it's been a wonderful and inspiring journey .
What an amazing Airplane
Thanks for letting us be a part of a fantastic build .
being disabled your energy and positive personality is a Boost to my Life.
Be safe n bless you .
Mr.Mike Patey.
Nobody released footage of Scrappy flying out of respect for Mike’s reveal, and I looked hard. You’ve got to love the aviation community, and I hope to be part of it soon. I’ve been flying a paraplane for over 20 years, but I’m far overdue for a bush plane!
I didn’t search for that but but I was thinking about that. It could be hard to keep that a secret without having your own airport.
@@Rickmakes - Not happy about it really. Should have released a flight vid as soon as he landed at Oshkosh. I mean I have only watched 30 episodes but those at Oshkosh saw it fly first. Subscribers should be first. Gonna write a letter to my MP and my Parrish vicar and complain ☹️ 🤪
This video is late. Plane flew few weeks back and video was already out by someone else. Look again
@@Rickmakes I got excited knowing that Scrappy was flying, and couldn’t help myself from searching! Others, and I were monitoring ATC, tail number tracking, etc. I’ve always loved bush planes, but I never thought I could get so immersed in the build of one.
@@Superrandomz768 I knew it was flying weeks ago, but I couldn’t find any videos.
I venture to say it's not often a 78 year old follower gets choked up watching an airplane build video, but this one got me. Congratulations Mike, aviation has grown a lot from your innovations and ambition. Looking for more videos.
I’m so glad mike took the time to give us this many videos on his journey of building this beauty. I’ve watched all of it and I loved every single second of it.
Watched every build video. Damn near shed a tear when he took off😭
I took my wife to Air Venture and let her guide me to what she wanted to do. Imagine the discussion when I saw Scrappy parked in front if the Garmin tent. Great meeting you Mike. Gonna miss the build process but excited to see what's next. Thank you for your energy, precision and being you. You motivate me to be perfect on my path to my PPL.
We all love that plane. It was awesome following the build process. Mike is a genius.... nothing else can be said. Truly one of the great minds of all time in aviation, and engineering in general. What an awesome aircraft! Back to work!
Okay Mike, its time to get back to work. There is much video footage that needs to be put out there. Then there is the prop redesign. Then there will be Draco-II. Uh but, no pressure its just the Scrappy Build fix we all need. I'm pumped after Oshkosh and need more so, BTW!
You keep being you Mike, I'm proud to share this time in space with a person like you. Godspeed..........
1:28 when you have to keep all your cars in your hangar because you didn't tell your wife about them
whoever that is (the guy letting mike use his hangar) has a sports car for every day of the week.
I am 70 years old and I have 6 children that I am extremely proud of, each and every one. They are the light of my life. Watching Mike (someone I have never met in person) and seeing his passion and his accomplishments as he brings his vision to life I certainly feel that same pride in him a father feels for his children. Thank you Mike for letting an old guy that has always loved aviation but never was able to be involved in it tag along on the ride of a lifetime.
Mike,
You’re killing me out here Brother!
Hoping you are still alive and well?
Need more wing reports!
Your projects are amazing and I’m living vicariously.
Thanks for all you do.
Like everyone who has watched scrappy since you showed us a bent frame! I simply just smiled when I saw her take off.Well done Mike!
BACK TO WORK!!!!
What a cool guy! I am a mechanical engineer, with almost 20 years of R&D experience, some in Aviation, and I find Mike just inspiring. The suspension in my humble opinion is the most amazing part of this build as it makes so much sense for taildraggers. The fact Mike is able to do everything by himself is just mind-blowing. Thanks again and fly safe!
BR from Israel.
To anyone complaining about people at Oshkosh seeing it first, that’s just it, we saw it first. No one saw it fly except the lucky few when he arrived. I saw it in person every day for a week and this is the first I’ve seen it fly. He owes you nothing but gives you everything and your going to complain? If you saw mike in person you would be amazed how awesome of a human being he is. For him to say he’s tired should let you know how busy he has been. Thanks for everything you do for the aviation community Mr. patey!
Mike I'm so glad to have had the chance to see Scrappy and say hello at Oshkosh. The level of precision and engineering is just mind blowing. It's also pretty inspirational to this engineer - I'm waiting for my Kitfox and can't wait to get in the workshop and build it.
