Devin-Townsend...
"Here is the first song we’ve chosen to release from the upcoming DVD concert, ‘Order Of Magnitude’ which was the first volume of my Empath touring band cycle. This particular band consisted of ten people on stage, all without click tracks or backing tracks, with the aim of reproducing my work in a new and creative way. A lot of what I’ve done in the past has been very structured, and the opportunity to interpret the music with high degrees of improvisation and flow was a fantastic experience.
This song, ‘Genesis’ from my latest album ‘Empath’ seemed an appropriate way to introduce this concert to the audience. It’s kind of an example of ‘musical anarchy’ in some ways- as the song is all over the place structurally to begin with. But to have a chaotic piece of music, played by these extraordinary musicians I had the honour of being with, in a no-holds-barred
production was really cathartic. It was about being free to do whatever we wanted in a time where rigid ideas of what is acceptable or not are stronger than ever.
I hope you enjoy it. Volume 2 is next and is in a lot of ways the polar opposite to this, but on my journey of musical exploration, I am grateful for all of it, so thanks again for the support.”

I need to be careful not to understate this: this is the greatest thing that has happened in the history of the world.
You convey an adequate amount of carefulness
HA HA HA HA! Thanks man, I needed a good laugh. But make no mistake, He is a genius who makes great music!
Over 40+ years of playing and enjoying music, visiting shows and seeing all my inspirations onstage - I must admit that I've never seen and experienced anything like this Devin show. It was like teleporting from a movie through a cartoon into a beach to a theatre scene ending the other side of the universe and back. I can clearly recall a couple (most probably wife+husband) watching the show before me, both having DTP logos tattooed to their necks. They cried, fry screamed, laughed, hugged, hedbanged, cried again - during the same song! The emotional rollercoaster ride during this show was stunning.
Amen brother!!
I want to keep liking this comment
Insane that this was performed live to such perfection. It sounds so close to the studio version. Absolutely mind blowing performance by Devin and all the other musicians.
His live performance sound quality blows away most studio albums.
can I just say how much I love the juxtaposition of metal and Ché Aimee bouncing around in a big puffy dress?
Props to the backup singers. They were amazing live. I remember one of them started tearing up just before Spirits Will Collide. Maybe the content hit them personally. But it was moving to see.
That was at the Nottingham gig.
Being able to pull this off live is... something
This is just unbelievable. The song itself is incredible and even attempting to perform it live is mind blowing let alone actually pulling it off!
That is an insane amount of talent and skill packed within a single song.
NO other vocalist can rip your head off and melt your heart at the same time in one breath!!!
Devin Townsend,Mike Patton, Chino Moreno
@@OlviMasta77 mike patton no, chino no, i already sais devin
Dude....this man is an inspiration on so many levels. Thank you for existing in our life time
WAIT WHAT ?!?!?!?
This particular band consisted of ten people on stage, all without click tracks or backing tracks
I'm sure there was a click track holding visuals and other stuff together. This particular performance has some backing stuff that couldn't be played live I guess. I mean there are synth arpeggiators and other special FX. That whole thing needs a click track, midi clock, or whatever. Otherwise it's pretty impossible to pull off. Still, that's a hell of a show, and demands a ton of rehearsal. I'm sure the sound guy is just as important as anybody else on stage.
Lovely skirt, Dev. Che is gorgeous too
I didn't notice until I saw your comment lol
I think Dev didn't want Che to be the only one with bare legs on stage. Or he got jealous.
Kilt
@@realPenrodPooch nah that's a tutu
Yes and yes ✊🏼
Che looks like she's having so much damn fun up there, it's infectious.
Shes gorg! i wanna be up there rockin out with her :)
How had I not heard of this guy 2 weeks ago? Like holy hell.
Devin is his own genre...this is amazing
Bloody hell that's even more intense than the album... how is that even possible?
I've only gotten into Dev recently, maybe a couple of months at this point, but "this is better than on the album" seems to be a thing with him.
@@TheDarkMessiah He is brilliant at reworking songs. Check out the variations of the song Kingdom. It's been polished and repolished many times. But it's crazy how many places he finds to shove things in there.
@@mikesolomon5584 lol true, don't even talk to me about WAR, holy crap.
The whole Order of Magnitude album is gold.
This is one of the most insane live drum performances I've ever seen.
Jesus that drummer is monstrously good. Well just like everyone else :)
update: its Morgan Ågren and everyone else is not as good as him.
He is great, but those Samus blasts are... not this guy's style, to say the least, lol.
@@anolaf Exactly, we need Samus handling the blasts
isn't he Morgan Ågren? he is indeed a top drummer.
