I canceled my pre order when i learned from Sonos that the Ace headphones ONLY work with the arc soundbar AND they stream in Bluetooth only not WiFi. I have a beam gen 2 which is one level below the arc and it won’t connect. Sonos answer was “as always we are upgrading our software” even though I was told the beam gen 2 did not have a powerful enough processor for the Ace headphones.
Shame on Sonos for introducing a product that is so limited to Sonos users without giving those details before hand.

    • @user-dh6kg3kg7f
      @user-dh6kg3kg7f Před 3 měsíci +1

I understand. I wanted that as well. But to be fair, Sonos gave those details beforehand. It is specifically mentioned in the product page, the user guide and explained to the press during their presentations. Well ahead of the release date that is next week. Concerning not supporting wifi and only using bluetooth. TLDR .. It's simply impossible to do that. No one has been able to pull it of. This is where expectation hits with technological limitations. Sony, Bose, Apple even Google. All their headphones are bluetooth only. You would think that with Airplay and Chromecast both Apple and Google would embrace wifi in their earbuds and headphones. But they haven't. Wifi is simply too demanding on battery and so far all of these companies consider the battery penalty too much.
Gaming and office headphones often connect wirelessly to the source device with a USB dongle. But even in this case, the headphones are isolated from your home wifi network. Again, the reason for this is that current wifi implementation is too demanding. So it won't solve the issue for us.
In short Home WIFI connected headphones do not exist nor will exist until wifi power consumption is solved. (its one of the priorities of future wifi)
But still Sonos implemented a workaround. The headphones have a module that connects directly with a Sonos soundbar. Similar to how headphones connect to the source device with a USB dongle. Thus, letting us take advantage of the most likely feature we would use anyway. And that is sending audio from our Sonos devices to the headphones.
I've been checking a lot about this. Qualcomm Snapdragon Audio will soon use BT + micro wifi solution but it will require a chipset on your phones and it won't solve the issue since the headphones would continue to be isolated from the wifi network. It will only help achieve high-res lossless audio and low latency on mobile phones.
Likely Apple is working on an audio chipset for upcoming apple headphones to address the now considered low audio quality in AAC codec.
But you can bet that whatever solution they come up with will be locked to Apple ecosystem. One of the key advantages of Sonos is precisely working relatively well across these other ecosystems.
In practice Sonos solution, despite its compromises is the one that works better across devices and ecosystems.
For instance, the Sonos Ace are the first headphones to support Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking on both Android and Apple devices. Sony is locked to Android. Bose uses it's own audio virtualizing solution that doesn't support Dolby Atmos.
Finally, the Sonos Arc works as a hub for any source, be it our Apple TV, your Xbox, NVIDIA Shield will provide Dolby Atmos + head tracking to your Sonos Ace. Something that is simply not possible to achieve with any other solution on the market.
So even if on release date your Sonos soundbar is not supported, you are better of with the Sonos Ace then anything else available now or likely the near future. Yes the Wifi situation sucks. But that's a limitation of traditional wifi that was not designed for smaller lighter devices like headphones and earbuds. We need to wait for reviews and hands on experience to see how the Sonos Ace sound and compare with others in ANC and other aspects. But other than that, they made the right decisions considering current technological limitations.

I hear you. But you would acknowledge that the headphone market is already fully saturated, and by the big players like Sony, Bose, and Apple too. Or if I'm in my home office listening on my Sonos One speakers I can't open Spotify and switch the audio over to the headphones? @user-dh6kg3kg7f Před 3 měsíci +1

Unfortunately, wifi headphones is not possible at all. Be it from Sonos or anyone else. Simply put, current Wifi technology was not designed for this. It constantly broadcasts information across connected devices and drains battery fast. That´s why no one has done it. All we have is BT and workaround solutions to do a direct connection between headphones and source device. Like office and gaming headsets connected to a USB dongle on PC. Or in Sonos case, a direct connection between the Sonos Ace and the Soundbar.
Qualcomm is working on a solution to use BT + wifi but it has similar limitations. It will use wifi to give higher quality audio and lower latency. Not broadcast the headphones to the network. czcams.com/video/-VU210Zz1Hk/video.html
So even for these upcoming solutions, you won´t be able to create a separate Zone for headphones.
But no other headphones do some of the things Sonos Ace can do. Such as spatial audio + headtracking from any source connected to a Sonos soundbar. (unlike Apple and Sony that only work with specific services or devices).
Support for Dolby Atmos and headtracking on both Android and iOS. (Sony only works on Android and Airpods Max only on Apple devices).
Also you get the best audio codec for Bluetooth. Aptx Lossless.www.soundguys.com/understanding-bluetooth-codecs-15352/
That requires connecting to a device with a Snapdragon audio chip. But at least there are USB dongles for that.
Like the eppfun LE Audio USB C Bluetooth 5.4 or the FMA120.
One thing Sonos does as well. It let´s comments section open.
IF this was Apple, Google, Microsoft and like Sony, this video would have comments disabled. :)