What Mike Patey does in weeks, would take corporate America, years. A true engineer's, engineer! And, a hell of a nice guy to boot! Mike, Thank You! I don't have the words to describe how I feel about you, your work and your contributions! Back to Work!! :)
This project has built up a lot of experience and I definitely see that now there's a reference construction that can be used by others.
Since this is a search and rescue plane I would have expected it to have some reflective surfaces in bright colors, mostly to improve it being spotted in coordinated efforts or when on the ground so that others can follow up a first response easier.
@@ehsnils I get what you’re saying about visibility, point well made. I do think, though, that the fact that significant areas of the aircraft are bright orange and that the lighting systems are far from lacking might go some way towards indicating that it’s already been considered.
If we boot the Fed out of our lives, things will turn around in this Nation.
@@robm.4512 Bright orange is actually only working well in daylight, in the dark it won't help. Reflective surfaces means that they stand out when a search light is used. Or when you use a torch. Could be that you need to find your way back to the plane when it's dark - you might not be able to land on the spot where the rescued is but a bit away.
Just my perspective though.

So awesome to meet you at Airventure and talk about airplanes. Hope you have fun playing with scrappy!!! 💯👊👊
Scrappy is engineering Art .Thank God you had the opportunity and knowledge to build it.
It seems everyone at Oshkosh posted a video on You Tube about Scrappy. Loved all of them. Mike you should really be proud about you have done with scrappy. Can't wait to see your videos about the test you had to run for Scrappy to pass inspection.
YEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAWWWW! What a build! Thank you Mike, that has been an amazing journey, thank you for letting us come along for the ride!
Thank you Mike for allowing us to join you on the Build of Scrappy!! I also Thank You for inspiring My Son in his desire to become a Engineer.
Thanks for the videos mike ! My wife just got a kidney transplant here in salt lake and we have 4 weeks of recovery and your build videos are keeping me from going stir crazy !!!!! Keep it up can’t wait to see some more in-depth videos
This has been the best series that I have watched on CZcams.
Scrappy Search and Rescue Cub Mission complete. Congratulations! This is my favourite plane of all time.
It is so incredible to watch aviation history happening real time. Test platforms like this do so much to push the limits of what is possible.
Mike, as a retired NM State Trooper; and as such a trained SAR initiator I identify with your contribution to the search and rescue community and humanity! You just earned my greater respect for you, your work ethic and community involvement!
I don't own a plane but i have watched every video of Draco and the same for Scrappy.
I have checked few times a day about Scrappy flying since the start of EAA Airventure, and i even stood one night awake until the morning (i'm French) because of the storm and tornado alert few days ago by following the live of your friend Cory Robin. I felt very very concerned by what you accomplished Mike.
This video just brought me some tears of joy, because it is the reward of your hard work, and you are very successful in your project which went further than I could have imagined.
What an accomplishement you did there with your team, this is amazing, and how proud should be your family.
Enjoy the ride and stay safe !
Much love, you are an inspiring guy !
This is an amazing sight to see. Well done Mike!!
I have to say, I watched the "We're putting the wings on!" episode, then saw some other videos stating "Scrappy flew to OshKosh!" and I was like "Wait, what? Whey not video of it flying!"
Thank you for plugging this hole in my life.
Thanks for hustling and bringing it to Oshkosh. My son and I have watched most of the build videos and one of the first things he said when we got in the gate is "let's find scrappy". Wish we could have hung around til Saturday to meet ya.
Thanks for spending some of your time talking with us at Oshkosh. While I know you will be taking a break for a bit, my daughter and I will be looking forward to your next project while the two of us start tooling up for our first project. You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you. PS, my daughter has been showing off the EAA rib with your signature to everyone. It's her prized possession and her favorite moment from the entire week at Oshkosh; even beating out the night airshow and fireworks.
remember when we all saw that prop and thought how giant it was, yet looking at it on scrappy it looks on proportion, which really says alot about the size of scrappy that I don't think I've fully appreciated.
Well done Mike, what a mission, your engineering on your aircraft is incredible.
This world needs more Mike Pateys. It's an absolute pleasure to witness your visions become reality. I'm a big fan!
Mike - Very impressive what you've built - Not the plane, your approach to creating the plane - Scrappy is awesome. Your method and safety protocols are world class.
