Complaining about F Stoppers articles 😂😂 every time they feature one of my videos I go and look at the comments. The amount of master photographers talking about how much better they are than everyone is absolutely fascinating 😂😂 great video Mads! I just got back from Iceland where I spent most of the time on the Southeast coast. Lots of places to explore and find original photos.

First of all, I like your “abstract” sea composition the best of all the pictures in this video. It is serene and contemplative, and also speaks of the North to me. I would hang that one on my wall: it is original and truly beautiful.
I personally am weary of “trophy shots,” not only in Iceland, but elsewhere. I would not hang prints of any trophy shot on my walls, because the repetitiveness has reduced them to crass commercialism, however beautiful they may be. I am confident that there are plenty of “award-winning” shots left in Iceland, you just need to work to find them and shoot them under the best conditions, ... as this video points out. So, thank you for getting off the beaten track.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  Před 5 lety +4

They are what you make them. Even though it's a "trophy" shot, it might mean a lot to the one photographing it. First time in Iceland, find memories, a step up a ladder feeling like a better photographer etc. :)

This is one of your most suggestive videos for me. It shows the real original: your personal approach to the things, you want to reveal. The best original is: you, Mads. You have a perfect knowledge of your equipment. What you feel, you can express in your photos. I know Iceland very well after 16 tours (1985 - 2018) in my own 4x4 car. I love the harshness, the vanity, the pure nature. Photos are for me the nails to fix personal memorys. You tell me your kind to see this land. There are many other things to experience: snow, wind, sand. Mankind as a very little part of nature. Thank you for your provocations. I like to follow your pictures and I love my memories. It is an exchange of personal views. Let´s go one. Thank you.

Dude I personally LOVED the Gudni inspired photo. For me, it instills a sense of danger and fear, yet a strange calm and perhaps a surreal sort of channeled excitement because the closed perspective makes it seem like I’m in a boat venturing further out in a stormy sea.

The last photo looking out to sea from Vik: sheer simple sublime beauty, Mads. Wonderful! It gives me that very special involuntary intake of breath that comes before a quiet, almost whispered, "wow!" These are the kinds of shots that leave me wanting to just sit and look and fall into the image, dwelling in the waves and the air. It's why I am a landscape photographer, and every so often, the magic works. I find your work genuinely inspirational.
I've only been to Iceland once (this summer, in fact), and of course, being my first time, I went mostly for the iconic shots. I can't wait to go back and explore some more.

During my first trip to Iceland last October, we drove the entire Ring Road in seven days taking photos at all the iconic locations. I like it!!!! Simplicity is over looked in landscape photography. We are on the hunt for the picture that has every aspect in it, covers all the bases, we get more and more complex with our pictures. There was a day when thirds, leading line, light, and foregrounds weren't the norm. Simplicity can be an amazing thing. It is truly an art form when you can convey a feeling, or a mood with simplicity! Well done!

  • @LynneLuxonJonesphotography

I agree whole heartedly Mads. I feel the problem lies more with folk wanting the Classic images & letting that over shadow every other possibility.
I've visited Iceland 3 times & did a lot of the Classic locations simply to scratch an itch . I'd dearly love to go back for a few more of the Classic locations but also to explore in the same way you have done in this video. The only issues I have with another visit are the costs , the sheer number of visitors & of course ,the weather. To travel there at not inconsiderable cost as a single traveller & get less than my ideal conditions would make me rather unhappy 🙄

Thank you for another great video. Your videos are inspirational. Are some of the locations popular? Yes, however, that doesn’t mean we can’t visit and record our own take. That is what is so fabulous about photography, conditions will rarely ever be replicated, so in theory anyone can visit a location hundreds of times and come away with a hundred different shots. Are we looking for originality in the location or originality in conditions, composition and presentation. Your work inspires photographers like myself (weekend/holiday warriors), don’t stop. ❤️

I would imagine staring at that the wave image from Vik in large print would instill a feeling of inner calm. In addition to your comments Mads about originality, a country the size of Iceland and it's diversity of landscape will ensure originality can still be achieved. Also your own composition and final edits combined with the unique conditions in my opinion will make any picture original as it is your interpretation of what you see. A great episode 👍

Great video Mads. I travel around Australia on a permanent basis and so don't get to get to know a place intimately like many photographers , and so, the idea of finding compositions on the fly is something I do most days, and it is a challenge, but gives me more than “the usual” shots most people get. Not only does it give me different shots, but it hones my compositional skills.
Loved your waves photo by the way. It's definitely one of those thought provoking shots that can be looked at for long periods of time, and one which would help decision making a pleasant experience.

