- A referee in a Mexican football match made an accidental and potentially game-changing block during Liga MX's game between Cruz Azul and Toluca. Cruz Azul were pushing for their third goal, after a looped ball over the top they were through on goal only for the first attempt to strike a post. The ball then bounced back into the path of another attacker and as he struck it at goal the referee, Óscar Macías, accidentally blocked it. Despite a rallying surge from Toluca to bring the score level at 2-2 the home side managed to find a third goal in the second half.

Agreed, there is no reason for that ref to have entered the penalty area. The ref should have moved to his left and not his right as well. He moved across the most likely shooting angle of the striker.
He was actually speeding to catch up with the players. I bet he is also a player himself and his brain just activated "player mode". There is no reason for him to sprint to the box.

@@adfi5316 I am on the referee's side. No one anticipated the ball to bounce off the post straight to him. Most of the times the ball would either go in or out for a goalkick. The only time referees have no business in the box is when there's plenty of players in there. This is just bad luck, not the referee's fault.

I remember when I took my referee classes back when i was a ref they showed a video of a ref getting hit by a cross into the box because of his awful positioning. This is now the video they will show at those classes 😂
I have no words for how bad the possitioning of this ref is. Reffing 101, don't ever enter the penalty box while the attacking team is there.

Yeah ref shouldn’t be inside the box like that and look how he breaks into a full sprint, faster than the players. This ref either has an ego and thinks people are there to watch him, has some kind of side bet going on, or is secretly a fan of the other team.

No. If play is stopped in the area then drop ball goes to keeper always. And play only stops outside the area if possession changes after the ball hits the referee. If possession does not change then it's play on.
Darwinion is correct. Possession changed after the ball hit the referee (blue possession -> goal kick for white), meaning the restart is a drop ball. But in the penalty area, drop balls are always given to the keeper.

@@sawer6440 It's not so much that, it's more that goalscoring isn't as easy as people think. I have played a lot of football in my life, and I've always struggled with goalscoring. They're playing at a much higher level where the intensity and technical ability is a lot higher. It's difficult.