Mike Patey makes the ultimate "always leave them wanting more" videos! There simply aren't enough superlatives to describe the project, Mike Patey, and his team of family and friends involved in his projects and the making of these videos. His example makes you want to be a better worker, manager, family member, and lifelong learner!
For something I had nothing to do with, this week and these people , I feel like I've accomplished something wonderful just seeing all your teams work.
Thank you.
Amazing Oshkosh celebration of flight.
If I was making a 3d printed gallery of the busts of my heroes, you, Mike, would be on it. I have waited for a Scrappy STOL performance in a way I have not waited for anything so bad ever before.
I thought seeing Scrappy fly would be the greatest but I realize it’s not Scrappy but Mike that I enjoy so much. WWMD is my first thought every time I tackle a new project. Thanks for sharing your progress with the world. Sure missed you Saturday. Hope to see you back on the 14th.
How awesome is this guy. Just look at the people's faces as he talks to them, that says it all.
The satisfaction I get seeing one of my dinky little RC planes fly after building it is always nice...I literally cannot imagine how good that first flight mustve felt in Scrappy. What an amazing project!
The aviation industry could not have a better person to promote the Business!!! You are the man, Mike👍🇺🇸
It's been a month since this video. Anyone else going through withdrawals?? I'm getting by ok by working on my own projects, but damn.. Mrs. Patey, enough is enough. Give us our Mike back LOL
Sir Mike Patey a very Special Thanks to bring me into your World. God Bless You,Wifely and Family. Can’t wait for more to Come. # 1 Mike and Best Tug. Greg of Ohio
Incredible. I can’t wipe the smile off my face!!! Such an amazing work of art and engineering. Mike you are truly a master of your craft!
It was so cool meeting you and seeing Scrappy in person. Congrats on getting the aircraft complete and on your new line with Best Tugs!!!!
Love how Mike took Scrappy for a walk at the end there.
Flew up to Oshkosh Saturday mostly to see scrappy. It was worth it. Well done!
I’m so happy Scrappy’s flying, and still amazed at how much plane was engineered, and built in such a short amount of time! It still would be extremely impressive if it was done with a large crew. 👍
It was such a pleasure to meet you and see the plane in person. I was very impressed with how generous you were with your time and how enthusiastic you remain on what must have been an exhausting show. I was also impressed with the clear attention to detail in the design and manufacturing of every small part. It is that much more impressive up close.
I'm so happy you achieved finishing Srappy to present her at Oskosh. Scrappy is a beast, powerful, plenty of inovative features, no one has ever seen before, this is the most sophisticated STOL ever built.
WOW great to finally se Scrappy in the air. It's gorgeous
I love this. Mike you have built/written the most beautiful love letter to aviation and flying. Scrappy is gorgeous, all those long days and nights seem to have finally paid off. Can't wait to see where you two go and the things you do!
Got to see it in person! Now just waiting for the spars for a little piece of history!
Update: Received them and they look great. Thank you Mike Patey
Mike you are an inspiration to the entire aviation community and will go down in history with your name right beside Wilbur and Orville, Howard, Gus, Neil, and Virgil. Thank you. Your words and dedication are fuel for the hearts and minds of many passionate people who's stations are markedly different but they use that fuel to drive forward in pursuit of their goals! Thanks also to Chandra for her words and support. You two are amazing!
Mike, Thank you for the opportunity to shake your hand and have my picture taken with you under the wing of Scrappy last Friday at Oshkosh. I'm a huge fan & it meant a lot to me. Your plane is an absolute jewel of engineering and craftsmanship! Are you going to get your wife's project flying next?
It was so awesome to see it, and you, at the show. Can’t wait to see more.
Mike congrats on getting scrappy flying for Oshkosh what an achievement! It was truly an honor to see it in person but even more so to meet you and Chandra. Keep up the great work and inspiring us all to get in to aviation. My 5 year old daughter came home from airventure and built her first plane out of cardboard. I asked her what she was going to do next and she said “Paint it like SCRAPPY!” Thank you again for taking the time to meet all of us fans at Oshkosh and keep up the great work!
That’s the best!! 🤠
I simply do not have words for this guy. You are for sure, one of a kind and I thank you, Mr. Patey.
The perfect example of "Build it and they will come" Congrats Mr. Patey, you build a superb leading edge plane, saw the project thru, and i am super happy for you. Seeing it fly is amazing. I remember at the very beginning, your idea of the wheel struts with a lifting effect. They seem to be massively overshadowed by your wing design.
