- Something I have wanted to watch and more importantly listen to since my first home theater system! Also Aliens in DOLBY...WINNING!
DVDs use compressed audio formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS for multichannel sound. Most LaserDiscs were encoded with stereo (often Dolby Surround) CD quality audio 16bit/44.1 kHz tracks as well as analog audio tracks.[26]
DTS-encoded LaserDiscs have DTS soundtracks of 1,235 kbit/s instead of the reduced bitrate of 768 kbit/s commonly employed on DVDs with optional DTS audio.
In 1993, Digital Theater Systems debuted its new 6-channel digital playback system in movie theaters worldwide with the release of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. In the years since, blockbusters and award-winning films such as Braveheart, Apollo 13, Twister, Independence Day, Lost World: Jurassic Park and Con-Air have all utilized the DTS sound system.
Now DTS Technology is bringing DTS Digital Surround to your home theater. Up to 5.1 channels of 20-bit audio (five full-range channels plus a subwoofer channel) are encoded on the digital tracks of a DTS laserdisc. The analog tracks contain the standard stereo surround soundtrack, or other special programming such as an audio commentary. A standard LaserDisc player with digital audio output is required to access the DTS soundtrack from a LaserDisc. DTS Encoded CDs completely replace the standard audio track with the DTS bitstream. For CD and LD playback, a standard player with Digital Audio outputs is all that is required. A DTS decoder (either stand-alone or integrated into an A/V receiver) is also required. - Zábava
for the record - when you pause the LD the digital signal is not on so my reciever goes to Pro-Logic - trust me when I say when you hit play it comes back on. It was and will be in DTS ;)
The digital sound mixing on LD releases back in the 90s, was revolutionary for its time. Even in this day and age, it holds up alot better than most DVD and BD releases.
Indeed! :)
I wish some manufacturer would crowd fund a modern ld player😅
@@tom0900060 If Philips and Sony helped pioneered the LD industry, they could revamp the popular appliance by popular demand.
@@tom0900060would make more sense if they just used the original 5.1 theatrical mix on Blu-ray.
It's certainly strange why they feel the need to remix for Blu-ray when the Theatrical mix was also great.
Man, you're taking me back to the 90s. When I was a teen, I was obsessed with laserdisc. I had an awesome Pioneer player and a bunch of movies, like the $100 Criterion edition of RoboCop. I remember how loud and powerful LaserDisc movies compared to everything else available. I thought we'd never get anything better. Then, in 1997, DVD was released and 16 year old me saved up and bought another Pioneer player with The Usual Suspects, Eraser, and Street Fighter The Animated movie at launch. I still kept my LaserDisc movies, and noticed that they sounded louder and clearer than their DVD counterparts. Many LaserDisc movies weren't even available on DVD for years. Those were the good ol days.
Unfortunately, through the years of moving and divorce, I've lost most of my shit. I'm rebuilding in 4K Blu-ray now.
All hail the thx overlord.
As someone who has seen a screening of a theatrical print that was circulated, indeed, in 1993, I can definitely say that this LaserDisc has captured the same exact sound design beauty that other releases couldn't. Fucking amazing.
I watched it in a soundproofed room in early 94. The smaller, more concentrated environment - and, yes, the T-Rex scene, destroyed the Cinema instantly. 👍
@@BillReilly1979 Fuck yeah, let's go!
My dad has actually seen Jurassic Park in theaters in 1993. It blew his mind
Not just the sound (Laserdisc's DTS track actually has better LFE than the cinema DTS), but laserdisc also has a larger framing like the 35mm projection unlike the DVD, blu-ray and UHD. The laserdisc does not cut off the dinosaur heads at the top edge while the DVD, blu-ray (also 3D) and the UHD does. The Laserdisc and theatrical framing concentrates on the top part of the frame while the later masters push the image down and as a result crops out the dinosaur heads and snouts.
