- Billy the Kid was one of the more infamous outlaws in the American wild west. He was known as a teenage gunslinger that few would dare cross. Don Sweet owns the museum dedicated to his legend in the town where he too was shot in an ambush, then remains buried to this day in the Pecos River Valley south of Fort. Sumner, New Mexico. #MuseumTour #WildWest #FortSumnerNewMexico #TravelNewMexico #AmericanHeartlands

I was thrilled when Don Sweet agreed to give us a guided tour of the museum portion dedicated to Billy the Kid. In the next segment, I will take us through the rest of this very large museum complex.
So he is saying all the photo are real? I know they are not authenticated but I think it would be awesome if the croquet picture is actually Billy and friends
@@Magoo.Rivero I believed he did mention that some of the items such as the photos are reproductions of the artifact items. The enlarged photos definitely are reprduced enlargements.
@@DustyReinsStories right, they are reproductions but Historians have only validated one picture of Billy the kid and that was the tintype with the rifle none of the other photos have proven to be Billy
@@Magoo.Rivero Well I certainly don't know enough to add to a debate on the topic so I will leave it to the rest of you to sort it all out with referances to authoratative sources available online for anyone who wishes to explore all information available. Don would be a good source to query if you want to consult with him but I think everyone should contat him soon before we lose him forever.
@@DustyReinsStories I agree!
Love it sending love from Melbourne Australia
This is nothing short of amazing. Such stunning pieces of history. I'd love to visit and see it all....if only.
This is so good. My granddad Benjamin Franklin Wood was also born in 1859 and was friends with Billy in Ft Sumter. Granddad ran a barber shop there but also in his small business you could get a tooth pulled and or a bowl of soup. We heard many a story of the short man Billy.
Wow! Did your grandfather tell you many stories about that time? Do you still live in the area?
@@DustyReinsStories No I live in TN. Our situation is a wild one. Granddad out lived two wives & at 68 married an 18 year old & had four kids, one my dad. I'm only 71 & granddad would be 164 years old today, Our stories at least for us grands came from grandmother. I do want to go back to Ft Sumter though & check some more.
You are lucky to have these stories. I love the story about Billy and he’s friends. Big fan. I would love to visit the place where they once were but a long trip from Denmark
My Dad's Uncle, Juan Widner, married Petra Coleman in the 30's maybe? Well.... Petra's Dad and Grandfather owned a ranch in Rodey, N.M.
Patricio Coleman Sr. bought the land and started the ranch in the mid-1800's and we're told that Billy was a ranch hand for a time. I need to find out if there's any pictures from that time that may have Billy in them. This seems to be common knowledge among the family and Billy made a living working as an itinerant ranch hand before getting into trouble.
This was sweet! I hope he is teaching or writing down all that knowledge so we don’t lose it.
Thanks for sharing! I came to this museum in 2013 with my dad and it was fantastic! I went back in 2017/2018 and it was closed. So I’m glad to see it’s back up and running. This place is a treasure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a thrill, a true treat to see all this fantastic history. The caretaker is a true gem! God bless you all. I pray you have some youngsters wanted to learn all your knowledge an feel "Try" your shoes!
wow this guy is amazing he knows everything and also loves talking about it.

My pleasure! This museum has been a to-do on my bucket list since I was 10 years old.
How awesome is that! A personal tour! Great information
Thank you sir it's very fascinating, and what a older gentleman, this and he is just great !🙂 from Tulsa Oklahoma with love ❤.
I loved seeing this...so much history. ❤️
Oh my...from UK ..I loved the old West Cowboys, I was looking into Billy the Kid, this came up, looked in to the man claiming to be Billy the Kid, in the moment this wonderful old chap said, he turned out to be 20 years younger...I believe this old Gent, he knows!! great,
Amazing! 🇺🇸 Did not know this Museum existed! What a treasure of History. This Old Guy is a National Treasure. Thank God this Video was done. So much Historical information flowing from this Man. Hope I can Visit this some Day🇺🇸
I first learned about Billy The Kid and the museum when I was in elementary school in Roswell, NM. I finally found a way to check it off on my bucket list of places to go some 60 years later. Documenting a #WRCA rodeo in Fort Sumner helped to make it possible for me to visit the museum for the first time.
his father built amazing piece of history and now passed on to his son just to even see things on video is really cool I thank them both
That is really cool.Thank you for sharing
Very cool video of our past history from the old west and Billy the Kid and others which is way better than anything on tv. for sure !!! Thanks sir !!!
This is simply amazing. Thank you
Who could give this a thumbs down?!! Smh

