Just had a superficial keratectomy done today, along with pulling down a little bit of the white part of the eye. They did a nerve block and they gave me some propofol to put me deeply sedated/asleep and this happened in the preoperative area just before going to surgery. And they told me that I would wake up just a little bit to where I would understand what’s happening and if I wanted, they can give me more sedatives and I requested to have some Versed. So they gave me the propofol very slowly and got a little lightheaded. Just a little more. But then rapidly become real lightheaded before I know it, I had fallen into that sleep, and they did the injections. And I started to come to what I was moving on my stretcher in the operating room and I can hear my surgeon greeting me and then talking and then him asking me to turn my head to the left a little bit and then the anesthesia person who is with me starts giving me Versed right after that and then that’s the last thing I remember before they did surgery because my memory was blocked and there went my recall. And I had absolutely no memory. Nor recall of what happened at all during the actual surgery. It really felt like I was completely knocked out. Verse said is strong. and before I knew it, I found myself leaving the operating room and going to recovery. And it really felt like I was taking a super long deep nap once the Versed kicked in. Because I don’t remember a thing after that until they reversed it. That made it a much smoother and positive experience. And the doctor was great. right now. I’m just recovering and resting and I’m not feeling too bad. I was still pretty sleepy/a little lightheaded and dizzy before the Versed was given.

Although cataracts are much more common in persons over 60, they can occur at any age. Cataracts can be caused by trauma, medication, and genetic circumstances as well as natural maturity.

Do you have to be sedated?

Thank you for your question. Our doctors prefer to sedate patients before and during cataract surgery.

@@ClearChoiceLaser I did my first eye without sedation or general anesthesia. Had 2 numbing needles injected behind my eyeball which was no worst then the dentist. No sedation or anesthesia was my request as anesthesiologist was there but didn’t use him. No pain. Only uncomfortable part was laying on my back at a angle for 15 mins still. Would preferred no needles and just numbing drops. Dr and nurses were little shocked I could take the 2 needles without sedation as that was not their normal procedure. A lot of doctors only use numbing drops and no needles now because of the risk even small with needle injections or the disease effects of sedation. I was in and out. 20/20 vision when checked. Left eye has not been done that was 2 years ago.
