- This is the first episode of my new series of videos about landscape photography on location in Iceland.
Each video in the series will cover one day at a time of our trip. During this first day, we drive around Iceland’s Golden Circle.
We start the day at Geysir, where Strokkur is mesmerizing to watch. We then head to out to explore Gullfoss, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, three unique and very different waterfalls.

Terrific!
Great stuff. Can't wait for day 2
Thank you Guillermo. Episode 2 is coming tonight. ;-)
Excellent images, enjoyed!
amazing christophe, thank you
Thank YOU for watching! ;-)
Fabulous !
Thank you!
Well done!
Thank you Christophe for the wonderful pictures, and the very interesting information on your techniques :) Very much appreciated!
Many thanks Pat. I am glad you liked it and got some good information from the video.
What an awesome video! The photos, video and drone footage are simply beautiful, with the music fitting perfectly. And, what a lovely country Iceland is! Thanks so much.
Thank you Chris. Glad you liked the video. It was fun making it. More episodes are coming soon. ;-)
Brilliant as usual Christophe.
Thank you Robert. Glad you like it.
Brilliant. I won't worry about my X-T2 in the usual UK autumn weather again.
Thanks. You really shouldn't. ;-)
Very smart presentation as well as stunning views. Congrats, bro!
Heel mooi.
Stunning video, brilliant commentary, awesome images, just subscribed to the channel.
Just discovered your videos and thoroughly enjoyed them. After watching this video, I just had to sit down and watch your other videos. Look forward to seeing your next video.
Thanks Nina. Glad you enjoyed the videos. The next episode is coming tonight. ;-)
VERY WELL DONE VIDEOS. I specially liked the edits and how you moved from diffrent kinds of camers.
Very nice 👍👍
Great video. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks for watching.
Superb video ! Bravo Christophe. I thank you for the "red poncho tip", very cool trick to add to a landscape photo ;) Love your content.
Many thanks Julien. The red poncho a nice little (and light) add-on when you want to include a person in your landscapes. I used it quite a few times in Iceland as you've probably seen in the different videos. Glad you found my channel. Cheers.
Good job. Love the images.
Many thanks.
Stunning Christophe, we're visiting in about 4 weeks, great video thank you!
Enjoy Iceland.
super nice and fantastic - video and stills - awesome - really enjoyed video
Thanks. Glad you liked it. More episodes are coming soon. ;-)
Great shots
Thank you Martin. Which one is your favourite?
Outstanding and phenomenal! I have just returned from the Golden Circle and really do appreciate the images you have captured and your narrative. Thanks for sharing, and I am pleased to be a subscriber now.
Thanks and welcome to the channel.
Really a very enjoyable video. I look forward to watching more! As mentioned below, the drone footage is not too much, but really adds to the content. We have all seen these kinds of pictures of Iceland, but yours are excellent and beautiful, too. Your positive and intelligent personality also comes through in a very good way. So congratulations, and do more.
Thank you for the kind words.
I think drone footage works best when it is used sparsely in order to complement the rest of the video. It's interesting to show a different point of view from the air though.
Cool! Imma fan now. Christophe, can you please make a tutorial video on how to use the filters + settings that you have used? It would be awesome. Xt20 user here cheers!
What a wonderful video! I really enjoyed the way you narrated your footage. I do not think that National Geographic could have done any better. Now I want to go and visit Iceland :)
What a terrific comment. Not sure I can compete with anybody at National Geographic, but I am glad you like the video that much.
By the way, Iceland is definitely worth visiting!
very nice video, however I'm not a fan of long exposure pictures of moving water. But the red poncho picture was a lovely one
Hey Christophe, very very nice video! Awesome surprise at the end :) The drone footage was cool as well, especially the geysir from above and going over the waterfall. And the photos looked amazing. Really well rounded video, nicely done!
One question: Are you happy with the NiSi filter system? Did you experience any problems at 10mm on the 10-24?
