As far as the Bible teaches, ministry is a gift, and it is given by the Holy Spirit.
My experience tells me it's better to know the God of men very well before labouring to know men of God. Taking it the other way round many times lead into ditches. Caleb, Elijah, Daniel and many others weren't raised by men but by the Spirit of Jehovah.
What of Elisha? What of Timothy?
He is not suggesting that you follow men to know God. He is saying that once you start following God the Holy spirit will lead you to certain men who have had similar dealings with God as you are having. The Holy spirit will be taking you through similar paths that he has taken them to work out His particular desire in you. Hence when you hear such a person speak, it will be confirming certain things in your spirit, because that's one of the ways the Holy spirit will be speaking to you such thing as mostly pertaining to your ministry.