When this was released this was the best movie theater experience ever
The DTS theater was shaped like the skywalker theater at lucasfilm ….this presentation was the best cuz the movie was maxed out volume wise n the sub was earthshaking & ur shirt was moving with those deep deep bass
I wish movie theaters can be that loud again
In the same theater I saw saving pvt Ryan n it was like JP…the best
I’m planning on getting a laserdisc player for my birthday, along with the DTS copy of Jurassic Park and Apollo 13. Then me and the family can plan a movie night and watch those really great movies. All hail the THX overlord.
Well I got a laserdisc player, I got Apollo 13 but I’ve still yet to get Jurrasic Park. I’m also looking for Casper lol
Despite there being thousands of sealed discs still out there it's still a charm to break the seal on them all these years later.
It's when you start sniffing them to see what 1995 smells like that you need to start worrying... 🤣
I've got both the theatrical release and the director's extended cut boxed set of Aliens (and Alien) and they all look and sound so incredible that I never bothered getting them on DVD.
Enjoy that DTS Jurassic Park too. DTS LDs have the most amazing dynamic range, so much that your neighbours are gonna think they've got a T-Rex in their back yard. Haha.
um......I did open the jacket for Aliens and did smell it (and many others).......sooo ummm oops lol. Any interest in what I offered on your comment in the previous video? Also this should be in 4K but youtube is taking forever to convert........
@@bsgtrekfan88 "Any interest in what you offered in your previous video?"
I don't know what you mean. I thought we'd wrapped that up.
I might be thinking of somebody different but I am selling my demodulator right now as I have another one on order I figured I would offer it to you first if you are interested in it however when I get home I’ll check that video it might be somebody different I’m thinking of if that’s the case I do apologize for the misunderstanding
@@bsgtrekfan88 Yeah I definitely don't need another demodulator so you must be confusing me with someone else. I hope you remember who that was!
@@bsgtrekfan88 what type of laserdisc player do you own?
Alien and I think Alien 3 also had AC-3 Laserdiscs too. Fun fact: Alien has a native 5.1 sound mix because Fox originally intended to release the movie with MCA Sensurround 5.1 audio, but was scrapped before release. However, some 70mm prints of Alien still contain that 5.1 audio mix, and that is where the AC-3 soundtrack is sourced from. On another note, DTS discs of Alien 1-3 were planned, but were cancelled before release.
Cool. Never knew that about the DTS releases. I guess they would have tied in with Resurrection on Laserdisc. I know there's a Dolby Alien, Aliens and Resurrection which I have but I think Alien 3 is PCM stereo only.
They also cancelled the AC3 releases of the Indiana Jones trilogy, and the DTS version of "Pink Floyd: The Wall." which is sad, cause those would've sound AMAZING!
Alien Resurrection (which I totally hated) had been released on Laserdisc in Dolby Digital and in DTS.
So the UHD community over in the AVS forums has found buried in the LFE track is the ultra low effects often "nerfed" where there's a steep drop off at whatever point depending on whatever engineer decided for home theater. Well there's a complete work around and it brings those lower frequency bands back up to the theatrical levels its called BEQ! Cant wait to hear JP in DTS:X mix once I get the proper equipment to BEQ it. Check these links out! The bottom one shows the bass frequency drop offs before and after for Jurassic Park. The rumor has it the DTS LD version as you said might of been the the most intense version of this. That makes sense since it was the first DTS movie engineers probably weren't even thinking that they should worry about people blowing up home theater equipment and just took a direct port of that very LFE track from theater to home. This stuff restores it to that level on UHD, and its DTS:X to boot!

I have this LD and it is glorious. I remember working at an Electric Avenue and More in the 90s and the Cerwin Vega truck would use the LD for their demo. Absolutely phenomenal.

