    This is truly devastating for so many, we are still marooned in Wood Lane.
    The Church is remaining open 24/7 with food, hot water, toilet and blankets available; The Hare and Hounds next door are doing a sterling job.

      Despite all the problems it's nice to know that there are still many people who care about people faced with this situation. We have had two friends contact us and ask if we are alright where we live in Donny.

    To think I have walked across the Don river at low tide and not got my knees wet. I was a kid then 60 years ago.

    National lottery funding should be spent on the areas hit by flooding instead of churches and sports clubs

    Madness, Last time I was in Fishlakes was during the Queens Diamond Jubilee, At that time the Flood Defences had been very close to breaching, It's unbelievable that they weren't improved after that.

    Imagine if this was in Kent or Surrey. There’d be Oxfam ads on the telly and Johnson spaffing unpleasantness all over the place.

      Understand Oxfam are arranging collections in Africa for our area.

      I work for Oxfam and there is more concern for the situation in Bangladesh and India. I don't intend to make light of the situation in Fishlake, but here in the UK this is nothing more than a major inconvenience for a relatively small amount of people. And while this round of floods has sadly taken a life in Matlock, we should consider ourselves extremely fortunate to live somewhere that doesn't get hit too severely and can recover quickly. Lessons will be learned, defences improved, awareness increased. The same isn't true for the unfortunate souls in Bangladesh and India, where floods caused by a cyclone have so far killed ten and displaced 2 million. It will take these people much longer to get back on their feet.
      Oxfam cannot help everyone, unfortunately. Their priority is with those who need help the most. They certainly don't see northern villages as being less deserving of assistance than wealthier southern areas. They do make the unfortunate decision that poor people in Asia are more deserving of help than relatively wealthy British people. And that is a decision I understand.
      I'm no fan of Boris, but he has just visited Matlock, so it's not like he's ignoring the situation here in England.

    Best wishes to everyone who is suffering from this :( This is shocking, especially since the rain warning on Met Office was an Amber warning and not a Red warning. Fishlake is the only area where the water levels are continuing to rise according to the Environment Agency. There are 7 severe flood warnings but the other 6 state that no more rain is expected so river levels should decrease slowly, hopefully the river levels decrease in Fishlake too.

      I just received an email from my daughter, the first house I lived in, in Fishlake , is called Victoria cottage, the place is flooded to a depth of 2-3 feet. Looks like the owner videod it. Its 68 years since I lived there, 48 since leaving Fishlake, and I can never remember it flooding. Saw some old photos in the "Hare and hounds" of flooding but they must have been in the early 1900's I guess.

    • @lowstratus
      @lowstratus Před 4 lety +1

      I suggest you have a look at the definitions of Red and Amber warnings on the Met Office website. Red is extensive and widespread which is not the case given the localised issues around Fishlake. If you want to blame anyone I suggest you look in the direction of the EA who I believe said Fishlake was safe even up to a few hours before the banks were breached.

    • @benxyb2791
      @benxyb2791 Před 4 lety

      @@lowstratus Oh ok :) I just didn't think an Amber warning could cause this much flooding. Also, luckily, the flood warnings have all been downgraded from severe flood warnings to standard flood warnings, so hopefully people in Fishlake are able to return home soon.

    My sister, her husband and 4 cats live in the beautiful village of Fishlake in a bungalow, so no upper level to move up to. They are flooded and cut off with little charge left on their phones to communicate and say their welly's floated off so wandering around with wet feet for hours now. I worry about them and their cats who are making mournful noises unheard of before. What happens to all the animals.

    Can I recommend you sending it to Boris Johnson, because I believe aerial videos give the real impact of how bad this situation is. There are many arguments about the whys and wherefores, and maybe planning depts., are alot to answer for, but the reality is that this will happen more in the future and action is required to have more prevention flood schemes, dredging, etc.