Very informative history on Billy the Kid.
That was such a great video actually getting to talk to Don Sweet! Thanks for a great video
Thanks for sharing this .A lot of history and pictures of William Bonnie that I've never seen . 🤠
I believe it
Love seeing all the Maxwell memorabilia!! They’re ancestors of mine.
Ooh! The mention of John Wayne was cool, he was my grandma Betty Johnson Maxwell’s cousin though a Parson ancestor. My daughter is also related to the Gallegos family! It’s strange how all the family always ties back to the Billy The Kid connection!
Stopped on my way back from Las Vegas. In April of 2022 . Spent about 2-3 hours there. Very nice people didn’t rush you out. So much history there and the grave yard just down the way. Good time. Great little town of history
I agree and hope to return to explore more history stories in the area.
Visited there in 2016 ,Steve and Rhonda Redcliffe, Australia.
Interesting!! I was there when I was kid in 1973 an then in 2013. It took at least two hours to look through it...
I just walked out of there and got a really cool postcard and so many pictureS
loved it 10/10 recommended
@@monkefan7507 I agree even though most of the floorplan has nothing to do with Billy or his time period. Nonetheless, there are many artifacts there you just don't find anywhere else.

Have you been to Lincoln NM at the county courthouse where Billy made his final escape it is now a sort of museum to walk through such a cool place and piece of history still standing i love NM so much historic towns and buildings to visit great video i love this type of content!!!👍
I was only seven when I went there with my family and did not fully grasp the significance of the place other than it was an old army fort. I need to do a return visit. Thanks for the reminder!
@@DustyReinsStories that's how my experience was when I went to the museum your at in the video I was about 8 and didn't fully understand or appreciate history the way I do now I just turned 30 and am a huge history buff!!🤠

Very wise fella! I'd love to go here. I'd love to purchase the Wanted Poster!
Great video!
Very interesting im a big fan of the old West, I'm in the UK and would love to tour the USA if I had the money, but anyway thanks for posting this video.
I didn't think I would ever get to visit the UK but some 20 years ago, I was fortunate enough to work in Hursley, Hampshire, England for six months! Don't give up!
I remember seeing this museum on the highway on the way over to the grave site that has another museum next to it and historic Fort Sumter nearby. I went on a slow day, there was no other tourist around. The museum at the site has the tin photo of Billy the Kid.
That's not his grave site
@@thejamesbondshow9754 And Santa Clause is real. It's fun to just say things with no evidence.
A private collector bought the original tin pic for $2.3 million in 2011. It was never in a museum.
Wow I was there today!! Spoke to this sweet old man, said he's been married 69 years now!!!😜😱 Dear Lord I told my husband hope I don't live that long lol
Id love to visit the billy the kid museum im a big fan
why...would they not take a picture of the kid's death...they took a picture of EVERY OTHER outlaw there was.. the officers that killed them was PROUD to say they did it. so they always took a picture... but pat didnt have billys body pictured?? it wasn't billy....
❗
It was Billy. There are plenty others. Fort Sumner was so remote by the way.
@@ronniehenwood8580 it was not Billy, even the two co law men with Pat saud it was not Billy.
Go to Brett Hall's channel and learn the truth about Brushy Bill Roberts, the real Billy The Kid.
@@thejamesbondshow9754 I have studied the Kid since junior high. I'm now forty six. John Poe and Tip McKinney did admit to saying that, because at the time Billy resembled a Mexican and was staying with Mexican friends. Neither one of them had a clue what he looked like. They both recanted and explained in later years. I have discussed with Brett, he is a Brushy advocate, which in my opinion is close to knowing the real Billy, as doing college yourself instead of going to a university. Brushy, Ollie, don't listen to only brushy lies, learn to seek the truth!
@@thejamesbondshow9754he isn’t Henry McCarty. Stop.
Billy's hair would be handy to DNA match with Brushy Bill Roberts DNA!!
I could be wrong, but I believe DNA can only be extracted from the hair follicles which would be had to find in a barbershop unless the barber is using a bad comb that pulls some hair out. What do you think?
Would that DNA be valid due to age?
Don't they have to have the roots of the hair?
Amazing I love history all the stuff those pictures and guns and the door with the bullet holes the clothing so cool Billy the kid is my favorite outlaw
Lol, he reminds me of my great grandpa you have to speak a little louder for him to hear you. My great grandpa was kinda hard hearing n if you didn't speak louder enough his mind would hear something completely different than what you asked. Hes got some cool stuff
I been to his cabin in New Mexico
He says “turns out Brushy was 20 years too young”.
That’s a misconception created in 1988, that mistook Him for Ollie P Robert’s, a cousin to the man he claimed to be, William H Roberts.
He went by an Alias Ollie L Roberts, and that’s where the confusion came from.
Whether he was Billy, who knows but he had 18 different people sight affidavits to knowing brushy in the 18880s and 90s as an adult, working jobs at a time when Ollie P was a child. It’s been completely disproven
Find William Tunstills 4-Hour interview with Ola Eberhard!! She was related and around Jesse and Billy. Brushy was Billy.
i believe every thing you said i would love to get some of your info from the part 2
Obviously most of these items do not have proper provenance or else they'd be worth a ton. Can you imagine how much the gun Billy used to escape the Lincoln County courthouse would be worth? I consider most of these items replicas, but this place is very cool nonetheless. I can't wait to visit.
They're not replicas.
@@johnsweeney5946 haha...ok. If that gun were the real deal it would be one of the most in demand Old West items of all time. There would be a major bidding war for it. I'm sorry you think it's the actual gun.
It's worth just shy on a million bucks. Sold for 980000 back in August
@@luckydogts It sold for almost 1 million and it's behind a glass case...haha