Digital Theater Systems
With the “Digitally Mastered” deep note (DVD)
I was sick filming this - when I say Codec I mean format..or decoder. Again I am not Techmoan...I hope these videos show my passion for the subject and enlighten others on the format ;)
I believe a lot of laserdiscs actually include the original theatrical soundtracks, whereas the movies might be remixed for other home video releases.
yes indeed but this movie...that scene especially lol just cant beat it for pure childhood vs adult joy
I owned the DTS Jurassic LD back in the day and it is amazing on a system that can handle it. :). Nothing compares in audio quality.
Indeed! It sucks because audio Isabel subjective and of course you have to be there to see it much like a picture quality inn people reviewing TVs online but as somebody who has seen the film multiple times both at home and in the theater I can tell you that I’ve never heard it sounds better than on this laser disk!
Not even DTS on DVD?
The end of this movie is phenomenal! Thank you for teach us
Hey trekfan I have had the AC -3 Dolby digital laserdisc of true lies I finally was able to get the DTS laserdisc and what a difference picture looked the same but the DTS audio was ausume just blew me out of my chair and this title was hard to find the DTS edition all hail DTS lords
Great Stuff ! I am a big L/D fan !! currently playing with a line magnetic tube amp / pioneer L/D player 2 channel experience is awesome.
Hell yeah, bro! Best scene choice!
Great video:)
Always loved the laserdisc better then dvd hope expand my laserdisc collection
Very nice! Id like to really start collecting Laserdisc. I own a few but I'd really like to start building a nice little collection and get some nice speakers... Subbed.
This movie is just still perfect.
Hello there! I just found your channel and your old videos of your YJ! I have a 1995 YJ Sahara edition, fully automatic with AC. I was just curious if you ever had problems with your speedometer and tachometer jumping randomly around while driving, and if so... Did you ever find a fix? From one YJ owner to another man, your channel is pretty cool!
Kyle Stengl thanks for the kind words. Sadly mine was totaled but I never had those issues. Besides google and CZcams searches it might just be a bad connection or the gauge is failing.
Laser disc are awesome love my player
GREAT REVIEW !!!!
I played that last Trex scene so many time too. It was my demo material. Nothing compares at all.
Thanks for showing the aliens laserdisc ac 3 Dolby digital I just got the same copy brand new still sealed thanks!
It deserves it’s own video but I was kind of rushing when I filmed this man had to include it as they both arrived the same day check out my other you laser disk videos there are many more coming
Blows my mind that my 1992 pioneer player spits out a dts signal, ( no ac3 ) but to have THE ROCK sound as good as the bluray is nuts. Lucily my 2000 yamaha amp was a beast.
The criterion laser disk of the rock that I have not only looks just as good as a DVD but sounds way better than the Blu-ray I know that the resolution isn’t fair but the transfer is a phenomenal print
I do have a review/video of the rock coming soon
Can you do an audio comparison between the LD vs the 4K UHD!? Would love to see some measurements ... there’s som info claiming the 4K UHD has the same exact DTS track mix from the laser disc to DTS:X but then there’s some people saying it’s not... I’d love to get my hands on a laser disc player just because they look so cool... and I love those start up sounds for DTS and THX... you’re right they don’t do that stuff anymore
if I had the disc sure ;)
The 4K DTS:X sounds amazing but I've digging into the old laserdiscs and DVD releases and that DTS surround theatrical mix is something else apparently. What baffles me why don't the studios just include multiple tracks on disc, like Alien on 4k , has 3 different mixes on the 4K disc. I'd really wanna hear that DTS mix from laser disc tho.
Yup, I have my Laserdisc player with coaxial for AC-3 with external decoder and optical to my Pioneer receiver to display on a 4K upscale. The video can always be filtered and upscaled. It is fantastic. The audio is a different story. Luckily DTS optical carried over which my receiver accepts. AC-3, I had to buy a decoder but it is worth it. Top gun on AC-3 and Jurassic Park....Luckily I live in the Hill Country of Texas. Kids love the sound of the movies. I wish they made theatre sound on Blu-Ray etc for home use. Laserdisc was made for home use and small theatre like Pizza Hut, Chucky Cheese.
