Makes so upset to see this. Only 40 years ago. Americans were still great and had pride for ourselves and our country. How did we lose it so fast..

I served in 1984 for eight years in the US Army thank you for posting this it brings back memories I was a high school dropout no one would give me an opportunity except the United States Army I was a high school dropout the recruiter drove me every single day to and from an adult high school when I got my diploma he said do I want to join still I told him no one else would give me an opportunity give me 8 years in the service went to college after I got out I got into the medical field I want to thank the US Army for the opportunity and the values it gave me to succeed in life when no one else wanted to give me that opportunity thank you for posting this. I salute all my brothers and sisters who are currently serving some In Harm's Way and I thank them for their faithful service. Before the army the word can't was stuck in my head after basic training the word cannot was no longer stuck in my head the Army taught me you that you can succeed in anything you do if you try very hard

I graduated HS in 1983 and joined the Army a few months after graduating. The Army paid me a LOT better than a full time job I had before joining and I got 3 promotions within a year since the Army promoted based on your performance and not a test or a popularity contest. I chose the Infantry but as a Tank Destroyer (MOS 11H) and I went to a lot of “career enhancement” schools which gave me some interesting skill sets. The perception of low IQ people being in the Infantry is far from reality, it got that perception thanks to McNamara’s Morons during Vietnam where they lowered the minimum IQ from 83 down to 70 but over the years since, the average IQ of an Infantryman is 120 since we hate doing the same boring job every day, we prefer fluid environments where we face challenges. The Army gave me a lot of benefits I enjoy now since I retired from Active Duty in 2009, no other civilian career will give you financial and medical benefits if you get injured and I’m well compensated.

Be All You Can Be is more than a recruiting slogan. It is what every person should strive for, being the very best they can. In todays society, our youth need the motivation to stay out of gangs, stay off the streets, and focus on the much bigger picture. That much bigger picture is Being All They Can Be in doing their part to Building A Better America. I don’t recall when Be all you can be first became our slogan, but I do remember hearing it doing my 20 years of active duty from 72 -92..

I hate to say it when I went in in 83 it was still seen by a lot of people as being a place for ignorant losers.....I kept my joining under wraps when I was in high school.....I had one guy who was a jock who had some how found out I was going in say to me "Why the fuck are you joining the Army?".....I went to a good high school where almost 100 percent went on to university....I am so glad I went in....

I joined in 1981 for a lot of reasons. I thought I owed it to my country.

If I had addressed my First Sgt. like that, he would have ripped my head off and called me every name in the book. I can hear him now. "Oh, what are we fucking friends now? Listen up, fuck stick. Don't EVER fucking talk to me again! I'm not your pal!"

I think this slogan is really designed to attract ambitious goal oriented people which what the military should try to recruit.
