Architect lamp pedestal base

- Using a swing-arm style architect lamp for a nightstand. The lamp needed to be raised up a bit more, so instead of using the flimsy base it comes with, I made a pedestal base that mounts on the nightstand to bring it to a good height.

My dad did something similar for me when I was a boy; instead of making a post to set on a table though, he put a hole in the bedpost itself and mounted the lamp to the bed. Worked flawlessly.
I was wondering why Matthias didn't do just that when he showed the final installation.

Here is a rather funny, but true story.... I have that exact same lamp that you have, and the base on mine broke years ago, just like yours. When the base broke long ago, rather than throw out the lamp, I put it in a box and stashed it in the garage, thinking some day I might get the urge to make some kind of new base for it. Well, years passed and about 3 years ago we were moving to a new house, and I found the lamp. With all the tasks involved in moving, I started to just toss it out. But instead I finally elected to just move it to the new house instead. Today, it's still in a box in the garage of our new house. I'm sorry to be so long winded but I just wanted to share the story with you and let you know that your video has inspired me to finally do something with the lamp. I might piggy back off part of your design, or come up with something a little different. The main problem is the base does in fact need to either be connected to something, or clamped down in order to keep it from toppling over. Thanks for posting the video. :)
Never knew Matthias would ever say fun and lathe in the same sentence. I wonder what he thinks now of miter saws, biscuits, and pocket holes! 😉

I'm always impressed by guys that can freehand a shape on the lathe. I always have to draw it out beforehand.
I do so agree about those plastic clamps for angle-poise lights. The original units had solid metal bases or clamps. The unit above my lathe I made myself in Aluminium.

if it was one of those long winded videos, few would watch it, youtube would not suggest it, and consequently, even you would not see it.
@@matthiaswandel I understand the changing times, though I don't like the change. But I disagree about me not seeing it, since my main feed is subscription notifications and not the algorithm recommendations. Again I realize that's where "the numbers" direct new viewers, but there are still real people who care about details.

I adore the look of finished baltic birch edges like that base. Especially how the light hits the grain in each alternating layer. I have a couple test pieces that put a round over or a chamfer on and gave them some oil and I can't help but pick them up and marvel at them at my desk.

I do the same thing with those arm lamps. Most of the time I don't even get them with a base. So I just drill holes for them. Works a treat.
All mine are used ones. I don't much care if the base comes with them.
@@matthiaswandel I've never bought one new. I think I've only bought one. But I bought that one because someone was using a Panavise Jr as a base on it and I wanted the vise for my collection. They managed to snap the pin off the lamp. Your video got me thinking about it so I fixed it. With a wooden dowel, of course.

I absolutely agree about the bases of these otherwise nice lamps. I have had two and the bases of both were unstable as new and broke after a while. So I made my versions of wooden blocks and still use one of these until today

So, the main advantage to your homemade lathe is that it can fling a part without destroying it. Just pick it up, chuck it back in, and continue on. LOL
I have a few of those articulated arm lights myself. A few with incandescent bulbs, and one with a magnifying lense, and round fluorescent bulb. Very handy.

I finally found a lamp like that from the thrift shop for 2 bucks and after having it for 2 minutes I started wrapping tape around the leg to make it tighter lol
I've made a few articulated desk lamps from wood. They work well and look great. Can be tricky finding what springs you actually need as it will vary with the type and weight of the wood.
One tip I picked up somewhere (heck, maybe Matthias): Use rubber bands instead or springs for testing, add or remove bands until the lamp performs as desired. Then you can measure the pull of the stack of rubber bands and get an approximation of spring strength needed.
I love swing arm lamps. It has been difficult to find ones that are high quality and constantly fall over or creep. Any on amazon is just hot garbage. I found one brand at work but they asked for $350 dollars for one which was really steep ask. It would probably work perfectly for the rest of my life though. I did find something middle of the road that I have been pretty happy with though. I think it was a cut above the $30 lamps on amazon and still worth the $90 price.
My Father would make all kinds of things around the house out of trash wood and cast off junk he found. After he was gone my mother replaced them with nice things that she really wanted...

I would not say it's weird. I love it. You did an excellent job. I think maybe Rachael may think it was less weird if the lamp base was the same color as the table?
Ironically, some of my favorite small clamps are the cast bases from vintage architect lamps.
I love those types of lamps and I have them where I can but some of the older ones just can't hold some LED bulbs, only very specific lightweight designs.
I took a similar approach to creating bases for my two lights, only not nearly as fancy.
For each light, I mixed up some concrete and filled a #10 can (think of a can that holds 3 pounds of coffee). Before the concrete had a chance to harden, I stuck in a length of PVC the diameter of the rod on the light and longer than the can was deep.
The concrete is too thick to fill the PVC
It's easy top move the lights anywhere I need them and I don't have to clamp down
I have two of these lamps, one with the clamp, but the other has a really heavy weighted, rectangular base unit. The weight is enclosed and impossible to see but it is 'really' heavy and has a storage surface on top...for pen, pencil etc. I'm about to re-build both as the bulb holder in one is showing signs of cracking so the second one mustn't be far behind, then I'll use LED bulbs. Great lamps though and been used heaps over many years.