Qué proyector y conexión está usando? Luce fantástico.saludos desde España
- sorry for the language - was riding high on FINALLY doing what I sought after for many years ;)
Unfortunately, there weren’t many titles on LD with DTS.
Especially for Paramount (only Titanic (1997) gets one due to 20th Century Fox involvement) and the lack of Warner Bros. (like Twister (1996) and The Matrix) and Sony titles (which would have given Godzilla (1998) a money for the audio department).
Even if certain players have digital output (which is one of the advantages compared to Dolby Digital AC-3 setup, in addition for significantly higher bitrate while keeping the dynamic mix like the theatrical masters), they are still treated as a luxury release for those who have the DTS decoder and the 5.1 home theater setup (which is rare in that era).
That sounds well good.
Maybe better than dvd 📀 wow. And the picture not to bad too
🤯LOUD🤯
I have a 90 Panasonic laser disc player. Still working like new also a 2001 DVD player by Panasonic weighs 40 pounds. Still going strong.
Not to bring out a fine point but the theatrical print of Jurassic Park was not DTS AC3 but the 5.1 DTS on CDs using the code on the film itself to be synchronized.
Amazing 🎉 hi frommchile
Hello from Cape Cod, MA!
What's incredible and bizarre about the laserdisc system is that in 1993 we already had high definition, yet it was a total failure. yet it took off with dvd. I just don't get it.
I still have all the DTS dvds 📀 that was released 1996-2003
Though I lost my dts verison of the lost world 😟
I recorded the dts track on cd-r , the result is like the laserdisc !!! Anyway i can play it anywhere in a blu-ray player or dvd player with a coaxial or optical out.
Man, what I wouldn't give to have a listen to that DTS soundtrack. I have the Blu-ray and while it sounds great, I would love to compare it to the LD's theatrical mix. Of course, the speakers in my current 5.1 setup would probably get wrecked because they are pretty basic compare to yours! Lol
Speaking of LD theatrical audio, Iwas wondering do you have the Mission: Impossible AC3 laserdisc? I hear the mix that's on there is actually mixed differently and is actually MUCH more aggressive then the ones on the DVD and Blu-ray.
Anyways, thanks for the LD vids so far!
I don’t but I try and grab any LD that is in AC3 format but I’m reaching the end ish. Meaning I have the films I want but if it’s a good price I’ll pick it up. Many more videos to come! :)
also fly on out here Ill put whatever you want on ;) Everyone should hear this!
You never knew there was an AC-3 version of Aliens? Have you never been on the LDDB?
rob scott not this movie no
rob scott and I know I know I should have known. I was going off my younger knowledge :) but hey now I do and now i can enjoy it
@@bsgtrekfan88 great stuff and i like the video. Ive been buying LD since 94. Nice to see people like yourself still doing LD video's. Some ace versions of Aliens and T2 with what you're into 😊
In Disney has DVD Pitch Deep note cause THX Family before PIxar
Panasonic makes great players. Must have been a defective player. Even my 1990 panasonic lx-1000 LD player still works like day one.
it was the firmware - but honestly I find the last old gen Sony's before they went to shit and all plastic look fucking amazing and are still just as fast as others released today nearly 10 years later ;)
What projector are you using??
What country do you like in???? I have laser discs you can have.
I have the only sealed DTS copy left on the planet. THX Sticker intact. Also one open from 1994.
Thx Calibration makes Laserdisc the father of all that follows.
Are you saying that this version of the movie sonded better than then the blu-ray version. Wow I always thought that this format what's the best ever but I hear that nowadays from somebody who actually tested it and even seen the same movie Blu-ray and comparing it to both holy crap
As somebody who owns the film on every format it’s been released Anna I can confirm that the version in this video on laser disk does have more punch and more low-end of course the picture quality is nothing compared to Blu-ray but audio I would say definitely yes :-) of course it all depends on the equipment you are using etc.
