- The plaintiff hired the defendant to babysit her pet hamster. The defendant lost the hamster and she’s distraught, so she’s suing for emotional distress. The defendant argues he runs a pet shop and has never had a pet escape before this. He claims the plaintiff gave him a faulty cage for the animal, so it’s not his fault. He gave her a new hamster and he doesn’t think he owes her for emotional distress.

People are being pretty cruel in the comment section today. This woman is heartbroken over her Urby. It doesn’t matter what type of animal it is, people get attached to their pets. And why are we making fun of the way she looks, if everyone looked the same we would be living in a very boring and bland world.

Hamsters are escape artists. I used to have some when I was small. One slightly loose clip, and it’s gone.
I've heard the judge and Harvey explain that pets are property many times. But I gotta say Judge MM did so well explaining the law to the plaintiff without undermining -not even a tiny bit. ❤

i feel bad for her cause the hamster is still a pet. I had 2 hamsters, one after another, each living for 2 months shy of 3 years. When we got the hamsters I knew their life span was 1-3 years on average, they don't live the 10+ years of dogs and cats, they are a short commitment and she'd have lost him a year or so later. My first hamster was the best hamster liked being handled and all that, my second (profile pic lol) was more of a leave me alone but never bit so a win. I'm glad she found a new hamster.

Very sad, because of the mental illness. People who don’t have experience with around people with mental illness don’t get it - their brains work differently. Something that is not a big deal to a lot of people can leave a life long impact on someone with mental illness. Of course the judge was right, but it’s still very sad. People making fun of her in the comments truly need a serious life lesson in compassion.

I had a hamster once. She looked a lot like Urby. She ran away twice. My brother found her the 1st time coming out of our cellar. This was the week I was at summer camp. I wouldn't have known it if my family hadn't told me. I can't remember when it was she ran away the 2nd time. But we never found her again. 🥺
I wish I could write a children’s book about urby the adventurer! So she knows he had a great life after he escaped. If boarded her hamster for a few days you know she loves it and that’s all that matters.
Update. Urby sent a postcard from the Bahamas. He is living his best life. ❤
bereaving for the loss of a person or pet can be a life long pain, not sure why she did not take up the offer of bereavement counselling because no amount of money can heal the pain. Counselling provides the tools to cope with trauma now and in the future.
I really like the defendant. I also can relate and sympathize with the plaintiff, who i was glad had her brother there as a witness for her.

I wish we were moving towards a society where animals are not considered property. My heart breaks for the plaintiff because I have two senior cats that I adopted and they are my heartbeat. When I had to be away from them while I was in a rehab facility I was so depressed . There's nothing like the love of an animal. My boys are my emotional support animals. I'm glad the judge understood and that the defendant understood as well. Let's pray that Urby is living somewhere safe and loved
This is a rough case. I understand that a pet is considered property, so you aren't entitled to pain and suffering, but I think this law needs to change. People get attached to their pets and strive to give them a good home. It doesn't matter if it is a dog or a hamster. They are both living animals that rely on you for good care. Bonds are formed and love is developed.

Her brother is a saint! And the pet shop owner, it's obvious, feels badly for her. She obviously feels very down, but in reality, she is surrounded by amazing human beings. Please, try another new hamster. Not all pets and humans are a great fit the first time around.

Please make it a policy to use weights on the cages if the owner says their animal likes to escape. I could see that happening with a dog that likes escaping if the owner says to use extra security but the store doesn't. Owners know their animals best.😢
Defendant is absurd…. He allows random customers/visitors unrestricted access to boarded animals… and then after losing her ESA- offers up some *random* unqualified woman to act as a grief counselor? Absolutely nuts. I wish this lady could’ve gotten something for her distress..

My son's best little friend Lisa's, family were moving to Germany. We got Hammy.❤ He lived forever! I finally had to put him down! He was dragging his back legs behind him & I figured we probably had him for two or three years after they moved. When I informed Lisa's mom of it, she was shocked he'd lived that long. He ate well, cage was cleaned & we loved him, I was sad when the time came but yay, no more cage cleaning!🥹

Previous episode, a 24 yr old guy needs an emotional support ferret. Now, a middle-aged woman needs an emotional support hamster. What they need is medication, and counselling. I don't think pets get the right type of consideration and attention when they're being used as a crutch for someone's problems.
And there should be tighter criteria to define 'emotional support animal', for reason and type.

I am confusion because the liner is actually kind of adorable on her, especially with that hair. It is giving Egyptian vibes. Also, when it came to Urby at first I was like okay why not take the one you were offered but when she admitted her she had a mental illness and that coupled with the fact that she cannot afford something bigger, I understood. She just needs someone that she can love 🥺
It's hard when you experience pet grief or they are terminally ill. You often don't have someone that understands that your feelings are valid and you need to be able to express them. There will always be people who make cold comments that are cruel.
If you don't like animals you should form your own group to gripe on.

To me, it wasn’t the principal of the thing as she said at the end because the man tried everything he could to make up for it. I think when people say it’s the principal of the thing it’s because the defendant is denying any responsibility. imo
I think there should be a change in the law. Some areas of the world do accept that pets are part of the family.