Too bad we didnt get to see the kid's hair. I was waiting for that
Me too!
@@DustyReinsStories Why didn't you stop him and ask to see Billy's hair before leaving the museum?
@@1998gst4611 I was hoping we would get to that hair sample but his wife called him away for some help. We finished up in the main part of the exhibits but I had to cover the rest of the museum on my own in the Part 2 video. Once done, I couldn't locate him for a follow-up before having to go set up to document the rodeo which took me to Ft. Sumner to begin with.
Major-General Edwin Vose Sumner did NOT die of wounds at Antietam. "Bull" Sumner died of fever at his daughter's home in Syracuse, New York on March 21, 1863. He's buried in Syracuse's Oakwood Cemetery.
great story on the Irish outlaw Henry MC carthy Similar to the Ozzie outlaw Ned Kelly
24:26 That comic book is Belgian.
The characters "billy the kid" and "the daltons" appear frequently in the Lucky Luke comic book series
I believe we'll find some facts there, but I still don't believe that Pat Garrett killed Billy
Really? Plz explain
@@charliechurch5004 because pat and Billy where good friends I believe he let em go and live his life maybe brushy bill was the real deal
Neither do I
@@JuanRodriguez-wg4vhbill was not Henry McCarty. Not even close
He most certainly killed billy the kid
Everybody really needs to hear the story of brushy bill roberts.......you will change your mind.
This museum potentially has the DNA of Billy the Kid.
Hair? Can they get DNA from hair that old?
Not likely. You would need relatively fresh hair follicles and there would be very few of those in cut hair.
The 1881 gold 20 dollar piece fŕom 2450 to 2850 depending on grade.

