Texas Hill Country Overland Trail

- We celebrate our 1 year anniversary checking out the Texas Hill Country using an overland trail map provided by one of our friends. This was a great trip to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of life, while being safe during these trying times. We highly recommend checking it out if you are wanting to get away while staying safe. The Texas hills and the way the rocks were cut out along the trail were amazing. You might even have to navigate around some cows!

I know I’m late to the party but that was bad ass. I love to do something like this!
Nice little town Fredericksburg….the Hill Country in Texas is great..
Wife and I did this trip memorial weekend. Started in Marble Falls to Mason and ended in Fredericksburg. Nice relaxing trails! Did a pit stop at the Llano River for a quick dip with the kids. Don’t forget Coopers BBQ in Llano!
Sounds like a great time!
Cooper's BBQ is in llano
@@jodygeistweidt4367 yup your right. 👍🏼
Just telling you ecause you said mason
Hello - we're out here in Marble Falls - may I ask: from where did you begin in Marble?
what a great video. I have a Toyota 4Runner and can’t wait to take my wife. I am new to overlanding and this looks perfect for both of us. Thank you for sharing.
Have fun! It's a beautiful little trip.
Thanks for the map!! Definitely checking it out with the family!
Thanks for the map! My cousin lives off of Lower Crabapple Rd, I may take the last part of the trail to his house next weekend coming from 2323.
I live like an hour from this route and never knew about it. Thank you
Happy Anniversary !!!!!!!!!!!!
Another great video. I love the river you came up to. Great narrative of your trip.
We really appreciate your support. Thank you so much!
Was really looking forward to seeing y'all cross the James River
Nice trip. Y’all from Texas so you know you need the roof and AC😂😂😂😂😂😜
Lol we totally didn’t think it would be as bad as it was lol what we DIDN’T show was the numerous times we had to find shade under a tree to get out of the sun. We looked at each other and said never again! 🤣🤣
Rock Solid Rig 🥵🤣
we live right near there and need to this!
This is awesome! I'm trying to take baby steps for off-road trails and this looks like something I'd be comfortable trying out for my first (also helps that it's in the same state). Definitely going to subscribe to y'all!
Awesome, thank you for the sub. What do you drive?
@@RockSolidRig 2019 Cherokee latitude, but it's the fwd model
Great vid thanks for the share 😁
Thank you! We loved this trail despite the heat and no top on! We had to make a lot of stops in the shade. Hopefully others will be more prepared than we were 🤣
Great video were going this Sunday but from Mason to Fredericksburg
Thank you :) Have fun and stay safe!
Love that route. Have done Marble Falls to Mason multiple times. One of these days I need to get the second half from Mason to Fredericksburg done as well.
We need to do the second half as well :)
@@RockSolidRig the half you did is my second half and the half I did is your second half. :) Combined we've done the entire thing. Lol
@@austincableguy How was "your" first half? Going to try this out on Saturday. Trying to figure out which place to start. Driving from Austin so we could do either.
@@greysonmedina553 we love it, have done it 3 times now and always just end up eating lunch in Mason and the highway back to home.
I think I did this trail at night one year when I supposed to pick up friends back from oktoberfest , its almost pitch black at night there, I was in car gps didn't work that night , thanks for video
I just saw you guys yesterday!! We were in that orange Jeep air-ing down. Good for you guys!!
Where did you see us at? Orange jeeps are Josh’s favorite!
lol airing down for that trail??? yall jeep junkies are something else i tell you what lol
LOL BRO.. Airing down? AIRING DOWN? For what? You make me laugh dude.
I have been going to James river since I was 5 years old, that was over 40 years ago,way before CZcams and the net,I never thought James river would become so popular and end up on CZcams,my Dad used to take my sister and I camping out there, the bluff at 6:44 I believe is culligans bluff,I have a Polaroid picture of me my sister and my Dad at the base of it from 1986,I have a picture of us standing in front of the bat cave way before the local government took it over, there used to be an old barn and ranch house where the star ranch hunting resort is,my Dad used to know a guy that owned some property out there,we used to camp under a big sycamore tree up the river from where the star ranch is now,the tree has since been washed away by a big flood,at the next river crossing there is a small bluff overlooking the river, there is a large diamond shaped rock that we used to shoot at with guns and a homemade cannon my Dad made,I now take my son and daughter to James river,I hope they get the chance to do same one day,I have many great memories at James river,it’s a very rugged beautiful place, every part is private property except the road
This looks awesome! Can you share the destinations you entered into the GPS along the way?
some things in life takes a while to get to something good
Appreciate you uploading this was debating on heading there from Houston. But looks like it wasn't what I thought it was
How’s it different from what you thought?
@@alanthesalamander2327 far less trail than I was thinking. Looks like its just a bunch of back roads
That's pretty much exactly what it is, no obstacles or anything challenging. Just a nice drive through some ranch roads.