My lamp was modified to retract and hung from a ceiling fan in my bedroom that had no light previously...no base in the way and I can aim it anywhere I need for tinkering (electronics and 3d printing)
I usually pick up those lamps in the thrift store for cheap. I made a neodymium magnetic base for mine

I also would just drill holes in wood to mount those lamps, often drilling right into the table or desktop!
Now if I can just find a way to make the springs work better!
I have a lamp like that, I think it is over 20 years old.
I had to change that crappy base once because it cracked, 2nd one is screwed with 4 screws to the desk and it's holding just fine :)

Back in 1991 Matthias made a base for a swing arm lamp. In 1991 I made finger paintings and mud pies.
The real story here is Matthias casually showing a wooden screw with internal thread pairing like it's no big deal...
I'd love to see you making one of those lamps out of wood from scratch.

Like Matthias says all you need is a hole that pin fits in. Though I have one of those lamps and the pin is busted off of it. I just fitted a dowel where the pin should be. We'll see if it works, or not.

You had the chance to fit the base precisely in that corner but you went for uniform sides. I feel like with that lip you're going to get all sorts of things stuck in that crack.

Most certainly fun to watch. In general I like your ‘learn in the process’ approach, this time I thought wait, he must know with all his practical experience that that base is to small to properly function, is this for didactics? Kept my attention to the end! Why does it appear as weird? At first glance the (second, or lower) sphere on top of the cube looks a bit out of place. You never would see this applied in such manner in architecture or furniture. (it would look odd on the bed for instance.) Bed and pedestal are both from wood, and look alike in style. Makes the pedestal sort of family to the bedpost. I can however see you might have envisioned this as a sort of fremdkorper add-on. Like an artificial leg. Quick way out could be to paint the whole thing (not the lamp) black, or more spicy, orange perhaps. I think your design (shaping) deals very well with the (aesthetic) problem of asymmetry. (being the pivotal point not centered in the middle of the shape of the leg(s) of the lamp) From a design point of view you could argue that when painting, the side table should be painted as well. Having owned such an architect lamp for many years, I share in your appreciation, and yes the original clamp is not too strong, but having it detached quickly was I guess preventing damage to the lamp itself. My lamp was replaced by the table lamp from Flos, which was designed by Antonio Cittero. (if you google it, it might end up on a wishlist perhaps, it has a similar cantilever mechanism and is quite elegant.)

Why don't you turn the timber running on the bevel with a gouge and cut the wood instead of scraping it a lot less pressure on your cool lathe you'll get a lot cleaner cut and less sanding.

While watching this I just realized that none of my articulated lamps (6 of them) still have their original bases, or ever had. I also made custom bases for all. I also have one that is now free standing because I made a oval hollowed wooden base with a 2,5 Kg dumbbell plate weight in it. (sand didn't work as well) Just so I can move it, have the articulating feature, but never have to clamp it down. Also I put brass bushings in the holes and over the pin of the lamp with some grease for smooth movement.
Great piece.
It might "fit in" better if the stand matched the bed post.
The bottom half of the stand is almost a perfect match already.
3:26 here it looks like you could just make a hole in the bed rest column, right next to where lamp is and call it a day :D
Yeah, I have quite a few of those arms... the arms are great, the clamps that comes with it is just some bs. I made a hole on a table to use one as support for a tablet, and I'll probably do something similar to put a tablet on the kitchen to watch stuff while cooking and doing dishes.
If you make the hole just the right size for it to also fit the plastic sleeve that comes with it, then it can move pretty well... first attempt I just made a whole to tightly fit the metal part directly and then it started squeaking on me like heck. xD

I find the design of **Anglepois lamps** strangely beautiful - prefer the original design but much more expensive 🙂
As a bonus - this engineering has also been incorporated into some computer monitor stands . . .

Years ago, I made a base for one of those lamps by filling a 3 pound tobacco tin with concrete. It stayed with my household goods until my marriage. Then it got left behind during a move. Maybe, it just wandered off and got lost.

Have you considered just drilling a hole into the top of the post at the head of the bed?
Not related to this video, but I've been looking to build a dust collector and I recently got a used 30 something year old rooftop extractor fan, which is basically a three phase motor with an impeller on it.
Using it would save me a lot of work as I would only need to make a housing for it, but I only noticed it is a 1kw motor after I got it home. I was judging it to be 3 to 4kw based on its size, but it turned out to be a two speed motor, making it larger.
So I was wondering what your gut feeling is about it, is it powerful enough for a central dust collector? The impeller is quite large at slightly over 60cm across and the motors higher speed is less than 1000rpm. I don't have any information about the air flow of the impeller, just the motor info.
You need at least 3000 rpm. Your motor runs much slower than that.

When you say the bases of those lamps are crap, do you mean their ability to stay put? I have a bunch of those same style of architect lamps, and most of the ones I have include holes in the top plate so you can screw it down. Almost like they know the little clamp thing isn't that great.
How about using that swing arm lamp as a guide to build your own one out of wood?
Idk, I got no issue with the base, it's super solid once you tighten in to a desk.

3:52, a product made in 1991 by Matthias and still works and looks just like when it was made. I don't think you can tell that about some stuff made in 2021 by companies, No wonder we have so much waste disposal.
