The first thing that came to mind was how Efren showed up on the scene with a $10 (?) pool cue and showed everyone how it was done. On the other hand, maybe $10 in the Philippines back then would get you a very decent cue. Who knows? Nice video Karl!
Stephen Hendry won 7 world snooker titles with warped cheap cue. All other players sayed its rubbish.
Efren's skills was polished with his old, Adam Japan cue back then before coming to US. Unfortunately, it got broken so he didnt own a cue.
Pretty much the same as what Karl did here. A "taste" of a good cue does help.
Ken Doherty paid 2 pound for a cue he liked that was in his local snooker club. Went on to win the World Championship with it.

It's all about the player, in my opinion.
This proves you don't need an expense cue, just a straight one with a good tip. I swear I play just as bad with a good house cue as I do with my $2000 cue!
With house cue I play even better because I don`t try to do fancy shots and miss 🙂

Spending $2000 on a cue is insane, even if you're a billionaire. It's down to talent, you play the game and not your cue. As long as the cue is straight that's all that matters . Stephen Hendry won 7 snooker world titles with a cue costing less than $20 .

I'd suggest that any beginner should buy his her own cue if they are serious about playing the game, most cheap pool cues will be better than most you'll find in the rack at a pub or club. As a bonus it's your cue so you get used to the weight etc.
Get it re-tipped and you'll be good to go.

When I first started playing American Pool that was the first cue I used, The tip fell off when I first played with it and had to replace it with an elkmaster tip. 😂
In the end, I ended up replacing it with a Chinese 8 ball cue (Which was from woods cues) which is a snooker cue with a bigger size tip (12mm.)
Why you may ask? The reason was because I needed a cue that was 60 inches in length to compensate for my height (6ft 4) and my arm span is longer than my legs.
Unfortunately, I learnt real quick, not just an American pool but in snooker as well, cues that are longer than 58 inches are extremely hard to find and often very expensive, as a result they often get purchased up quickly online.
So I had to do some thinking outside the box and found out that if I couldn’t find an American Pool cue in my ideal length and weight I’ll just get a Chinese 8 cue instead as it’s designed for the same size balls.
Anyway, sorry about that rambling, looking forward to seeing more videos from you, Karl. 👍
Never a bad idea for a new player to buy a cheap cue to start with. They don't know what they are going to like feel wise until they've played a little bit. A cheap cue is good enough to learn some basics with and then you can try out some brand name cues once you have sense of what you are feeling when you strike the cue ball. Most new players don't have anything with which to compare to at first.

We have overrated the ''cue'' issue.... I am an amateur 3 cushion billiards player and i know for sure that the only things that you need is a cue that ''suits'' you (mostly a good shaft) with a good tip and a lot of good training...Greetings from Athens GR
Still, even at £25 you wouldn't expect BCE to be sending out bent cues from the factory.
Ya, you should never accept a bent cue.
A wee tip, if you get a dint/dent in the wood of a cue. Remove any varnish, and steam it using a kettle or better still the jet from a steam cleaner. This swells the wood fibre, which has been compressed, and when dry it should be normal again.
Cues can be straightened again by making a steaming box to fully contain the affected part of the cue. Then it requires clamping in a jig with protection to spread the load and stop the clamps damaging the cue.
I was an armourer in the forces and I used to take dents out of rifle butts and stocks, and I’ve been a keen amateur snooker player for about half a century. I don’t like varnish running on my bridge hand, so that’s the first to go on a new one. If dented, the lot goes and then, to protect the cue from damp/condensation, wipe the whole shaft with linseed oil on a soft cloth, letting the wood soak it up and dry before use.

You should do a video with a house cue(one-piece cue.) The one piece cues get a lot of hate.. but any decent one out performs a junk 2-piece imo.
Rhino Cues has a 1-piece CF cue, it would be interesting to see how it performed.