His name will be still spoken by our grandchildren. I love the expression "Own the dash" and Mike Patey definitely does that. Inspirational in every way! No days off, back to work!
I have so much respect for you Mike, I wish I get to meet you one day. You are a living legend in the aviation industry. Everything you do in inspirational, from building aircraft to being a family man.
Hey Mike, You are not alone in the work at night department. I go to bed at 3:00 AM and get up at 8:00 AM...been doing it for years, I'm now 73. Thanks for this one, I've been following right along for several years now and I have to say that there is a feeling that I cannot shake. It is overwhelmingly clear to me that watching this Scrappy build has been a once in a lifetime experience. I've pulled of some stunts in my time, but that was just enough to make it clear what a monumental feat that you have accomplished with this build! FYI...My boss had a Beech Bonanza and I found a way to replace the 25 watt generator with a 45 watt alternator back around 1970. That lead to Omni, DME, solid state radios and strobe lights. I though that was a big deal until I watched you at work! Now go take care of the chick, she is a real gem!
Its as if the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works was asked to do a Fieseler Storch with Kelly Johnson dropping guidance notes from heaven tied to a brick.
But the truth is even more amazing.
If Kelly Johnson dropped a brick from heaven, it wouldn't fall. It would glide.
I am listening to a book about skunk works that is so cool to see a comment about it
Glide @ 3000 mph
@@bubbadudegaming Is it the one by Ben Rich? I read it a couple times. Very entertaining.
@@Cowracer67 yes it is
You need to get a FLIR Sensor ball (EO/IR) belly pod hooked up to that rear seat Garmin display for a “Rear Seat Sensor Operator” for search and rescue. Would make that a beast for an ISR Platform.
Congratulations Mike on the completion of the most wonderful project - “Scrappy”. After watching the whole build from the beginning I longed to see it take to the air and it was a beautiful sight to see. I am looking forward to seeing the incorporation of the future developments that you have in mind. In the meantime enjoy Scrappy to the fullest with your family and friends.
Amazing work Mike and Family! Congratulations. Thank you for sharing this experience with the world. You're an inspiration to all of us who love aviation!
I agree, but wondering if Mike has found a prop that is the right balance for Scrappy's unique characteristics?
I can’t wait to see this engineering marvel in person. Amazing work Mike
I too have a peculiar sleep condition but unlike you, where you only need 3 hours of sleep and can work for the remaining 21 hours in a day. I need a 21 hours of sleep to work in the remaining 3 hours in a day...
Same bruv
I think that means you're a cat...
Best Mike Paty comment ever!! 😂
So basically breakfast is your only meal.
@@dragonoffski4501 Definitely reeks of catnip...
So happy for Scrappy, all these months learning and sharing all the good things and incredible talent of Mike, just by your videos. It is a great machine, built by a great man. Congrats and thank you for spreading the love and knowledge of planes
Judging by the crowd around Scrappy, I would think this build was a huge success for both Mike and his friends and aviation fans all over. I know nothing about aeronautics but I really enjoy watching Mike’s videos. I lied a bit, I worked 4 1/2 years at Douglas Aircraft outside Toronto building DC 9 wings in the 60’s.😬👍👍
Everybody loves it, but it ain't a success till we see that sucker flopping down on the side of a mountain, workin that suspension, and taking off again ;)
While not necessary...some one needs to give Mike a PHD in aeronautical engineering ...he's a legend
Little late, but… he should teach courses. Always thinking outside the box!
I saw some other channels that showed you at Oshkosh! I am so stoked that I have watched this build from beginning :-) I am so excited and looking forward to more updates, now stop reading comments and get back to work!
When I came to EAA this year, top of mind was if Mike P and Scrappy would be there!?! Feel honored and blessed to even make it into the video!!!
So happy to see Scrappy in the air. Congratulations on a spectacular creation and thank you so much for bringing us along for the experience.
