The argument about the "real world" being better. There is actually a huge disadvantage of those panoramas with poles, especially in garages, where Tesla vision is the only thing to be able to prevent side impacts while parking.
I think all 3 systems (Panorama, Parking Sensors, Tvision) have their advantage and their disadvantage.

The VW tech (Skoda, Cupra, etc) with advanced park assist is able to eliminate side collisions using the US sensors. While there are none directly in the middle of the car, they have a sideways set of sensors in rear and front bumpers which pickup obstacles on the go. Depending on steering angle and speed the system calculates the relative position to the obstacle previously registered and will emergency brake as well as give audible and visible feedback. 14:09 I don't know the parking rules in Norway, but here in Denmark that parking would definitely be illegal too.
In Denmark all of the tire has to be inside the inner edge of the white line of marked parking spots.
However, on the much wider lines used for road edge parking parallel to the road, it is allowed to also park ON the line, but the outer edge of the tire still has to be inside the outer edge of the line.
But in regular parking spots with narrow line like this, the tires aren't even allowed to touch the lines at all but has to be completely inside the lines.

I'm all for simplifying production and remove redundant systems, but then again they added a IMO silly screen in the rear seat for Highland and those LED lights I am less and less a fan of as I age. Karpathy's presentation on autonomy day actually made me think FSD was possible, the last year or so has almost convinced me until we again heard the data was improved for some regions and some influencers were getting better data/treatment and thus better FSD results ( I know this isn't FSD) . On finding the parallel parking , or backing up locations . Was not being slow it just detects them way more so when you are just past the location . It’s meant for you to pull up to be ready to parallel park which it will at that point highlight the spot . I watched right before the 13:08 mark as you were looking for the spot to show up . I’m thinking , pull up right to where you need to start to parallel park and it will show right up , which it did . Its not meant more so to locate these spots before you get to them .

Everyone likes to make fun of Tesla, which is well justified before this new Tesla vision autopark update. It used to be so bad comparing to BMW, Audi and Mercedes’s offering. But as someone who uses 2024 Q8 Etron daily (and Tesla a few times a week), this new update has made the autopark feature far surpassed the old ultrasonic version and also far surpassed those German car’s offering, probably unmatched by everyone else in the US market. Now I use Tesla’s autopark every time when I park in parallel or perpendicular and it does a perfect job almost every time. Audi’s offering is hard to trigger and can be used in far fewer scenarios. I tried BMW’s latest offering, it is a bit better than Audi, but still in the same level. Tesla’s one is on the next level now. It is actually being useful. This is not something you can get from a test video, even from someone I highly respect. Also in first failure of his video, he purposely chose a wrongly detected spot, which is never an actual use case when he has multiple good spots he could choose from. I have parked into similar parallel parking spots before and I don’t have the similar problem here in the video. It might be the model is not well trained for Europe road and being too conservative, or maybe the software version in his car has a regression on this parking scenario - this is one real downside for Tesla’s ADAS and general softwares. It could get worse on certain things in some seemingly minor updates. They may eventually get fixed, but can be annoying

  • @mert5047

Randomness is not weird at all. Tesla is using computer vision, where a deep learning model is taking as input the image (e.g. 720x720 table of RGB values) and possibly depth information. That is fed through a deep neural network which then also predicts what is the probability of this being a parking spot. The decision to mark it as a spot will have a threshold: e.g. if probability is higher than 0.8, mark it as a spot. This threshold is either set manually or also learned from data. It is possible that the model's image input was somehow misclassified as a spot in that particular angle.

A person looking at the screen would know that that is not a parking space so would not have chosen there . A person has to physically choose the spot to park . The software will over time be better programmed to know what is not a valid parking spot

Doesn't seem to recognize the parallel parking spots correctly because they are very narrow, you can clearly see on the car that the box is wider than the actual spot because it expect a minimum width to be able to park into (I think it's more tailored to the more wide US parking spots width) but when used in parking spots of bigger size it works perfectly fine.

You should read the manual how to use the parking assistant. It says you first need to drive and pass the parking spot with a maximum speed and if the parking spot is behind the car then you should start the parking procedure. With the new vision it can probably also recognize the parking spots in front of the car but then it is maybe not that accurate. But in your test it worked quite well as soon as multiple cameras detected the spot. So maybe you need to give the car a chance to see it with more then one camera if you want the parking to be more accurate. It is maybe comparable if you close one eye and try to park your car. It will work somehow but the distance guessing is much more accurate with more than one eye 😉

Hi Bjorn, not sure if it is the same in Norway as in Sweden? But I am from the UK and live in Sweden. In the UK most people reverse in to parking spaces as arguably it easier as you have more flexibility with steering angle and easier when pulling out from a parking spot, especially in a shopping centre carpark. However I have found over the years in Sweden most people go forward in to a parking space and I have had many a crossword when trying to reverse in to a space and I get the dumb face of how did I know you were reversing in to that space. “Clue the reverse lights give it away”.😡. My point is that it seems as with most cars inc Tesla that the systems seem to work better by reversing into the parking space rather than the car going in forwards. Let’s see how much arguments that causes in Sweden. 🤣🤣

On a scale from 1-10 I would give it two different values. For parallel a max of 3-4, but for the boxes a 5-6. I do need need either. I had autoparking on my old Mercedes from 2017 (which worked perfectly) but used it maybe 3-4 times for show. Did not even buy it for the Tesla, because I am old-fashioned: if one cannot park, one should not drive.😂

So whoever thinks "this will be fixed through a software update". Be careful about this hope, because it might not come true.

The foundation is laid no other companies is doing auto parking with only neural nets and can be updated over the air (Many automotive manufacturers do not develop their parking assistance systems themselves: instead, they integrate systems sourced from specialized suppliers into their cars and cannot be updated.). It will be interesting to see how it performs in one year.

To be just: we know it, but a computer system would probably require to have the triangles between the park positions crossed out to identify them as non-parking positions.
On the other hand: maybe in the future Tesla might teach their SW to require parallel borders, or sufficient room for the whole car.

Hence why they had to figure out some other way to picture car in space so it doesn't violate the patent. Don't take my word for it though 😅