Brought my first English Pool cue from sport's direct oddly over 20yrs ago under their old name. That was only £10 back than 😂
That cue was unbranded BCE sticker patched cue which was so unstraight but i still have it and now using it as my break cue 😆

Not always about the cue. A lot to do with how the player addresses the table for each shot. It shows that practice and more practice is the key.

Karl, BCE Cues are made by Hanbat International in China and just branded for them :)
The design are all decals and paint over plain maple and the joint is plastic, but most players prefer the joint to be wood, phenolic resin, Elforyn, Ivorine or Juma.

Anytime pal, same company in China makes a lot of cues for many production brands and has done since they bought over Dufferin Cues in Canada about 20 years ago.
I had tried one of those cues years ago for a laugh and it was brutal, so I changed the tip and put an Elkmaster on it and gave it away to a young lad in a local club that was just starting out 😎👍

That bend is top secret for applying english. Just line up center cueball and rotate the cue for the desired english 😊
I know it sounds like an excuse to most, but if I feel an imperfection anywhere on my cue whilst down and stroking, its a HUGE distraction for me. That would be rough for me.

Great video as usual 😁 It shows that the equipment is overrated over the basics of stand, bridge, cueing and physics of billiard. The focus of most beginners is with the equipment, as if a 1000 Euro cue will immediately let you do deep screws without fail. Fell in the same trap and I'm still in it.....this video just discouraged me to change from my current Pechauer cue to Predator.

The better the cue the more confidence a player has,nothing worse than miscue on a deep screw then having to play the same shot shortly after,the confidence is lost on a broom handle.
I'd love to see you play him a match where you could only use a break cue to shoot with.

Someone left a 3/4 length cue (maybe closer to 1/2 length tbh) in a local pub, it had a decent tip and I loved it, everyone said I should stop using it, but I beat everyone with it (we all played for the team) and of course spent much time reminding them of the fact. The only drawback was no back swing, like none, but all shots were possible, deep screw was tricky but still possible, it went missing eventually, but I think they hid it just to stop me embarrassing them. In hindsight, I wish I used it during match games, now that would have given me great bragging rights lol
This video was marvelously entertaining. Suggestions for possible sequels: Play with an actual broomstick found in the garbage. Use a cue that is intentionally the wrong type of cue for the game, like an entry level snooker cue. There exist in-between cues that are halfway between snooker and pool: 11mm tip size, brass ferrule or plastic ferrule, maple or ash shaft, 1/2 joint, and conical taper. Those could be loads of fun.

More ideas: Try finding a PVC pipe / tube of reasonably similar dimensions as a pool cue from various industrial suppliers (maybe plumbers could help locate that). Just glue a leather tip to one end to mimic a pool cue. Although that might require some skill.

So please answer this question honestly: You just bought a very cheap cue that was actually bent (which should never be the case with a cue that is new) and you played fairly well. So what is your real opinion on the constant hype and promotion of these really expensive cues that are simply not needed by 99% of all players in the world? Do you feel the public is being misled about the importance of the really expensive cue?

His cue was nothing like this, I almost bought the same cue as Hendry back in the 80S but I could not afford the £100 needed,rex Williams cues were one of the best off the rack cues available at the time.

Karl mate i gotta tell ya but the 'average' pool player does not play with a carbon fibre cuetec cue. also on CF cues it just goes to show that you dont teally need one to pocket balls, just get a reasonably priced normal wood shaft cue, with a good tip as someone mentioned below. many 'average' players i know have cues that cost between £80-£130, however my cues on the other hand are not at that price range 😅
Here in the US they're pretty common for league players, doesn't even really matter if they're a great player or not.

Lot of comments about how you don't need an expensive cue to play well; well, there's some truth to that, but in the spirit of getting what you pay for, even if you don't necessarily play much better, you SHOULD play better and, more importantly, enjoy the game more...as demonstrated by Karl not taking certain shots because he wasn't confident enough in the cue..
It can also be simply a matter of taste and spending power...some people drive Rolls Royces and Ferraris.

