I have found that the easier way to add texture to the foam is to actually use the tinfoil before it’s assembled.
If you use a sheet of aluminum foil and you place it on the foam and then use an iron (I use Cricut Easy Press but a non-steam iron setting can work just as good) so it manipulates the foam to get crinkly all in one piece and you can increase the texture based on how many times you do it :)

When I worked for Tandy my manager taught me a lot about tool use (that old cowboy type that's been doin this since before I was born). The way you use the groove tool in this video is the correct way to use it. That adjustable arm is supposed to be your guide, and the flat piece in the tool is the marking part. This becomes more apparent if you swap out that flat piece for the black groover (which comes with the tool when you buy at Tandy). That alternative tool actually creates a channel in the leather, and it would not work if you tried to use it the other way.
Edit: Also, the ceramic blade for the swivel knife should not be sharpened (read: cannot be sharpened). Instead, you would use a strop and some polishing compound to remove any burs that may form during use (which is quite rare).

Shit man, I couldn't figure out which was the foam from the thumbnail! I figured Paige's brighter orange bag was foam just from the orange color, but the stitching looked amazeballs. Not the the stitching on the darker brown didn't look convincing but based on the stitches I started sussing Bill's browner bag.
I have a hard time getting the foam to take the foil method of transfer, never convinced I'm getting enough texture on it. But I couldn't pick out a faux bag based on texture from the thumbnail!

I'd like to thin it out....am going to try to use some rough sandpaper on the rough side of the leather piece to do so...can't afford any "short-time-use tools. In your opinion, is this a good way to make my small, (3" w/h), piece thinner? Keep up the good work I"m old, I like the leather route instead of most often foam........... Thank you for any help you might provide.

    • @redbirdtrade

I don't know that you'll need to thin 1oz leather very much, that's quite thin already! But if you still want to, you're on the right track with removing material from the "flesh" side. You can use a razor blade to scrape off material - that's called skiving.

They should just make eva foam that looks like leather. I’d buy it in bulk.

Leather looks and smells real. Foam looks and smells like a toy. I don't mind toys on a shelf. Would much rather have the real deal.