I could not imagine how some one could say all the photos have been made that cable made. A photo is a personal thing from someone own mind and heart. The seascape shot made me think that a seagull or albatross needs to be there. Thanks

As a relative newcomer to landscape photography, I have never had the good fortune of travelling to Iceland. I would like to see the sights, but I am also cogniscent of finding compositions personal to me and what my eye likes vs. what sells or is popular. We can still create the popular from wandering the countryside and originality, and that's what I like best vs. wandering from point to point in a book and frankly being squeezed by time and trying to see everything in one visit. Guides are useful to orient our thoughts, but exploring is where the creative fun is to be had :) Great video, Mads. I really enjoyed it :)

Re: The wave photo from Vik. I've gone back and forth several times already. Sometimes I love it and other times it's Meh. The best thing about it is that it draws me back. I will ignore it for awhile and view it again with fresh eyes this afternoon and tomorrow. This is a good thing I believe. My wife and I are headed to Iceland this Friday in no small part due to the inspiration from your videos. Thank You. Phil

You just proved the critics wrong about originality in ICELAND. I love your positive attitude toward your photography. You look like you enjoy yourself is doing what you do. The last image you showed was very minimalist, I loved the simplicity and mood of isolation. PS: I have your map and hope to be able to use it in the not so distant future.

  • @StevenMusgrovePhotography

Great video as always Mads. I dropped my Kase 10 stop not long after getting it on to a pebble beach. Couldnt believe it but it was fine. Love the minimalist shot.

I'm looking out over Skaftafell at this moment after a day packed with incredible light and scenery. And thanks to your guidance I managed to achieve some shots using a slow shutter speed to get "fuzzy" water. And I didn't use a tripod but I will next time.

I think it’s a good idea to have a plan for your photo trip, however sometimes I think it’s fun to just venture out on your own and see what you find. I think it trains your eye to focus in on your shots and with it comes the unexpected. I too like the wave photograph, it evokes a sense of calmness for me. Nice

Hey Mads, this is a fantastic picture, not a bullshit. It is not necessary at all, although technically feasible, to show everything in the farthest corner. This type of photography gives the viewer the opportunity to interpret and contribute to something. To let one's thoughts roam. Nothing against the "sharp nature photography". This one is great, too. But I really want to see more of these pictures from you.

Great video. The Vik beach shot is beautiful and the first thing that comes to mind for me is "vast emptiness". As I looked at some of the other shots I found myself thinking they would be fantastic in B&W as well.

Hi Mads, Another enjoyable video, I have bee to Iceland myself earlier this year and I can,t understand anyone who says it,s not worth photographing as there is nothing original to shoot. I don,t know whether that is true but I certainly doubt it , having said that there is certainly plenty of places to photograph as I,m sure you know, and does it really matter if it is original or not if you come away with some great images that I liked, as I did. I really liked the seascape picture I agree it makes you think what mystery may be out there, but also to me gave me a felling of calmness, great picture, regards Ian

Thanks for another inspiring video Mads. I thought the 4 photos you took were very nice, and I would also have been proud to take them. I keep thinking people that make claims like "there is no new compositions in Iceland" are people who shoot with the "blinders on". They cannot think outside the box. I love the abstract photo at the end as well, and have done similar shots when travelling on the west coast in the USA near Oregon and Washington State. Take care.

I will soon have 17 days in Iceland in March. As an amateur photographer I hope to get some good shots. Your videos are helping me on the technical side of what and how I shoot. I have mobility restrictions and so I won't be able to hike and climb like a goat but I hope I'll get some memorable images of my ring road adventure.
