  • This is the first video in a new series called "Why I Own It." In this series of videos, I talk about a single media item and the reason why I own it. My aim is for these videos to be short and to the point. In this first edition, I talk about why I own the Jurassic Park DTS DVD released in 2000.

I TOTALLY have this DTS disc, too - I got one that had the faulty LFE track, but Universal sent me a replacement. I never understood the extreme fanaticism over this title's audio track, though; it was aggressive and loud, sure, but even the T Rex stomping sequence never really shook my windows to pieces... and that was with the correct disc replacement.
I don't get rid of DVDs that I don't have to - I also have the DTS editions of Apollo 13, Jurassic Park III, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, U-571... there's nothing wrong with them.
In the DVD era, DTS was always the preferred audio track - in the Blu-ray/4K era, I find that Dolby TrueHD is a "stronger" codec than DTS Master Audio.

I wish 4K Blu-rays and remastered Blu-rays would start bringing back the theatrical audio mixes. Even in plain old Dolby Digital or DTS, they often sound better than what we got on Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray.

A pivotal movie in more than one category; I saw this in the theater 3 times. I still have my first edition Laser Disc release of Jurassic Park (1993). I purchased it when they first became available. It's hard to believe that it's been over 30 years since the movie premiered on the silver screen.

Jurassic Park was the very first film to showcase DTS surround when it premiered. I still remember seeing that “DTS Experience” trailer before the most started and it blew my mind. Still love it today, but you rarely see it anymore. In the earlier DVD days from ‘97 to 2000, I used to deliberately seek out the stand-alone DTS DVD’s. They were really hard to find, and when I did it was like winning a scavenger hunt. I always loved DTS mixes the most though. Some discs took forever to find for me. Like the DTS only copy of Daylight for instance. I still have all of my various JP copies though, from VHS to 4K blu-ray today. Including both pan-scan and letterboxed copies on VHS, unopened and still in there plastic from Suncoast in late 1993 when it first came out on home video. I bought copies to watch, and second copies to hold on to for nostalgia, I love the movie so much.

The way I watch "Jurassic Park" now is a fan preservation that uses the UHD regraded to better match the colors of the original 1993 prints with actual theatrical DTS, directly ripped from the theatrical CD-roms, with proper level adjustments for surround activity and LFE, that retains the dynamics of the farfield mix, not those nonsense nearfield remixes that ruin the historical value of the first ever DTS mix that the official releases have deprived us from for so long. Maybe one day this title will finally have a proper UHD restoration with proper film grain structure and colors plus original audio. Fingers crossed. I also have a 35mm scan with theatrical DTS as an alternative to the several botched official editions.

Curious if they were level matched. We tend to prefer what is louder/has more bass studies prove. I watch 2k/4k over standard DVD everytime cause even if I just used my system in 2.1 mode it rocks. I always use DTS Neural X even if disc is Atmos. Also a very robust front stage with or without center and multi subs is the win IMO no matter how many small badly placed speakers one tries to use to chase surround sound. To me by far the biggest jump in quality is usually SD to HD.

I bought the same ultimate trilogy set like yours because I wanted the visual portion of the movies to resemble what I grew up with as a kid, this time being 1080p blu ray VS the VHS tapes I had. Night and day difference.
I don't usually refer to myself as an audiophile because it's just another word for "nerd" that people will use to make fun of but I have records, tapes, CD's, and digital copies of plenty of things and each have their strengths, weaknesses, and proper applications.
All that being said, I never fully branched out into sound mixes for movies because I still lack a proper surround sound set up in my home, still rocking 2 channel in 2024.
What I have noticed though, is that, like a record pressing in different regions/countries, they are by no means the same quality or have the same sound signature. So with multichannel digital mixes, those are best represented by the times in which they were released and the technology/engineers that mixed them.
Since I don't have a proper surround set up I can only conjecture that a 5.1 DTS mix from previous years "up channeled" to 7.1 DTS in the modern day may not sound as great as the 5.1 mix for whatever technical or subjective reason. It's the same kind of argument about original analog pressings of certain records compared to modern remastered pressings. To me, the originals sound more life like, where as the remasters sound clean, correct, but sterile with no soul.
I'm glad the algorithm did its job and led me to this video, it's nice to know that my record argument can apply to movie mixes as well and that the newest mixes aren't always better than the originals, unless the most tender loving care goes into them or the dynamic range remains intact and stellar even on a newer system. Thanks for the vid, cheers!

Yes. I remember these Region 1 imports for DTS only editions from back in the day. I still have a copy of Saving Private Ryan and Galaxy Quest which were early DTS only discs before the bitrate got compressed further after being halved.
Jurassic park I think is still only 768kbs on DVD vs the Laserdisc full "Core" 1.5mbs ? But from Bowfinger onwards DTS was crushed down again to fit a Dolby Track and DTS track on one disc, which meant no more choosing as these early versions oftentimes had no bonus materials and were $5-$10 more than there Dolby counterparts.
I remember Apolo 13 was $34.99 vs $24.99 and had no bonus material. Dolby outsold them 10-1 so these were often re released as special edition sets with both soundtracks but always watered down DTS versions.

I don't mind the remix that much, but I do mind the fact that they added a seemingly random sound effect in one scene. As someone who's watched this hundreds of times since the 90s, the added raptor snarls in the kitchen scene REALLY stick out like a sore thumb. It's when they're crawling on the floor just before the toe tap. The sounds were put in with the first blu ray version and kept for subsequent re-releases, DVD does not have them. And it's the only real modification in terms of content throughout the entire movie.

I'm not an A/V expert, but you should be able to at least get everything to work (so long as the laserdisc player isn't broken). You'll just get stereo sound instead of 5.1 but at least it's something. The price is one of the reasons I've been waiting so long to figure and a good deal. I'm not one to rush out and pay more than I think I should pay. Thanks.

@@2ndHandHomeTheater , the only good thing about laserdisc now is the price. But players are super expensive and no parts or repair anymore. I generally only go for the good deals, except for my Star Wars sets those can get pricy.

That's a fair point, honestly in my home theater DVDs look pretty good. Yeah it's not the same as a Blu-ray or 4k disc, but by no means is it unwatchable. It's just a matter of preference. Thanks.

No it doesn't. I checked just now, the 4K release has a DTS 7.1 track which folds out to a DTS:X mix if you have the right hardware. It's not the original theatrical mix.

Hey dude, just some constructive criticism this video has about 2.5 to 3 minutes of actual content. If you go back and review this you’ll notice that almost everything you’ve stated here you say at least twice and the question you pose in the title isn’t answered until halfway through the video.
I think if you keep those things in mind, it will help you make more compelling videos that more people will enjoy watching and come away with the informative information you’re attempting to address. The DTS mix thing was something I didn’t know about and I’m sure a lot of other people found that informative useful too, but it can be stated in a more efficient and effective way.
    Cheers
