      Hi, I remember the winter of 1962/3. Snow drifts 20 feet deep in places. People used to know how to cope back then. Now, as others have said, two snowflakes and it all grinds to a halt. I still know how to drive in snow, many I see do not these days.

    Nice!
    And for all of the people who don't know....a RWD with proper winter tires is way safer and better than a AWD on summer tires....when driving in winter conditions.
    Proper winter tires depends on your kind of winter.

      @Pitmairen Před 9 měsíci +14

      Even when both the RWD and the AWD has proper winter tires, the RWD is a lot safer in winter condition. There are good statistics on this, It's up to 40% higher chance of crashing in a AWD in bad conditions. The reason is probably that the AWD masks the condition causing the driver to drive too fast for the conditions.

    My first real winter experience with the Model Y RWD BYD (Giga Berlin produced). I've had it for ~6 months now.
    The RWD is both fun and efficient when driving in snowy winter conditions. You have a slight oversteer which is fun. The traction control system corrects the car immediately, however, so it never feels on the limit. I would have appreciated a winter mode that allowed more oversteer.
    In winter time at -5 and up it really takes a toll on the range big times. You barely get 200 km which is not really good if you live up north and going on longer trips. I wonder if the BYD blade batteries are worse in colder conditions compared to the LR Tesla versions. Tesla states a 455 km WLTP for the RWD. If I barely get 200 km in -8 it means more than a 50% drop in range. To hit the 455 WLTP I would need a consumption of ~1,3kWh/10km. But in -10 degrees it consumes around 2,5-3,5kWh which seems a bit high if I compare to friends who drive LR/Performance versions of Model Y. This is my personal gut feeling. Maybe @Björn this is something you could test.
    One winter flaw I have noticed is that when you activate the cruise control the software automatically sets the windscreen wipers to Auto mode. That tells me the software devs have never driven a frozen car in real winter conditions. The last thing you want is the windscreen wipers to activate. Either you ruin the wipers since they might be frozen or you ruin the sight as it smears out dirt all over the windshield. But most of the time both. They need to enable the option to NOT automatically enable wiper just because using the cruise control.
    Another winter design issue is the area behind the rear window. If you warm the car after a heavy snow fall it will melt the snow which will accumulate on the very rear as there is no natural way for the water to drain off the tailgate. The result is a huge lump of ice causing the tailgate not being able to open by itself because it is too heavy. You have to run out after snowfall to wipe the snow off before turning on the heat to avoid..
    But overall I'm still very satisfied with the Model Y 2023 RWD. Every car has it flaws and Model Y still so far has very few

    Huge thanks for all the testing that you do. What i appreciate the most is the driving in dark conditions so you actually get to see how the lights are on the cars. It is an important part (at least for me) of cars as it relates to safety. Almost no other testers ive seen even mentions this feature, other than if it looks good or not. Sure, cool lights are always nice but they need to function properly as well. Who cares about cool lights if you dont see a moose or a reindeer etc untill it is 5 metres in front of the car. I also see some mention RWD vs AWD. AWD is more practical if you often have adverse conditions on the roads you drive on, although RWD EVs are better than normal RWD cars due to more weight on the rear tires. AWD does not mean total control and grip of the car no matter the conditions, it is still up to us as drivers to go at appropriate speeds :)

    Service mode in winter, only those who live in true winter conditions know it works the best. Had one car with heated windscreen, it kind of works but the wires in the window are not that efficient and use a lot of extra energy , not sure how it's in newer Teslas, but in extreme conditions gravity is your best friend, snow goes down and in service mode the wipers are up so they are much easier to clean as long as you blast warm air on the windshield and the same energy is also used to warm up the cabin so overall more efficient.

  • @Tomaskom

    AWD cars have better traction and get going easier than RWD/FWD... The downside is people in those sometimes get overconfident and might even end up in the ditch more often 😀They simply forget AWD gives you no advantage with turning or braking (only regen behaves nicer, but emergency braking distance is the same).

    • @Frygisk
      @Frygisk Před 9 měsíci +1

      The problem is the drivers as you are saying. People get scared when the car slips and end up braking and overcorrecting when they should throttle like Bjørn did here. The antispin reduces power to the wheels to find traction, it does not add power.

    • @Tomaskom
      @Tomaskom Před 9 měsíci

      @@Frygisk Absolutely. When I went for training on a skid plate, not instinctively going for the brakes was a major factor in getting it under control instead of a spin, especially in the shorter wheelbase e-208. However, keeping throttle would not help you in any way in the fully developed skid that the skid plate pushes you into instantly, especially on a RWD car. Even for me with FWD it did nothing useful, the surface was just too slippery for that. When it just starts to develop though, in a real scenario, major reduction in throttle (or even brakes) unload the sliding rear of the car and definitely make things worse 🙂.

    Here in winter and spring I have to pretty much not use the auto steer and lane assist as the lines are mostly worn off and the "paths" are only generally following what was marked - so often you get 2 or 3 lanes complete shoulder area, and they effectively become 1 or 2 lanes in the winter and the markings would drive you into a drift or off the road. In the spring the markings are mostly gone, and you have to very careful as that roads get so chewed up by the trucks and SUVs that the assist will just be fighting you too much as you weave around things more - I also get animals crossing (our bypass road has cement between the two directions so if animals come over they are often in a jump, so I stay off the fast lane as it would hit my car over the hood which is bad - I do not know how people have zero issues when they self drive all the time, I always have to be looking ahead and I worry. 3% left is awful tight - even with gas I do the 25% extra for my travel plans; and in winter you need that reserve, granted it is 99% mental anxiety calming - but if you have one scary time, you just never seem to let your guard fully down.

    Getting from 27 to 9 degrees will take more than 12 hours. For test preparations we have found that to have a battery temperature equal to ambient temperature and a delta of roughly 20 degrees we would need about 6 hours for the first half, and about 18 to 24 for the rest, depending on battery mass. It is a lot of mass you are attempting to cool down. Also, the BYD blade cells will surprise you, knowing that you tested the standard range plus LFP before.

      Yeah, these conditions cannot be navigated safely on summer tires. The first day of snow in southern Norway you always get congestion as all the people who haven't changed over to winter tires yet think "I'm special, I can still drive in these conditions" (they can't) and all the busses and foreign semitrucks think "this is what my all season tires are for" (it's not) and end up strewn about the place.

    This is great test to see winter conditions consumption.
    I wonder is very heavy conditions, like for example you are caught out by a snowstorm out of the city. What would happen, what type of consumption for driving and what type of consumption if you decide to camp out in the car until help arrives. How much can you stand with some heat on a battery.
    You did some overnight sleep videos in the past. That would be great to be done again.

    • @Frygisk
      @Frygisk Před 9 měsíci +3

      My guess is 1kw/hr to stay sufficiently warm when stuck in a blizzard. My old model s would use 2-4% percent camping overnight in sub-zero temps, these new model Ys have way less consumption for heating. Just charge up well before a hazardous drive, have a good buffer just in case you get stuck. Teslas are imo the best winter cars out there, Ive driven three different model s over 300.000km in northern Norway and I cant recommend them enough. High quality tires are a must, but that goes for all cars. Never chesp out on tires, especially winter tires.

    I’ve heard the RWD cars are fairly decent in the snow, since it’s obviously not a conventional RWD setup with the weight distribution. This was interesting to see a real-world test not on dedicated snow tires or anything. Definitely should give RWD owners some confidence!