Hey Volker. Thanks. I am glad you enjoyed the video. It was a lot of work! But I had a lot of fun filming and editing. :-)
Concerning the NiSi filters: I love them, although they have some little quirks. The glass is amazing, but I sometimes struggle with the small metal rings (especially in the cold). But, thanks to the intelligent design of the filter holder, there is no vignetting on the 10-24 at 10mm. The 1st picture of Seljalandsfoss (at the end of the video) was taken at 10mm with the polariser and the 6-stop ND.
Merci pour ces belles images ! A quand le 2ème épisode ?
Merci Christine. J'ai commencé le montage du 2e épisode. J'espère le publier la semaine prochaine.
Lovely work there Christophe. I'm seriously considering this camera as the next for me. Can i ask what was the filters and holder you used with the XT-2 cheers
Thanks Michael. I'm using Nisi filters.
Great photos! Well done!
Thanks Alex. Which one is your favourite? :-)
The classic shot of Seljalandsfoss! Even thought it's a photo you see from many photographers, I't is still very striking. I hink this is also the location where you had the best light to work with which really paid off. Well captured!
Yeah I love to capture those classic views for myself. There will be lots of those in this video series. :-)
And yes, the light was great. Golden hour is always a good time and we were lucky there, the sun was out. In the morning it was still quite grey and cloudy, and during the day, I tried to avoid shooting the sky, as you can see from the pictures at Skogafoss. That first day was really sunny. Day 2 is a whole other story. :-D
I agree, there is normally a very good reason why these locations are so popular! :-) Unfortunately it's always up to the weather in these locations. I spent one week in Lofoten this May, and had only one day with good weather/light to catch the classic shots. Have a look if you want: 500px.com/kungkokos. Had Iceland scheduled for next year but changed location to the Dolomites (next Sept.) since I'm only able to travel "off season". Hoping for better condiitons there :-)
Looking forward to your next video!
Amazing video indeed. May I know which wide angle lens you recommend for such shoots.
Thank you. Glad you like the video. For the wide angle lens, I am using the Fuji 10-24mm (there is a link in the description of the video). But depending on your camera, any wide angle lens will do the job, as long as it is wide enough. On Canon, I am using the 17-40mm a lot.
Love this ! Amazing place ! I wanna buy an xe3 but it’s not weather sealed, do you think that it’s crucial to purchase a weather resistant camera for these kind of trips ? I wanna use it for general shooting but also for traveling.
Hi Allison, It really depends what you intend to do with your camera. I think a camera like the xe3 or xt20 will resist fine in most cases. I would protect them more with a rain cover in wet or sandy environments. Also don't forget that not all Fuji lenses are weather sealed. The 10-24 that I used behind the waterfall in this video is not weather sealed, so I did my best to protect it from the water.
Christophe, great video. I look forward to viewing the rest since I am planning a trip to Iceland in late September and also am considering dumping my Canon gear and just going with the X-T2. Your weather looked good in this video. What month were you there? Thanks.
Hi Dave. Thank you. I was in Iceland last September.
Which lense did you use the most? Which one to take with me as my only one lense solution for my xt2?
I've been watching all of your stuff now and normally i don't watch youtube at all... but, you made things very clear for me. I want to change my 5d mark 3 for the fuji xt-2 but im just a bit scared. Can i ask what tripod you use and how you end up with no raindrops at all on your photo at the waterfall? Thank you very much!
Well thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed the videos.
Changing camera really depends on your needs. The 5D Mark III is a great camera, so is the Fuji X-T2.
I am using a Sirui tripod (there is a link in the description of the video).
As for the water drops, it's no secret: constant wiping of the lens and filters. ;-)
Wonderful video, thank you for sharing Christophe.
When you were talking to camera what was your setup? It looked great and was very stable, so well done!
Hi Hubert. I used the Canon G7X MkII on a Gorillapod.
@@ChristopheVanBiesen Oh awesome. Thank you for the response Christophe!
Which lens did you use for the waterfall pics with the rainbow? Gorgeous images!
Hello Thomas. I used the 55-200mm on the Fuji X-T2.