I went on this trip yesterday. It was really hot yes!
We really underestimated the heat when we went! Not making that mistake again!
@@RockSolidRig haha I was prepared. I check weather beforehand. Did you go yesterday? I don't recall seeing your Jeep ;D
We were there early in May :) but we tried it topless and that was not a good idea lol
Looks awesome, getting ready to do it over the weekend. Trying to plan things to do in fredericksburg but I'm not sure how much time to give myself. How long would you say it takes with all the stopping? We plan stopping a few times to take in the views as well.
It took a good 4 hours to do about half of it. The earlier you start the better since it’s getting to be so hot :/
What is the best route from Fredericksburg for a round trip returning the same day???
Sure enjoyed the video. Do y'all know if the part of the trail out of Mason north of what is in this video more dirt roads? I'm new to this and would like get out a little. I have a full size stock GMC x31. Also hoping to find trails for camping as well.
Very cool! Thanks for the map. how do I get this map on iPhone Apple Maps?
How long did it take you to get from Fredericksburg to Mason via this route. We are here now amd want to try it
Nice JKU, what size of lift you have on it.
Did you post the actual entrance address for this route?
Hey we went yesterday but i forgot to download the map and i didn't have signal will try it again next time it was really fun tho.
Glad you enjoyed it, my wife and I aren't big into overlanding but it's a nice change of pace every now and again. We're planning another big bend trip to do some relaxing.
How do you download the map? I click on it and it just comes up in web browser. How do you actual download to be able to zoom in and see turns etc
Thanks for posting! Do you think there would be any issue making it in a newer 2wd 4runner? Were there any restrictions from dipping in the water?
There were no areas we had to utilize 4wd. There are no restrictions I'm aware of, we went through the James river crossing a couple different days and there were always people in the water. One day we saw a good sized group with chairs and canopies setup in the water hanging out.
@@RockSolidRig thank you!
@@beagleguy6164 no problem at all, it's a very enjoyable ride. I hope you enjoy it!!
Coming from New Braunfels off Hwy 71, is there a place at the beginning to unload a side by side? Want to take the CanAm on this trail if possible. Thanks for sharing this trail looking for more in Texas to run.
It's all ranch roads, unless it's all street legal I'd advise against it. There isn't really anywhere public to park and offload and leave a truck and trailer.
@@RockSolidRig Bummer! Anyone know of some good ATV trails to run in the area?
So I clicked on the link that you provided for the map and all the way points but do you have the actual GPS coordinates for those way points? it does not show it on the map. And I would like to add those way points by GPS coordinates to my vehicles navigation
The map we had was uploaded by someone else and was very rudimentary. We plan to do the whole thing again sometime and map it all in Gaia with specific waypoints for anything of interest.
What time of year do you recommend to do this? Want to go when the water is low. Heat isn't an issue because I don't have a vehicle with removable top.
Anytime of year is beautiful in my opinion, to avoid higher water I wouldn't go during spring or after a good long rain.
This video is super awesome! So a buddy and I are doing this route and my question is, how do I plug and play that map you have posted with a link (the Google link). I would so appreciate the feedback. 🙏🏼 thanks !
Thank you for this question! We don’t have link for a plug and play. However you can try our friends over at Jeep Around Texas, they have a link for the loop but I am not sure if it includes this trail as well. www.gaiagps.com/public/MmUcg7y0C1ddgL9fGpEVKH2I/?fbclid=IwAR2m1ByXjUADs5QnK5WPrvYOD2lcn0MVBONh6oGAvipRLMY4eWejjF_7jF4&layer=GaiaTopoRasterMeters
@@RockSolidRig thanks for the reply, I really appreciate that
We might be doing this route or something similar in a few hours. We have been wanting to do this for a while but can never seem to get other Jeepers to want to do it. 🙁 We would be starting off from Leander.
Yeah most people we've talked with about doing it aren't super interested. Not your typical off road excursion for a jeep. We're almost always found crawling rocks but sometimes you just can't beat a nice scenic, relaxing drive. We'll just be making sure we leave the top on next time.
@@RockSolidRig What we want to do is drive the first half the first day.....stay somewhere....and then drive the second half the next day!
That sounds like a great plan! We had no idea what we were doing lol 😂 poor planning at its finest
@@RockSolidRig Our planning just looks good on paper! Lol Never works out the way we plan! 😉😂
This is the content we need more of. You guys have more links to your routes? Also, a cool thing to do is download the content of the map as a .KML file and import it into GAIA GPS if you didn't know that you could do that.
We didn't record this route when we did it unfortunately but I know a few people that have. Thanks for the tip, I've been trying to play around with Gaia a bunch since this video and we're starting to get the hang of it finally lol.
@@RockSolidRig yeah so used your link that took me to google maps route planner and then downloaded this to GAIA. It worked flawlessly and then I was able to even manipulate it more in GAIA and add waypoints and plan out that same trip from Houston where we live at. Thinking of staying at DosRios RV Park there on the Llano River. How did you guys like that spot as you drove past?
