll giv you to complete the reall interview in them company immediately they give VISA and yeah good luck for you with them .
I work with COBOL and PL1(like COBOL). Statements are like A + 3 = B . Move field A to field B. if then statements. It is decent salary like 60K to 90K
"Some of you might have even skipped ahead. I guess in which case you are not hearing me talk right now..." Hilarious!
I'm going the college route for coding. I just started learning c++ and I find it easy to catch on.
How much did you learn in 6 months? Did you only learn 1 language? If you cut out all the other bullshit classes I can see how you can learn to code well in 6 months. But, going the college route you have to take so many extra classes that take time away from coding.
Can you go over the dental and health care coverage at Google?
Yes, please talk about the extra compensations.
Bro is legit. Subscribed
that magic trick at the beginning was great ngl
Can I apply as a software engineer and when I pass it told him I want to work as a data scientist , or applying for specific position¿ g
Probably not two very different interviews. What you can do is apply as a software engineer, work as a software engineer for like 6 months, and internally transfer to data science. However, even that might require an interview.
How many hours did you work per week on average?
I heard somewhere to get top 5% richest in the uk you need 75000 a year so I’m looking around there to make my life easier haha lmao it’s going to be hard but I have high expectations but I’m at the top of all my classes
Right now 40
This is a great video. But how about taxes and other charges on the salary? In short is it a net salary or gross?
It’s gross salary. Taxes are about 30 to 40%
Hi Clement!
QQ - do you get to keep the stocks if you leave before the 4 years? Or before the first year?
Thanks.
You keep whatever stocks are vested. If 25% of the stocks are vested, you get 25%.
@@B3Band Thank you!
I hit the like specifically because of your candor. Most people tip toe around what they actually make. That doesn't help much because we are still left with a bit of ambiguity. I think that people leave it off because they think they can't discuss it but when people do discuss their salary, it encourages the employees to know their worth and get a better salary rather than being bitter about someone making more than them. I applaud your success and thank you for encouraging and helping others to achieve what you have.
Really love hearing this, and thank you for the kind words!
So an entry level software engineer in Google makes around 180000 dollars per year in Bay Area or NYC. But how much taxes does he need to pay? (I'm Korean but considering to find a job as a software engineer in United States years later.)
Hey Clem,
Are you a full stack dev?
How much do new phd grad make at google?
Is there any diferences between the salary of machine learning engineer and someone who studied art (industrial designer) at same level in these companies?
With same number of years experience
Hey so how long did it take for the promotion? How did you prepare or know you were ready to become a mid level engineer?
I second the question
It took me a little less than 1.5 years. And I've got a video planned on a topic very similar to this; stay tuned!
0:23 Hey you there scrolling through the comment section, Clement's still waiting for you to smash that like button.
I smashed the like button. It was worthy.
I really like this guy
How do you balance these figures with Cost of Living? For example, I make 120k but my cost of living makes that really around 80k. Is there a huge cost of living difference as far as salary at Google and other not FANG tech companies?
Where do u live?
thanks, bro.. I appreciate it...
Great content
Anybody know the salary at the Google in the Europe? I cannot find this information on the web
Very helpful...
the Google stocks, do they pay dividends ? how much ?
Can I just check something!! In the video you said you started to learn code 6 months before stating google? So you learnt enough to then secure a job at google? How on earth did you do that?
"Lived and breathed code"
he's a math major from an ivy league. that means he can pick up new info much faster than most people. for a regular person it would take at least 2 years to get to a level where they can compete for these kinds of jobs. and that's 6+ hours a day for 2 years...
So you only had the 6 months experience and you applied to work for google? And started out making that much? So do they teach you more? What would be the vest route to go for a teenager that is interested in this?
Were you a javascript developer at google?
Are you able to sell your shares right after you get them and put the money in the bank or will that be a bad thing to do?
You can sell right away..there is no stigma for do it
do I need a bachelors degree for the internship
Nice video.
I would like to thank you for your effort to make such kind of useful video.I am student of 5th sem.l am familiar with C,C++,JSE,JEE,DATA STRUCTURE and PYTHON.
Please tell me that how can I get a way to work in google as software developer?
Be able to work 70-80 hours a week...
Coloca a legenda em português igual tem no vídeo dos benefícios do Google por favor 🙏🙏 eu não falo inglês e as legendas ajudam muito .
How did you apply for google?
Does they got stock for the time they work in company or there is certain fixed years for stock
U get an amount that is divided out into 4 years and given to you every 3 months
Are the money from stocks also taxed ? Or it is just the base salary and the bonus who are being taxed ?
Every thing is taxed EVERYTHING smh
Your Intros are fuckin amazing
How many shares would you negotiate if you were a staff engineer and at Google for 8 years?
Hey, that's kinda how much I bill my clients. But I work for this consulting company that pockets 66% of it...
they pocket way too much