I went to a gun show in Florida and three guys had all the rifles and handguns,Shotguns as far as in that case goes.. Winchester's, Henry Rifles, Colts, Spencer rifles,I'm like all the rifles and handguns look like they were from the 1800s he said they are..I asked him how much they wanted for the Spencer rifle he said $20,000 dollars every rifle and handgun they had were very high priced..As much as I wanted to buy some of the weapons they were just out of my league as far as prices go..Was great to hold them in my arm's and hands..Great part of History I was holding but they were not tied to any important people's names as far as any Outlaws, Sheriff's, Military people from the 1800s..Plus I really didn't know my history as far as what all the weapons went for at the time..Great Museum a lot of history in that room..👉🏻🤠🇺🇸
@@melbourne-heat.69-71 damn my sister has a Henry repeater from 1889 and she is selling it for a thousand.
Pop's be cool AF and I be sayin he a good brotha
Been to ft Sumner, some cool items, but the fact of the matter is that outside, there is a grave stone with 3 names on it. But there is no graves under it. This area has flooded at least two times and anything buried there is long gone. As far as Billy the kid, he lived to be 90 years old and had one hell of a life. He was buried in Hamilton, TX under the name William Roberts, ak Brushy Bill Roberts. This has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. As far as Pat Garrett, he shot a pal of Billy's that went over to Maxwell's to get a piece of meat. When Garrett seen that he shot the wrong man, he passed the man off as Billy. He was buried quickly. As Garrett realized he would be charged with murder. SHAME ON NEW MEXICO FOR NOT CORRECTING HISTORY TOURIST DOLLARS.
Does the museum sell the life size picture of Billy that is there? I'd love to buy one!!
In the Part 2 video, I go through the gift store portion of the museum. I do not recall if there were large poster prints in there or not.
Eonderful seeing all those 300 hr ikd artifacts(or replicas..because i doubt those cowhide chaps wouldve stood the test of time without modern refrigeration! Lol) all those LONG ARMS my goodness! Regardless of any authenticity to Billy the kid theyre all still quite fascinating to see & VERY valuable(im a bit of an arms buff & have a few pieces of antique weaponry..which I paid a aubstantial amount to own. All of whuch are rifles & shot guns)
The old barbers chair!(who the heck would put velet or velour on a barbers chair! How the heck would u get all the hair off the dang thing? Especially without a modern vacuum..which would still be difficult at best! Lol)
A lot of money sitting there & even more HISTORY!
No matter whom it allegedly belinged to or the place in history..enjoy the fact that u were witness to some of history's most interesting, intriguing times that was spiraling our ancestors into the industrial revelution to het us into a pount in time & technology that we dont have to leave the comfort of our homes to be witness to such fascinating sites!
The first bullet didn't kill Billy
Where is this museum I heard him say something about Mesquite is that mesquite Texas?
The museum is located in Ft. Sumner, NM as indicated in the description below the video. The mesquite he mentions is a thorny tree which is found predominately in the southwestern states of the United States.
Don’t ask any questions he is on a roll lol
Definitely more fun to think Billy wasn’t killed given the events surrounding his death and the reason he was began fighting. I’m not saying he was perfect, though I’m sure the opposing side tried to smear his name with more than he ever did-I just think he was fighting the good fight against the Sante Fe ring. He lost his life because of it, however, I think we are fighting or should be anyway, a much larger and more corrupt ring…
Billy did not lose his life. Brushy Bill Roberts was 100% William H Bonney, aka Billy The Kid.
Go to Brett Hall's channel and listen to all the evidence.
Read Brett's book The Real Billy The Kid AKA Brushy Bill Roberts.
History needs to be told truthfully
Billy's real guns,a Colt Thunderer and shotgun are in the Lincoln County museum.
interesting how many stories i heard about dead billy the kid but i think only true was that he survived or pat garret let him go. dont know what to belive anymore but i think dnk from his grave and his mothers grave would clear some things up
Is there any pictures of the Mcsween house before the fire?
You might call the museum and ask!
No photos of the house before or after. There is one photo of ruins that is sometimes identified as the "McSween home," but that is actually a photo of the ruins of the second home Susan McSween lived at in Lincoln.
If this guy says he has The Kids hair, why won't they use that for d.n.a
It would do no good because hair that is shed or cut Does not contain DNA
He was a very young outlaw he was only 18 or19 years old
My grandpa is a cowboy all his whole life and he would share some history and the ways of the old days
He was a punk.
Reversed picture is wrong. Things don’t just show up out of nowhere, and cameras don’t take pictures of things that aren’t there.
Brushy bill Roberts claimed he lost his hat and a revolver as he escaped across the creek north of McSweens burning house during that famous gunfight.......someone should contact netflix, Stan or paramount and do a recorded doco to try to find that revolver.....it would still be in that creek if Roberts is Billy the kid.
Don't believe brushy bill, never did!
25:48 What does he mean there’s a loading iron and if you got caught with that you would hang? I can’t see it in the video and I googled it nothing popped up
A branding iron with a plain tip can be used to change a brand on cattle and horses. The hot iron can be used to "draw" a new brand by altering the old one. The common name for such an iron is a "running" iron because it is run over the hide rather than stamping. A common tool used by rustlers who would likely be hung for stealing livestock back then. Many times without a trial. The running iron shone in the video has a curved tip for easier drawing and holds heat longer than a pointed tip.
@@DustyReinsStories Oh a branding iron. That does make sense.
I heard it closed down and sold / auctioned. Is that true?

Ok what happen about showing you Billy the Kid's hair? He totally forgot.
Billy the kid is my dad's brother's wife's uncles nephew
?
?
no, your daddy was a chimpanzee
LOL
Can you say that,10 times fast! No offense meant.
He was still holding knife and gun after
Being shot?
U claim to have billy the kids hair… and u havent tracked down everyone alive related to him who could possibly know some history of say their grandparents who may or may not have been direct descendants or possibly a death cheating billy in his last few years.
....says has his hair ?
REST IN PEACE BILLIE ....Billies' dad's is in safe keep as tradition has it
He's got a lot of wrong information. The funeral was closed, and they showed his body out in the open.
Billy escaped the scene and lived a long live.
Anyone with a lick of sense knows that is a crock. Why some folks hero worship a sociopath, homicidal maniac, criminal that murdered at least three law enforcement officers by ambush. Had he somehow managed to live, how long could he have stayed on the straight and narrow? These claims of him being "Brushy Bill" Roberts are beyond ridiculous.
Cool museum but hard to get into since you don't really know if the items are the real deal. Kind of hard to verify.
Reversing that original is non scientific. Camera don’t take pictures of things not there, and if you reverse the photo the loading gat shows up out of nowhere. The Loading gate is not on left side. Cameras don’t just make stuff up.