Is the map enter active? It comes up for me but can’t find the GO tab to start the route.
The map is not interactive. We had to plug different locations in along the route to approximate the drive. I believe the CZcams channel “Jeep Around Texas” has a more updated version that might be interactive.
Would this be okay for a 2021 jeep cherokee latitude 4x4?
Absolutely, it's basically ranch roads and very relaxing.
Hi, how long take this route from Fredericksburg to Mason ??? Thanks
Really hard to say, we stopped a bunch to take pictures and video. Lots of people did the entire loop in a day.
Hey they is there any spots where you could spend the night for people that have roof top tents? Thanks
Pretty much everywhere is private land you'll be on. It's farm and ranch roads and many of the owners definitely aren't ok with people staying.
@@RockSolidRig yea I figured even toward the end where you showed the river. Seemed like there flat areas there that was not on someone’s property. Thanks for the response
How fast do you go on the trails? I am new to off-roading and was wondering.
It's all dependant on conditions and the trail. Really hard to answer. Sometimes barely 1mph others 20+
@@RockSolidRig appreciate the feed back, i just came back from BBNP and i was going 30 at one point. I will prob slow it down next time.
@@xxcarlosxx16 so long as you're comfortable with the speed and there's not one posted that's fine. Lots of space to open it up at BBNP. Were you aired down at all?
@@RockSolidRig I was not. another newb mistake on my end. i am using 255/85/r16 toyos M/T, i didn't notice any tire damage but i now know to air down at least to 20 PSI. ( i think)
This looks great! I'm looking at doing this soon. Do you need an OHV permit for the trail?
Nope, it's all public roads and ranch roads that go through others property. Watch for cattle and always try to be respectful of the landowners and this will be something everybody can enjoy for a long time to come!! Let us know when you make the trip and how you liked it.
No since it's not a trail, it's roads
This route actually seems a bit better if you don't want to be driving all day to get there and do the route and than back home. Other wise stay over night and than do the route.
I was looking for a place for two wheel SUV to overland and maybe this place might work. Thank you.
You will absolutely be able to do this in your SUV. Enjoy!!
@@RockSolidRig Thank you ~
I clicked on the map but how do you create the driving directions?
We had to select different locations along the route to drive to and watch the map. Since it’s a route that was created (not by us) it isn’t a route that you can get driving directions off google maps. There may be something on Gaia gps that you can download a gpx file onto the app that you could track but it won’t give you actual driving directions ☹️
www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1MC7yCkUrFhSGMAhl0oMZr-vFQr4&ll=30.581893852605734%2C-99.20934894566602&z=11
Are there any places to camp along the trail?
Most of the land you'll be on is private but there are some campgrounds and places to stay all around the hill country.
@@RockSolidRig ok great, ty!
Is this a public route?
Yes, the roads are all public but private land on either side like much of Texas.
I watched the entire video from start to finish.. Where is the trail? I see 90% paved road and a little gravel road.. Is this a real trail?
It's just a very mild overlanding trip and is a very popular loop around the Hill country.
Okay moving from Colorado to the area is going to be a big let down I see
@@Mike_hocksbig69 there are off road parks to go wheeling but you are absolutely going to be disappointed as far as overlanding would go. Nothing in Texas that will compare to all the stuff to drive in Colorado.
Was your 4x4 needed?
Not at all, it's a very scenic easy drive.
Rock Solid Rig Ty love the Channel!
@@MTMT7777 thank you for watching!! I'm always happy to hear people love what we're doing.
Can you make it to wild horse draw in hudspeth I have 40 acre 0 like to get some pictures of an epi willing to pay for It
Is there a way to export this trail to Gaia?
We have a friend who has his route in Gaia, let me find his link and I'll get it posted.

This was created by "Jeep around Texas", you can find them on CZcams and Facebook.
@@RockSolidRig Wow! Thanks a ton!
@@soundlive7 no problem, let us know how you liked it!!
Would you recommend this route for enduro motorcycle?
Absolutely, it's just ranch roads. You are basically on private property the whole time so please be respectful of the owners and watch for cattle.
@@RockSolidRig AWESOME 🤙🏼thanks!
@@elmert84 not a problem, hope you have a blast.
Awesome. Can't wait to start going here. TY
"Overland trail" my butt. You could drive that with a sports car it's so well paved
I'm not sure if you watched the video or you're just being facetious, the first bit coming this direction is paved but you quickly move onto ranch roads and water crossings that I assure you no sports car would like to drive through. Definitely not hardcore overlanding or rock crawling but that's not what everyone is into.
@@RockSolidRig lol even a Toyota corolla can make it through this trail no problem...
@@alvinmc5593 right now absolutely. When the water is up? They can if they want but nobody would recommend it. Nobody is saying this is a difficult or hard drive to make. We aren't telling people not to do it.