Morgan is an absolutely world class drummer! Sure, Samus does great blast beats (and is overall a fabulous drummer), but drumming is more than speed. Tomas Haake said that when he needed to figure out some extra tricky drum part, he took it up with Morgan. He’s just a wizard. 👍🤘
@@anolaf he needed 2 HAND PLAYED e-pads to do the faster double bass parts. if you look closely everytime he accelerates past 16ths on the "feet"
No offense to Devin's past bandmates (any of them, they were all fantastic) but it's absolutely awesome to see him finally surrounded by virtuosic, world-class musicians. Nathan especially never ceases to stun me
I miss Gene
what did I just see??!! Devin , you are Genius! I sit here with my mouth open and tears running down my cheeks. In decades there was no Musician who impressed
me so much! God give me the chance to meet you one day and see your live show.
Damn dude, how'd you get Dave Gilmour on rhythm guitar
lol
Dave Gilmour wishes he could play like Mike Keneally. ;)
@@brbernardini God Bless you for speaking such deep truth
Brian Bernardini not even mike agrees with that hahaha
I'm sure Mike would take that as a huge compliment 😜
Literally took my breath away. How this was even possible LIVE from them all brings tears of joy to my eyes. For all the shittiness that people are capable of, that people are also able to create such art, beauty and positive power just makes me crumple onto the floor. Man, the day that Devy has to stop, will be a very sad day.
Probably one of the most technical songs ever written by any artist ever. Tell me I'm wrong.
"... all without click tracks or backing tracks". Yeah, man, that's what I've been waiting for! The 2CD+DVD pack is going to be MINE!
Can you save a copy for me???
FOMO!
Got to have!
Morgan trying to metal it with pads without @66samus. I mean I live the effort but I see the holes.
I was looking for a full band townsend show then he released this and i was happy.
@@mikesmith30000 Mate, complaining because Morgan Agren doesn't play a blastbeat 'properly' is like dismissing Christopher Wren for not being a good bricklayer. Agren is on a completely different level, playing in a completely different way. And I for one would take one drummer who can play a ton of different styles over all the CZcams blastbeat merchants in the world.
I'm just trying to figure out how I can hear a choir... Perhaps there are some pads on the keyboard for these sections. Must be a pretty complex rig for this song! Or I suppose some sort of effect on the backing vocals might be the key. I just can't fathom how they have pulled this off without click & backing tracks! Amazing!
I'm not crying, you're crying.
I see Devin, I click play. No questions asked.
devin is an opera metal singer most stuff he does is like an orchestra btween madness and metal with alternating clean vocals and screams ,but love his heavy guitar tone
Mike Keneally casually playing that ostinato at 4:50 as an arpeggio, like an absolute badass he is.
I don't even think it's like that on the album
@@MooseyFate100 I think it is, I remember Dev saying that Mike laid down that little guitar thing and that he couldn't dream of playing something like that, let alone come up with it
This is the type of songs we dream of and wake up wishing them were real
Interesting how Morgan has adapted by playing the insanely fast double bass parts by playing with his hands on drum pads, CLEVER!
omg the mix is immense, what a band
I actually would prefer the drums to be more punchy and clear like with DTP, but damn it's indeed great
@@seenbelow Drums are punchy, it's just that Morgan isn't really a metal drummer.
@@NervousProject yet he still nailed the 270 bpm blast beats
Morgan is more have a powerful Jazz drummer. That’s why I was surprised Devin chose him for the tour, I didn’t know if he could keep up with the fast metal stuff but I was proved dead wrong. I should known to trust Devin.
@@Amrani964he used pads to help (and I don’t blame him for it at all)
Morgan Ågren! What an amazing drummer!!
Really enjoyed working with him on the ( Defragmentism Project ) by Robert Ritchiesse
Devin belongs to the same Circle of Musicians as Zappa was. Outstanding and definitely on a higher Level than anyone can reach
Actual goosebumps........wow
This is music and art at the zenith of the pyramid.
A composition of a brilliant madman. I love it.
Mike Keneally literally looks like a prog metal David Gilmour in this video
Yeah for a second I was like "WTF, is that Gilmour?" haha
Dude, to a T! Spot on!
Oh shit. Is that really Mike keneally??? I'm kinda more stoked for that then Gilmore
I had to stop and rewind to check if it was Dave or not lol
If I hadn't seen this with my own eyes, I would not have believed it possible.
Oh Lord, thanks for the internet - I can hear and see it all.
Beyond. This is Beyond.
Devin Townsend is my favorite Doctor
This. Is. Foken. Amazing.
CAN NOT WAIT .... CAN NOT WAIT ....
This was the last gig I went to before lock down, and it was f***ing awesome, thanks Devin
Same here.
Same! Couldn't have been a better last hurrah before it all went south, though!
Lockdown is the reason I wasn't able to see this show. I am sad everyday because of it
Same here!
Also same in Brooklyn at the end of Feb.
Genius!!!!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I am in heaven!
Damn I love this song. It's like Devin's whole discography crammed into 6 minutes. And it works superbly.
Exactly. It’s his masterpiece.
