    I recall how haunting and ethereal the original Wicked Games was. Violet Orlandi's re-imaging of it not only brings that all back, but her voice adds layers to the goosebumps.

    This version is so fitting to the lyrics, so perfect in the dark disdain for the antagonist, and the pain in the protagonist, it feels like it should be the original, while Isaac's version now sounds like a Lil Nas X cover, hokey and gratuitous.

    I love both. Chris Isaak's video version and now Violet's cover of it.She always nails any cover of any song. Her voice makes you just listen to her fantastic singing and not what you might have hated on the original. It naturally is better if you loved the original to begin with.

  • @sanderevers9396
    @sanderevers9396 Před 2 lety +10

    Something I noticed after multiple watches, including your reaction, is that the lyrics changed slightly. Chris Isaak sings "The world was on fire and no one could save me but you" both times, but Violet sings ""The world was on fire and no one could save me from you" the second time that lyric comes around. That detail alone makes the song completely different. I like when small details change and it just changed the entire meaning of a song. As a whole you're spot on with the analysis. Better than the original for sure.

    • @fredbarnes2049
      @fredbarnes2049 Před 2 lety

      Oh ok. Somebody said something about changing lyrics on Violet's channel, but I didn't know what. That does make a difference

    • @osafitch3959
      @osafitch3959 Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for pointing that out - I agree that the subtle change of one word ("from" instead of "but" the second time the line is sung) makes a big difference, and it makes the song much more powerful. Also, it seems to me that there may have been another subtle change in the lyrics. There is a background refrain in Chris Isaak's original ("This girl is gonna break your heart") that sounds to me like it may have been changed to "This fall is gonna break your heart" in Violet's version, where "fall" would refer to falling in love. This might make it more relevant across many different types of relationships, which Violet often does in her covers. But perhaps I'm just hearing things in my old age. ;-) Cheers, Osa Fitch
      Edit: after listening some more, I'm pretty sure that the line Violet is singing in the background refrain is "This world is gonna break your heart" - it's definitely not "This girl ..."

  • @mmasque2052
    @mmasque2052 Před 2 lety +1

    The song really suits Violet’s voice and range. The minimalist video just further enhances the haunting aspect of this song. Whether The original or this one, it’s a song about obsession: “I don’t want this, I REALLY don’t want this, but I can’t help myself.”
    When you say “She’s pissed,” you’re only half right. She’s mad, but at herself. Listen to the lyrics. Listen closely. This isn’t what you say to somebody you’re enraged at. This is what you tell yourself when you know you’re making a serious mistake but you know you’re going to do it all the same.
    On a side note, you need to listen to Halocene and Violet’s cover of Muse’s Uprising. Just listen to it.

    The first time I heard this song, it was not the original, but the one from Ursine Vulpine ft. Annaca.
    That one was so good and unique, it did not even occur to me for a long time, that it was just a cover. After I found out, I listened to the original, and I had the same exact feels as you did, the lyrics are incredible, but the instruments, the video, the tone and the general feel of the song is just not fitting.
    Both Ursine and Violet fixed the song extremely well! You pointed out all the reasons why Violet's is so great! Give Ursine's version a listen too sometime, absolutely worth it!

    Old Skool Nerd, thank you very much for this reaction! (This is a long comment.) My wife and I have been Patrons of Violet's since early 2019, and really like her music. I watched Violet's video and it was great, but something seemed off. Then I watched Chris Isaak's original video of the song (the one where he's rolling around on the beach with the female "meat robot") and thought "Ok, this must be what the song is about". But the cognitive dissonance didn't go away - meat robots were not the focus of Violet's video. Then I watched your reaction video all the way through and the light came on in my head (because you made it crystal clear): the problem was not in Violet's video! The problem was in the original video, where the video was poorly suited to the lyrics. Then I re-watched Violet's video, the cognitive dissonance was gone, and the impact was ten times bigger than the first time - it hit me like a Mack truck, and I've been walking around all afternoon with a case of the "feels". Again, thank you! Cheers, Osa Fitch

    I didn't see Chris Issac's music videos until well after his time, we were just crazy poor and if it didn't show up on one of our 3 channels or on VHS we didn't see it. I like Chris Issac's voice, but I also grew up listening to classic country and "Oldies", until I was a teenager and a friend introduced me to Rush and my mind was blown. I remember Metallica's James Hetfield saying he was greatly influenced by Chris Issac to improve his singing, which made a huge impact on the Black album.