Do return of the jedi CBS/FOX 1989 letterbox, I want you to, do it. play the ranco scene. You have been nominated to, do it. doing it.
1:09 WTF??? O_o! Good!
It's a shame DTS in the 4K realm can't compete with the juggernaut of Dolby. There's any DTS X. DTS was so much superior to Dolby's AC-3.
The picture quality of DVD is greatly superior to Laserdisc though. Letterbox is a big let down.
how about the lost world?
........SOON
still waiting
Don’t own a copy yet
I got a hold of one not too long ago. It sounds just as awesome as this.
@@bsgtrekfan88 Then how come you can have video?
I still keep LASERDISC its like a 35/70mm selling out to that all digital crap which is the same as home cinema its amazing cinema finally caught up with home cinema technology.. of course I'm taking the piss as an ex projectionist that no longer cares about actual cinema. All real 35/70mm JBL THX sound system cinemas are gone now in the United Kingdom, london is THX-less. All london has to show for itself is the crappy LIEMAX fake imax LIEMAE that they have that doesn't even have a baffle wall behind the screen that is why imax LIEMAX sound mixes suck and THX is the ruler.
I have same pressing LASERDISCS as shown in this video.
LASERDISC is WINNER for sound and bluray 4k is loser for sound as they are nothing more than a near field mix that sounds cheap and lacking real dynamic range as they make those shitty bluray 4k for those shitty soundbars.
I use professional cinema Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System with x107 JBL professional speakers. imax brags it has 44 and 10kw and that THX doesn't go below 40Hz seems strange it does here with 20kw THX.
LASERDISC RULES!
sorry but you complete wrong i work on sound and own studio my home to and have had long times home cinemas and laser D or old decoded sound does not even compare in dobly atmos and on bit rate data or dts -hd -x who said they making those for sound bars hahah go listen them on high end home cinema speakers and denon receiver and same goes with picture quality not talking about LD cause that crappy compared even to 1080p not 4k but 35mm for me its the past only true film that holds still up is 70mm
Here in Arizona, we rarely have any THX certified theaters and there is some in Tucson and it’s far.
Jurassic Park is fantastic also try the die hard trilogy on DTS it will wipe the map with the DVDs ad blueray also saving Private Ryan on laserdisc in AC Dolby digital will make mince meat out of the DVDs and blueray because of not being compressed and they changed the color timing so the laserdisc is the only way to see how it looked in theaters
@Jason Koestner I just wanted to ask a couple questions, Do you have a receiver that supports DTS HD or Dolby True Hd? Do you also turn off dynamic range compression on your Blu Ray player? And how is the color different on the Blu Ray of Saving Private Ryan? I think it was because the transfer was so good that it gave the impression that the color was changed.
My receiver handles both DTS and Dolby digital but for AC. -3 I have Yamaha rf demodulator from my Japanese pioneer 909 as to saving Private Ryan the sound and picture you get of the laserdisc was taken directly from the print and the sound is not compressed as on DVD or Blu-ray those soundtracks were made for home theater unit 's and the color palette was changed to give a colder even more desaturated than the original so that's the story with that I watch all my discs on 50 inch plasma if you have any other questions please check out culture dog Sam hatch's channel it helped me a lot so keep on spinning
My receiver is about five years old it’s a demon x4000. For modern equipment it does support both Dolby high definition and DTSHD.
@Jason Koestner I watch Culturedog a lot, good channel. I'm just saying with you of course is that do you turn off Dynamic Range compression on your Blu Ray player, does your receiver have the HD audio formats?
Yes Pete it is turned off when blueray is running
say again. we have trex dts sound. spare no money.
And now with Blu-ray and especially UHD Blu-ray, the only advantage of Laserdisc is the cover art.
Panasonic makes the best players.you just got a bad unit.

The LD is father of modern home theater dvd and Blu Ray 🙂🙂