THIS is what I Love about Progressive Music.... Nothing but a Musical Journey and Adventure! Devin Townsend is an absolute Master of this! Forever a fan! ^v^
with nathan navarro playing bass! wonderful!
There is literally nothing this band can't do. Absolutely stellar.
Can't wait to see hear me live
hats of to the sound engineer!
i saw this live. it was insanely good sounding.
Unbelievable. This is gonna be my funeral song. Even better than the studio version!!!!
I saw this show. Was phenomenal. Best audience vibes I've had at a concert. Dev made sure each and every one of us felt loved by the end.
Can it get any better than this?!? *Blown away*
Where is the f... LOVE button? Hail to the King Devin!
Man I just LOVE seeing my boy Navarro up there ripping it like the monster he is.
He is fantastic!
Can't wait to have this record fit nicely alongside Retinal Circus, By a Thread, Plovdiv, and Royal Albert Hall 😁
Same here!
Had a great time at this gig. It was the first gig I have ever gone to with my Dad. He's a Thin Lizzy, Rainbow and Pink Floyd fan so I lent him Empath to see what he thought. Then when he said he liked it I brought him a ticket for his 60th. You can see my dad, husband, brother in law and me beside the sound deck at the end of this video! We had such a fantastic time. I'm super hyped to see the live video as I hadn't noticed Devin was wearing a skirt! The curses of being 5ft 5 in a crowd of tall people and not being allowed to go to the front. :-)
What a cool dad you have!
One of the best performers ever! We are fortunate to be seeing him burning the stage with his aura🙏🤘🏼
And huge respect for Morgan as well. Beast drummer.
Loved seeing them playing together.
Holy mother that was INSANE!
😯 I have been reborn...
What a drummer...
Magnificent!!
Wow. Wow.
Genesis has turned into one of my favourite songs actually. I love that it is all over the place. It is everything. It is so much. But it all means something. There are subtle things and loud things and cute things and metal things. It is everything I love about Devin. 💜
Man what a great song
this is stupidly good
This song is a masterpiece. One of the best songs ever written IMO
AWESOMEEEEEE!!!!!
DT composes his musical world with an enormous talent, that's for sure. He also knows how to make reference to his influencers by integrating Mike Keneally (guitar) and Morgan Ågren (drums) to his band, former musicians of Frank Zappa and Steve Vai. Respect, Devin!
I'm so glad I went to this show, I was right behind one of the crane cameras on the left hand side, but still had the best time of my life. I laughed, I cried, it was a right emotional rollercoaster!
Can't wait to get to see it all over again! ❤️
The whole show was a highlight, but the highest highlight for me was the amazing version of Disco Inferno at the end...truly spectacular
Sublime!
Unreal!!
Transcends genre and definition. Just shear talent and experience. Perfect.
@C B That’s just like, your opinion manZ
Morgan I love your awesome work!! Tremendo baterista!!
Mais. qu'est-ce. que. c'est. que. ce. TRUUUUC !!!!!!!!!
This song has the greatest identity crisis ever found in music - but somehow it's still epic.
That chorus is amazing
Genius🤘😍😍😍
Seeing Diego here makes me happy
Oh I was searching for a comment to confirm it was Diego
QuadBlaster _ What’s the update on their situation? I’ve heard just speculations, but I’m not even sure what the rumors are
@A Drum _ wtf you guys talking bout? what did I miss? O.O"
Wow just wow
crazy best musician ^^^loooove!!!
Without fail, I watch this every day
Incredible!
Yay!
super tight!!!!
The unmistakable wall of sound from Devy as always. The king of the epic chorus!
Brilliant.
Greetings from Germany! There was an epic show in Hamburg last year. Unforgettable musicians!°!!
Went to the Glasgow show, one of the best gigs I've been to. And I'm old- I've seen hundreds of bands!
4.28 gave me chills.
I love this performance, saw them back in December but a fight broke out beside me during this song and threw me off for a bit so I'm glad this video exists.
Also Morgan is such a diverse drummer he nailed this live, not that I'd doubt him for a second.
whats the drummer's full name im really interested.
@@Amrani964 Morgan Agren, very interesting drummer, one of my favourites
with the help of some e-pads, which he played with his hands, he was able to pull off the fast double bass
Chills and a huge smile, every single time I watch this. What an incredible song.
i just want to know how he can outdo himself every year impressive
Nathan Navarro killing it on bass ❤🌝🤘
Wonderful
I've been lucky enough to see them live last year. One of the best concerts I've ever seen!
Same here! Mindblowing!
Coffee 'N' Stuff even my girlfriend liked it and she doesn’t even like metal! Incredible
@@PietroBlanca Haha, nice! I try to turn everybody I know onto his music. :D
Saw him here in the states just before all this hit, he was incredible
Got to see him in Oslo in november, one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
I regret I have but one like to give....
My god this is beautiful.
Amazing.