    This is sooo good. Violet's voice is better on this than Chris'. Oh yeah I was 1st to comment. Hmm I already caught this on Violet's channel, but I wasn't really thinking about it. If you've seen her song "My Poltergeist" it seems she had a really messed up relationship after her mother died, maybe even abusive. At least that's what I got out of it. I wonder if this is about that? Extremely great reaction. Not just good. Very insightful. I completely missed the the diss in the song. And oh yeah after I watched "My Poltergeist" I wanted to go looking for the guy. Around here it's cornfields not swamps, lol!

    The best version I ever heard of this song came from Leo's friends, Hannah and Rebea. Until now! Violet is amazing. I have been a fan of hers for 2 or 3 years and pretty much any song she covers she blows the originals out of the water. I find it so interesting that cover artists that I have been a big fan for a while and you come along and also are a big fan of these same artist. Leo, The Warning, Liliac etc. Though we did discover Plush at about the same time. You and I have much in common. I am not quite as south as you but I am from and still live in Virginia. I consider myself Southern.

    Also, this is why you have covers sometimes. Someone makes a different version of a song that may or may not be closer to the main material with a different performance that you will prefer over the original for whatever reason. My examples will include Leo Marrachioli. I cannot stand Katy Perry songs, they are just not something I personally would choose. But I do like his versions of her songs. Like I don't like Justin Bieber, my choice. But I like Leo's version of "Baby" by him.

    Violet has a exquisite voice I liked this better than the original which I liked, I wasn't a huge fan of Chris Isaak but he had a couple okay songs. I was prob 25 or 30 when the original came out, and didn't see the secsy music video for several years, also I wasn't raised religious so my perspective was much different than yours on Chris Isaak. I never heard the negative things to influence a youthful mind. It was just a break up song to me with a sorta cool steel guitar sound. Great reaction though, great points on her vocals and attitude showing.

    I can yodel and what Chris Isaak does is not yodeling. He does a break to go into falsetto, which is entirely different.
    My parents played the Grand Ol' Opry, the Porter Wagner Show, and Hee Haw when I was growing up. While I never became a fan of Blue Grass or Country and Western, it didn't scar me emotionally, as it seemed to have done you.
    I didn't recall ever seeing the video, so I stopped watching your review to see this "porno" you referred to, before finishing your review. Since I was in my late 20s when it came out and the supermodel in the video was dating Chris Isaak at that time, I don't recall feeling an urge after watching it, but I do now recall seeing part of it, once or twice. It was completely forgettable to me and given the content, was only played later in the evening, since it depicted them having sex on the beach and even MTV had some constraints at that time.
    Violet often finds a way to make old or "less than" songs much better by putting her spin on them. That said, we're gonna have to agree to disagree about the meaning behind her version. I have seen that song performed in many iterations of "The Voice" and other singing competitions, along with multiple versions on CZcams. It always goes back to the same thing. The original lyrics tell the whole story and her version follows that as well, in my opinion. The singer starts out as if they were blessed to have met the person, then angry, then forlorn. Other than a Metal version which was angry the whole way through and where they used the phrasing of the middle of the song in the beginning and the end, as well, all the versions seem to have the same message to me. But then again, your review seems to be more hung up on the "sexy video" version of the song, which came a few years after the song was released. While I disagree with your interpretation, I did go on Amazon and buy Violet's version, the original and a version by HIM. I stopped looking after 4 pages of versions.