Which tripod are you using and ND filters
Yeah that waterfall is pretty wet from behind. I took a shot with A6000 and Samyang 12mm from there and camera still worked after xD
This is a stunning video! What system were you using to film yourself? The microphone was extensively clear...which mic? Great job.
Thanks Toni. I am using an external recorder. Check the description for some links.
Hi, this is the first time I have seen one of your videos. Well done! Great drone footage and photos were awesome! I'm a big fan of my X-T2. Just one question. Have you noticed a difference in the quality of shots moving away from your 5Dmk3?
Hi there. Thanks! Glad you found my channel then. ;-)
Picture quality on the X-T2 is very comparable to the 5D Mark III and I could not find any major differences. Noise performance is even better on the X-T2 and shadows can be pushed more without introducing too much noise. I only noticed that highlights are less recoverable than with the 5D3, so I tend to shoot slightly underexposed with the XT2.
I made another video where I discuss switching systems in case you want to hear more about it: czcams.com/video/wHlCHNFp2fo/video.html
Christophe Van Biesen thanks for the speedy reply. I'll check out your other videos. Keep up the awesome content.
Hello Christopher,
Nice montage and the quality of it is amazing.
I have a XT2 but I am still debating on the post process software -:[ not happy with LR and the RAF file.
Are you using a software for your raw pictures or are they straight out jpeg ?
Thanks
Stef
Hi Stephane. Thanks, glad you like the video.
I work directly in LR with the RAF files, but I do not do any heavy editing, mostly shadows, highlights, WB. I switch to PS when I have to do more extensive editing.
Happy holidays
7:54 subscribed! Killer shot. Not many shots like that include the rainbow!! Lightroom or Capture One?
Thank you Jake. I was quite happy to capture that rainbow. It wasn't there for long, since the sun was coming and going.
I use Lightroom for most of my editing and Photoshop for fine tuning.
Stunning shots. Clean and wonderful presentation. Looking forward to more videos from you.
Can you please share the music name at 10:00? Thanks, in advance.
Hi there. Thank you very much. I'm working on several new videos, some about Iceland, some about gear, some completely different. Stay tuned. ;-)
The song is called 'The Sky Changes' by Gunnar Johnsén.
Thanks a heap!
So how did xt-2 stranded by Icelandic arctic weather? its best place to test weather sealing :) After being in freezing wind, rain, sand dust... ? Cuz it has weather sealing up to -10. I wonder if it keeps up same as dslr which made for mass production and extreme weather ( i own d7000 with weather sealed lenses and thinking about xt-2). Thx in advance :)
Well, I did not get any temperatures below 0°C in Iceland, but I recently tested it here at home visiting a castle in Luxembourg on a very snowy day, and it performed just fine.
I did not have any problems with it in Iceland while going behind some of the waterfalls and getting everything wet. The 10-24 I am using is not weather resistant, so I try to protect it as much as I can (as you've probably seen in the video).
All in all, I feel it performs just as well as any Canon I owned previously. (Although I still have to test it in extreme cold or heat)
nice video! what filter system are you using for the XT2?
Thanks. I use a Nisi holder. Check the video description for links.
Christophe, what lens was you most used lens on the Iceland trip. IS this more of a super wide angle towards 10mm or is more of 23mm thing ?
Hi Marko. I probably had the 10-24 most time on the camera. Although I made my favourite pictures with the 55-200. Have a look at the what's in my bag video from Iceland on my channel to get more information on my kit. Cheers
is it expensive to get around Iceland, its one of my favorate place to visit, after i visit China and Japan...
Hi Juan. Iceland is definitely one of the most expensive places I have been to. I haven't been to China or Japan yet, so I can't compare with those countries.
Is there links to your tripod and filters so I can buy them ,the same ones I meant
Hello Leigh, check the description of the video for links. ;-)
1: did you edit The Pictures/ Shooting them in raw?
2: what Lens did you use?
Yes, all pictures are edited in Lightroom. I always shoot raw. For the lenses, you should have a look at this video: czcams.com/video/RCzW4Bz0z1k/video.html
Nice shots, but you should respect the "No Drone Zone" in places like Geysir.