I haven't bought a cue in years, but I remember back in the day the cues in the sports shops would be presented in a circular stand, so you could actually inspect them and handle them. I'd never buy a cue in packaging that you couldn't even get down on and see how it feels in the stance.

My first snooker cue was a 2 piece covered in horrible varnish and included a soft case for £14. Crazy light compared to most snooker cues but I made many century breaks with it. If it's straight and you put a decent tip on you can go a long way.

B.C.E used to be Bristol Coin Equipment, doubt that they made the cue. You need to try E.A. Clare in Liverpool, they make the Peradon & Fletcher range of cues.
They used to do a BCE Mark Selby range and ronnie range for the money decent hand spliced cues that’s for the beginner player

I picked a cue up for £20 on Amazon and it's doing great. Some of my mates on the pool team will use it as well. I'm definitely playing better with it than I did with the pub cue.

The cue stick is very poor. But you pay for what you get. The cue doesn't make the player. It's the work you put in it makes you better. I remember my first pool cue, and it had these screw in tips. I think I paid like 40 to 50 dollars for it. But the cue was very straight. Then I bought my next pool cue that was a McDermott model D9 with a nylon wrap, and I paid 150.00 dollars and included a pool case, chalk, and tip shaper, as well as stuff to keep well maintained. I still own it, and I even had an extra shaft made for from McDermott's. The wrap has been replaced with Irish linen to match the cue. I now have a total of 5 McDermott pool cues and one Star pool cue that's made by McDermott, and it looks like the old sneaky pete that I use as my breaking cue. But my game has been average, and that's because I don't play as much as I used to. As long as the pool cue is straight and the table rolls are in your favor, you'll be able to win 3 games. Now as to where I'd buy my pool cue, that's a different choice altogether. Not for a sporting goods store. I would buy it from a billard store, or I'd maybe use a friends cue or go try to find out about the cues that are on the market by reading about the brands' tutorials on the pool cues or even ask other player they're options about pool cues. That's how I came about buying a good cue stick.This was a good video.

Its me again , I told how I do a double break , and told you about flicking your wrist like a dart player . I'm sorry I forgot 1 important detail about flicking the wrist shot . When I do those tap shots with juice , I never hold the cue with a death grip , I just use 2 fingers . About buying cheap cues , I always look the farrow , if its too long leave it there , because its a 1 piece screw on tip with farrow , I always look for a brass or ivory farrow . Also I like just a bit smaller tip what you find on a 8 ball cue . With the smaller tip , the juice you get is unreal . After 45 years playing pool , it was time to stop , also I hurt my shoulder really bad .

Such a true saying, as long as the cue is straight thats all that matters,the player is playing the shots and not the cue. If you're a great player then you're a great player and it doesn't matter how expensive your cue is. If you're a bad player then you'll still be bad even if you're using a $1000 cue.

I've re-tipped several of these within hours of them being bought from Sports Direct because the tip fell off when people have brought them into the club. A few of their English cues as well. The English cues were even worse - the ferrule is often longer than the tenon on the shaft so there's no way of keeping it on. The best thing about them is that you can use the packaging as shit joint protectors.
It'll be 19 ounce-ish, 5/16x18 joint. I'm not convinced the tips on them aren't actually made of some sort of soft wood. The ferrules look like they're almost see through.
You'd be better off buying one of those ones from Sam Leisure with pictures of people shagging on them for £20. The ones they used to sell at Rileys.

I was actually really pissed off because we was gone for about 2mins and some fucker pinched it. I didn’t like going as much, after that. Oh well 😭

Paid a fiver for a cue in a place similar to sport direct in the 90s. Was an amazing cue, it even survived a fire in the snooker club.

Why would anyone other than someone piss-poor buy a very cheap cue?; I'm a underprivileged person yet even I wouldn't buy a new cue for under £30. I strongly recommend that if you are piss-poor buy yourself a club cue, they are one-piece but decent.
