KoAloha Mango Series Overview (with Koa/Mango Comparison)

  • The KoAloha Mango series is back and better than ever... Mango is one of the most sustainable woods used in furniture and instrument maker to emerge in recent years. It's slighty darker character than Koa sets it up perfectly with KoAloha who traditonally produce sonically massive, bubbly and bright ukes. Putting this design with Mango makes for an interesting fuller bodied but quite literally fruitier tone. What do you guys think?

    I’m liking the sound of Mango more and more. It has the warmth but also a brightness that I enjoy.

    Dang ur hide....I was just about to put my 2018 KCM-00MG up for sale on Reverb and I think you talked me out of it...I've got a case of arthritis as well as trigger fingers so I was mostly using my tenors, BUT after seeing this doggone video I'm really thinking I should keep it, if for nothing, because it's a Koaloha and it's a mango ( which does sound glorious as u said ) ...Plus, I would lose money and then I'm sure I would regret the whole idea. So I'm honestly happy as heck I saw this video and happy as heck I've NOW decided to keep my 2018 mango !!!! Thanx a million, sorry so long, and God's blessings from Texas !!!!!

      It would have landed on a soft cushion or my chubby love handles... The uke would have been fine. No need to worry 😅

    I have the mango in concert and the tenor in koa. To me, these wood choices are ideal. To my ears, my mango is slightly brighter and my koa a bit warmer (relative to t heir sizes and tunings, of course). However, here it seems the koa tenor is brighter than the mango. GAH! As for which soprano to buy, your guess is as good as mine. I'd ask Alex what he thinks!
    Thanks for featuring my favorite ukulele brand and my favorite uke.

    To me the Koa has the warmer sound similiar to a spruce top guitar with rosewood back and sides. The Mango is more like a spruce top guitar with mahogony back and side. Bottom line is you need to have both!

    Alex, you crack me up...you get to pronounce things however you want! :D I am with you, the concert mango was the best. And...that koa tenor was pretty glorious too! Thanks! :)

      Let's face it - whether it's Mango, Koa or a mixture of the two: you can't go wrong with a 'Ko A Lowar

    Annoying question Alex, but any thoughts on when these are coming back? (The Tenor is sold out, I see...but I am quite keen on it!)

    • @SouthernUkuleleStore

      The end of the year is the projection... KoAloha told us last week that they are doing Koa now and for the next spell, the Naupakas and finally mango which would be October onwards... This could always change but considering that the last mango batches were 18 months apart: I probably wouldn't put a date on your calendar.
      Sorry

    Love your vids. I saw in another video you said Pono started mango. I have a Pono bamboo. Is it pretty rare? How good are Pono overall? I love it but it has a truss rod and low G. Just a weird but great instrument

    Desperate for one of the tenors, I think they sound great. Once these have gone could it be two years before you get them again?

    • @SouthernUkuleleStore
      @SouthernUkuleleStore  Před 3 lety

      Who knows? I clearly didn't expect to wait two years this time 🤣
      I think KoAloha build cyclically so it's impossible to know what is around the corner. They will probably surprise us with naupakas for the first time in years next month. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Different builders using different types of mango on instruments with different bracing, top thickness, build styles etc.
      There's no specific reason... You just like a good ukulele 🤷🏻‍♂️

    @ian1969uk Před 3 lety

    How do these compare to the Manako?

    • @SouthernUkuleleStore
      @SouthernUkuleleStore  Před 3 lety +3

      The KoAloha ukuleles are lighter and less polished... they have more of a raw projection and less of the compression and balance of a Kanile'a. Ultimately it's exactly the same difference between a Koa KoAloha and Koa Kanile'a. They are just two very different interpretations of a Ukulele that do their own thing very well.
      The Kanile'a is definitely the more premium instrument because of the slotted head, armrest and the visual quality of the wood. The KoAloha is about 40% cheaper so In that respect both options are also attractive.
