I was actually finishing up a couple Grenada videos, but I thought I would slip this Mayaro vid in, just to show how different fishing can be.
This was probably my worst day ever surf fishing...under some terrible conditions. But hey, I still tried...
Nonetheless, throughout the video I did share some good tips and lessons on the rig I used, plus rigging up a sabiki and a how to on catching sand fleas (sea cockroaches) for bait. So try your best to watch to the end!...lol ..

Surf fishing in the Mayaro area is pretty wasting time. For nearly a century of using seines to strain whatever could be netted has completely destroyed the ecology.
I was born in Mayaro.
As a boy (I am 62 now) I used to wonder at the fish-kill every time a seine was thrown. Hundred of pounds of unwanted fish strewn on the beach, corbeaux feasting even before the net was picked up, and dealing with ignorant seine-men.
Today there is no unwanted fish. Down to stingray and crapaud-fish are eaten.Even down to the late seventies truckloads........yes, truckloads of Cavalli or ancho used to be caught in a single net.
But I can talk on and on about that.
The entire length of Mayaro beach are strewn with little creeks and lagoons emptying out in the sea, hence why the water gets discolored easily after rains. These creeks and lagoons are spawning grounds for catfish. If you tour them, you will understand what I mean. And when it rains, most likely you will catch catfish on the surf.
Surf fishing can be better lower down towards Point Galeota, Guaya. Once you pass Bptt staff complex, surf fishing gets better, because there are rocks in the sea, and no one wants to get his seine caught and lost on the rocks. So the seabed is better in that area.
Sea tattoo is the preferred bait, that can be dug up from the sand. If you have patience to open chip-chip with a small penknife and have about ten on a hook, that is even better. Zelwan, Barbey, Melwish all like these bait. You can try shrimp too.
You have to have grabber weights, as the current is quite strong, and will carry your line wherever it goes, spitting it out on shore in a few minutes.
You have to be pretty fortunate to catch the stray cavalli from the surf, with whatever bait you use. In the good ole' days, yes it was quite common, but we all know about over-fishing.
I would not waste time to fish in Mayaro Beach.

@KoS M i'm from guayaguayare and pyramid sinker is waste ah time as well u have to make anchor sinkers, it have to much current and wind also california rigs don't work nur sabiki, it have a lot of pompanos #zelone trini name for it and a lot of bait stealers so u got salt the shrimps to get hard

Went once...used stinky herring chunks and small circle hooks right there in mayaro...all i caught was some good size catfish bout 1 or 2lbs....nothing huge like a tarpon or a jack tho...need to go deeper for that stuff

Hey kos just wondering how you set the drag, do you tighten before you throw and then loosen it after?
Syyed Hosein Hey bro...Your drag should be fairly tight when you are casting...You can adjust thereafter how you want it...If you are setting the rod and leaving it for sometime you would need to loosen it a bit.
I admire what u do and the vids u post next time u surf fish get yourself a breakaway lead sold at mankees or u can make what we call a “ grabber” current is to strong for regular sinkers. Fish On

Hmmm current usually too strong for the drop sinker. I try with pyramid (still dont catch much lol)
Paul Lutchmansingh Yea...the current was super strong...And it was a full moon as well. Actually had to do some deliveries up there that day...So tried it one time...Will try again with the grabbers!

Have to use heavier sinker like 4 ounce pyramid… and for some reason.. snook is the best bait for that beach lol.. everytime I put piece of cut bait snook I catch a big fish. Catch a big black margate week before and a big catfish.. the two times I put snook on lol

I'm going mayaro early next year. Any tips on what bait you use? I'll use the grabbing sinker for sure.. But any specific baits?
Noah Rahman For sure you should try the sand fleas and if you get fresh shrimp or squid...That should work. For a chance at a bigger fish...You need live bait!

Squid does work rell good. Stays on your hook forever but only ever caught catfish with it. U cud try some chicken gizzard as well yea. Use to use that back in the day as well if the bait scn hard to get.

For surf fishing, use a pyramid sinker or a sputnik sinker. Both those weights grab the sand and resist the current moving them around. And hardhead catfish is terrible bait.
Yea bro...I know now that I had to get the pyramid or anchor sinkers...Didn't have any at the time...And well I was hoping to get something else as bait...Just didn't get through....next time!

Hey bro, as far as I know they don't bite. You could see I was handling them without any issue. Many times people hear stuff that's not 100% true and then this info gets passed around and people tend to believe it...they are safe...

the best thing to use is a grabber sinker bro. Coastline outdoor which is right before persads in mayaro has them for i think $40. But all i ever caught in mayaro is catfish. 14 in on night already! :D. Puttigal boi!

well daz what you getting in maracas anyhow LOL. fry catfish does taste bess. does get plenty stingray from the coast in maracas too so da cud damage your reel so watch out for that.

Bro mayaro is terrible to surf fish...next time use salted chip chip for pampano/zelwon during the dry season. Rainy season u might get some mullet/karangjet but otherwise that beach is a bit barren.
Next time try guayre - it's much more fishing friendly.