This was a bitter sweet video. Great to see Scrappy finished and congratulations Mike and team but to be honest, I'll really miss the build videos
Please make Scrappy available to fly in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020! I am beyond positive that all the systems could be mimicked in it. I know you are busy with the real ones but the new simulator is absolutely amazing. We need a Scrappy to fly! LoL
Hello Sr. I have around 15 years painting cars and making parts for automotive body. But your job its another thing💪💪. You Sr. Got my full respect. I love aviation, and every time i see your videos i just want to be there working with you guys. You guys do awesome job👍 Keep going and God Bless you and all your workers.🙏 Scrappy process make me look for another future in my own job...
I was there I asked the question about the wing reflex delta. It was really nice to chat with you
Would be great to see a video in-flight. Maybe even a vlog when flying Scrappy!
Finally, Finally! What kind of beast you built! Congratulations from Italy!
Hey Mike, I believe I am more and much happier to see your SCRAPPY project literally flying. Work done in detail with a lot of struggle and love for aviation. My smiling man congratulations. May God always enlighten You and your family. A big hug from your subscriber to the channel who has followed his big dream since the beginning.
Been watching and waiting since the beginning for this and I couldn't be more excited about how far scrappy has come. Amazing work Mike.
Thank you for thanking your spouse. That's the one person so many people forget to thank.
I'm an engineer and thoroughly enjoy the design
So glad to hear Scrappy flies great. I was afraid she would balloon on takeoff. Can't wait to see what she'll do with other prop options!
Mike, I was really happy to hear you give credit at the end to THE MOST important person in the scrappy build: your beautiful (and extremely patient) wife. You are a blessed man to have such a wonderful woman supporting you as she does. She’s the greatest resource you have. Just remember: “if momma ain’t happy, ain’t NOBODY happy!” And one last thing: for the love of all things holy, HIRE ME!!!!! I don’t care if I gotta sweep floors!
It is soooooo satisfying to see all this hard work come to an end and Scrappy up in the air. What an awesome journey! 😎👍
Fantastic achievement Mike for you and your family and all who was involved in the making of scrappy 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧
We are deeply grateful that you shared this build with us from conception to completion and on to Oshkosh celebration!! 🎉❤️👏🏼
I know that filming, editing, producing, commenting and everything that goes along with CZcams can be draining on time and efforts while sometimes you wonder if it’s even worth it. So thank you and Ron for giving of yourselves so freely so that we can follow along! It makes the mundane of corporate life bearable! I look forward to every and ANY video that you put out!
You are an inspiration for young and “old” alike. 😉 Many people say that you are “lucky” to have what you have but we, in the know, know that it’s not luck at all! Your hard work and dedication have blessed you with everything that you have worked so hard to build. You are truly one of the few heroes that I am proud to present as a role-model to our future generations. You are definitely the type of family man with the “Families can be together forever” ideals that I hope and pray I can be someday!
Congratulations on such a marvel of engineering and a model of what is possible!! Your videos keep us going! Keep up the great work Mike! Love you guys! ❤️👊🏼👍🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
WE LOVE YOU MIKE!!! You are a true HERO and inspiration to all who love aviation! Congrats on another AMAZING build! I can't wait to see it in person!!
I always wanted to see this build finished, but I never wanted it to end
Agreed. Scrappy is amazing. I doubt this will be the last insane project Mike takes on.
BTW. That’s the best profile picture and name I’ve seen in a while. 🤣👍
@@lamontcranston8181 thx man 👍
Gonna need some Scrappy footage in the intro now..
Mike, we are dying out here in CZcams land. We need a new installment of your project!
Don't ever tell the Patey brothers..."It can't be done!" They will do it and better than ever imagined. If I were younger I would get into flying. Every video that the Patey brother's do tells a story of the advancement of aviation!
It would be like telling Jimmy Doolittle, Bob Hoover or Chuck Yeager "It can't be done"
Got to meet you at Airventure and it was legit the only time I’ve ever been starstruck! You’re the man mike! Most inspirational and humble guy in avaiation without a doubt!
Mike! What an amazing accomplishment! Super fan of skrappy watched every step of the way. It’s finally done! I agree… I don’t know how you do it? The only word is amazing!✌️❤️🇺🇸
Mike puts excitement into GA period! Thank you for sharing your drive and passion with us! It's greatly appreciated!
I wish you and Scrappy one hundred more happy years together. My only thought on the 780 Lycoming was would the prop turn turn around the airplane, or would the airplane turn around the prop. Wonderful accomplishment. All the best.
For some reason it reminds me of a spirit of St.Louis on steroids great-looking airplane Mike
